HAPPINESS noun

hap•pi•ness: a state of well-being and contentment : JOY Merriam - Webster Dictionary What is happiness to you? Is it a goal? A place? A person? So many different happiness ‘gurus’ are claiming that they can teach you how to find it, but the funny thing about happiness is everyone is hustling and chasing it and not many people seem to understand what it is in the first place. When people meet you they ask you things like, ‘Are you married? Do you have a job? Do you have a house?’, as if life is some list you need to tick off. But what nobody asks is, ‘Are you happy?’ Some people spend their whole lives working themselves to the point of burnout thinking that the big paycheck will deliver their idea of happiness. Some chase the idea of the perfect partner, house or body. But will any of those things actually bring you joy? There’s no doubt that having a comfortable income, someone by your side or a healthy body, will bring you some level of contentment - but is it everything? And will

the satisfaction last? If the answer was yes, we wouldn’t be hearing about millionaires hanging themselves in their apartments, leaving behind loved ones. We wouldn’t be seeing celebrities struggle with substance abuse and anxiety. After all, they seem to have everything most of us are hustling after, don’t they? Is it even fair for us to place the burden of happiness on something else or someone else other than ourselves? And what would that say about our control over our lives? If we spend our lives waiting for something or someone to deliver us happiness, guess what we will be unraveling instead? A long life of disappointment and frustration. I know a girl who spent years struggling with obesity and she was miserable because she thought if she had enough money to get a gastric bypass she would finally be happy and confident. Well, one day she got the money, and she got the surgery, and she lost all the weight that she once thought was the source of her misery. Is she happy? Is

she confident? Six years after she lost all the weight, she is still the same miserable self conscious woman she was the day before she was wheeled into the operating room. The way she perceived herself never changed. People seem to be really talented when it comes to listing all the reasons they may have not to be happy. ‘My kids are exhausting me’ ‘My partner and I are fighting’ ‘My job is stressing me out’ ‘My mother is ill’ ‘My car broke down’ The list goes on and on about all the unfortunate things they have fallen victim to. Alternatives: ‘I am grateful I have the ability to bear children who are happy and active’ ‘I am grateful that my partner and I still have the willingness to work things out’ ‘I am grateful I have a job that puts a roof over my head’ ‘I am grateful that I am able to take care of my mother and make her comfortable’ ‘I am grateful I can afford private transportation’ Saying you are grateful does not cancel out the negative situations life throws your way, but it pivots the focus of your energy away from them. If you focus on why you can’t feel happy, you never will. The reason is, feeling happy or unhappy is never an external thing. It is completely internal. No matter what life blesses you with, if you don’t have the right mindset configured from within you, nothing will every bring you joy. If you wait for your partner, your boss or circumstance to make you happy, you will never have true control over your life and how you really feel. It’s the same with anger. So many people are quick to blame others or situations for making them angry and acting out. Truth is, things happen, and they continue to happen all the time to everyone. Whether they are pleasant or unpleasant things, you choose how to react to them. Nobody else can make you feel or act a certain way. I was very miserable at my job. I would reach the office every single morning and complain about everything that was wrong with the unpleasant situation I was in. Mostly, I was miserable because my effort was not being recognized. It ate away at my energy, it made me bitter, literally made me ill and I can’t imagine that I was a ray of sunshine to anyone who stopped by. One day I got sick of it. I got sick of the heaviness of the air I had learnt to breathe in every morning. Quitting my job was not a practical solution at the time and I realized that if I didn’t change my mindset I would continue to feel this way no matter where I worked. So I asked myself how to bring happiness in this situation. I realized that I had placed my idea of happiness as a goal to be reached when my boss would finally recognize my hard work, and that was unfair to me. I was working hard anyway wasn’t I? And what if our

