AMERICAN DIRT By Jeanine Cummings A Book Review by Gill Sherry

10

OCTOBER 2020

A

lthough aware of the plight of refugees, my knowledge is restricted to what I read in the papers or see on the television: snapshots of misery in filthy camps, overcrowded boats or ill-equipped, foreign hospitals. I was keen, therefore, to read Jeanine Cummings’ novel, American Dirt. It tells the story of a mother and son fleeing their home country in fear for their lives and attempting to cross the US-Mexico border. Not only is it politically relevant, it aids the understanding of the danger, hardship and prejudice faced by those forced to abandon their homes to begin a life-changing journey of desperation. Having witnessed the murder of sixteen members of her family in a revenge massacre, Lydia escapes Acapulco with eight-year-old Luca and embarks on a perilous journey to the US. It’s a harrowing read, the author’s vivid descriptions bringing the characters to life and, in doing so, drawing the reader in. I felt as though I was sitting beside Lydia on the roof of ‘la bestia’ (the northern bound train known as ‘the beast’). I felt the pain of Luca’s blister as he walked the endless Sonoran Desert. I felt their joint relief as they caught their first glimpse of US soil, believing they’d finally escaped the long arm of the cartel and were, finally, free from danger. If it’s only a better life you seek, seek it elsewhere...This path is only for people who have no choice, no other option, only violence and misery behind you. And your journey will grow even more treacherous from here. Everything is working against you. This quote sums up their predicament, highlighting the impossible position Lydia and Luca find themselves in. The reader’s experience is enhanced by the individual stories of their fellow migrants, each one entirely shocking but completely believable. I was rooting for them all, urging them on through each setback and over every obstacle.

Publisher: Tinder Press Published: January 2020

Cummings has researched her subject well (she admits to five years’ worth) and examines the survival instinct of those forced to endure untold hardship whilst, at the same time, considering culture and humanity. American Dirt may only shine the spotlight on one fictional family but it raises awareness of refugees worldwide. It’s a gripping read designed to shock. It’s as powerful as it is beautiful. The author has managed to capture the horror of an ongoing, global problem with strong characters, provocative prose and in-depth knowledge of her subject.

CLEVELAND CLINIC UNVEILS

TOP 10 MEDICAL INNOVATIONS FOR 2021 An up-and-coming gene therapy for blood disorders. A new class of medications for cystic fibrosis. Increased access to telemedicine. These are some of the innovations that will enhance healing and change healthcare in the coming year, according to a distinguished panel of clinicians and researchers from a top American hospital, Cleveland Clinic. In conjunction with the 2020 Medical Innovation Summit, Cleveland Clinic announced the Top 10 Medical Innovations for 2021. Now in its 18th year, the annual Medical Innovation Summit is organized by Cleveland Clinic Innovations, the development and commercialization arm of Cleveland Clinic. The list of breakthrough technologies was selected by a committee of Cleveland Clinic subject matter experts, led by Will Morris, M.D., executive medical director for Cleveland Clinic Innovations, and Akhil Saklecha, M.D., managing director of Cleveland Clinic Ventures. Here, in order of anticipated importance, are the Top 10 Medical Innovations for 2021:

1. Gene Therapy for Hemoglobinopathies

Hemoglobinopathies are genetic disorders affecting the structure or production of the hemoglobin molecule – the red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood. The most common hemoglobinopathies include sickle cell disease and thalassemia – which combined affect more than 330,000 children born worldwide every year. Sickle cell is prevalent in the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Mediterranean. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), traits for thalassemia are more common in people from Mediterranean countries and in people from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The latest research in hemoglobinopathies has brought an experimental 12

OCTOBER 2020

gene therapy, giving those who have the disorder the potential ability to make functional hemoglobin molecules – reducing the presence of sickled blood cells or ineffective red blood cells in thalassemia to prevent associated complications.

2. Novel Drug for Primary-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis

In individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), the immune system attacks the fatty protective myelin sheath that covers the nerve fibers – causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body that can result in permanent damage or deterioration and eventual death. Approximately 15 percent of people with MS experience a disease subset known as primary-

progressive, characterized by gradual onset and steady progression of signs and symptoms. A new, FDA-approved therapeutic monoclonal antibody with a novel target is the first and only MS treatment for the primary-progressive population.

3. Smartphone-Connected Pacemaker Devices

Implantable devices like pacemakers and defibrillators deliver electrical impulses to the heart muscle chambers to contract and pump blood to the body. They are used to prevent or correct arrhythmias – heartbeats that are uneven, too slow or too fast. Remote monitoring of these devices is an essential part of care. Traditionally, remote monitoring of this device takes place through a bed-side console that transmits the pacemaker or defibrillator data to the physician. Though millions of patients have pacemakers and defibrillators, many lack a basic understanding of the device or how it functions and adherence to remote monitoring has been suboptimal. Bluetooth-enabled pacemaker devices can remedy these issues of disconnection between patients and their cardiac treatment. Used in conjunction with a mobile app, these connected devices allow patients greater insight into the health data from the pacemakers and transmit the health information to their physicians.

