RunQ8…

Bigger and Better Than Ever in its 6th Year

M

ark your calendars, get your running shoes ready and join us on November 12 at Marina Crescent to support a truly great cause. RunQ8 is back for its sixth year, to continue fulfilling its mission to support children with disabilities. Organized by Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute (FSRI), RunQ8 has become one of Kuwait’s most prominent charity sporting events, attracting more than1800 participants last year. The annual race aims to raise awareness and funds to support FSRI’s Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC), a non-profit pediatrics facility, providing specialized and multi-disciplinary treatment and care for children with disabilities – including rehab for physical injuries, developmental disorders, speech, language and swallowing difficulties, behavioral difficulties, learning disabilities, and much more. Proceeds from RunQ8 go towards enabling CERC to continue providing specialized quality care for children who otherwise may not get access to the care they need. The majority of raised funds are used to help families suffering from financial difficulties, providing them with treatment at a subsidized lower cost, or even for free in some cases. This year, RunQ8 is offering two chipped race distances – 5km or 10km – and is open to people of all ages and fitness levels. For those unable to run a marathon, no problem! You can walk, jog or just stroll. Registration is now open and participants can sign up via the official website (runq8.org). You can also call FSRI (25720338 or 25721757) for more information - and don’t forget to follow @runq8official and @ fsri on Instagram to get the latest news and updates. 12

LOUD AND PROUD

Gill Sherry

D

espite the fact that the Summer Olympic flame has long since been extinguished, the fever from Rio 2016 continues to burn. Young athletes the world over, bitten by the Olympic bug, have been cycling, running, rowing and swimming with renewed and admirable enthusiasm. Athletic clubs have been inundated with new members; there are lengthy waiting lists to join gymnastic clubs; and long deserted diving boards have suddenly sprung back to life. Exactly how many of these ‘wannabe’ Olympians will actually stand the test of time remains to be seen but the potential is enormous. Not everyone is cut out to be an Olympian - the rigorous training, personal sacrifice and financial cost will prove too much for most - but there’s a determined minority who will stop at nothing to be the best. So what is it about the Olympics? Inspired by the ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia, Greece, the modern Olympics are now considered the leading international sporting events in the world with participating athletes favouring the famous five rings over other prestigious competitions. The emotions witnessed as medals are awarded, flags are raised and anthems are played, are rarely seen elsewhere in the sporting calendar but are a common sight on the Olympic podium; quite a surprise when you consider there is no financial prize. Without the motivation of a hefty prize winning cheque, what inspires these athletes to win? Quite simply, they want to be the best. But the Olympics aren’t just about individuals. Many of the sports are team sports and each participating country is considered a team in itself. Many gold medal winners, when asked about their Olympic experience, cited ‘representing my country’ as their proudest moment. British tennis ace Andy Murray, the Team GB flag bearer at this year’s Games said, ‘To represent your country at the Games is an unbelievable experience....an incredible honour, the biggest in sport. The privilege of being the flag bearer is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life and will certainly be one of the highlights of my career’. Quite a statement from the 2012 US Open Champion, 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon Champion and double Olympic Champion. Kuwaiti shooter Fehaid Al-Deehani won Gold in the men’s double trap in Rio, improving on his Bronze medal wins at the Sydney 2000 and London 2012 Summer Games. Despite his win being recorded as ‘independent’ as a result of Kuwait’s Olympic body being suspended, Fehaid said, ‘That was for my country’. A perfect example of the pride and passion involved. Golf was reinstated as an Olympic sport in Rio after a 112 year absence and was won by Britain’s Justin Rose. ‘It’s a dream come true’ he said. ‘I’ve been thinking about Rio for a long, long time’. Rose barely had time to polish his Gold medal before he was teeing off in the Ryder Cup in Minnesota. This biennial competition between Europe and the United States is another example of sporting passion at its best. Gone was the 014

OCTOBER 2016

tranquility and etiquette usually associated with this affluent sport; replaced instead by a raucous crowd and animated, fiery players. With so much passion and emotion involved, you’d be forgiven for thinking the prize money at stake was off the scale. However, the biggest prize for winning the Ryder Cup is bragging rights over the losing opposition - a priceless prize when it comes to patriotic pride. The 41st Ryder Cup was won by the United States; their first win since 2008. One can’t help but wonder whether the loss of Arnold Palmer, one of the greatest Americans ever to hit a golf ball, spurred them on to their impressive win. Whatever the reason, the US can look back at their victory with honour and pride. They can also be assured that another generation of golfing legends will follow in their footsteps as countless young hopefuls flock to the fairways on the back of their Ryder Cup success. The sport’s popularity is no doubt on the rise and is becoming a popular pastime in the Middle East, despite the uncomfortable temperatures. With floodlit courses seeing a rise in ‘nightclubbing’ the demand for tee times is increasing, resulting in new courses being designed and constructed across the region. One thing’s for sure, they’ll be no shortage of sand for the bunkers! When it comes to sporting success, facilities play just as big a part as ambition. There’s no point having the desire and dedication to train if the equipment required is not up to scratch. From Kuwait’s point of view the situation is promising. In fact, judging by the number of well-equipped gymnasiums, it’s hard to believe the country can’t boast an Olympic weight-lifting champion already. Similarly, badminton, cycling, swimming, beach volleyball, handball, table tennis and trampolining all have the potential to produce first class athletes here in Kuwait. The possibilities for success are endless. Fehaid AlDeehani has fired the starting pistol but who will be lining up for the next Olympic race?

Keeping a Grasp on Reality How the virtual world affects young minds and what you can do about it.

Lisa M. Elliott

Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist and Clinic Manager at Cook Children's Medical Center

A

n influx of virtual reality games, such as Pokémon Go, have been linked to various sociological phenomenon and mental conditions, including lack of social interaction and hyper-addictive behaviour, to name just two. Studies conducted to attest the fact have proven that a child’s neurological set-up goes through numerous changes when faced with prolonged exposure to the virtual world. Lisa M. Elliott, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist and Clinic Manager at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth Texas says; “The neurological set-up of a young child is extremely delicate. Our brains do not completely develop until we are 25 years of age. Until then, we are exposed to various changes occurring especially during the teen years. These changes allow our brains to function more efficiently. This process is known as neural pruning”. Virtual gaming, in moderation, has its benefits. A number of important studies have linked virtual games with the improvement in multi-tasking capabilities and the enhancement of visual acuity. The concern starts when the gaming activity transforms itself to an addiction rather than enhancement exercise. “Video gaming can promote addictive qualities due to the release of neurotransmitters or chemicals such as dopamine, a neurotransmitter that affects the pleasure centre of the brain” explains Dr. Elliott. “Video gaming results in a flooding of dopamine resulting in instant pleasure thus forcing gamers to keep on playing. Besides wreaking havoc on the neurotransmission set-up, executive functioning skills associated with the frontal cortex are also affected due to the constant release of dopamine”. And that’s just the physiological aspect. Addictive gamers are known to exhibit significant behavioural problems including withdrawal symptoms and 018

OCTOBER 2016

even aggression when the games have been taken away. “We at Cook Children’s Hospital have come across many cases when students place games over reality” says Dr. Elliott. “In one such case, one college student fell out of college because they could not terminate their gaming addiction on their own, while another high school student was required to attend a wilderness program because he became violent when his parents took away his games and gaming equipment. We are also aware that 80% of video games include violent content which results in increased aggressive thoughts and actions, and a reduction in empathy, kindness and generosity”. Dr. Elliott continues; “Parents play an important role in limiting their child’s exposure. We have always recommended for parents to participate with their children when discovering the three-dimensional world rather than isolating them. It is always better to play with your child and remind them of the difference between the virtual and real world and inform them that extensive preoccupation with video games can be harmful”. Parents need to keep themselves educated on all the research regarding gaming and have healthy discussions about their impact that is both age and developmentally appropriate. Discussions should not be just lectures but the sharing of information and solicitation of the child’s own ideas on how to keep their brain, body, academic, social and family relationships healthy. Engaging your child in other activities while limiting their access to gaming equipment to one to two hours a day is recommended. Learn how to check your child’s devices and history and utilize firewalls and blocking programs. Additionally, invest some time in researching the quality of video games. You will also be able to find good quality pro-social.