bosses have their own issues and don’t know how to express gratitude? Maybe they have insecurities about hardworking subordinates (believe me, that’s a thing) or a million other reasons why we may never get the reaction we are looking for from the person we have burdened with ‘making us happy’. So I decided that I wasn’t going to work towards having my boss express anything or reward me with anything. I decided to work to satisfy myself and to congratulate myself when I had done a good job. I decided to switch off the negative air and try to create a ripple effect within my own department. I began something I called ‘Happy Sunday’. Everyone hates the first day of the week, so instead of coming in and expressing how we all wished we were somewhere else, I decided to make Sundays something to look forward to. It wasn’t a big deal really. A co-worker and I started off by printing positive quotes and taping them on water bottles or pinning them on donuts and giving them out every Sunday morning. Every week we would do something simple like that and, at first, co-workers thought we were silly and that we were wasting our time. But guess what? People started to look forward to Sundays. If I wasn’t there on a Sunday people would notice and start asking about their missing treats. It brought us joy from a very simple thing; and we didn’t do it because we were looking for anything external to bring us satisfaction. A few months afterwards, we were called in to the office of our big boss. We were intimidated and worried. Why was the general manager asking to see us in person? He sat us down, pulled something out of his drawer and placed it on the table. To our surprise it was a water bottle with one of our quotes on it. He told us he noticed a shift in the staff and asked around and then found some of the things we had made. He was so impressed by the positive effect it had that he decided to take on the cost of any ideas we had to make employees happy. The point of this story is, when you shift your focus from waiting for someone to give you happiness, to focusing instead on bringing out the happiness within you, things you want start falling into place on their own. Happiness is not a thing. It is not a fast car or a shiny ring. It is not a purse or a piece of birthday cake. Happiness is an emotion. One you choose to look for. It is the way we can choose to experience things. Try writing five things you are grateful for every morning and every night. Keep doing it and notice the change within you. Choose to look for joy and love in any situation and watch how your life shifts. If you think that only sunshine can bring you happiness, then you have obviously never danced in the rain. “Keep choosing happiness daily, and happiness will keep choosing you back.” - Fawn Weaver

ANYONE FOR GOLF?

must admit, I’ve never been a huge fan of golf. It’s not that I dislike the game per se, it’s just that I can’t seem to get excited about it. Of course, I’m familiar with the big names; those players who have constantly dominated the leader boards in recent years. The likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose. Other names though, I’m less aware of. At the mention of Tommy Fleetwood, for example, I might say, ‘Is that the guy with the long hair?’ I was, of course, aware of the Ryder Cup taking place in Paris last month but my laid back ‘take it or leave it’ attitude towards the age-old sport remained unchanged. My husband, on the other hand, was behaving like a child in the run up to Christmas. He was literally counting the days (and hours) until the first fourball emerged from the club house on that crisp, sunny Friday morning. His excitement was palpable. I tried to mirror his shameless enthusiasm but being forced out of bed at 6.30am in time for the first tee-off didn’t exactly enamour me to his cause. Neither did it help when I asked him to explain the difference between a fourball and a foursome. His look of incredulity was priceless. I left him to it and went to make breakfast. I still don’t know the answer. But it wasn’t just my husband who had turned into a golfobsessed, couch potato overnight. The whole world, it seemed, had gone Ryder Cup mad! So what was it about this bi-annual 14

OCTOBER 2018

tournament to ignite such a response? The very first Ryder Cup took place in 1927 between Great Britain and Ireland and the United States. The British team was extended to include Europe in 1979, mainly thanks to the late, great, Seve Ballesteros, who wanted a slice of the action. The competition is named after Samuel Ryder, an English businessman who donated the trophy. I doubt he ever imagined the euphoria that winning his humble trophy would evoke. Particularly as there is no prize money involved. Yes, believe it or not, those competing for the Ryder Cup do it entirely for bragging rights with no financial incentive whatsoever. Apparently. Team USA got off to a flying start in Friday’s fourballs giving themselves a 3-1 advantage. The afternoon’s foursomes, however, turned things around for Europe who ended the day with a 5-3 lead. (What IS the difference between a fourball and a foursome?) Listening to my husband’s accounts of the day’s action, I found myself more interested than usual in his golfing tales. I was particularly surprised to learn that Tiger Woods and his partner, Patrick Reed, had lost their opening match against Europe’s Tommy Fleetwood (Is that the guy with the long hair?) and Francesco Molinari (Who?). ‘Didn’t Tiger Woods just win the Tour Championship in Atlanta?’ I asked, keen to show off my

