SAUDI’S TOURISM DREAM

Gill Sherry

T

he UAE has long since been a popular tourist attraction in the Middle East. Holiday-makers from all over the world flock to Dubai every year to take advantage of the climate, marvel at the highest building in the world and appreciate the metropolis that has, quite literally, risen from the desert. The capital, Abu Dhabi, is also considered a highly desirable destination. But other GCC countries welcome their fair share of tourists too. Thanks to the Formula 1 Grand Prix, Bahrain can guarantee an influx of visitors from abroad every year. Qatar can also be assured of plenty of tourist income as a result of events such as the IAAF World Athletics Championships (September 2019), World Beach Games (October 2019) and FIFA World Cup (December 2022). Oman is perhaps lagging a little behind but with its beautiful mountainous landscape it can always be sure of a steady string of visitors. Which just leaves Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait, by its own admission, is not the most obvious tourist destination. That said, unlike its GCC neighbours, it doesn’t strive to be on the holiday-makers hit-list. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, has recently enlisted influencers to tempt tourists to its shores. The country has relaxed its immigration rules and, for the first time, tourists will be able to visit Saudi without the need for a visa. In addition, foreign women will not be expected to wear an abaya or a headscarf. This does not, however, give visitors free-rein when it comes to clothing. Women will still be expected to dress modestly and to keep shoulders and knees covered and the rules regarding public displays of affection and the drinking of alcohol will remain unchanged. Ensuring visitors are aware of these cultural expectations will be vital. Currently, Saudi issues around 12 million pilgrimage visas every year

10

OCTOBER 2019

along with 4 million business visas. Officials hope that the number of visitors will increase to 100 million by the year 2030. That’s an ambitious target, particularly when Saudi is still in the spotlight following the death of Jamal Khashoggi. There is still much confusion (and outrage) surrounding the murder of the journalist and with several memorials taking place to mark the first anniversary of his death, it may not be the best time to convince foreigners of Saudi Arabia’s appeal. That said, the crown prince, Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud, is still determined to put Saudi on the tourist map. His vision is for tourism to make up ten per cent of the national economy and to create a million jobs in the tourist industry by 2030. New hotels will be built to meet the predicted demand for half a million more rooms. So how can the influencers persuade people to visit this controversial, sometimes feared, desert kingdom? Typical tourists from countries such as the UK or USA may be tempted by the beautiful sandy beaches, vast desert dunes or sprawling shopping malls but with such attractions already within easy reach in other GCC destinations, why venture into the unknown? People will always crave the unfamiliar, attracted by the mystery associated with new, alien destinations but they also have long memories. With Saudi’s previous distrust of foreigners, the recent arrest of human rights activists and the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, it’s unlikely the number of foreign visitors will increase at the rate anticipated. Despite the assurance that it’s not just the opening of borders but also of hearts and minds, I suspect it will take a lot more than a few staged Instagram pictures to convince foreign visitors of Saudi’s holiday appeal.

2020 Hyundai Sonata, Le Fil Rouge Concept Named Finalists at 2019 International Design Excellence Awards

The All-New 2020 Hyundai Sonata and Le Fil Rouge concept have been recognized as finalists at the 2019 International Design Excellence Awards® (IDEA) by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) for their bold and artful design innovations. IDEA honors design excellence that improves quality of life and pushes conceptual and engineering boundaries in categories such as Automotive and Transportation, Design Strategy, Consumer Technology, Environments and more. “It's a great honor to be named finalists at this prestigious award. Our ultimate goal is to go beyond pure aesthetics, perhaps even beyond design,” said SangYup Lee, the Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center. “Employing Hyundai Motor’s new design philosophy ‘Sensuous Sportiness,’ Hyundai Sonata and the Le Fil Rouge concept reflect our goal by creating vehicles with a heightened emotional value and desirability.” The 2020 Sonata is a celebration of the four-door coupe. It has a distinct tension on the side that harmoniously blends crisply layered body lines and the vehicle’s aerodynamic frame. Concave and convex forms are also carefully orchestrated to highlight its voluptuous fastback character. Another attractive feature is Sonata’s athletic ambience created by a wide, long and layered hood, low-hanging stance and sleek roofline. Boasting a high-powered look, the 2020 Sonata has an average height (including the deck lid) nearly an inch lower than any of its predecessors.’ The ultra-wide rear taillight adds to the Sonata’s sporty character. Le Fil Rouge concept is a reinterpretation of Hyundai’s sporty design spirit that was first introduced in the 1974 Hyundai Coupe Concept Car by famous Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Exemplifying the “sensuous sportiness,” Le Fil Rouge harmonizes the four design elements of proportion, architecture, styling and technology, simultaneously combining aesthetics and function. The concept has enabled Hyundai designers to create proportionally sound, aesthetically appealing and functionally progressive vehicles. A Le Fil Rouge concept car exudes unique proportions forged by a long wheelbase, large wheels and short overhangs. A balanced dashto-axle ratio -- the distance from the dashboard to the front axle - allows a comfortable driving position, while a teardrop roofline completes its fluid, dynamic look.

MR.D0ne’s Game On

Mr.D0ne’s Game On, is an E-Football initiative comprising of an E-Sports Competition with a compelling twist that’s held in 3 different locations across Kuwait in September and October 2019. Abdulaziz Alshehri, who also goes by the alias Mr.D0ne, is a Red Bull E-Sports athlete and the first-ever player from the Middle East to win the FIFA eWorld Cup. The Saudi Arabian player won what was then the FIFA Interactive World Cup Grand Final in Munich, Germany, in 2015 and has ultimately become an icon of the E-Sports world, acquiring the privilege to be in the company of lifelong legends, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Lionel Messi. With smooth and magnetic skills, MrD0ne’s now focusing on developing the profile of E-Football in the Middle East for amateur gaming enthusiasts in the region, starting with MrD0ne’s Game On in Kuwait. The event, which starts September 26 has 5 qualifiers in two different locations in Kuwait. Each qualifier registers teams of two to participate in 16 rounds per qualifier event. Each qualifier acquires winning teams who’ll succeed to the Finals taking place on October 17 at 360 Mall. For the game, the rules are fairly simple, yet full of intensity and suspense: there are 4 players per game, each 2 in a team with one controller per team. The game begins regularly with 2 players; however, the gist is that each team member must tag and switch with their mate within the game when: • A team gets scored on • When a red card is given • At half time Each team is also granted one free switch when the ball is not in play. Teams who end up in a tie would play a Golden Goal round where it’ll lead to a penalty shootout switching players per shoot. Sounds intense huh? To find out more about the event, visit @RedBullKuwait on Instagram and Twitter, and @RedBull on Facebook, or visit www.redbull.com.

Porsche Centre Kuwait welcomes the new Cayenne Coupé

Porsche has extended its Cayenne range with the addition of the Cayenne Coupé – a version that features an all-new body shape, two different roof concepts and impressive performance. Launched at a showcase event held by Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company at Porsche Centre Kuwait, the model shares the same technical attributes as the successful third generation Cayenne, meanwhile its sharpened proportions and dramatically sloping roof line give it a more athletic appearance. Three derivatives are now available for customers to order, this includes; the Cayenne Coupé, Cayenne S Coupé and Cayenne Turbo Coupé. Speaking during the launch event, Peter Green, Group General Manager, Behbehani Motors Company, said: “We are delighted to unveil the Cayenne Coupé for the first time here in Kuwait. A truly worthy addition, this model offers the option of an extra sporty variant within our SUV range. The Cayenne Coupé also reinforces the evolutionary approach Porsche takes when developing its sports cars for the new era. Inheriting the same technical capabilities implemented in the third generation Cayenne, alongside a sharpened design, the Cayenne Coupé is more progressive, athletic, and emotional in its own right. I have no doubt that this impressive model will generate interest amongst current Porsche owners and enthusiasts alike.” Athletic design and style With the exception of the front end, all other body parts of the latest model have been completely redesigned and redeveloped. The significantly steeper roof line makes it more dynamic and positions it as the sportiest-looking model in the segment. Reformed rear doors and wings broaden the shoulders of the Coupé by 18 millimetres, contributing to an overall muscular impression. The rear number plate is integrated into the bumper, making the vehicle appear closer to the ground. The new Cayenne Coupé comes with a 2.16 m2 panoramic fixed glass roof as standard. The 0.92 glazed area gives all passengers an extraordinary sense of space, while the integrated roller blind protects against sun exposure and the cold. A contoured carbon roof is optionally available for the Coupé. The centre seam gives the roof the characteristic look of a sports car, similar to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The carbon roof is available in one of the three lightweight sports packages. These packages also include the Sport Design features and new weight-reduced 22-inch GT Design wheels, seat centres in classic checked fabric, as well as carbon and Alcantara accents in the interior. For the Cayenne Turbo Coupé, the package also includes a sports exhaust system On each Cayenne Coupé model, a fixed roof spoiler is combined with the new adaptive rear spoiler as part of Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA). The spoiler is integrated into the vehicle silhouette and extends by 135 millimetres at speeds of 90 km/h and above, increasing the downforce on the rear axle and thus enhancing driving stability. Turbocharged engines and eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission Benefiting from a generation of powerful and efficient engines initially implemented in third generation Cayenne models, the Coupé versions arrive with increased power through the addition of a Sport Chrono Package fitted as standard.