UNLEASH YOUR INNER EXPLORER AT ALILA JABAL AKHDAR WITH THEIR SIX NEW HIKING TRAILS

A

lila Jabal Akhdar has introduced six exhilarating new routes that take hikers on an adventure through Oman’s magnificent mountain landscape. Ideal for guests at all levels of fitness who feel like exploring the surrounding area on their own or with the expertise of a guide, these guided and non-guided walks follow well-marked trails that traverse the astounding scenery, descending into the wadi and winding though canyons, caves, abandoned villages, farms and plantations. Alila also opened its new Via Ferrata traversing the canyon side. Alila’s team of Omani guides, all of whom have been internationally accredited to provide a safe and secure experience, will challenge experts and entice beginners. Offering an experience tailored to suit everyone, the trails include different levels of difficulty such as the gentle three-hour hikes that most will find manageable, as well as longer, more challenging routes that will satisfy and even challenge those with previous mountain hiking experience. Mirage in the Mountains is a beautiful walk that takes you to the abandoned village of Sirab. Once home to the original members of the community, Sirab has provided much inspiration for Alila Jabal Akhdar’s design. Keep a lookout for herds of goats and sheep that roam wild whilst you make your way to Ali’s cave, which is a 60m deep pothole featuring breathtaking formations, and also Wadi Tallah, a fresh wadi that gives guests a chance to enjoy a cool swim in its pools. The Discovery Trail starts from the nearby village of Hayl Al Hadab. From there it heads deeper into the mountain backdrop taking you on a fairly gentle 8km hike, passing by two abandoned villages as well as a small but very picturesque dam, and Ali’s cave. 020

OCTOBER 2016

The Adventure Trek is a 4-hour guided trek down an easy via ferrata (iron road) that is sure to get one’s adrenaline pumping right from the start with a steep descent and the aid of climbing equipment. The path then leads steadily down into the wadi, passing some of the most stunning mountain scenery to the hidden village of Al Khutaymi located in a cave on the wadi floor. Walk a little further and discover the best swimming pool in the Green Mountain. For those who really want to seize the whole day and go exploring, the following 5 to 7-hour routes are nothing short of spectacular. Follow the Aqbat Steps Trail down a steep slope, passing through the rocky canyons to Masirat Al Jawamid, a remarkable abandoned village in Oman located at the bottom of the wadi. The trail continues to the top of some Bedouin steps that lead down to the gardens below, ending at the top of a jawdropping waterfall. Many of these sights can also be experienced on The Donkey Trail, which starts at Aqbat Al Biyut, about a 40-minute drive from the resort. As its name suggests, it follows a well-marked donkey trail, covering 8.6km with even more stunning views across the valley. Last but by no means least, the 7.5km Lost Village Hike starts at the small village of Mahaibis five minutes from the resort. Passing through the abandoned cave village of Al Khutaymi, the trail then drops dramatically by 600m to the beautiful plantations of Masirat Ash Shuraqiyn that lie below. Here, deep in the wadi, you can swim and refresh yourself in preparation for the uphill hike back. Unforgettable adventures in the Green Mountain begin at Alila Jabal Akhdar. Simply pack a day bag, choose a trail, and see where it takes you… And don’t forget your camera to capture some of the most amazing scenes Oman has to offer.

Fatima Batook If you’re looking for inspiration to lose weight, look no further than Fatima Batook. From overweight childhood misfit, to healthy, successful sportswear creator, Fatima turned her life around for the better. Read on to learn more about her journey, what motivated her to get fit and her best tips for staying healthy.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I was born in Singapore and moved to Saudi when I was 5. I come from a multicultural background; my father is Saudi and my mother is from Tibet, so being different was always part of my identity. Growing up being different from my fellow peers in school and society was somewhat difficult for me because back then people weren’t used to a culture or a country other than their own, so it took me a few years to fit in; and it took even longer for me to accept my individuality.

Tell us about your education.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and a Master’s in Business Administration and Analysis. Growing up I have always been around business; my family has a chewing gum business in Saudi and I grew up with an avid interest in opening my own one day.

How and when did your interest in fitness and sports develop?

My interest in fitness started with a personal goal to achieve and turned into my mission in life. I am super passionate about fitness, it’s the reason I wake up in the morning. I feel like it’s my duty to share this passion with everyone I meet or interact with. When I was 18 I faced health and weight issues. I was morbidly obese for my height and age and doctors told me I was prone to diabetes and heart problems. Their advice was to go to the gym. I saw a great big poster on the gym wall saying Spinning burned 800 calories per hour and I thought this was my solution! I went into this intimidating room of bikes, sat on a bike for 10 minutes, then decided to never ever come back! The next day I pushed myself and attended 15 more minutes, until one day I finished a whole class. That was my turning point; that’s when everything made sense to me. Health and weight management was hard work that depended on progressive and consistent efforts like Spinning.

How and when did the idea of TIMA develop?

The idea came from a dream my friend had. We were once joking around about the idea of me putting together my own workout DVD, and the next day she called me saying she dreamt I had my own sportswear line called TIMA. When I first started the brand in 2012, it was more of a mission to encourage fitness among Saudi women. I thought it would be a cool idea to have a Saudi sport brand made by a Saudi female. I wanted people to be intrigued and to hear my story and be inspired.

How did you come up with the name TIMA for your brand? What does it mean?

TIMA is a nickname my mom and close friends always call me. TIMA is a reflection of your true power. True power is not to focus on what we will get in return but focus our energy on what we can give. Keep this energy pure and genuine and the universe will return that energy in a way we can't imagine.

What difficulties did you face in starting your own business and how did you overcome them?

The idea seemed simple in theory, but not everyone accepted a Saudi brand for active wear. Initially, they only wanted international brands, but today I can proudly say we have broken the stereotype; we even won the best sport brand of the year from Sport 360 in March 2015.

Tell us about your design process.

Although I am not a designer, I share my ideas and inspirations with my team in LA and they put

together sketches and then create samples to personally try out. When we first started working with the designers, I was very clear on what we wanted from a practical point of view. When the samples were sent to Saudi I asked the women I train, who are of different shapes and sizes, to try them on and provide feedback until we got it right.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

The women around me are my source of inspiration for the collections. I’ve even named some of the designs after the people in my life. For example, my friend Rasha is a revolutionary person so I named a pair of leggings after her – the Rasha Revolution. The women that come to the studio where I teach constantly give me ideas; one girl suggested using florescent colours, which led me to launch a line called Glow. The fabric glows in the dark when we’re in the cycling studio. I also take inspiration from nature, as well as reach out to our brand ambassadors for feedback.

Where do you source and manufacture your products?

All of our products and materials are manufactured in Brazil.

How do you see the current sports and fitness industry in the Middle East region?