(limited) golfing knowledge. ‘Yes, but he’s got a bad back,’ came the reply. Must be all that money he carries around. I may not have known much about ‘Moliwood’ (as Europe’s winning duo, Molinari and Fleetwood, were now known), but I did know at least one player in each of the other foursome teams. Garcia, McIlroy and Rose were names I’d come across countless times before and I surprised myself by whooping with delight at the news of their wins. ‘Are you getting excited about golf?’ my husband asked, with at least one raised eyebrow. Surely not. The next morning I was a little less reluctant to ride the Ryder Cup wave (well, if you can’t beat them...), so I took my place on the sofa ready to be enthralled. I’d already witnessed the crowd’s boisterous behaviour on the opening day with cries of ‘Get in the hole!’ a regular accompaniment to each tee shot, but I was somewhat taken aback by the actions of the players themselves. What happened to etiquette? The ridiculous snobbery associated with golf is one of the reasons I don’t watch it. Or play it. Although I did take lessons many years ago, before coming to the conclusion that there are better things to do than hit a ball with a stick for five hours (or more, in my case) at a time. Watching Saturday morning’s fourballs, however, was astonishing. Gone were the discreet nods of thanks to an appreciative audience, or the lifting of a cap in humble response. Instead, the players were punching the air with joy, high-fiving their partner, even chestbumping on the greens! Clearly, this trophy meant more to them than the average PGA tournament. But why? Since 1979, Europe has won the Ryder Cup eleven times. The USA emerged victorious eight times. Only one year (1989), resulted in a tie. It’s the most important team tournament in the golfing calendar and competition for selection is fierce. Each captain must select twelve players to represent his team. The USA captain (Jim Furyk) was selected by the PGA of America and Europe’s captain (Denmark’s Thomas Bjørn) was chosen by the European Tour. Team Europe is determined as follows: -The top four players from the European points list -The four highest-ranking players on the World points list (excluding those already qualified above) -Four ‘captain’s picks’ The American team is determined slightly differently in that the top eight players are selected from the American points list plus four of the captain’s own selections. In other words, if you don’t make the grade from the necessary lists, you’d better hope that the captain likes you. So, having made the team, donned their colours and pumped up the spectators to fever pitch, the players were clearly ready for another day of competitive fairway action. Now this was my kind of golf! The morning’s fourballs saw Europe win 3-1. The afternoon’s foursomes were a tie at 2-2. (Remind me what the difference is again?) This meant Europe would be going into the final day with a 10-6 lead.

The match between Casey and Koepka was all square and the Fleetwood (Is that the guy with the long hair?) and Finau contest resulted in a win for the US. The European crowd were beginning to fidget. Up next came Ian Poulter and Dustin Johnson. I had no recollection of seeing Johnson before, despite him being the world’s number one golfer (until being knocked off his perch by Justin Rose). Clearly, Johnson was having a bad day and found the water more times than he’ll care to remember. The match saw a passionate Poulter finishing 2 up. By this time, Thorbjorn Olesen had already beaten Jordan Spieth 5&4, so Poulter’s win took Europe’s points tally to 13.5. They needed 14.5 to win. Up stepped Francesco Molinari. After three days of watching this Italian golfing talent, I no longer needed to ask ‘Who?’ He’d already secured maximum points from the first two days of the tournament and was on course for a Ryder Cup whitewash. Fitting then, that he should be the one to wrap up proceedings for a European victory. Sadly, it didn’t come from a cool 20ft putt. Neither did it come from a masterful chip. It came from a disastrous tee shot from his opponent, Phil Mickelson, who, having stuck his ball in the water at the 16th, promptly conceded the match. Not that it mattered. However it ended, Molinari became the first European ever to score five points in Ryder Cup history. Bravo! The scenes that followed ranged from emotional (some players hugged, kissed and cried) to euphoric (others ran laps around the green with their arms in the air). Wives ran from their positions in the crowd to congratulate their husbands (and everyone else’s) and champagne was sprayed and drank in equal quantities. As news of the victory spread, so too did the volume. However, four matches were still being played. I pitied those players unable to celebrate but admired their composure as they continued their games, securing another 3 points for Europe. Henrik Stenson won his match against Bubba Watson, Alex Noren beat Bryson DeChambeau and, more importantly, Sergio Garcia defeated Rickie Fowler, thus seeing him overtake Nick Faldo as Europe’s all-time leading points scorer in the Ryder Cup with 25.5 points. Not bad for a ‘wild card’ selection.

By now, the party was in full swing. Paris, it seemed, was getting used to victory celebrations and this one could rival any of those seen after France’s World Cup victory in July. The scene in my own lounge was pretty jubilant too as I joined my husband running rings around the sofa and, once more (this time, unreservedly) whooping in delight. Who would’ve thought that a game of golf could induce such merriment? In fact, who would’ve predicted that Tommy Fleetwood (you know, the guy with the long hair) could be my new hero? And who would’ve known that a shy, little known (in my world, anyway) Italian called Francesco, could break American hearts? I still may not be prepared to waste an entire day trying to coax a tiny ball into an equally tiny hole but I may be slightly more willing to watch a game or two on the TV, particularly if ‘Moliwood’ are making an appearance. As for the Ryder Cup, roll on Whistling Straights. Wherever that is.