4. New Medication for Cystic Fibrosis

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, more than 70,000 people worldwide are living with cystic fibrosis (CF) – a hereditary condition characterized by thick, sticky mucus that clogs airways and traps germs, leading to infections, inflammation and other complications. CF is caused by a defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. A class of drugs called CFTR modulators correct the protein’s action, but medications developed prior to last year had only been effective in a subset of people with certain mutations. A new combination drug, FDA approved in October 2019, provides relief for patients with the most common CF gene mutation (F508 del) – estimated to represent 90 percent of individuals living with the disease.

5. Universal Hepatitis C Treatment

Classified as a “silent epidemic” by the CDC, hepatitis C infection can lead to serious, life-threatening health problems like liver failure, cirrhosis and liver cancer. With no vaccine for the virus, patients have been limited to medication, but many treatments were accompanied by adverse side effects or only effective for certain genotypes of the disease. A new, approved fixed-dose combination medication has vastly improved hepatitis C treatment. More than 90 percent effective for hepatitis C genotypes one through six, the therapy represents an effective option for a wider scope of patients.

6. Bubble CPAP for Increased Lung Function in Premature Babies

Underweight and frail, babies born prematurely often require specialized care – including ventilation for those with infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS). For IRDS, infants are commonly administered surfactant during mechanical ventilation, a practice that can cause lasting lung injury in preterm infants and contribute to the development of chronic lung disease. Unlike mechanical ventilation, b-CPAP is a non-invasive ventilation strategy – delivering continuous positive airway pressure to newborns to maintain lung volumes during exhalation. The oscillating, rather than constant pressure, plays a role in its safety and efficacy, minimizing physical trauma and stimulating lung growth when administered over a prolonged period.

7. Increased Access to Telemedicine through Novel Practice and Policy Changes

COVID-19 saw increased adoption of telemedical practices as clinicians needed to conduct patient visits online. An increasingly virtual care

model and increased consumer adoption came by way of fundamental shifts in policy in many countries. In the U.S. for example, since March, state and federal regulators have moved quickly to reduce barriers to telehealth, understanding that these new tools can speed access to care while protecting healthcare workers and community members. These measures opened the floodgates for telehealth, allowing for new programs and the expansion of existing networks.

8. Vacuum-Induced Uterine Tamponade Device for Postpartum Hemorrhage Characterized as excessive bleeding after having a baby, postpartum hemorrhage is a devastating complication of childbirth, affecting from one to five percent of women who give birth. Mothers experiencing postpartum hemorrhage may require blood transfusions, drugs which may cause dangerous side effects, long uncomfortable procedures, and even emergency hysterectomy with loss of fertility. Non-surgical interventions directed at the site of bleeding has been limited to balloon devices that expand the uterus while compressing the site of bleeding. But the newest advancement is that of vacuum-induced uterine tamponade – a method that uses negative pressure created inside the uterus to collapse the bleeding cavity causing the muscle to close off the vessels. The vacuum-induced device represents another minimally invasive tool for clinicians as they treat the complication and provides a low-tech solution that is potentially translatable to developing countries with low resource availability.

9. PARP Inhibitors for Prostate Cancer About one man in nine will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. While there has been progress in the last decade, the disease is the sixth leading cause of cancer death among men worldwide, according to the American Association for Cancer Research. PARP inhibitors – pharmacological inhibitors for cancer treatment – block proteins called PARP that help repair damaged tumor DNA in people with BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. Though known for their success in women’s cancers, two PARP inhibitors have been demonstrated to delay the progression of prostate cancer in men with refractory cancer and DNA repair pathway mutations. Both were approved for prostate cancer in the U.S. in May 2020.

10. Immunologics for Migraine Prophylaxis Migraines affect an estimated one billion people worldwide according to the Migraine Research Foundation. For some time, multi-purpose drugs like blood pressure medications, antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs and Botox injections have been used to prevent attacks. However, not developed specifically for migraines, these methods have been met with mixed results. In 2018, new medications were developed to help head off migraine pain. The class of drugs works by blocking the activity of a molecule called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), which spikes during a migraine. Actively prescribed in the U.S. in 2020, this new FDA-approved class of medication is the first to be specifically designed for the preventive treatment of migraine, marking a new era of migraine therapeutics. At next year’s Medical Innovation Summit, in addition to the annual Top 10 list, Cleveland Clinic will present a new award in honor of its rich history of innovation and advancements in healthcare delivery. The inaugural prize will be awarded to a team, organization or individual who has made a significant contribution to healthcare delivery with a focus on one or more defined areas. Details will be released in early 2021.

1. Japanese railways hand out ‘certificates’ for delays of more than five minutes. Japanese trains are known for being the most punctual in the world. Because of this, they have a reputation to uphold. If a train is running more than five minutes behind schedule, they issue passengers a delay pass to show to bosses or teachers to explain a passenger’s tardiness.