In general, Arab women are not really into fitness and do not make it part of their lives, but I can say now that this is changing! The awareness of being healthy and fit has grown in the past years and women nowadays are into working out and have a better understanding of training and different trends. Women have different interests; some women are interested in yoga and Pilates and others are into intense workouts such as boot camp.

How can sports and fitness empower women across the region?

Fitness has many forms and can empower and change lives. Exercise builds confidence and makes women dedicated and committed; it makes them love themselves and overcome their challenges. Exercise brings women together and unites them. Women around the world have the same needs, dreams, ambitions and aspirations. One thing we’re blessed with in this part of the world is that even with our busy lives we have strong bonds; we stand up for each other, support each other and connect with each other on many different levels. I get to see that on a daily basis from the women I encounter each day in my life.

What are your expansion plans?

We have a variety of new styles of leggings and tops coming out in our new collection. We will be introducing tops that can be used for both workouts and casual wear. We’re testing out the market and what kind of new styles are becoming popular. We are also expanding in new locations. It’s getting exciting!

What are some of your best tips to staying healthy?

lEat

plenty of healthy foods. Avoid junk food like chips, cakes, pizzas and ice cream. Your body will thank you. Eat foods high in protein and fiber and remember to opt for smaller portions. Shoot for 3-4 small meals per day. lDrink water instead of juice or soda, even if it's diet. Although diet soda offers a ‘zero’ calorie alternative to regular soda, it still interferes with weight loss. If you're serious about getting your body in tip-top shape, don't drink anything but water. Substituting water for every other drink will drastically lower your caloric intake. lGet more sleep. Sleep is the third part of the puzzle for many looking to lose weight. Many women and men are obsessed with going to the gym, eat like vegetarian monks, yet still don't see a reduction in their waist size. Getting a good night's sleep is an important part of shedding those extra pounds. lDo your cardio. Cardio is a great way to burn calories and get your body in shape. The goal is to get your heart rate going at a healthy pace so that it burns extra energy. lMake a workout routine. Working your body, with weights or without, helps target extra flab where you don't want it: your lower arms, your thighs, your rump, your belly. A workout routine is an important part of getting that body ready for its debut! lMake stretching a part of your routine. Yoga is a great way to relax, reduce muscles stress and feel centered. Trigger point is also a great way to release all that muscle tension. 024

What is your advice for achieving the best work/life balance?

It makes me laugh a little when people ask me this question because my life is not about balancing work and life. My ‘life’ and work are both connected to each other; I work on things that I am passionate about and I do the things I love with passion. When you have your work and your life together as one, I believe this is when you find the work-life balance.

Where can ladies find and buy TIMA?

Our items are available in select studios and stores across Saudi; Studio55 Khobar, Kore, Nuyu, GlowFIT, U-mark in Riyadh, Namaste Bahrain and soon in MILK store in Bahrain, Utopia Boutique in Kuwait and in many studios in Dubai. It is also available on our new, recently launched website: www. timalovelife.com

Improve your gut health to improve your immune system. The weather is changing and that means that cold and flu season has arrived. Have you ever noticed that some people seldom get sick? Or maybe you have wondered why after being exposed to the same virus, one person gets ill while the other remains well.

Jamie & Alana Karehana The reason lies in the strength of the immune Microbes: the good, the bad, and the ugly system. Inside your digestive system are many microbes. Microbes The strength of your immune system is largely dependent upon the condition of your digestive system. When you are exposed to bad bacteria or viruses, it is up to your immune system to protect you from being infected. If your immune system is strong, your body will fight off the threat. If your immune system is weak or compromised, you may end up sick. 026

are live organisms that affect your overall health. Some of these organisms are beneficial and protect you from disease. These good bacteria recognize when illnessproducing intruders enter your body; they promptly attack the intruders so you do not get sick. If you do not have enough good bacteria in your gut you will be more susceptible, not only to infections such as colds and

causing bacteria begin to take up residence. When the scale tips in favour of the bad, your immune system becomes compromised. Enter Probiotics or Our Lemon Ginger Detox If you think you might be deficient in good microbes, it is not difficult to remedy the problem. The solution is to take probiotics. Probiotics are good microbes that you can consume in your diet. They then settle in your digestive system and get to work protecting you from illness and destroying the bad bacteria that may be living there. Probiotics are available in capsule form, but you can also replenish the good microbes by eating yogurt. Check the label on the yogurt you buy to make sure it says that it contains active cultures - those are the good bacteria that you need to eat. A key factor when choosing a probiotic is to ensure the supplement you buy actually contains live microflora bacteria. Many products are only guaranteed at the time of manufacture, which means that the majority may have died off by the time you get around to taking them. Instead, only buy probiotics that are guaranteed through the date of expiration. It’s important to get products containing the species and strain that have been tested in research and shown to have worthwhile outcomes. Here are examples of what to look for: • Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM • Bifidobacteriumlactis BI-07 or HN019 • Bacillus Indicus HU36 • Bacillus Subtilis HU58 • Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 • Saccharomyces boulardii Not a fan or believer of probiotics? stomach flu, but you will also be at risk from autoimmune diseases such as colitis, rheumatoid arthritis and Chron’s disease. Ideally you have a large supply of these good microbes living in your gut, but they can easily become depleted. If you have recently taken antibiotics, you have had not only the bad bacteria wiped out, but also the good bacteria. Antibiotics are not selective in their destruction. Antibiotics are not the only way that good bacteria can become depleted in your digestive system. The chlorine in your drinking water can destroy them, as can the pesticide residue on the food that you eat. Once the supply of beneficial microbes in your intestines dwindles, bad microbes such as yeast, fungi and disease-

Directions: Add the lemon juice to the glass of water. If using ginger: finely grate the ginger using a zester and add the zest to the glass of water. If using cayenne pepper: add a pinch of cayenne to your water. The perfect way to start your day! Every morning, start your day with a lemon ginger detox drink. The reasons for this are: 1) It helps relieve gastrointestinal irritation - so helps with an upset stomach, being bloated or gassy. 2) It helps stimulate saliva and bile production. 3) It can reduce stress. If you are unsure how or what probiotic to choose, send us an email at admin@karehanafitness.com. Take action now and get a head start on this year’s cold and flu season. You can get ahead of the game by improving your gut function and fighting illness. www.cpmagazine.net

Lynn Whyte There’s more to Lynn Whyte than meets the eye. Qualified in Marketing & Management as well as in Fashion, she now spends her time helping those in need by raising money for various different charities. Lynn is the originator of Second Chance, Kuwait’s first charity shop. Established in 2014, it benefits not only those in need across the globe by donating money, medicine and clothing; but also the underprivileged in Kuwait by selling quality clothes at a price they can afford. As a Scottish Muslim and mother of three, she always has a story to tell but it’s her love of charity work that really makes her tick. Lynn talked to us about how Second Chance came about and what she has planned for the future.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I’m Lynn Whyte, originally from Scotland, UK. I’m the founder of Second Chance charity shop in Kuwait, the mother of three children and grandmother to two and a half year old Kaiyan.

Tell us about your education.

I have a Fashion degree from the London College of Fashion and also a Marketing and Management degree from my time in Glasgow.

How long have you lived in Kuwait and what brought you here?

I’ve lived here for eight years. My youngest daughter is Kuwaiti and I wanted her to know her heritage and be educated in Kuwait. When she reached high school age, we moved from the UK to Kuwait. Also, I’ve been Muslim for a long time and I wanted to study and learn more about my religion.

Tell us about your career since arriving in Kuwait.