Sunday was singles day, the rules of which, thankfully, I did understand. Rory McIlroy was up first against American’s Justin Thomas. Well, that’s one in the bag for Europe, I thought to myself. Lesson number one - never be overconfident. Rory had an absolute nightmare at the 18th. Not only did his ball land in the bunker (twice), he then found the water with this third shot. A horrible end to his Ryder Cup tournament and a gifted point to the US. Europe’s Justin Rose didn’t have it easy either, losing 3&2 to Simpson. (3&2, in case you’re wondering, means Simpson was leading by 3 holes and there were only 2 holes left, making it impossible for Rose to either win or draw). Bearing in mind that Justin Rose had, only eight days earlier, won a $10million bonus for being the highest scoring golfer on the PGA tour, it was a disappointing and somewhat surprising result. Equally surprising was Tiger Wood’s defeat at the hands of Jon Rahm (Who?). In fact, Tiger’s defeat meant he’d failed to win a point at the 2018 Ryder Cup and lost his singles match for the first time in 21 years. Sunday’s results were proving to be far from predictable. www.cpmagazine.net

Would you please introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Noëlle. I am a corporate wellness strategist, life coach and neuro-linguistic programming practitioner. A third culture kid, I was born and raised in France. My father is Egyptian, my mother is Tunisian and I made Dubai my home many years back.

Tell us about your education.

I worked for nearly 10 years in the Arts and Culture sector, supervising a wide range of cultural projects and managing international events. I have a master’s degree in international affairs with a focus on cultural diplomacy. Following a series of life altering events, I found a new passion in positive psychology and self help and decided to study life coaching, neuro-linguistic programming and hypnosis.

What made you decide to become a life coach? And did you ever imagine you would be one?

A few years ago while enduring difficult circumstances, I came across the world of coaching and it literally changed my life. I wanted to make sure I could learn all I could about this field to be able to take it forward.

Does a coach sort out my life for me? What’s their role exactly?

In a way, yes. But a coach doesn’t sort out your life for you, only you can do that. However, part of coach’s responsibility is to support behavioral modifications and personal growth which will in turn help you reach the goals you set for yourself.

What’s the difference between coaching and counseling?

Both approaches are quite different and complementary at the same time. In general, counseling focuses on identifying the causes of past problems and addresses long term personal issues in depth. Whereas coaching focuses on solving issues at the present time and setting goals for the future.

What are the biggest misconceptions about life coaching?

In my view the biggest misconception is that life coaching is only for people who have problems or can’t succeed on their own. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. The majority of top performers, athletes and successful people are using coaching to navigate towards more success. Think of it as your secret weapon to help you smash your goals!

My approach is very simple. To me, happiness is a choice. We are limitless individuals and the faster we accept this as our reality, the closer we get to our dreams. What are some of the tools that you use during your coaching sessions?

Depending on the challenges faced I use neuro-linguistic programming tools mostly, but also time line therapy, visualization exercises and hypnosis.

What is the best thing you have ever heard from a client?

‘I didn’t think it was possible.’

What do you love the most about your profession?

It is extremely rewarding to be part of someone’s journey and to be able to witness positive changes. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

What’s been the most important moment in your career so far?

Definitely the day I decided to make a move from a fulfilling career in the cultural sector to setting up my own company offering corporate wellness programmes and life coaching.

What advice would you give about finding the right life coach?

Research, research and research! Check qualifications, experience and certifications. Once you find someone you would like to work with, go with your instinct and your gut feelings. It is important that you feel comfortable with your coach, as the two of you will be spending a lot of time together fulfilling your goals.

What’s next for Noëlle? What are you currently working on?

I am developing a series of coaching programmes and free tools that will be available both online on my website and offline through workshops and training. Also a very exciting project involving collaborations but I can’t discuss it now so stay tuned!

What are some of your hobbies?

I can never be in the same place for too long, I have a passion for travelling. I make it a point to discover at least three new places every year. Apart from my travelling bug, I enjoy yoga, playing with essential oils and water sports.

What is your work/life balance mantra?

Find purpose in what you do and you will never work a day in your life.

What would you advise people who suffer from stress?

Realistically, we can’t fully avoid stress but we can definitely control it. A few tricks here and there can keep our daily stressors in check. What I usually recommend is to set a powerful morning routine. For example waking up 10 to 15 minutes earlier using a sunlight alarm clock as opposed to a scary snooze button. Then, while still laying in bed, visualise your ‘perfect day’. As the day goes by, use breathing exercises to deflate any anxiety that may have accumulated.

Do you have a final piece of advice or insight for our readers?

We tend to be very harsh on ourselves. Take a minute to acknowledge everything you have surpassed and how far you have come. Well done you!