IN CELEBRATION OF ITS 30TH BIRTHDAY, DKNY CHANNELS THE CREATIVE SPIRIT OF NEW YORK WITH CAMPAIGN AND VIDEO FEATURING HOMETOWN TALENT HALSEY AND THE MARTINEZ BROTHERS

Fall 2019 marks the 30th birthday of dkny and its innovative, genre-defining approach to style — a revolution at its founding and a force three decades in. Yet rather than look to the past, the brand’s seasonal campaign is rooted in the here and now, featuring powerful, graphic portraits of native new yorkers halsey and the martinez brothers, photographed by amy troost and styled by carlos nazario. Having long since accomplished its mission of providing progressive yet pragmatic wardrobe staples for dkny fans and their multi-faceted lives, the brand presents its fall 2019 campaign as a series of quintessential new york stories from respected and influential cultural figures. Self-made and self-assured, halsey and the martinez brothers radiate their cool confidence, irreverent style, and pure talent in each image captured. Together, they embody the creativity that drives young people to the city—a place in which, even today, impossible dreams can be realized. In the campaign, halsey and the martinez brothers sport the most directional pieces from the dkny fall 2019 collection: checked suiting, raw denim and leopard-print athleisure for her; fresh tailoring, classic outerwear and easy essentials for him. With a stark black-and-white aesthetic accented by a bold red logo, the imagery references dkny’s innovative heritage campaigns of the 1990s. “Dkny is the spirit of new york. It’s diversity and drive. It’s hard work and a pinch of destiny. They say if a bee strays too far from its hive, it will die. Dkny keeps my home in my heart, and the magic in my mind. It’s an honor to be a part of their 30th birthday.” —Halsey Halsey’s punk sense of beauty and casual outspokenness have established her as a fearless voice of gen-z, while the recent billboard number-one single “without me” has confirmed her a global powerhouse. She is the epitome of grace under fire commanding the untamed forces of the city and paving a path for positive change, granting halsey her new york stripes. During new york fashion week this september, dkny will host a blockbuster 30th birthday party with a dj set by the martinez brothers and a performance by halsey.

HARKLINIKKEN REAL LIFE STORY

Harklinikken is a specialised Hair Regrowth Clinic that was founded 26 years ago in Denmark when Lars Skjoth, Founder and Head Scientist, made a revolutionary discovery that enables the successful treatment of androgenetic hair loss in both women and men. Since then, Harklinikken’s proven results and reputation for treating hair loss effectively and affordably has led to explosive client growth. Harklinikken is currently present in 27 locations across Europe, the USA and the Middle East. Based out of Dubai, UAE, the Middle East team makes regular visits across the region – including to Kuwait, realising the need for tailored hair loss solutions on a wider scale. Through individual consultations with clients at their bi-monthly ‘pop-ups’, the hair specialists first assess the suitability of the men and women they see, explaining the importance of compliance. The Harklinikken hair regrowth programme includes daily application of a customized Extract to the scalp and the use of specialized shampoos, conditioners, hydrating and styling products designed specifically for the treatment of thinning hair. Since opening in 2012, Harklinikken Dubai has treated numerous clients in the region. One of these, a Middle Eastern businesswoman shares her story.

24

OCTOBER 2019

“I heard about Harklinikken through my mother and aunts who were under treatment. Having faced hair loss and thinning issues for a number of years, I came to accept it as normal, and when I was told by Harklinikken founder Lars Skjoth that it isn’t, and it’s in fact reversible, my curiosity overcame me. My hair turned from being not only thin, but hard to manage, frizzy, and needing endless styling products to tame it – to becoming much fuller, a lot stronger, longer, visibly healthier, and with perfectly formed curls. Seeing these results, and looking back at my ‘before’ pictures have led me to becoming up to 95% compliant, quite impressive considering that by nature I am not generally very routine-focused. When you see such results, you don’t forget where you’ve come from and this drives compliance, which obviously plays a large part in seeing results. People struggle with hair loss for years and years – unnecessarily. I recommend Harklinikken all the time. When I see someone, even strangers, with thinning hair, I don’t hesitate to share my story; I’m proud of what I have achieved and where I am today.”

HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS IN A NUTSHELL Do you have thinning hair? Follow these simple steps: •Book an assessment with a Harklinikken hair specialist. •If you are a candidate and you wish to start, “before” photos are taken. •You will be given detailed instructions how to use the products. The personalised treatment includes: •A customised Extract, to be applied daily at home. •Specialized shampoos, conditioners and styling products. A hair specialist will see you for follow up visits every few months. Initial results will be seen within 3-4 months of consistent use. Average cost for treatment is US$ 140 each month. To learn more about Harklinikken and the team’s next visit to Kuwait, follow @harklinikkenuae, call the team on +971 4 3855570 or WhatsApp +971 54 448 2131 www.harklinikken.ae www.cpmagazine.net

MASERATI GHIBLI A Continuing Evolution

It is barely a year since we published our roadtest report and review of the wonderful Maserati Ghibli, but revisions introduced to this year’s models demanded our further attention. Although already elegantly styled, luxuriously furnished, and equipped with the most advanced automotive engineering and technology, Maserati’s design team in Turin refuses to rest on its laurels but instead works hard to identify even the smallest improvements and innovations which will keep their cars ahead of the competition. 26

OCTOBER 2019

www.cpmagazine.net

27

Hence, for the current model year, they have introduced new colours and alloy wheels, full-grain Pieno Fiore natural leather with new veneers, and a redesigned gearshift lever, all of which provide the Ghibli with a touch of understated refinement. Overall, the Ghibli looks as elegant and sporty, fresh and extraordinary as the day it made its World Premiere in the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. Its design remains a real statement in the premium sedan segment, combining a coupélike philosophy with interior comfort second to none. The exterior styling of the Ghibli underlines the clear distinction between baseline, GranLusso and GranSport trims, while enhancing the visual identity and aerodynamic efficiency of the Maserati sports sedan. The Ghibli GranSport, for example, presents a sportier, more exaggerated design in its front bumper and grille. Its central splitter is embraced by two diagonally arranged wings that virtually support the grille, separating the splitter from the air ducts on both sides. The specific design of the Ghibli GranSport bumper visually accentuates the width of the car, conveying a sense of augmented stability. Ghibli’s design isn’t just about looks but has contributed to a substantial improvement of the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. The drag coefficient of the recently restyled Ghibli is as low as 0.29 - a 7% improvement on the 0.31 value of the original design. One of this year’s upgrades is the inclusion as a standard in both the Ghibli GranLusso and Ghibli GranSport trims of Adaptive Full LED Matrix Headlights developed in collaboration with Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting. Compared to Bi-Xenon headlamps, LED technology offers 20% better visibility, 32% cooler light and headlights with double life expectancy. The Adaptive Full LED Matrix headlights illuminate the road as far as 195 metres ahead – 55 metres further than equivalent Bi-Xenon lights. The Full LED Matrix system includes a front camera that supports the Matrix-adaptive High Beam. This function can create light ‘tunnels’ by deactivating individual LEDs in the relevant zone, ‘cutting out’ the area around the vehicles and allowing Ghibli drivers to keep high beam on, without dazzling oncoming drivers. The adoption of LED technology has subtly revamped the exterior look of the Ghibli, thanks to the restyled Daytime Running Lights (DRL) and a three-blade design inspired by the wing air ducts, 28