I arrived on a Thursday and started work on the Sunday! Previously, I’d always worked in either catering or fashion but when I arrived I was employed as a teacher in a nursery. I loved it but I’d only ever taught adults, not children, and all I wanted to do was play with them! I was there for a year before joining the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. I also taught a fashion course at Kuwait’s British Academy of International Arts, BAIA. We established the only professional 030

OCTOBER 2016

UK certified course in fashion in Kuwait. I taught people of all ages and all nationalities but sadly I had to give it up for medical reasons. Before that a colleague and I had started our own business. It focused on fair trade and ethical clothing but it didn’t catch on. The concept didn’t work here in Kuwait and although we were mainly targeting ex-pats, we needed more time and money.

When and how was Second Chance established?

I first started to think about it seriously three years ago. I wanted to do something for charity but wasn’t sure what to do or how to do it. It was when I was on holiday and the Syria situation was starting to bubble up; that’s what spurred me on to finally do it. I needed somewhere with low rent and an established footfall so I approached Dr. Teresa Lesher, the voluntary manager at TIES Center in Shuhada, a social and educational hub for expats in Kuwait. With her help and her team, my idea for a charity shop was given the green light.

How did you come up with the name?

I’d been trying to come up with a suitable name for ages and was talking to my husband about it. I said “I just want to give people and items a second chance”. “That’s it” he said, “There’s your name”. We designed the logo to look like a recycled package; a gift wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string to resemble a gift, a gift of hope.

When did Second Chance first open?

We opened within three months so only had a short time to get organised. It was officially opened by Mrs. Alexia Lodge, wife of British Ambassador to Kuwait, Mr. Matthew Lodge, on 11th April 2014. I wanted an attractive, boutique style shop with coordinated coat hangers and nice white shelves but so many things had been donated prior to the opening it was chaos! I had to store things at my house. At first we were steaming all of the clothes before selling them but we soon realised that would be an impossible task.

medical treatment for women through Al Sidra Centre. We've also assisted with school orphans, childrens’ medical costs, clothing and items for new babies and so much more. Some stories are heartbreaking. We learned of children in hospital in the Philippines and Morocco who were unable to pay hospital bills. The children died but if they’d had the money for treatment, they would have lived. We really love to help local personal causes and have daily requests for help. It’s hard to choose and sadly sometimes we have to turn down cries of help. We wish we could do more.

How much money do you raise at the shop? How does the charity shop work? How do charities With my fashion background, I’m able to tell what’s good benefit from it?

Second Chance is not a registered charity. We’re a community based registered voluntary service. The money we raise in the shop is donated to various different registered charities. Basically, the public donate goods and we sell them, or send them to places in need, either overseas or here in Kuwait. People also make monetary donations. We have an open book policy and are accountable to the public. We take photographs and keep receipts. But it’s more than just charity. Second Chance has brought so many people together. From my point of view, it’s physically exhausting but I’ve earned people’s trust and developed lasting relationships.

How do you decide which charities to donate to?

When we first opened, people were still suffering the effects of the Nepal earthquake so we decided that the takings from our opening day (700KD) should benefit those people. Sometimes we are approached by other people and asked to raise money for their preferred charity. We recently held a bazaar just for PAWS. Prior to that donations went towards funding wells in Bangladesh and to Cancer Research. We’ve also worked with KACCH (Kuwait Association for the Care of Children) by donating toys and have funded life-enhancing 032

quality and what’s not and can charge accordingly. On average, we raise between 100 and 400 dinars per month - not bad with opening hours of only 8 hours a week. Sometimes, if we have excess stock, we hold a sale on a Saturday morning and sell everything at 100fils. We can make up to 150KD in two hours this way.

Tell us about your involvement with the Filipino Shelter.

We received news of young girls rescued from human traffickers and of maids who had escaped from abusive employers. 2000 women were admitted in one day with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. There is a shelter were the ladies stay and we try to help out in various ways. Babies were left on the doorstep and many of the women had suffered sexual or physical abuse. We appealed for toiletries, sanitary items, new underwear and baby clothes and were happy to witness and aid the return of 12 women to their homes. Following our appeal, 40 women volunteered their help within 2 days and we were able to provide lessons in arts and crafts, beauty, social skills and baking. We even organised Zumba classes! In our aim to teach life skills, we hope to give these women a chance to either home school or establish a cottage industry in their own country to avoid the horrendous ordeal for others.

Do you struggle to find volunteers to help you?

Not really, although people don’t realise how physically demanding it can be! It’s difficult to retain good volunteers. Patricia Whelan, Director at BAIA, has been helpful in sourcing volunteers. Volunteering is a key requirement of the International Award at The British School of Kuwait, so students were happy to give their time as part of the youth achievement award. They are given a certificate of merit from Second Chance. Ellen, our first volunteer, has branched out with her daughter, Aisha. Together they are doing their own charity work raising money for cats of Kuwait. A fabulous thing to do aged 77!

What are your future plans for Second Chance?

We quickly outgrew our space at TIES and our time with them came to an end earlier this year. They were so generous in giving us one year rent free and we couldn’t have become the success we are today without their help. The whole team at TIES was brilliant and very supportive but we are now looking for alternative premises. So far we’ve been unable to find a suitable location as the rent in most places is simply too expensive. My wish for the future would be to have really nice premises in a good location. I’d like to establish a really nice shop with vintage store appeal! With suitable premises we’d be able to employ a full time shop assistant and raise even more money. If anyone can help, please get in touch! I’d also love to arrange fashion shows using second hand clothes. My background is fashion and marketing and I want to promote recycling and up-cycling of clothes. We will be doing ‘Pop-up’ Bazaars. Anyone wishing to arrange one at their home, school or place of work can contact me on 60033022. In the meantime, I’ve started sewing and arts & crafts classes for teens and adults at TIES. All levels are welcome from beginners to professionals! You can visit TIES website or Facebook for times and details.

Do you ever get chance to relax? I don’t relax! I’m always thinking and planning new events or dealing with requests for charitable help. However, I do like to knit and sew. I’m a professional dressmaker and I recently learned to crochet which I am finding very relaxing. I also like reading. These are the times when my mind switches off.

Are you still accepting donations even though you don’t currently have premises? Yes. We still need toiletries, books, household goods and good quality clothes and shoes. The key is not to donate something that you wouldn’t buy yourself. Although the shop is currently closed, we still hold regular charity bazaars at TIES and we still send clothing to Syria and Yemen. It’s great when we can send photographs to the people who donate so they can see their items, money or time being recycled, used or re-used. We really aim to keep it a community based project were everyone has a sense of pride and accomplishment. We are currently collecting baby milk for Yemen. We have a reliable source to deliver. Even school kids are using their pocket money to buy milk – it’s been a great response.