GOING UNDERGROUND

s much as I love Kuwait, I do get frustrated by the traffic. Endless queues, impatient drivers and soaring temperatures all add up to uncomfortable journeys on the state’s roads. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve wished for an alternative mode of transport; like the Metro, for example. Visitors to Europe or the U.S. know only too well how efficient the underground rail system is. It’s reliable and cheap and gets you from A to B surprising quickly. Wouldn’t it be fabulous to have such a system in Kuwait? A method of transport that avoids lengthy queues of traffic, irate drivers and the blistering summer heat. Or would it? During a recent trip to London, I was a frequent user of the underground. When faced with the question of how to get from one area of the city to another, it was the obvious choice. A taxi would cost a small fortune and, despite being able to use bus lanes, would still get caught up in the usual traffic chaos. Buses, whilst inexpensive, never get anywhere fast; the constant stopping and starting simply adding to the already sluggish journey. Driving my own car wasn’t an option. The congestion charges alone would’ve have forced me to declare myself bankrupt very quickly. Of course, I could have walked. However, not knowing the streets of London particularly well and not wishing to arrive at my destination looking either beetroot red from the city heat or dripping wet from an impromptu shower, I chose not to take this particular path. So, the tube it was. The first thing that hit me was the heat. It felt like I was being blasted by a giant, turbo-charged hairdryer. There was no escaping this Sirocco-type wind either in the tunnels or on the platform. I certainly needn’t have bothered doing my hair that morning! Once on the train, the temperature plummeted. The air conditioning, whilst necessary, was numbing. Having peeled off my outer layer of clothing whilst waiting to embark, I was forced to display my poor contortion skills as I attempted to re-dress. Not an easy

task when forced to stand in a high-speed carriage. In a matter of minutes, the train was packed. As the number of passengers rose, so too did the temperatures and, once again, I was unzipping, detangling and overheating. With the crowds, came the discomfort. There is no such thing as personal space on the underground. Wherever I turned, I was faced with someone else’s arm pit. Sadly, not all of them had bothered to deodorize that morning. But body odour wasn’t the only stomach-churner. Many passengers were using the carriage as a dining room, filling the train with the not-so-delicious aroma of cheap coffee, greasy burgers and sickly donuts. My own breakfast threatened to re-introduce itself, two hours after being consumed. Thankfully, many people disembarked at King’s Cross and I was able to find a seat; but not before having to sweep away the remnants of someone else’s picnic. All too soon the carriage once more began to fill up and my smidgen of space around me was newly invaded. This time, I was eyelevel with a number of alien posteriors. I closed my eyes – and my nostrils – and counted the stations until the last stop. The first thing I needed to do when leaving the station was find a toilet. But it wasn’t the bursting desire to use the toilet itself that forced me to search for a public convenience, it was the need to wash my hands after holding the germridden grip handles and poles. I could only imagine the bacterium, disease and viruses clinging to these aids and had no desire to have them breeding on my skin for a moment longer. Returning to Kuwait, sitting in a tedious, stifling, traffic jam (albeit in a comfortable, cool, spacious vehicle), I was forced to ask myself if an underground rail system would be preferable to this annoyingly familiar, road disarray. And the answer? Probably not.

MY BLUSHING BRIDE …the sequel

t is always discussed, often disputed, how to prepare the bridal venue, how to choose the best makeup artist and the best dress designer for that wedding gown. If I remember correctly, the importance of hair dos and don’ts are also widely debated plus a host of other really important stuff such as the menu, seating arrangements and selection of flowers; not forgetting the invitations. But as I re-read my article again just to spell check, I realized that in order to be spot on and have a truly picture-perfect bride and a memorable wedding day, one has to get prepared; and I mean seriously prepared. Because not only are all these preparations necessary, they give you that boost of beauty and that much needed self confidence that all brides-to-be need before the big day. And in order to achieve that au naturel high through un-natural ways, I’m spilling the beans and the worst kept secrets now. So get ready, this will be epic! Being beautiful is one thing, but feeling that you are the most beautiful girl in the world at your wedding is a must. Since we live in the era of clinics, treatments and all that is artificially enhanced to make us younger and more beautiful, why not use all these services to come to the rescue and serve us with the right dose at our time of need? What I’m really saying is there is no harm in a bit of Botox if it serves the common good of our beauty. Let’s call it a facial freshen-up, a booster for our beauty and confidence. As for how much is needed and where, leave this to the clinics you trust to advise you, and do listen