a Maserati signature. GranLusso and GranSport models have also been given some new colours and wheels. The Ghibli GranLusso stands out for its enhanced exterior finish. This most elegant version of the Ghibli uses exclusive materials and special features in the finest tradition of Italian craftsmanship. Externally, alongside the Adaptive Full LED Matrix headlights, the trim is distinguished by chrome inserts on the front bumper, a GranLusso badge at the base of the front wing, bodycolour side skirts, black brake calipers and 19-inch Poseidone alloy wheels. Externally, the GranSport also features Adaptive Full LED Matrix headlights and is recognisable for Black Piano inserts on the front bumper, a GranSport badge on the front wing, body-colour side skirts, red brake calipers and, last but not least, 20-inch machine-polished Urano alloy wheels. There is now a choice of eleven body colours in the Ghibli range, two of which are brand new tri-coat colours: the race-inspired Rosso Potente, which has been created to celebrate the heritage of Italian sports cars, and the Blu Nobile with sparkling glass flakes glimmering under the sunlight. There is also a choice of ten alloy wheels in six different designs in sizes ranging from 18 to 21-inch. The 20-inch Teseo, which is available in light and dark finish, is a wheel design that is another stylish new addition to the range. This season has also welcomed the introduction of an optional Nerissimo pack, which brings together black and dark body elements with an extended range of eight specific exterior colours – five of which are brand new - and 20 or 21-inch alloy wheels with dark finish. When the Ghibli entered the premium sedan segment in 2013, it boasted tangibly superior cabin craftsmanship. It also set itself apart with a unique, cockpit-inspired dashboard design that perfectly matched its driver-focused character, without compromising on refinement and sophistication. This comfortable cabin of the Ghibli also blends a state-of-the art infotainment system with tangibly superior materials, like the optional new Pieno Fiore natural leather - and can be further upgraded in the GranLusso and GranSport trims, through which the interior of the Ghibli has been adapted to emphasise

either luxury or sportiness, two essential elements in the DNA of every Maserati. GranSport trim: this sport-oriented interior immediately transmits a sense of passion through an array of exclusive elements like the 12-way power sport leather front seats with integrated anti-whiplash headrests, the sport steering wheel fitted with aluminium gearshift paddles, and the Inox sport pedals. The dashboard’s wood trim is finished in high-gloss Black Piano. GranLusso trim: the luxury-oriented cabin exclusively features Ermenegildo Zegna Silk interiors, with mulberry silk inserts, Radica open-pore wood trim on the dashboard and wood-finished leather steering wheel. The trim also includes a Harman Kardon Premium Sound system, power-adjustable foot pedals and steering wheel, an electric rear sunblind, the Soft Close Doors system and an electrically lockable passenger glove box. In line with a long Maserati tradition, the customer has a wide range of materials from which to choose, and the new Pieno Fiore natural leather is at the top end of the list. The full-grain leather is available in black, red and tan colour, either with comfort or sports seats, each with its own stitching pattern. Premium Leather is used on the upper and lower dashboard and on the armrest. The door panels also stand out for their unique, double-stitching pattern. Pieno Fiore is like no other leather used in the automotive industry for its natural, soft feel and is purposely processed to develop a unique character throughout the years. Maserati also offers two brand new High-Gloss interior veneers for the Ghibli: the Carbon Fibre Twill, which adds exclusivity to the cabin by conveying the idea of a deep 3D look, and the luxurious wooden Rovere Veneer, which features fine stripes with a brushed effect under the glossy top coat. The interior is built around an intuitive, uncluttered and user-friendly driver interface. The instrument panel features large analogue gauges for the tachometer and speedometer, alongside a 7” TFT display. The dashboard is designed around the 8.4” Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC+) display, which features updated graphics and improved Climate Control functions. The Ghibli’s MTC+ infotainment system has a high resolution 8.4” screen with

multi-touch function and is embraced by the central air ducts with cut-off chrome inserts. The head unit bezel bears a Ghibli logo. The MTC+ is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions and gives the user full control of almost all on-board equipment, including the radio and optional navigation system. It also has a standard Bluetooth connection for external sources like mobile phones and Apple devices. The Ghibli is equipped with Air Quality Sensor, a feature that substantially improves the comfort of both the driver and passenger. The system combines an intelligent sensor and a signal analysis system that calculates the external pollution levels and prevents polluted air and toxic gases from entering the cabin. The air flow distribution control, which is fully separated for the driver’s and front passenger’s zones, has been revised and is now more customizable. The center console neatly accommodates a redesigned gearshift lever and a revised button cluster for the driving modes as well as the characteristic double rotary knob, a high-quality forged aluminium component that provides intuitive control of the audio volume and other functions. Ghibli’s redesigned gearshift lever features an intuitive, dual lane shift pattern that provides shorter travel and improved operation. The driver has the option to use the gearbox in either automatic (RND) or manual mode simply by shifting the lever from right to left, while a new ‘P’ button on top sets the transmission in parking mode. With the new gearshift lever, the driving modes cluster on the central console is even more user-friendly. The M button has been eliminated and a Start&Stop “off” button has moved in its place. Ghibli’s transmission caters for all demands, from comfort to fast gear shifting, and from minimised fuel consumption to low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The car also recognizes a variety of conditions, such as uphill or downhill driving, hard braking or driving through a corner, and selects the optimal gear and the most suitable gearshift style accordingly. In Manual Normal mode the system automatically shifts up as the red line approaches, while in Manual Sport, gearshifts are quicker and sharper and the engine can be pushed to the limit without the system intervening. We’re left wondering how they can possibly improve on what’s currently on offer with the Ghibli, but dare say there’s already a lot of head scratching and creative thinking in Turin. www.cpmagazine.net

Maserati Levante Tried. Tested. Delivered.

Maserati’s Design Engineers are so incredibly serious and conscientious about model development, that they subjected their Levante models to a long and rigorous programme of reliability tests across five continents, which included environments where no other Maserati had ever been before. No fewer than thirty-four Levante mule prototypes were driven in an exhaustive testing programme covering millions of kilometres. Extreme hot climate tests were carried out in South Africa and in the deserts of UAE and Morocco, where daytime temperatures soared to as high as 50°C. More recently, about a dozen V8 prototypes were tested in similar conditions. Extreme cold-climate tests were executed in Lapland and in New Zealand, while specific quality checks were carried out from Death Valley in the USA to China to the deserts of UAE. High mileage reliability tests were carried out in Nevada and in Russia. In such regional testing cycles, the cars were put to the test by local drivers.

OCTOBER 2019

Each component of the Maserati Levante was tested for endurance and its ability to satisfy the high standards of the luxury SUV segment. Subsequently, every single car coming off the production line is test driven on the road for a total of 50 kilometres, following the standardised Maserati procedure. The development of the new V8 Levante versions had started as a skunkworks project by the Maserati technical centre in Modena long before the official launch of the SUV project. Engineers built a V8 prototype intended to test the performance limits of the Levante platform. That unbranded V8 “mule” was an inspiration for the top management to proceed with the development of a super Levante built around a Twin Turbo V8 engine. With the development phase officially launched in summer 2016. Maserati’s engineers were given a challenging timeframe and they were immediately focused, in association with their counterparts in Ferrari, on mating the V8 engine with the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system as well as on reaching the high performance targets of the project. In May 2017, Maserati engineers and testers were sent around the world to test a dozen of V8 prototypes in diverse road and extreme weather conditions, from the proving grounds of Balocco, Nardò and Barcelona to the twisty, desert or icy roads of Sierra Nevada, South Africa, Arizona and Lapland. The long-term testing activities covered extreme environments and climates ranging from -35°C to well over 40°C. Even now, before delivery to the customer, each car undergoes an additional 30-minute quality check which includes bodywork and assembly, as well as electrics checks, dynamometer bench testing, and a water test.