What should people do if they want to donate? They can e-mail me at Lynn0206@hotmail.co.uk or send a WhatsApp message to 60033022. I’m always open to ideas! We can also help individuals set up bazaars and fundraising events for charities of their choice. Please follow us on Instagram too @secondchanceq8

When is your next event? We are joining BSK for their ‘Pink Saturday’ in aid of Cancer Care on October 15th from 11am to 3pm. All proceeds will go to Al Sidra. For more information please WhatsApp me! www.cpmagazine.net

Muscle Madness

H

aving only just recovered from last month’s inappropriate display of barely-there swimwear, I was faced with another shocking sight during my weekend visit to the beach. This time the guilty party was male, wearing the tightest pair of ‘budgie smugglers’ you’re ever likely to see. But it wasn’t just the swimwear that raised onlookers’ eyebrows. The body on which the skimpy Speedo style swimwear was apparently sprayed, was the most grotesque example of body-building ever to emerge from a gym. Body building is a popular pastime in Kuwait. Men spend an inordinate amount of time (and money) trying to achieve what they consider to be the perfect body. As well as the endless hours spent lifting weights, they also top-up their hard work with a variety of fat burning, muscle enhancing and energy increasing supplements. Combined with a high protein diet, there’s no question it takes hard work and dedication to achieve their desired results. But there’s a fine line between discipline and obsession. Men have been known to take their body building to the extreme, at the expense of almost everything else. They have no social life, other than time spent with their fellow enthusiasts in the gym; their job (if they have one) comes second to their weight lifting obsession; and their family rarely gets to see them due to their preference of a hard bench over a comfortable sofa. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a great believer in keeping fit, but this is a different thing entirely. The budgie-smuggling example of this apparent obsession had obviously made many sacrifices to achieve his chosen body shape. There’s no denying 034

OCTOBER 2016

the fact he had worked incredibly hard to boast the solid pecs, rippling abs and bulging biceps of which he was clearly very proud, but there was something about his uncomfortable stance that suggested he may have taken his compulsion a little too far. Whilst he may have looked a picture of ‘Popeye’ perfection lying horizontal on his sunbed, his unnatural body shape made it difficult for him, not only to manoeuvre, but also to walk. As a result, he spent most of his time standing upright, rubbing himself with oil and lapping up the attention of wide-eyed onlookers. I suspect most were disturbed by his alien body shape rather than impressed by it. As for me, I was just perturbed by the fact that his mile-wide shoulders obscured the sun. In addition to his cumbersome muscle mass, his skin was also cause for concern. It’s a proven fact that the increased testosterone levels associated with body building can cause acne. In addition, steroid use can also result in problematic skin all over the body. Any pleasure this beach-going giant may have gained by parading his oil slick body along the seashore must surely have been diluted by the poor condition of his skin. Not a problem if it’s covered with clothes, but I suspect this particular gargantuan, with shoulders more suited to an American football pitch than a Kuwaiti beach, would struggle to find a shirt to fit. So why do they do it? If it’s to appear more attractive to the female race I’d hazard a guess that they’re wasting their time. Ask any woman to describe her ideal man and I doubt many would answer ‘a vain body building giant with all-over acne’. Admittedly such giants are in the minority but it’s surely a lesson, if ever there was one, that general all-round fitness is better than vanity driven obsession.

Sheila Lilley Wife, mother, cancer survivor.

As you would expect, Sheila Lilley was devastated when she was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. However, she soon learned that with a positive attitude and the support of family and friends, it was possible to overcome the obstacles and lead a happy, healthy life.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Sheila Lilley. I am British (from Scotland) but have lived in Kuwait for over 10 years. I am married and have two children aged 15 and 11.

When and how did you first find out you have breast cancer?

Two years ago - in April 2014 - when I found a lump under my arm in the shower. I went straight to the Doctor who sent me for an ultrasound and mammogram and it was discovered there was also a lump in my breast. Both lumps were tested and both found to be cancer.

What were your main concerns after being diagnosed?

My main concern was making sure I survived as I was not ready to say goodbye to my beautiful children who were only 9 and 13 at the time. I was also concerned, as a woman who likes to take care of herself, about losing my breast and losing my hair - two things which help to define me as a woman.

How did your family react to the news?

My husband was devastated but became so strong and helped me through everything. I could not have done it without him, he was my rock! My children were very upset but I tried hard to be positive, cheerful and keep home life as easy and normal as I could, so they could cope. Although I am sad I have no parents still alive, I was glad they didn’t have to see me with cancer. My brothers and sister-in-law back in the UK were amazingly helpful as well and did many things for me, including looking after me when I took some of my treatment in the UK.

How did you cope emotionally?

Everyone said I was so strong and coped very well emotionally. I'm not sure I always felt that strong inside when I was at my weakest with the chemotherapy treatment. But my view was, as long as my children and husband were healthy, I would and could cope emotionally and physically.

How did you manage the costs of treatment?

Luckily, the costs of the treatment were not an issue for me. I had health insurance through my husband's employer and I was covered for cancer. However cancer treatment is not available in private hospitals. Most of my treatment was 038

OCTOBER 2016

through the Kuwait Government Hospitals so the charge was not very much, or through the British National Health system which was free. I feel such sympathy for people who are faced with financial difficulty while suffering from cancer. It is hard enough to cope with ill health without the added burden of not being able to pay for it. I would add that the treatment I had in both countries was amazing.

Did you face any obstacles during your treatment process? If so, how did you overcome these obstacles? I did face a number of obstacles during my treatment such as conflicting advice about the best course of treatment and which operation I should have; whether to have my operation in Kuwait or to leave my children so I could have treatment in the UK where other family members could look after me; how to ensure my children were looked after while my husband was at work; how to get access to a scalp cooling machine to try to save some of my hair. I can honestly say I overcame these obstacles with lots of prayer and lots of determined family and friends helping me work through the processes.

How has breast cancer affected your outlook on life? Sometimes I feel more positive in my outlook. For example, I appreciate every small thing because I am alive and I might not have been if I had found the cancer much later. But at other times I feel very tired and fearful of the future because I worry that the cancer will come back. This makes me a bit stressed and negative so I have to force myself back to the positive outlook.

What advice would you like to give to women about breast cancer? Firstly, go for regular checks! I had been meaning to go for several years but had not done so. If I had, maybe the cancer would have been caught even sooner, possibly before it spread to my lymph nodes. Secondly, look after yourself during treatment. Ask your friends and family to help. I ate extremely healthily on an alkaline diet and it gave me the strength to cope with the chemotherapy, operation and radiotherapy. Thirdly, remember there is a good chance of recovery and a happy life afterwards.

Jane Chacko “After my last chemotherapy session I was ecstatic” After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, Jane Chacko feared the worst. But trauma was replaced with triumph as she made it through the treatment to a less stressful and more positive life. Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello, my name is Jane Chacko and I am a breast cancer survivor. Originally from Canada, I have lived around the world including the USA, Japan, Germany and Kuwait. In addition to travelling, I am also a semi-professional artist and am involved with animal rescue. Currently, I live with my husband and two rescued cats.

When and how did you first find out you have breast cancer?

I found out on June 5th 2012 after discovering a lump through self-examination, going directly to the doctor, and being sent for a biopsy. I actually had two weeks to prepare for the confirmation because during the biopsy, the doctor told me that it was most likely cancer.

What were your main concerns after being diagnosed?

It was a shock to me because I believed that cancer was something that would happen to others but never to me. Cancer does not run in my family so I never imagined that one day I would have it. I really knew nothing about cancer and my first concern was if I was going to die and if so, how soon. My next concern was breaking the news to my mom and what her reaction would be. It was a stressful time.

How did your family react to the news?

My mom was heartbroken at the news and my twin sister said, “Cancer? Wow, I can’t believe it!” My husband, although also in shock, stayed strong throughout and started researching cancer immediately. The more he read, the better he felt and he said to me, “You are only stage two and your chances of survival are good. I think you will be fine”.

How did you cope emotionally?