to their advice because they do know best. You must be able to look and feel naturally perfected after any procedure, plus it’s very important to follow any kind of protocol that might be given to you by your doctor afterwards. For example, if you are a smoker, do stay away from nicotine and its accomplices if you want your filler to set at the right place on your face. Furthermore, Botox results look much better in a week’s time if you avoid sleeping on your side. Remember that the doctor’s orders are there to help achieve the maximum result and without any future facial regrets. As for body and face peeling, which is on trend at the moment, try to schedule your sessions at least two or three months prior to your big day. If you make that mistake and peel away a month before the wedding date, your future husband might not appreciate all that reptilian scaly skin (even if he does love you to bits) plus you won’t be able to enjoy the beach or the sun in a bathing suit on your honeymoon; not to mention that honeymoon lingerie you picked out for the occasion! Being and looking beautiful is hard work so for all those lucky ladies that wake up gorgeous, I salute you. Keep it going ladies! For the most and rest of us that need some extra help here and there, beauty is hard work. But the more you are at it, the better you get at it! So Kudos for us ladies too! he Fashion Launch and Trunk Show in the heart of Milan, ‘Something A La Mode’, presents the Bailiss Atelier Collection. Fashion curator, Veronica Sheynina, takes us directly to the world of the exclusive Studio Bailiss. The Russian brand is showcasing the new pieces of its SS19 collection and some of the most popular looks named ‘must-have’ by the European press. Being there gives me a feeling of modest elegancy, combining modern clothes and flexibility with original emphasis on the lines of the cut, accentuated by the machine embroidery. Coats of cashmere become the protagonists of the collection presented in Milan. Here, the embroidery comes to the fore, making each coat a unique art piece. Up to 35 different colours and only natural fabrics, will give special pleasure to the wearer. The Bailiss Studio consists not only of projects of co-creation with customers, but also in providing a unique experience. From the concept discussions to the drawings, to samples, to their final decorations and the production, to mixing complex machining with manual embroidery; this has now become the calling card for the brand. Milan, as the capital of the Italian fashion industry, gives us new names and in this season MFW SS19, I am going to choose Bailiss Atelier Studio as my ‘day & night’ flexible wardrobe!

Stylish Escape The 2018 Escape features Ford’s latest design language for a bold and sporty look. A large upper trapezoidal grille and a smaller lower grille are flanked by sleek headlamps incorporating LED daytime running lights and complimented by stylish fog lamps. Tasteful LED tail lights complete the sporty look, while a range of 17 and 18 inch alloy wheel designs are also available to complete the look of the vehicle. A power-operated retractable tow bar automatically stores itself out of sight below the rear bumper when not in use to retain the Escape’s sporty appearance. would like to take you on a journey, almost a secret journey, because most people do not know of the place we are going to! This is for sun, for sea, for fresh fish, and for exploration into a changing territory.

We often fly through Istanbul, and onwards, with the same airline. After a bus journey, we arrive on the shores of the Sea of Azov, a vast shallow sea, set mystically to the north of the Black Sea which joins together the range of countries from Georgia, to Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania, with Turkey to the south. Our destination city is Berdyansk, home to a fishing port, spectacular local produce markets, new and delicious restaurants, seafront fairs and fun for all of the family; not forgetting the nightlife on the beach fronts and a variety of hugely differing styles of beach which you will not find in any other single resort. Here, the language spoken is predominantly Russian, alongside the similar Ukrainian. Increasingly, English is also used for essential words. The sand beaches, with the temperature over 30 degrees most days, are the places to be. Choose between the open natural bay or the long finger shaped island which stretches 20 kilometres into the sea. Here can be found beach bars, entertainment and seafront restaurants. Back in the town, away from the bustle of the seafront, are the meat, fish, vegetable and general markets. Markets are morning places. Head there at dawn for the best deals and an extravaganza of foods, people, noises and smells. Fish is a local specialty, always brought fresh from the Sea of Azov. One of the most favoured fish is the unusually named Flat Fish. This fish really is flat with two eyes looking upwards; not so surprising when you think of the very shallow sea!

For the long cold winters, historically, fish has to be stored. This is done, and enjoyed all year, by sun-drying the fish with salt, itself dried from the sea on the flat lands. Some bars will serve a small salt-dried fish with every drink. Winter is another local specialty. The temperature drops to minus 20 or colder most winters, with the amazing facility of then being able to walk on the frozen sea! Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s go back to the summer sea, for a new experience, the mud bath! On the northern side of the city the land levels almost to the sea, with inlets of still water just a few centimetres deep. Here develops soft, warm sea mud, a thick dark substance therapeutic for many ailments. Walking in this slippery mud up to knee depth is slow, while more enthusiastic people fully wallow in the mud, which then slowly dries on the skin while minerals are absorbed. People will be seen walking in various styles of mud to eventually rinse in the open sea. Visiting this city is a relief and relaxation away from the fast pace of our lives. Jump into this amazing sea, or take the winter option, and walk on the sea instead!

enom has long been a favourite anti-hero in the Marvel Universe. Fans were very disappointed at the rushed treatment given to the character in the largely panned Spiderman 3 film starring Topher Grace in the role of Eddie Brock. With three writers on this film, one would hold hope they could pull off a gritty and dark film for fans who have patiently waited for Venom to truly hit the big screen. Sadly I must report those fans will have to keep waiting.