Having quickly proven to be a popular model with the motoring public, the Maserati Design Centre in Turin proposed a restyling for the V8 versions, which has also now an option of GranSport trim to offer a sportier, more dynamic appearance. The design concept of the Levante combines coupé lines with interior space for five people and exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. The Maserati of SUVs is instantly recognisable from a distance, thanks to its imposing grille, which was inspired by the sensational Alfieri concept, but also pays homage to historic Maserati cars like the Tipo 60 Birdcage. The silhouette flows along the side of the car from the feline headlights to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, creating a coupé look that is enhanced by frameless doors – a characteristic feature of modern Maserati cars. The muscular shape of the rear haunches underscores the car’s genuinely Italian style. His unmistakable Levante design has reached new levels of sportiness in the new top of the range GTS and Trofeo versions, which have also been a source of inspiration for the restyling of the GranSport exterior. The elegant, sport-oriented restyling is focused on the lower front fascia and the rear bumper. While the exterior of the baseline V6 versions remains the same, the characteristic features of the GranLusso trim are elegant chrome inserts in the front fascia, chrome front/rear skid plates, body colour rear spoiler, black-painted brake calipers, 19inch Zefiro alloy wheels and GranLusso badges on the fenders. The range topping new V8 versions feature a specific front grille with double vertical bars, respectively in specific chrome and black piano finish on GTS and Trofeo. Characteristic features are also the

honeycomb mesh fascia, the body coloured door handles and the red painted brake calipers. The Trofeo easily stands out for its polished racing look featuring ultralight high-gloss carbon fibre exterior elements on the front splitter, the side blades, the side skirt inserts and the rear extractor – as well as for the optional 22-inch Orione forged aluminium wheels, the largest ever fitted in a Maserati. In addition to the newly-introduced V8 models which boast a re-engineered 3.8-litre Twin Turbo V8 powertrain which is currently the most powerful Maserati engine, this season’s revised Levante models feature a number of other features which Maserati has introduced into its ranges: Adaptive full LED Matrix headlights; an updated Nerissimo package; a redesigned gearshift lever with shorter travel and improved operation; Pieno Fiore natural leather which widens choice of exclusive interiors; a retuned, sport-oriented chassis for V8 versions; Standard IVC on all versions; “Corsa” Driving mode with Launch Control for Trofeo; New colour and wheel options; Handling Packs with performance brakes for Levante 350hp and Diesel; GranSport styling inspired by new GTS and Trofeo; and specific exterior features for GranLusso trim.

Aerodynamic efficiency Meticulous virtual environment simulations and extensive tests in the Turin wind tunnel have resulted in a class-leading drag coefficient Cx of 0.31 for the V6 and 0.33 for the new V8 versions that boast wider wheels. During the lengthy aerodynamic testing programme, which included a second phase for the

In Auto Off-Road mode the transmission recognises the different types of terrain, interacts with the ESP and alters its shifting response accordingly. Complementing the technical sophistication and inspired aerodynamic design is an electric Air Shutter in the front grille. Located between the front air vents and the engine’s radiator, the shutter controls the air flow to the engine compartment through the continuous, electronically-controlled Thanks to a remarkable weight / power ratio ranging from 3.9 kg/hp for the Levante GTS to just movement of the blades. 3.6 kg/hp for the Trofeo, performance figures have This provides multiple benefits, both for the engine skyrocketed to the higher end of the SUV class and (by optimising engine temperature) and in terms of are comparable to those of modern-day supercars: efficiency by reducing the car’s aerodynamic drag it takes 4.3 seconds (Europe) and 4.2 seconds and therefore fuel consumption and emissions. For an awesome driving experience, the Maserati Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) function has been incorporated in the Maserati Stability Program control for the first time in the Levante range, while the optional active Advanced Driver Assistance Systems provide Level 2 autonomous driving technology. The new V8 versions have introduced the Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) function as a standard feature in the entire Levante range. Developed in collaboration with Bosch, the IVC is capable to prevent rather than simply correct loss of control, providing enhanced active safety and better dynamics. IVC uses a smart, feed-forward controller that predicts driving situations and adapts the engine speed and brakes accordingly. The system helps drivers maintain control of their vehicle, instead of simply correcting driver mistakes as traditional ESP systems do. In its Levante Trofeo guise, IVC is specifically tuned to decrease understeer tendencies, typical to SUV cars. An understeer / oversteer function inside the Electric Power Steering control cooperates with the IVC system, resulting in a more natural and predictable driving feeling. The system instantly controls the steering torque on the steering wheel providing the driver with optimum feedback, especially in sporty driving. It’s been tried. It’s been tested. And the Maserati Levante delivers by the bucketload.

MICHAEL JABBOUR General Manager - Holiday Inn Kuwait, Salmiya

“EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON”

www.cpmagazine.net

39

Please introduce yourself to our readers: It is indeed a privilege to introduce myself to your magazine readers. I am a Lebanese national, holding Australian citizenship, married to an amazing wife and proud father of one daughter and one son. I am someone who is fully committed to what he does. My love towards different cultures and meeting new people from all around the world are the main reasons why I developed a passion for hospitality in the first place.

Tell us about your education: I received my bachelor degree in Hotel Management and Tourism from Notre Dame University, Beirut.

How and when did you develop an interest in the hospitality field and what was your first job in this field? I took my first job as a part-time bartender where I worked weekends while at university. At first I was a bit hesitant about taking the job, but very soon felt that I fit in and that hospitality was what I wanted to pursue. Taking care of people, mingling with them and putting a smile on their faces was something I saw myself doing every day. I began to realize that I had taken the right decision to major in hospitality, knowing that hospitality was just starting to grow at that time in our country.

How did you get started and how was your experience? I worked as a part-time bartender for about a year before moving to a luxury boutique hotel called Regency Palace Hotel. The plan was to do three months training during the summer but I ended up working with them for three years. In 2000 my journey started with Intercontinental Hotels Group, as part of the opening team of InterContinental Phoenicia Beirut.

Take us through your career journey to date: After moving to InterContinental Phoenicia Beirut in 2000, my next stop was InterContinental Aqaba Resort in Jordan 2007, where I joined as Front Office Manager. In 2011 I moved to Crowne Plaza Dubai where I was promoted to Director of Rooms. My last stop before coming to Kuwait was in Muscat 2015, where I joined the lovely historical InterContinental Muscat Hotel as the Hotel Manager for three remarkable years. Now I am the General Manager of Holiday Inn Kuwait Salmiya. Along the way I have been lucky to experience different brands within IHG, a journey that allowed me to develop and experience 40

OCTOBER 2019

different cultures and different ways of working.

How has been your experience in Kuwait so far? I can genuinely say that the experience so far has been everything that I had expected it to be. I had always pictured my first General Manager role to be an adventure, but of course one that came with bigger responsibilities and commitments. Moving to a new country was always going to make it a bit more challenging. Time was needed to adapt to a new culture, understand the market and its trends, build great rapport with the team, our guests and, of course, a close relationship with our owners. I am proud to say that after eight months I am very comfortable with what the team and I have accomplished. The relationship that exists with the team is built on transparency and trust, where everyone works very hard for one another and is fully committed towards achieving positive outcomes. People in Kuwait are very sociable and have welcomed me with open arms. Since arriving I have had the opportunity to meet and get to know some amazing people from many different fields and industries, allowing me the opportunity to expand my network here in Kuwait. I am also very grateful for the support provided by our owners. Their passion towards Holiday Inn Salmiya and towards hospitality is second to none.

What’s your opinion of the Holiday Inn Salmiya? This property has character and charm. Its reputation speaks for itself so when the opportunity to join Holiday Inn Salmiya arose, I was extremely interested and positive about the possibility of joining a well-established organization. This hotel has always played a role in developing people and making sure that there are only better things to come. Holiday Inn Salmiya is well known for its facilities, services and restaurants and is ideally located in the heart of Salmiya. the negatives as much as you do from the positives. Listen to your peers and once you start climbing the ladder never forget where you started from. Remain humble and lead by example. Be passionate about what you do and come to work because you enjoy what you do and not because you have to. Working in hotels, and with a company like IHG, has certainly made me a better person and what you decide to do in your careers must eventually make you feel the same.