Knowing that my chances of survival were quite good made coping with having cancer much easier. It was difficult emotionally to lose my hair and to be bald for almost a year, which surprised me because at the beginning I did not think that losing my hair would be such a big deal. But when my hair started falling out, it was actually rather traumatic. Also, the steroids made my face puffy and when I looked in the mirror I did not see myself but rather a strange ‘alien’ looking back at me. I never got used to that. It was also difficult to go through 8 rounds of chemotherapy, which lasted for 6 months, as there were many side effects including nausea, intestinal problems, 040

OCTOBER 2016

weight gain, etc. However, at the end the feeling I had was one of triumph; after my last chemotherapy session I was ecstatic and thought “Wow, I have made it through”.

How did you manage the costs of treatment?

I was treated in Kuwait so the only costs I incurred were for the initial tests such as the MRI, bone scan, etc. After that it was just minor expenses.

Did you face any obstacles during your treatment process? If so, how did you overcome these obstacles? My treatment, and my case for that matter, was according to the book. I really didn’t face any unforeseen obstacles and my treatment was pretty smooth.

How has breast cancer affected your outlook on life?

Having cancer makes you think about death and dying, which I hadn’t really thought that much about before. I had assumed that I would live at least into my 80s and now I don’t make any assumptions but rather just value the time that I have. A doctor friend of mine once told me years ago that “once you have cancer you always have cancer”, so it is a matter of accepting that fact and dealing with it. It is easy to become paranoid that cancer will come back, but it is important not to do that. I just live life and appreciate what I have, knowing that one day I will die – and I am ok with that. I also noticed that I don’t stress so much about things; during chemotherapy I did not even get stressed with the driving here in Kuwait!

What advice would you like to give to women about breast cancer? It is very important to take the necessary precautions. I, for example, went for a base mammogram when I was 40 years old, but then I never went back. Had I gone for regular mammograms, I would not have been able to prevent cancer, but my cancer would have been detected earlier, which would have made my treatment easier. In fact, if my cancer had been diagnosed in time, I could have avoided going through chemotherapy. So go for a mammogram! Also, if a woman is diagnosed with cancer, it is not necessarily the end of the world. Cancer can be treated and many women are breast cancer survivors, back to leading normal lives. The important thing is to accept the situation, it is what it is; don’t think about what you should have done or what could have been, rather just stay positive and move on.

Spirituality in Overall Wellness and Meditation

Stephanie Ludwig

Ph.D., M.A., M.Div., Director of Spiritual Wellness

1. Life can seem to pass us by in a blur of frantic, meaningless activity. Through mindfulness practice we learn to pause, breathe and engage all of our senses in becoming aware of the present moment with curiosity and openness. We develop the freedom to choose what we will pay attention to. 2. Reconnect with the tranquillity and joy that comes from spending time in natural beauty, whether at one of our spectacular Canyon Ranch® properties or walking in a city park. 3. Breathe. Breathe in and out through your nose, drawing your breath down into your belly with each inhale. This way of breathing activates the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, which is the source of the relaxation response. Be mindful of breathing this way regularly and you will be on a path to inner peace! 4. Take a moment at the start and end of each day to name three things that you are grateful for. Gratitude grows contentedness and happiness, which we all desire. 5. Do something kind and generous for someone else every day. This deepens our sense of connection to the well-being of others, which contributes to our well-being and that of the planet as a whole! 042

Women’s Health and Fertility

Nicola Finley M.D., Physician

1. Help prevent osteoporosis by: Eating a calcium rich diet, doing weight bearing and strength exercises, limiting alcohol and caffeine, smoking cessation, avoiding medications that increase bone loss, doing blood work to look for medical conditions contributing to bone loss, and doing balance training to prevent falls. 2. For women who want to be pro-active about fertility, I encourage them to live a healthy lifestyle before they start trying to conceive. 3. Fit integrative medicine in where needed. I often refer guests to our nutritionists, exercise physiologists, psychologists, healing touch providers and acupuncturists. 4. Figure out what you will enjoy doing for exercise and do that until you don’t enjoy it; when you stop enjoying it, switch to something else. Having someone to exercise with can be a good motivational strategy as well – be it a personal trainer, a family member or a friend. 5. Minimise any barriers that may prevent you from exercising. For example, always have a set of workout clothes and sneakers in your office so they are accessible when you need them. If you’re at home, automatically change into your workout clothes in the morning as a gentle reminder to exercise.

ALL ABOUT Okra, also known as ‘lady's finger’ or ‘bamia’ is a popular nutritious vegetable of North-East African origin. The pods are usually gathered while they are green, tender and at immature stage. The plant is cultivated throughout the tropical and warm temperate regions around the world for their fibrous fruits or ‘pods’. Bamia grows best in welldrained and manure-rich soil. The Okra plant bears numerous dark green coloured pods measuring 5-15 cm in length. It takes about 45-60 days to get ready-to-harvest fruits. Internally, the pods feature small, round, mucilaginous white coloured seeds arranged in vertical rows. The pods are handpicked while just short of reaching maturity and eaten as a vegetable.

1. When cooked, Okra turns into what can only be described as bit of a goo-fest. This can be limited by preparing the Okra with acidic ingredients first, such as vinegar or lemon juice. 2. Okra leaves can be eaten raw in salads and are supposed to be ridiculously good for you. 3. Don’t wash your Okra until you’re ready to eat it. Otherwise, you’ll just end up with the whole goo situation again! 4. Roasted Okra seeds can be ground to make a drink similar to coffee. As we all know, you can never have too much coffee. 5. Move aside Kale, there’s a new super food in town! Okra is known as a super veggie due to its crazy high levels of vitamin A, vitamin C and antioxidants. 6. In the Caribbean islands, Okra is cooked and enjoyed in soup, often with fish. 7. The first people to cultivate Okra were the ancient Egyptians. 8. Avoid buying older or larger Okra. They’re used to make rope and paper. 044

YUMMY FOR THEIR LITTLE TUMMY:

Child Friendly Chocolate Pudding Sherifa Alasousi

E

very child will eventually discover the world of chocolate; and when they do, they will never forget how good it is. Babies less than 1 year old should avoid chocolate, particularly dark and milk chocolate which contain caffeinelike substances. Caffeine is unsuitable for very small children because of its stimulating effect. As children reach one year old, they can tolerate small amounts of white chocolate, which contains less caffeine. In this kid-friendly pudding I use chocolate, bananas, avocado, dates and peanut butter. These ingredients are not only delicious but extremely healthy and nutritious. Here are the facts: Avocados are rich in healthy fats, folate, carotenoids and are extremely heart healthy. lBananas provide vitamin B6, potassium, fiber and natural sweetness. lChocolate provides antioxidants and magnesium. lPeanut butter adds protein and even more healthy fats. l

METHOD Step one: Add three dates into a bowl of hot water and keep it aside until it's soft. Step two: Add one banana and half an avocado into the blender and blend until you get a smooth paste. Step three: Add 2 tablespoons of organic unsweetened cocoa powder into the paste and blend. I personally add the two tablespoons of coco powder into a cup of hot milk then add it into the blender to form a soft silky paste. Step four: Add your softened dates one by one into the paste and blend. Make sure you taste as you add the dates, to get the sweetness you like. Step five: Add 2 tablespoons of peanut butter to the mix to get that rich taste and the rich thickness of a pudding.