Here come the spoilers. Eddie Brock, played to some near perfection by Tom Hardy, is an investigative reporter who has had some issues going after the big guys who he knows are evil and corrupt. On the one hand, he is respected for his willingness to chase the truth, but gets chastised when he can’t reveal sources due to wanting to protect the unethical ways he received the information. In this film’s case, he snooped on his fiancée’s laptop who just happens to be a lawyer working for the legal firm that represents the big tech company Life Foundation. Life Foundation is revealed to be sending rockets to space to retrieve life forms they refer to as symbiotes. These symbiotes cannot survive in our environment without a host to live in. The CEO of Life Foundation, Carlton Drake, played by Riz Ahmed, wants to bridge humans with these symbiotes as a way to live in space as he believes that life on earth is doomed to overpopulation and resource exhaustion. What is missing is any backstory to prove the CEO’s convictions. In another Marvel film Avengers Infinity War, those writers deliver on the villain’s conviction very well in how they portray Thanos, but in this film, it seems to be merely some dialogue and nothing to show us what brought him to this conviction in his life. The risks and measures he takes as a man of science tread upon being a madman and wanting to be a God, as some dialogue actually touches upon that idea. So conviction has been thrown out the window. The villain is nothing more than mad and this is essentially what fails this film. Ton Hardy is just about the only redeemable part of this film showing decent interactions with the symbiote, Venom, and the struggle to get along and protect each other. There are some decent one liners, 60

but let me be honest here, this needed to be an ‘R rated’ film in the same vein as Deadpool. I actually think, what is so misleading from the trailers, is you feel as if you are getting a dark gritty film, but instead the action sequences are just dark (dark as in lighting, and shot at night). CGI cannot make up for poor writing and trying to shove in a lost love story angle while in the midst of world destruction from an alien race is just weak writing. So, how to fix this film? Well, for starters, show Carlton visiting India as a young man and seeing firsthand the effects of overpopulation in the slums. Perhaps he lost family members due to starvation there. This would root his conviction in something he is purposefully passionate about and give him some backstory to show what drove him to create scientific breakthroughs for the world. Once you firm up the villain’s conviction, you can now focus back to Venom. Venom needs to experience more of life through Eddie’s eyes and there simply needs to be more time to grow an appreciation of life on earth. Just the one scene on top of a media news corporation tower is not convincing. Set up a scene where Venom sees crime and the bad sides of people, but then sees good people doing the right thing. He can have great conversations with Eddie to ask why strangers would get involved in helping other strangers. Like when there is a fire in a building, or when people stand up to gang members. Just city lights isn’t enough, in my opinion, to change a symbiote’s mind. This is just lazy writing. The climax and resolution can play out from here once you fix these two major story issues, and with perhaps an ‘R rating’ you can take the action and mood and set a darker tone. That would give the fans of Venom what they want, and not just what the studio wants to play it safe for the sake of wider viewership. Deadpool and Logan both proved beyond a doubt that R rated comic book films can have great success at the box office. Venom could easily have had similar success, but they were too afraid to take the risk and played this chance at a franchise too safe. Safe to a character like Venom, is simply just boring.