We also have Gardenia private tents in the hotel gardens and Zanzibar Pool Bar where guests can enjoy refreshing cocktails, protein shakes and healthy snacks. I genuinely enjoy dining in all of them and love the variety available, but if I was to choose my favourite I would probably choose Ayam Zaman, not just because of the amazing food, but also the fact that I can enjoy a shisha while watching my favourite football matches.

My days off are fully dedicated to my family. I have a beautiful wife and a son and daughter and I cherish spending whatever free time I have with them.

At work, what puts a smile on your face? Simply seeing the smiles on our guests’ faces. This validates that we are providing unique hospitality and creating memorable experiences. Having dedicated and committed colleagues that work together hand in hand for the best interest of the hotel also creates a wonderful atmosphere and working environment that brings the best out of everyone.

OTAZU

A Dream Museum in a Millenary SeĂąorĂo Art, history and nature in a unique medieval setting.

There are many amazing places to discover throughout Spain. Otazu is definitely one of them. The medieval village is not only still inhabited today, but also showcases a few ancient buildings that attest to the passage of so many centuries, making history always present. 42

OCTOBER 2019

Located just 8 km away from Pamplona, surrounded by the sierra del Perdón and sierra del Sarbil, and naturally delimited with the Arga river, Otazu is home to inspiration. In fact, wherever you look, there is inspiration. The Romanesque Church of San Esteban, from the 12th Century, located in the heart of the Señorío de Otazu and proof of the passage of the pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela, was the first stone of this natural amphitheater. Currently you can visit the pigeon tower from the 14th Century, one of the many medieval defense towers there used to be in the sierra de Etxauri and Pamplona. The ancient Palace and Señorío de Otazu, belonged in its origins to the noble lineage of the Yániz and then passed to the Ezpeleta, and was also in the hands of the Marquis de Góngora. Today it’s home to Guillermo Penso’s family and friends. Penso, CEO of Bodega Otazu and patrón of the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, established ‘Fundación Otazu’ in 2016 aiming to promote and manage art activities such as fellowships and artist’s residencies, from this millenary Señorío. Three decades earlier, his family bought this beautiful location linked to the wine industry since the 12th Century. The old cellar, a magnificient building dating back from 1840, is now turned into a musem, hosting important pieces from Spanish artists such as Manolo Valdés, José Guerrero or Baltasar Lobo, combined with contemporary masterworks of artists such as Liam Gillick or Leandro Erlich. But the collection is also spred throughout the landscape. There is a sculpture park which communicates in harmony with nature. All of the Foundation's activities are aimed to reinforce the interest of the family, giving back to society through knowledge, art and education. Establishing the Foundation within the property of the winery also helps to understand the dialogue between nature, art and industry, all three aspects basic in human inspiration throughout history. The art collection is made from artists that create art with the purpose of communicating and creating knowledge and new ways of seeing reality and the world through metaphor, metonym, abstraction, imitation or action.

Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Lulwa. I was born and raised in Kuwait. I’m a freelance life coach. Tell us about your education. I graduated from College of Basic Education majoring in English. I worked as a teacher for four years and then continued my work for four more years in the educational field. What made you decide to become a life coach? At the beginning, it wasn’t a planned decision in my life, but more of a coincidence in a family gathering. I remember sitting with my family and hearing them talk about life coaching. They were debating the purpose of it with contrasting ideas. I was both confused and curious to the point that I needed to know what life coaching was about. So I started my own research and figured out that I share the characteristics of a life coach. That was the start of it. What kind of education do you think is instrumental to becoming a life coach? There are different life coaching schools, so everyone can decide which school suits them. I always believe that knowledge is the key – knowledge, knowledge, knowledge! Are there required licenses that one must have to enter this field? Yes, there are different types of licenses and certification. What challenges did you face when you first started? Since I’m in a society where people don’t usually talk about their personal lives, my first challenge was how to build a trustworthy relationship with my clients. What are the biggest misconceptions about life coaching? Some people don’t differentiate between a life coach and a therapist. A therapist treats psychological problems and deals with the past. A life coach, on the other hand, helps people to reach their goals, make decisions and discover themselves for a better life. What’s the first thing you say to a new client? I’m your stranger friend! Tell us about your approach to life coaching and your specialist area? My main goal is to build a trustworthy relationship as a friend with my clients. Also, I welcome them through open doors and listen to them before following up with their problems and goals inside and outside the session. I always give them the support they need. 46

OCTOBER 2019

What are some of the tools that you use during your coaching sessions? Support, encouragement, deep listening, good communication and positivity. What is the best thing you have ever heard from a client? One client told me that I’m the first person they have trusted in seven years. What do you love the most about your profession? Helping people. What’s been the most important moment in your career so far? My first client. What advice would you give about finding the right life coach? The most important thing is to find someone you feel comfortable talking with. What’s next for Lulwah? What are you currently working on? I look forward to having my own life coaching company and obtaining more specialized licenses and certification. Do you have any amazing stories of life coaching success that you can share with us? I would love to share some stories with you but I’m not allowed to do so without the client’s permission. What are some of your hobbies? I always enjoy visiting relaxing places, such as hotels. What is your work/life balance mantra? Do what you are passionate about. What would you advise people who suffer from stress? There are many different ways to avoid stress such as sport and meditation. Also, avoid toxic relationships and, most importantly, find the main cause of the stress and work on relieving it. Do you have a final piece of advice or insight for our readers? Do not hesitate to see a life coach. Your message for us at CP Magazine: I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my story and talk about life coaching with you.

LOUIS VUITTON GOES BACK TO A GOLDEN AGE Designer Nicolas Ghesquière puts a modern twist on the Belle Époque

Marking the end of a long fashion month, the last word and finale of Spring/Summer 2020 was the Louis Vuitton golden age collection from designer, Nicolas Ghesquière. Celine went ultra-commercial retro for its SS20 runway collection, Hermès presented polished modern work wear and Dior showcased floral femininity. But Ghesquière’s inspiration took us to an uplifting cocktail of Belle Époque opulence, 1970s flair and striking Instagram-friendly handbags. He took us to the period between the end of the 19th century and the First World War which saw the Eiffel Tower built in Paris, described as ‘a time of enthusiasm and significant change and nostalgia for a time we can only dream about.’ 48

Paris Fashion Week The best looks from Louis Vuitton SS2020 and tips on how to wear them

A refined, structured silhouette and empowering twist on the classic suit, the gilet is a come-back icon perfect for pairing under your suit to give it that classic modern twist.

The vibrancy and dynamism of one of the most beautiful historical eras in France was epitomized in the art-deco-like style of this colourful, geometricmotif skirt and shoes reminiscent of 19th century Parisian women’s style. You can replace the skirt with a denim or capri.

A classic Gibson top, this immaculate style is perhaps the most true to Ghesquiere’s inspiration at this season’s Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2020 presentation. Pair the top and skirt with heels instead to underscore the feminine silhouette for a softer version of a daytime power suit.

The Louvre became a portal to the 18th century, where we got aristocratic vibes mixed with modern sporty athleisure. Creative Director Ghesquière said. “It’s about how some pieces are considered costume, and it was interesting to explore a way of considering them again in a wardrobe that I love. Let’s call it ‘anachronism with a hint of romanticism’.”

WHAT DOES PUFFINESS MEAN? Sana Mrad

Swelling of the eye, also referred to as periorbital puffiness, refers to the presence of excess fluid (edema) in the connective tissues around the eye, most commonly the eyelids. The following tips can help reduce or eliminate under-eye bags: lUse a cool compress - wet a clean washcloth with cool water. lCut down on fluids before bedtime and reduce salt in your diet. lDon't smoke. lGet enough sleep. lSleep with your head slightly raised. lReduce allergy symptoms.

Medications If you think the swelling under your eyes is caused by an allergy, ask your doctor about prescription allergy medications.

Therapies Various wrinkle treatments are used to improve the appearance of puffiness under the eyes. These include laser resurfacing and/or chemical peels and fillers, which may improve skin tone, tighten the skin and rejuvenate the look of bags under the eyes.