This dish can be served warm, cold or hot. Warm: by adding the ‘hot chocolate’ to the paste. Cold: add the mixture to a bowl and keep it in the fridge for half an hour before serving. Hot: add the mixture to a bowl or a glass and place in a preheated oven for 15 minutes at 180 degrees. I could not serve pudding without a deliciously silky whip cream on top. Here is a simple way to do it: Whip some organic whip cream and add some shredded coconut as you whip. You can also add berries and fruits; my husband enjoys this pudding with nuts on top. Show your family lots of love. Nothing speaks love more than a beautiful, healthy bowl of pudding! Bon appetite! www.cpmagazine.net

WORLD SIGHT DAY

W

e usually take our sight for granted, not really spending a lot of thought on how much we use it daily. Our eyesight is the most important of our five senses. Without it, simple tasks such as walking, brushing our teeth or putting on our shoes would be extremely difficult. Our eyesight needs to be preserved and cared for continually. World Sight Day this year fell on 13th October 2016. It is a day, annually set aside on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on and visual impairment. Blindness refers to complete visual loss. Visual impairment is the decreased ability to see, which causes problems that cannot be corrected by spectacles or contact lenses. For those with visual impairment, the best obtainable vision when corrected is 60% with spectacles or contact lenses. Here are some distressing facts about blindness and visual impairment:

lApproximately

285 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness. lOf these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment. lAbout three quarters of all blindness related cases can be prevented or treated. lLeading causes of blindness are cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, corneal opacities and diabetic retinopathy. 048

OCTOBER 2016

lAge related blindness is increasing globally. Similarly blindness caused by uncontrolled diabetes is accelerating. l90% of blind people live in developing or low-income countries. l80% of visual impairment is avoidable. It can be readily treated or prevented in developing countries. lThe number of people blind from infectious causes has greatly reduced in the past 20 years. lAn estimated 19 million children worldwide are visually impaired. lAbout 65% of all people who are visually impaired are aged 50 and older. lIncreasing elderly populations in many countries mean that more people will be at risk of age-related visual impairment.

This year's theme for World Sight Day is #STRONGERTOGETHER. Let us try to be stronger together for our vision by educating each other about the need for eye care. Help spread the message to friends and family about the importance of preserving their vision. The majority of eye conditions have no symptoms or pain in the early stages. Therefore, early detection is of utmost importance to prevent avoidable blindness and vision loss. At International Optique, we provide eye-care for the whole family. Nada Alawi Noor Alawi The sisters behind Meet the Bahraini sisters adding a new twist to a classic wardrobe favourite. Nada and Noor Alawi have their mother to thank for their love of art and fashion. Inspired from an early age, the girls went on to create their own line of exquisite fashion accessories, collaborating with internationally renowned artists to boast a unique collection of scarves and apparel, packaged to perfection in a precious Annada teal box.

Please introduce yourselves to our readers.

We are two Bahraini sisters, with love for fashion and true appreciation for art. We believe elegance is a way of life and accessories are a woman’s unique signature, creating a window to her individual style and personality.

How and when did you get interested in fashion and accessories?

Growing up, we’ve always looked to our mother who is, to this day, the most elegant woman we’ve ever known. Picking out her outfits every morning in itself was an art; she had a style that was timeless, and a deep love for lipsticks. Yes, lipsticks! We, like many young girls, used to sneak into her closet to get our hands on her lipstick collection and to have endless dress up adventures. Now that we’ve grown up, an elegant life with a personal accessorized signature has simply become a way of existence. The same goes for the daily essential lipstick coat (thanks, mom!). Through her, we came to understand that fashion is a powerful thing. But it does not matter as much as style; a personal stamp of identity that is yours and yours only. It is important to note that it is not just a love for fashion and accessorizing that is behind Annada. We’ve also deveolped an intense respect for art; how it visually makes up the building blocks of our culture and simply brightens a regular day with colour, emotion and ideas. Looking at art is like pausing for a 052

OCTOBER 2016

moment to smell the roses; it’s almost meditative. The simple act of standing and looking at a painting, feeling what it wants you to feel, translating it into an emotional language, adds so much substance to your life.

When did the concept of Annada begin?

Nada: It did not come up at once nor was it a fully formed idea. To understand how it came along, you have to know that an artistic point of view was always part of my life. Since high school, I have had a love for the creative arts. I used to go the extra mile to beautify everything I did; I even went as far as designing business cards! Back then, I did not realize that was a venture I could seek after graduation. Fast-forward to my postuniversity life, I ended up in the Oil and Gas industry. Needless to say, that did not cut it for me. I constantly needed to ‘wash away from (my) soul the dust of everyday life’ as Picasso put it. I started taking painting classes, that’s when the idea for Annada started coming to me in pieces over the span of a few years. Finally, in the summer of 2011, the idea seemed fully formed enough to share! In my bedroom one night, I told my sister, Noor, about it. ‘Why didn’t you tell me earlier?!’ was the response I received, which fuelled my excitement even more. We decided to work hard together to launch Annada in Jewelry Arabia that November.

Fun fact: Annada’s anniversary falls on Noor’s birthday, September 18th! We’ve set off with two highly celebrated artists; Abbas Almosawi and Hassan Haidar. We set up our shop online at annadaonline. com and from there the collection continued to grow. We have now collaborated with over twenty artists from the region and have gained a loyal following to whom we are very thankful.

How did you come up with the name Annada? What does it mean?

Annada, is Al-Nada (‫)النّدى‬, with an Arabic stress (ّ) on the N/‫ ن‬, this stress eliminates the L/‫ ل‬when pronounced. It is my name, because you cannot get more original than who you are; and the brand is your reflection. Furthermore, Anna (‫)أنا‬, further signifies individuality. Annada was simply the perfect choice!

What challenges did you face when establishing your business and how did you overcome them?

Running a business is like being in a reality show - every day is a different episode with a different theme. Obstacles are diverse and you have to know that proactivity is key. Challenges vary and we take them one at a time. The secret is to stay focused and break issues into small pieces.

What makes your scarves different?

Our scarves are printed with existing art, carefully curated to translate beautifully on silk, cotton, wools and cashmeres. They are timeless in form but deeply sentimental and carry the depth of a painting that you can get lost in. We give artists another medium for sharing their art and their message. We give them exposure through the power of fashion. Our scarves come in different sizes (long, slim, mini, square, etc.) and materials (silk, silk cotton, silk twill, wool, cashmere, etc.) covering all needs and styles for both genders (we’ve got pocket squares!). www.cpmagazine.net

053

Annada scarves are an experience; each step that goes into the unboxing of an Annada teal box has been thought through. From untying the bow, finding a card with a story about the art piece, the delicate tissue paper, to the scarf itself, all of which make up a precious Annada gifting experience, whether the gift is for you or a loved one.

What is your designer/artist selection process?

We select based on art that can be transferred onto a textile medium in a complementing and enhancing manner. We love working with a wide variety of artists with their different styles and techniques. We are constantly collecting artwork and have a database that keeps growing. When it’s time to put together a seasonal collection, we will select the art based on a mood and colour forecast. We sample the scarves, lay them all out in our design studio for the team to go over each one, discuss it, and style it in a variety of ways; all to make sure that we have a coherent collection ready for production. All in all, it is a fun collaborative process which we love!

Who are your favourite artists/designers?

All of the artists we work with are special and unique and that’s why we love working with them. Each one brings something different to the table; each one is a bright soul, and each one is ever so lovable. As for the international designers I admire, the top of the list would always be Chanel. Her work philosophy resonates with me, as does her ability to dress women in comfortable timeless cuts in a time when that was almost unheard of. This was admirable and changed the face of the industry. She is an amazing designer and role model. Alberta Farreti, Carolina Herrera and MaxMara are also some of the recognized players in the industry whose work I admire. They follow a chic comfort design style that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with. I strongly believe that only when a woman is comfortable, does she shine.

Did you collaborate with any Kuwaiti designers?