THE PORSCHE 911 SPEEDSTER WILL GO INTO PRODUCTION

he concept study, presented during the 70th birthday of the sports car manufacturer, will be produced as a limited special edition: Porsche has decided to start producing the purist Porsche 911 Speedster in the first half of 2019. Exactly 1,948 units of the open-top two-seater will be built. The number reminisces the Porsche 356 “Number 1” that received its operating license on June, 8 back in 1948. In Paris, Porsche presented this year’s second Speedster Concept study. Its Guards Red paintwork is a reference to the 1988 911 Speedster of the G-Model generation. The new cross-spoke 21-inch wheels in cross spoke and the black leather interior create a tasteful and sporty appearance. Dream becomes reality: The driveable 911 Speedster Concept, initially presented on June 8 in 2018 in Zuffenhausen as a “Heritage” version, will go into production in 2019. The car was developed at Porsche Motorsport in Weissach in cooperation with Style Porsche and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. The future 911 Speedster, based on the 991 range, will be the first car to be offered with the new Heritage Design Packages. This exclusive accessory line by Porsche Exclusive allows for an even higher degree of personalization for the 911. In addition to the eye-catching paintwork, 21-inch center lock wheels are another visual highlight of this latest concept study presented in Paris. Their cross-spoke wheel design is similar to that of Porsche racing cars such as the 911 RSR and the GT3 R. The tinted day-time running lights were also inspired by racing. Matching the study’s paintwork, they are kept in red. The two “Talbot”-shaped exterior mirrors as well as the fuel tank cap – centrally positioned on the bonnet – shine in black-chrome and platinum. In contrast to the previously shown “Heritage” version, the interior is using partly perforated black leather upgraded with red highlights. All body components as well as the entire technology of both the 911 Speedster Concept cars are identical. This includes the shortened window frames with their lowered cowl top panels and the smaller side windows as well as the carbon-fibre rear bonnet with the double-bubble cover behind the seats. Both cars come with a lightweight Tonneau cover, fitted by Tenax buttons, instead of a convertible soft top. The concept cars’ body is based on the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. The fenders, as well as the front and rear bonnet are made from lightweight carbon fibre composite while the chassis was taken from the 911 GT3. Furthermore, the GT development department provided the exhaust system with its titanium tailpipes and the drivetrain including the manually operated six-speed gearbox. The same goes for the centrepiece of the limited special edition: The Speedster Concept is powered by a naturally-aspirated flat-six engine developing more than 500 hp and capable of engine speeds up to 9,000 rpm.

he new Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 have been unveiled in occasion of the company’s Capital Market’s Day at the factory in Maranello. These limited-edition special-series cars are the first in a new segment called ‘Icona’ and draw inspiration from the most evocative Ferraris of the 1950s and feature the most advanced sports car technology available today. Aimed at dedicated clients and collectors, the Monza SP1 and SP2 reference the iconic Ferrari racing barchettas of the past, not least the 1948 166 MM, which originally inspired the name ‘barchetta’, and the 750 Monza and 860 Monza. Designed with the sole aim of winning, these uncompromising models helped build the Ferrari legend in the 1950s by delivering numerous victories in the World Sports Car Championship. The Ferrari Monza SP1 was designed as an uncompromising singleseat road car that offers a truly unique experience behind the wheel. The second configuration, the Monza SP2, thanks to the elimination of the tonneau cover and the addition of a second protective screen and a second roll-bar, is instead a two-seater enabling the passenger to share the same driving sensations. The Monza SP1 and SP2 feature a unique design, the best weight-topower ratio of any barchetta, thanks to the extensive use of carbonfibre in construction, and distinctive details, such as head-and taillights, wheels and interior, which further enhance the cars’ exclusivity. Equipped with the most powerful engine Maranello has ever built, a 810 cv V12, they can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.9 seconds. The architecture of the two cars is based on a monolithic form with an aerodynamic wing profile where the complete absence of a roof and windscreen gave the designers the freedom to create unique proportions that would not have been possible on a traditional spider. The result is the feeling of blistering speed normally only experienced by Formula 1 drivers, which derives from the concept of a cockpit carved from the car’s very volume that wraps around the driver. The Ferrari Design Centre has sought to create a very pure design, as though born of a single pencil stroke, to convey an ideal of timeless elegance, minimalist form and refined detail. Visually complex solutions, such as those seen on recent racing cars, have been avoided, giving way to a more understated formal design language. Never has a model expressed such a narrative power, highlighting its appeal as a driver’s car where the link between man and automobile becomes symbiotic. A radical choice was made for the design of the cars’ compact doors which open upwards. Equally important is the all-carbon-fibre one-

piece bonnet-wing assembly which is hinged at the front to showcase the imposing V12 engine once open. As with racing models, the bodyshell of both cars is made entirely from lightweight carbon-fibre. The entire interior is trimmed in the same material with a natural finish to enhance the sporty impact of the design. Weight reduction and the ‘barchetta’ configuration guarantee unique vehicle dynamics: perfectly balanced with no roll whatsoever for pure, uncompromising sports-car handling. Because these are authentic “en plein air” sports cars, one of the greatest challenges in their design was managing the aerodynamic flows inside the cockpit in the absence of a windscreen. The solution was the innovative patented “Virtual Wind Shield” which has been incorporated into the fairing ahead of the instrument panel and the steering wheel. The “Virtual Wind Shield” deviates a part of the air flow to maintain driving comfort. Especially for Monza SP1 and SP2 owners Ferrari, in collaboration with two leading luxury brands, Loro Piana and Berluti, has created elegant gentlemen-driver-inspired apparel and accessories.