What foods cause puffy eyes? lTomatoes lSalt lDairy lAlcohol lCaffeine

and carbonated drinks

Why is my face so puffy in the morning? You may occasionally wake up with a swollen, puffy face. This could happen as a result of pressure being placed on your face while sleeping. However, a swollen, puffy face can also arise from a facial injury or indicate an underlying medical condition. In most cases, a medical professional should treat facial swelling.

Eyelid surgery

Depending on what's causing bags under the eyes, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may be a treatment option. During blepharoplasty (Blef-uh-roe-plas-tee), the surgeon removes excess fat through an incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid or inside the lower lid, then rejoins the skin with tiny dissolving stitches. The procedure is usually done as an outpatient procedure. In addition to correcting under-eye bags, blepharoplasty can also repair: lBaggy or puffy upper eyelids. lExcess skin of the upper eyelid that interferes with your vision.

COURBET

LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS FOR A GREEN GENERATION

Manuel Mallen portrait photo: Dmitry_Kostyukov

“A few years ago, there were no true alternatives to the mined diamond. Today we have the choice and have no longer any reason to rummage through Earth for diamonds when science and technology make it posible to produce the exact same diamond.” `Manuel Mallen, CEO of Courbet.

56

OCTOBER 2019

During past years a new diamond emerges to disrupt an industry known to be conservative. Rather than being born in the depths of the earth, this diamond emanates from strong ethics, deeply held values and from the most brilliant minds of Silicon Valley. The result is an opportunity for a more conscious choice, an ethical and ecological alternative to traditional jewelery. French jewelry brand Courbet, founded by Manuel Mallen and Marie-Ann Wachtmeister in 2018, aims to offer the next generation of modern, ethical, sustainable and creative jewelry that respects the longheld Place Vendôme traditions of the art of luxury jewelry. As for the name, Courbet was inspired by Place Vendôme itself. Courbet was the French rebel painter of nature and women, world famous for his painting L’Origine du Monde. What’s more symbolic of Courbet than dismantling the Napoleonic pillar at the center of Place Vendôme as a testament to his desire for world peace and change? The process to produce Courbet’s lab-grown diamonds consists of “reproducing what nature did on its own billions of years ago. Note that growing diamonds implies the same level of uncertainly, when it comes to the quality of your diamond, that exists when you mine a diamond,” says Manuel Mallen. Courbet’s jewelry is sustainable and ethical. The diamonds used in the jewelry have minimal impact on the environment. Known as ‘laboratory created diamonds’ they evolve in a controlled environment with full transparency, guaranteeing their ethical value. Courbet do not produce diamonds, they source them in laboratories. Since the production of diamonds costs so much energy, they have decided to work exclusively with labs that work on renewable energy. Therefore, their laboratory in Russia works on hydraulic energy and the one they work with in the US relies on solar energy. For Mallen, “the goal is to start sourcing diamonds directly in France, which is why we’ve been working with scientists to develop this initiative… keep an eye out for what the future holds.” Each decision at the heart of Courbet is guided meticulously by the secritical values held dearly by the founders of the firm and their team. Even the jewelry boxes are made of recycled leather. Marie-Ann Wachtmeister, Co-founder and Artistic Director, designs lasting jewelry. They wanted to create a timeless design that isn’t show-off or based on trends. MarieAnn likes her creations to have a little twist, she redefines, in a way, what classic means. This implies that some of the pieces, like the rings, turn into earrings. “There is a small quantity of diamonds left to mine on the planet and the practice of extracting them is bound to disappear. There is an increasing demand for diamonds and for a more sustainable way to consume. We offer an ecological and sustainable

alternative to the old way of doing jewelry,” confirms Manuel Mallen. The CEO of Courbet continues, “lab-grown diamonds and mined diamonds are the same thing. Saying otherwise equals to saying an ice-cube is not real because it comes from your freezer and not from the peak of a mountain. Both diamonds have the exact same characteristics except ours come from above the ground when others come from below the ground. Even more so, you will get the same certificate for a lab-grown diamond and for a mined diamond.” So today, Courbet launches a new generation of jewelry, one that believes true beauty cannot exist without goodness. It is the heart and art of the modern jewelry movement that they are asking the world to join.

MESSENGERS: WHO WE LISTEN

AGENT RUNNING IN THE FIELD by John le Carré

We live in a world where proven facts and verifiable data are freely and widely available. Why, then, are self-confident ignoramuses so often believed over thoughtful experts? And why do seemingly irrelevant details such as a person's appearance or financial status influence whether or not we trust what they are saying, regardless of their wisdom or foolishness? Stephen Martin and Joseph Marks compellingly explain how in our uncertain and ambiguous world, the messenger is increasingly the message. We frequently fail, they argue, to separate the idea being communicated from the person conveying it, explaining why the status or connectedness of the messenger has become more important than the message itself.

Set in London in 2018, Agent Running in the Field follows a twenty-six year old solitary figure who, in a desperate attempt to resist the political turbulence swirling around him, makes connections that will take him down a dangerous path. In his plot and characterization le Carré is as thrilling as ever and in the way he writes about our times he proves himself, once again, to be the greatest chronicler of our age.

THE FOUNTAINS OF SILENCE by Ruta Sepetys

THE INFINITE GAME

Madrid, 1957. Under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain is hiding a dark secret. Meanwhile, tourists and foreign businessmen flood into Spain under the welcoming guise of sunshine and wine. Among them is eighteen-year-old Daniel Matheson, the son of a Texas oil tycoon, who arrives in Madrid with his parents hoping to connect with the country of his mother's birth through the lens of his camera. Photography and fate introduce him to Ana, whose family's interweaving obstacles reveal the lingering grasp of the Spanish Civil War as well as chilling definitions of fortune and fear. Daniel's photographs leave him with uncomfortable questions amidst shadows of danger. He is backed into a corner of decisions to protect those he loves. Lives and hearts collide, revealing an incredibly dark side to the sunny Spanish city.

In finite games, like football or chess, the players are known, the rules are fixed, and the endpoint is clear. The winners and losers are easily identified. In infinite games, like business or politics or life itself, the players come and go, the rules are changeable, and there is no defined endpoint. There are no winners or losers in an infinite game; there is only ahead and behind. The more I started to understand the difference between finite and infinite games, the more I began to see infinite games all around us. I started to see that many of the struggles that organizations face exist simply because their leaders were playing with a finite mindset in an infinite game. These organizations tend to lag behind in innovation, discretionary effort, morale and ultimately performance.

FIND ME

by Elton John

TO, WHO WE DON'T, AND WHY by Stephen Martin

by André Aciman

Christened Reginald Dwight, he was a shy boy with Buddy Holly glasses who grew up in the London suburb of Pinner and dreamed of becoming a pop star. By the age of twenty-three, he was on his first tour of America, facing an astonished audience in his tight silver hotpants, bare legs and a T-shirt with ROCK AND ROLL emblazoned across it in sequins. Elton John had arrived and the music world would never be the same again. His life has been full of drama, from the early rejection of his work with song-writing partner Bernie Taupin to spinning out of control as a chart-topping superstar; from half-heartedly trying to drown himself in his LA swimming pool to disco-dancing with the Queen; from friendships with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and George Michael to setting up his AIDS Foundation. All the while, Elton was hiding a drug addiction that would grip him for over a decade.

GOOD HABITS, BAD HABITS:

THE SCIENCE OF MAKING POSITIVE CHANGES THAT STICK by Wendy Wood We spend a shocking 43 percent of our day doing things without thinking about them. That means that almost half of our actions aren't conscious choices but the result of our non-conscious mind nudging our body to act along learned behaviors. How we respond to the people around us; the way we conduct ourselves in a meeting; what we buy; when and how we exercise, eat, and drink a truly remarkable number of things we do every day, regardless of their complexity, operate outside of our awareness. We do them automatically. We do them by habit. And yet, whenever we want to change something about ourselves, we rely on willpower. We keep turning to our conscious selves, hoping that our determination and intention will be enough to effect positive change. And that is why almost all of us fail.