We’ve been speaking to a few Kuwaiti artists and we would love to speak to more! We believe Kuwait to be a great creative hub here in the GCC; there’s a lot of talent that we would love to be part of our Annada world.

How do you suggest wearing your scarves?

It can be used as a choker accessory; the effortless addition of colour simply draped on your shoulders; the elegant bow tied loosely over your shirt; or the right dash of colour used as the pocket-square to a sharp suit. It can be a bag charm, a wrist accessory, or it could be wrapped around your bag handle. With a scarf, the possibilities are endless!

When you design a scarf, do you think of one particular person who will be wearing it?

We try to think of those who look for something more than fashion; a classic elegance and a story to tell. We think of the independent woman, the unstoppable force, the girl who’s in complete control of her life. She’s someone whose ideal day out is coffee at an Art Museum. She will reach the museum’s gift shop and try to take as much of the art that she’s fallen in love with home with her; the hidden artist, the dreamer, the romantic, the thinker and the intellectual, the lover of art, culture and elegance. We also think of the sophisticated and cultured man. The man who defines himself; is style-conscious and modern.

How often do you come up with a new collection?

We release two collections every year; one for Spring/Summer and the other for Autumn/Winter. In between we also make exclusive collections. An example of this is our latest one, titled ‘Horse & Rider’, which was done in collaboration with New York based, Dahesh Museum of Art. The collection features the sketches of 19th century French artist, Rosa Bonheur, incorporated on silk and Super Fine Wool. 054

OCTOBER 2016

Why do you think that scarves are enjoying such a renaissance at the moment?

During the past few years the scarf accessory has been reborn on the runway and made its way to social fashion influencers who have showed the style alert community what a scarf can add to an outfit. From there, it became the main subject of certain upcoming trends, such as the choker scarf and the slim scarf trend. These are expected to be widespread as we break into AW16/17. Furthermore, a scarf is an essential piece for modesty. The West has come to realize that the East looks for that and is more than willing to pay for it. Dolce and Gabbana have made their own line of abayas and head-scarves; and just last week, the first ever collection featuring only head-covered models appeared on one of the runways in New York Fashion Week. From our point of view, we’ve noticed nowadays that many women who lead busy yet elegant lives, tend to dress in chic and comfortable simplicity; a simplicity that needs a small extra finishing touch of colour and movement. Many find that only a scarf can achieve that. Nevertheless, scarves are an accessory that transcends trends and hypes. It is a timeless classic and has developed itself to be essential. It is a statement for luxury, style and elegance; a signature that will never be faltered by time.

Where are your scarves and accessories available?

Annada products are available online at annadaonline.com, in our very own Annada Store in Seef Mall, Bahrain, as well as Saks Fifth Avenue, Bahrain. In Kuwait, we are found in Designer’s Lounge, and we also have numerous other retail partners across the GCC and Europe. You can find the full listing here: https://www.annadaonline.com/pages/find-annada-at

What your future plans?

We would love to widen our range of products! This year we’ve introduced a stationary line and added bracelets inspired by art to our accessories collection. We’ve also introduced a leather jacket line (with silk art-printed lining) and are further developing that to include a men’s range. We would love to expand our apparel line beyond that, as well as open more Annada stores!

Your message for us at CP Magazine:

You must always look for beauty in everything you do! I cannot stress how important that is and don’t forget to have fun accessorizing. It is a simple and personal process, a process of taking care of the small details that make you who you are. A look can go a long way by simply being meticulous.

DESIERTO

HACKSAW RIDGE

THE BIRTH OF A NATION

What begins as a hopeful journey to seek a better life becomes a harrowing and primal fight for survival when a deranged, rifle-toting vigilante chases a group of unarmed men and women through the treacherous U.S.-Mexican border. In the harsh, unforgiving desert terrain, the odds are stacked firmly against them as they continuously discover there’s nowhere to hide from the unrelenting, merciless killer.

The extraordinary true story of conscientious objector Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing a gun. Believing that the War was just but killing was nevertheless wrong, he was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon. As an army medic Doss singlehandedly evacuated the wounded near enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. He was the first conscientious objector to ever win the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Set against the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities - against himself and his fellow slaves - Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.

The horrific story of five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large compound. The energy with this new system is harvested as before by braking and pedalling downhill and it now also converts mechanical energy into electrical energy thanks to the Integrated Kinetic Energy Recovery System (K.E.R.S.). In that way, additional energy is generated to recharge the light integrated lithium-ion battery and released to give the extra boost when riding uphill. The self-charging mode can also be deactivated and set to the highest assistance level providing constant pedal support for at least 35 km (20 miles) at a maximum speed of 25 km/hour (15 miles per hour). When the battery is empty, it can be recharged easily by connecting it to the power socket. Through the free app, users can set the level of pedal assistance, track their route and even lock their bike remotely. With an ultra portable design, the VELLO is also the lightest e-bike on the market (clocking in at less than 12kg/ 26lbs) and capable of folding down to suitcase size for easy transport and carry.

MAX, the largest & most trusted value fashion brand in the region, has announced the launch of its latest collection for Winter 2016 for men, women and children. The new collection borrows its theme from the fashionable bygone era of the 1970s, and is available across all MAX stores in Kuwait. The collection features a range of apparel and diverse color palate that epitomize the casual style of daytime and the classic sophistication of the evening. The range for ladies, has adopted a relaxed look to capture the beautiful spirit of the winter season. The focus is on rich browns, ochres and camel tones and muted greys. There is a hint of midnight blue offering an urbane statement and the use of teal and dark espresso brings depth to the collection. This season also sees the return of the layered look, with longer hemlines and belted waistlines paying homage to the classic silhouette. Furthermore, the line between casual and formal attire is blurred, with luxury applications such as embellishment and dulled metallics adding appeal to daywear items. The men’s range of smart casual styling reverberate the retro theme. The collection has a relaxed feel, accentuated by comfortable shapes and cuts that have continued to be a trend for the past couple of seasons. The combination of gunmetal and lumberjack red has become an essential theme color for the season. Harmonized with the fashion range for women, camel brown emerges as an important accent tone for menswear. The collection embodies casual understatement with pine green and an injection of mustard yellow adds brightness and vitality. www.cpmagazine.net

GIGI HADID JOINS FORCES WITH REEBOK TO TELL NEXT PHASE OF BE MORE HUMAN CAMPAIGN

Global icon stands behind brand platform to reject expectations of perfection through #PerfectNever movement

G

igi Hadid, style icon, fitness advocate and trendsetter, joins Reebok’s community of inspiring women as the newest face of the brand’s #PerfectNever movement; a powerful and inspirational call to action that asks women around the world to celebrate the beauty of imperfection and champions Reebok’s intrinsic message of self-betterment. Together, Gigi and Reebok will challenge women to use physical fitness as an escape to drown out all of the negativity that surrounds them by deploying the three-point principles of the Reebok delta that puts forth the social, physical and mental benefits of fitness. As an international supermodel Hadid is no stranger to the pressures of perfection placed on women, living under the constant scrutiny of a global audience of critics. It is through fitness that Hadid has found her tranquility. “Working out isn’t only physical for me. It’s mental. It helps me escape the noise in my head. It’s the only time my mind goes quiet.” shares Hadid. “When I was a competitive athlete, I used to be so focused on being perfect that my coaches would take me out of competing all together. I’d focus on my mistakes which would breed more missteps - a domino effect. Until I learned to change the channel, to re-focus, re-set. It was my mistakes, my imperfections that motivated me most.”