In this spellbinding exploration of the varieties of love, the author of the worldwide bestseller Call Me by Your Name revisits its complex and beguiling characters decades after their first meeting. No novel in recent memory has spoken more movingly to contemporary readers about the nature of love than André Aciman’s haunting Call Me by Your Name. First published in 2007, it was hailed as “a love letter, an invocation . . . an exceptionally beautiful book” (Stacey D’Erasmo, The New York Times Book Review). Nearly three quarters of a million copies have been sold, and the book became a much-loved, Academy Award–winning film starring Timothée Chalamet as the young Elio and Armie Hammer as Oliver, the graduate student with whom he falls in love.

DEAR GIRLS: INTIMATE TALES, UNTOLD SECRETS, AND ADVICE FOR LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE by Ali Wong In her hit Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra, an eight-month pregnant Ali Wong resonated so heavily that she became a popular Halloween costume. Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women, and why you never see new mom comics on stage but you sure see plenty of new dads. The sharp insights and humor are even more personal in this completely original collection. She shares the wisdom she's learned from a life in comedy and reveals stories from her life off stage, including the brutal singles life in New York (i.e. the inevitable confrontation with erectile dysfunction), reconnecting with her roots (and drinking snake blood) in Vietnam, tales of being a wild child growing up in San Francisco, and parenting war stories.

Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren

Sam Brandis was Tate Jones’s first: Her first love. Her first everything. Including her first heartbreak.

Christina Lauren

During a whirlwind two-week vacation abroad, Sam and Tate fell for each other in only the way that first loves do: sharing all of their hopes, dreams, and deepest secrets along the way. Sam was the first, and only, person that Tate—the long-lost daughter of one of the world’s biggest film stars—ever revealed her identity to. So when it became clear her trust was misplaced, her world shattered for good. Fourteen years later, Tate, now an up-and-coming actress, only thinks about her first love every once in a blue moon. When she steps onto the set of her first big break, he’s the last person she expects to see. Yet here Sam is, the same charming, confident man she knew, but even more alluring than she remembered. Forced to confront the man who betrayed her, Tate must ask herself if it’s possible to do the wrong thing for the right reason… and whether “once in a lifetime” can come around twice. With Christina Lauren’s signature “beautifully written and remarkably compelling” (Sarah J. Maas, New York Times bestselling author) prose and perfect for fans of Emily Giffin and Jennifer Weiner, Twice in a Blue Moon is an unforgettable and moving novel of young love and second chances.

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Directed by Adrian Grunberg | Written by Dan Gordon, Matthew Cirulnick & Sylvester Stallone

R

ambo has long been an action hero staple in cinemas and each outing has seen the character of John Rambo take on one form of injustice or another. This film tried hard to give the look and feel of the successful Logan (2017). However, with subpar acting and some of the worst dialogue ever written this film is just painful to watch.

Here come the spoilers.

John Rambo is living out his life on the horse ranch once owned by his deceased father. John runs it with a woman and her grand-daughter. Without much build-up we are given a few scenes to show minimal endearment between Rambo and his unofficial adopted daughter. She turns 18 and is soon to leave for college but reveals her desire to meet her recently found father in Mexico so she can ask him why he wasn’t a part of her life. Against Rambo’s protests she goes anyway. Somewhat predictably, she is kidnapped and forced into prostitution. Rambo goes across the border to track her down and crosses paths with the cartel brothers who run things in that area. They beat up Rambo and decide to crank up the girl’s suffering. Rambo - who was left for dead - is rescued by a woman who turns out to be an investigative reporter. The fact she is a reporter has no real purpose in the film (more on that later). A few days later, Rambo locates the girl’s brothel and goes on a rampage to find her before leaving with her and heading back home. Along the way, she succumbs to the torture and drugs and dies, seemingly from an overdose. Rambo goes back and kills some more people but goes home to prepare one final stand against the rest of the

cartel gang. It all seems too simple and rushed. There is very little character development in this film but this is something that could be fixed. Sylvester Stallone is notorious for his montages in film. We get one montage of him preparing for the final battle but the one needed was the one showing the ten years of him raising this girl and the bond that existed between them. Show us the girl drawing the horse on the tunnel wall. Show us him discovering hope in his life. Show this so when she dies in his arms it matters more. Show vulnerability. That is what is missing from this film. Show the reporter’s vulnerability as a person who writes the news but now is too scared to publish it because of fear of retaliation from the cartel. Have her write anonymous news stories about the old man taking on the cartel brothers by himself. Draw out these scenes with more targeted attacks in Mexico to draw out the brothers and disrupt their various illegal operations. Have Rambo free the women in the brothel, destroy a drug factory and rescue a group of people from execution. These are all things that could have elevated the action and given the reporter’s character something to write about, expose the cartels and give her a way to fight against them with words that inspire the people of Mexico to stand up and fight. That is what a Rambo movie should be - fighting against the wrong and injustice in the world. Sadly the writers missed the mark here. With just one, maybe two montages, the film would be tremendously improved and would give two characters some depth and real purpose beyond just simple revenge. OCTOBER 2019

Ferrari has unveiled the F8 Spider, the new generation drop-top sports car equipped with the most successful midrear-mounted V8 in history. The Ferrari F8 Spider was designed in parallel with the F8 Tributo berlinetta and features the Prancing Horse’s compact and efficient RHT (Retractable Hard Top) which influences the lines of a model that leads its category. The F8 Spider is the latest addition to an exclusive and prestigious bloodline of open-top V8 cars begun with the 308 GTS in 1977. It is less extreme than the 488 Pista Spider, but sportier than the 488 Spider which it replaces in the range. Consequently, the F8 Spider sets a new benchmark for the “en plein air” sports car in terms of usable performance and exceptional handling, providing an incredibly rewarding driving experience. In fact, it excels in merging handling dynamics with surprising in-car comfort. This Ferrari spider thus combines the characteristics of the most lauded 8-cylinder engine in history with unparalleled driving pleasure.

The V8 has raised the performance bar to unprecedented new heights, not only for turbo engines but power units of all types. The engine is a development of the V8 that won the “International Engine of the Year Award” for four consecutive years (2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019) and that was also selected as the best engine of the last two decades. An incredible feat unmatched in the history of the Awards. The F8 Spider’s greatest achievement is the fact that it unleashes its power instantaneously with zero turbo lag, whilst retaining this V8’s unique and very special soundtrack. This astonishing performance and the car’s disarmingly effortless handling were made possible by integrating a series of innovative, track-derived aero solutions into its design. The mission of every new model produced by Maranello is to introduce new design features and outperform its predecessors on all fronts. The challenge the engineers and designers always face is to push their own creative limits and the boundaries of technology by introducing new, leading-edge solutions and setting new levels of excellence. This is something they have done to brilliant effect once again with this new model. The F8 Spider replaces the 488 Spider and improves on all aspects of its specifications: aside from the fact that its engine delivers an extra 50 cv, the new Ferrari is 20 kg lighter than its predecessor. It weighs just 20 kg more than the more extreme 488 Pista Spider. The F8 Spider is significantly more aerodynamically efficient, too and features the new 6.1 version of the Side Slip Angle Control system.

ENGINE In the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rear-mounted in a twoseater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of this architecture to perfection for over four decades as it optimally balances weight for perfect handling dynamics. The V8’s technical specifications are truly exceptional. The 3902 cc unit unleashes 720 cv at 8,000 rpm and also has an impressive specific power output of 185 cv/l. Its maximum torque is now higher at all engine speeds, peaking at 770 Nm at 3,250 rpm. Today, Ferrari V8s incorporate solutions so refined they are effectively masterpieces of engineering. This power unit in particular further enhances the typical traits of all Maranello engines with smoothly progressive, limitless acceleration and zero turbo lag, combined with a unique soundtrack courtesy of a new exhaust system. The new car offers drivers pure emotions. Instantaneously accessible power is matched by exceptional handling thanks to advanced vehicle dynamics solutions. These include a new version of the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE+) which can now be activated in the manettino’s RACE position, a move designed to make performance on the limit easier to reach and control. To achieve the 50 cv increase in power compared to the 488 Spider, the new intake line is derived directly from the 488 Challenge. In the F8 Spider, the air intakes have been moved from the flanks to the rear where they are located on either side of the blown spoiler and are directly connected to the intake plenums. This drastically reduces losses and ensures greater air flow to the engine, thereby increasing the power. The air flow also benefits from increased dynamic pressure created by the shape of the rear spoiler.

Adaptive Performance Launch analyses grip as the car accelerates and then uses electronic controls to optimise the torque delivered to suit the road’s grip level, reducing wheel slip to a minimum which, in turn, maximises acceleration. The rev limiter’s “Wall Effect” strategy is another leap forward in terms of extreme engine performance. Rather than gradually limiting the revs towards the limit, it cuts off right at the 8,000 rpm red-line, maximising the amount of power available in power-on dynamic driving situations and consequently improving lap times. Adopted once again on this model is the hugely successful Ferrari Variable Torque Management strategy for all gears. To adapt it to the car’s extreme sporty spirit, all of the torque curves were redesigned to deliver a feeling of consistently smooth, powerful acceleration all the way to the red line. Maximum torque is 10 Nm higher than on the 488 Spider and is available even at lower engine speeds. The F8 Spider’s engine also inherits highly efficient weight-reduction solutions from the 488 Pista which have cut the power unit’s weight by 18 kg compared to that of the 488 Spider. Reducing the weight of rotating and non-static masses, such as the titanium con-rods, crankshaft and flywheel, allows engine speed to rise very rapidly, so much so that the driver can see the rev counter needle flying, particularly in rapid transitions, such as gear shifting and scorching low-gear acceleration, making the car feel even sportier still. These reductions in the weight of the rotating masses yield a 17% reduction in inertia. Inconel exhaust manifolds derived from the 488 Challenge alone contribute 9.7 kg to the lighter engine weight. The exhaust layout has been extensively modified across the board from the turbos to the tail pipes to produce a sound absolutely unique to this particular car. The result is an unmistakable engine timbre that is superior in terms of both the intensity and quality of the sound. The exhaust line also features a new Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) to comply with new homologation requirements.

DESIGN Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Spider continues the direction embarked upon with the F8 Tributo which acted as a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency. When designing a spider, the choice of the top will always play a fundamental role in the car’s overall look. For some years now, Ferrari has been adopting a hard top because of the comfort it provides. As a result, the design of the F8 Spider’s lines was crafted around its RHT (Retractable Hard Top). The key to the whole design was the shifting of the separation line between the car’s body and the roof from its conventional position at the belt-line (occupant shoulder level) to above the B-pillar. The top itself is thus more compact and two-dimensional, with the result that it can be divided into two parts and stowed on top of the engine. The RHT takes just 14 seconds to deploy or retract and can be closed or opened while the car is on the move up to 45 km/h.

EXTERIOR The goal the Ferrari Styling Centre set with the F8 Spider was to design a stylistic tribute

also incorporates the optional 7” touchscreen passenger-side display and the dash is completed by the classic instrument cluster with its central rev-counter. The tunnel is clearly separated from the dash and set beneath it, once again to enhance the sensation of lightness that the car’s interior exudes. It features a new bridge, a prominent sculptural creation that seems to float and thus further streamlines the cabin.

AERODYNAMICS The F8 Spider has taken state-of-the-art aerodynamic solutions and innovations from Ferrari’s GT and Challenge racing experience, and moulded them into the production mid-rear-engined drop-top that makes the highest level of performance accessible to drivers of all abilities. In the F8 Spider, the position of the front radiators - which, unlike the 488 Spider, are rearward-angled - is beneficial in cooling terms but simultaneously shrinks the underbody surface area that can be used to generate downforce. Thus the geometry of the channels used to dissipate hot air had to be redesigned to ensure that maximum downforce was generated whilst cutting drag thanks to the positive interaction between the flows exiting the radiator and the front wheels. The result is a 10% improvement in the car’s overall efficiency compared to the 488 Spider.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS Overall performance levels are significantly higher than those of the 488 Spider, thanks to the increase in power, weight reduction and improved aerodynamic coefficient. That performance is also now accessible to a larger number of drivers thanks to vehicle dynamics systems that make driving on the limit an easier and more confidenceinspiring experience. These include a steering wheel with a smaller-diameter rim and the introduction of the new Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer Plus into the integrated SSC concept, now in 6.1 guise. To achieve their goal of making the car’s impressive performance easy to access and control, Ferrari’s engineers worked on integrating engine and aerodynamics performance with the latest iteration of the vehicle dynamics control systems. The Side Slip Control system, which improves drivers’ control on the limit for an even more engaging behind the wheel, has been further evolved. The transition from version 6.0 to 6.1 reflects the fact that the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer system (FDE+) now also activates in the Race position of the manettino. The FDE is a lateral dynamics control system that uses Ferrari software to adjust the brake pressure at the callipers. It debuted on the 488 Pista and was later adopted on the 488 Pista Spider. The F8 Tributo then featured the new FDE+ version with extended functionality which is now also being used on the F8 Spider. The control system, which is operational through and exiting corners (but not under braking), now also extends to low grip conditions and to the Race setting of the manettino. to the Ferrari V8 engine, by evolving the contents of the F8 Tributo and taking inspiration from the most iconic mid-rear-engined V8 sports cars in Ferrari history. The result is a car with a strong personality of its own through an even sportier design clearly inspired by the car’s advanced aerodynamics. The front view of the car is characterised by the S-Duct around which the entire front end has been redesigned to highlight the extensive aerodynamic modifications made to this area of the car. The clearest example is new, more compact, horizontal LED headlights. The rear spoiler has been entirely redesigned. It is now larger and wraps around the tail lights, visually lowering the car’s centre of gravity and allowing a return to the classic twin light cluster and body-coloured tail, another styling cue from the early 8-cylinder berlinettas like the very first in the legendary series, the 308 GTB. The treatment of the engine cover is one of the F8 Spider’s most distinctive characteristics. The manta-like look of the cover is created by a central spine that starts from the rear screen and disappears under the wing of the blown spoiler, following the air flows themselves. The two wings that emerge from the central volume meld harmoniously with the bodywork, lending a sense of visual continuity from all angles. These wing elements are suspended creating an air vent below them which helps improve dissipation of the heat coming off the engine. The three sculpted strakes on the side elements of the engine cover also make their own contribution to this, in addition to referencing the iconic styling of the rear screen of the coupé version. The strakes are finished in black to reduce weight low and to lend a sense of visual clarity to the design. The crests that emerge from the prominent volumes of the tonneau cover fins flow sinuously rearwards and into the spoiler in an interpretation of the F1 “swan neck” (the pillars supporting the rear wings) which, in turn, enhances the already-powerfully sporty personality of the car.

7 YEARS MAINTENANCE Ferrari’s unparalleled quality standards and increasing focus on client service underpin the extended seven-year maintenance programme offered with the F8 Spider. Available across the entire Ferrari range, the programme covers all regular maintenance for the first seven years of the car’s life. This scheduled maintenance is an exclusive service that allows clients the certainty that their car is being kept at peak performance and safety over the years. This very special service is also available to owners buying pre-owned Ferraris. Regular maintenance (at intervals of either 20,000 km or once a year with no mileage restrictions), original spares and meticulous checks by staff trained directly at the Ferrari Training Centre in Maranello using the most modern diagnostic tools are just some of the advantages of the Genuine Maintenance Programme. The service is available on all markets worldwide and from all Dealerships in the Official Dealership Network. The Genuine Maintenance programme further extends the range of after-sales services offered by Ferrari to satisfy clients wishing to preserve the performance and excellence that are the signatures of all cars built at the factory in Maranello which has always been synonymous with leading-edge technology and sportiness.

COCKPIT The F8 Spider’s cockpit retains the classic, driver-oriented look typical of Ferrari’s midrear-engined berlinettas. A concept that creates a symbiotic relationship between driver and car, very much as happens in F1, with all controls mounted on the new generation steering wheel. The sporty seats are also new. The dash incorporates an aluminium sail panel supporting the central satellite and continuing into the dash itself. Also to create a sense of visual lightness, a sliver of carbon fibre divides the upper and lower parts, streamlining the whole look. This section