2. On the island of Yap, a state of Micronesia, rocks are used as currency. A rock’s worth is based on its size and where it came from. Rocks are used for ceremonial transactions such as during weddings. Yap also uses turmeric, shells and cloth as official currency.

3. Sudan has more ancient pyramids than Egypt. It is claimed that Sudan is home to around 250 pyramids while Egypt is thought to have a little over 100.

4. India’s trains transport roughly 23 million passengers each day. India’s trains move basically the entire population of Australia every day! The tracks from India’s railway network could circle the globe one and a half times.

5. In Ethiopia the current year is 2013. Believe it or not, Ethiopia maintains its own calendar, and it is seven to eight years behind the standard calendar used across most of the world. The new year in Ethiopia also begins on August 29th or 30th.

6. Pilots and co-pilots do not eat the same meal before a flight. It’s a standard rule that pilots and co-pilots don’t eat the same food before a flight in case of food poisoning. In this case, if one pilot gets sick, the other can take over.

7. The world’s longest commercial flight took around 30 hours. From 1943-1945, Qantas offered a flight called the ‘double sunrise’, meaning you saw the sunrise twice. The flight ran from Australia to Sri Lanka and lasted over 30 hours. Today, the longest commercial flight is Singapore Airlines’ route from Singapore to New York with a journey time of almost 18 hours.

8. The shortest commercial flight takes less than two minutes. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the shortest commercial flight operates between two islands in Scotland’s Orkney Islands. The fastest recorded flying time was actually less than 50 seconds.

9. Banana is a popular pizza topping in Sweden. And it is often paired with curry powder!

10. Despite what people say, the Great Wall of China is not visible from space. It’s not even visible from a low Earth orbit without magnification to be seen by the human eye. www.cpmagazine.net

ealthy sleep is essential for optimum energy, immunity, cognitive ability and physical strength and resilience.

With all the essential physiological functioning and repair that happens during sleep, emphasis on good sleep is one of the first and best things you can do to improve your overall health and well-being.

While you’re asleep, your body works to:

BENEFITS OF QUALITY SLEEP Repair tissues (including those involved in muscle growth and healing injuries) lRegulate hormone levels (including those that control appetite, metabolism and stress) lForm new pathways in your brain for learning and memory lProcess and regulate emotions l

THE IMPACT OF SLEEP LOSS ON YOUR HEALTH Routinely sleeping less than 6-7 hours per night can have serious health impacts: l Weight gain l weakened immune system l increased risk of diabetes l increased risk of heart disease and stroke l reduction in cancer-fighting cells l increased risk of injury l increased stress hormone levels

Increased energy Strengthened immune system l Heightened alertness, focus and creativity l Improved mood l Improved physical performance and ability to build muscles l Increased motivation to make beneficial lifestyle choices (cooking, exercise, self-care, etc.) Sleep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day. l l

HOW MUCH SLEEP DO YOU REALLY NEED? Everyone requires quality sleep for optimal health and well-being, but the number of hours can vary depending on individual and age group. The National Sleep Foundation and Centers for Disease Control recommend 7-9 hours for adults. Pay attention to your sleep this week: How many hours per night are you getting? CP MAGAZINE: Tell us a little bit of your journey. Amal Al Raisi: I never thought that fashion would

one day be my career. I always had a passion for it but considered it more of a hobby. It wasn’t until I was getting married and couldn’t find the right local designer who understood what I wanted, so I decided to work on my own dress. I received many compliments on my dress so family and friends wanted me to help them make their own designs. That was the starting point. From there I started designing traditional Omani dresses, abayas and jalabiyas and in 2010 I opened my multi brand boutique in Muscat, stocking my collections and other regional brands. In 2015, I decided to venture into ready-to-wear and it was in 2016 that I secured my first international retailer. Since then I have steadily grown my brand and increased retailers and clients across the region.

CP: How would you describe your design style? AAA: Feminine, sophisticated and classic. CP: What sources do you use to find out about

fashion trends?

AAA: I prefer to design styles that transcend seasons

rather than follow trends. But I do look to trend forecasters, runway trends and social media for colour and silhouette inspiration.

CP: Your collections are often described as

“feminine” and “pretty”. How do you perceive these two terms?

AAA: My collections are described as feminine and pretty from the cuts, colour palette and embellishments but through my designs, I hope to empower women and encourage them to follow their dreams.

CP: You created your own very successful

fashion brand. What were the challenges you faced while building your brand?

AAA: There have been many challenges, I am constantly learning which is also part of the journey! But I would have to say the current pandemic has probably been the biggest and toughest challenge so far. It has taken an unexpected turn in each one of our lives by completely changing our day-to-day activities. We have had to make many adjustments and reassess our strategies, which has been difficult. However, I am grateful for my health and my family and I remain positive for the future. CP: What was the inspiration behind the AW20

collection?

AAA: The beautiful khors and mountains of Musandam inspired me. It’s one of my favourite places to visit; the rugged scenery is just breath taking.

CP: What do you think about the fact that

modest fashion is kind of trendy right now?

AAA: The rise of social media helped to launch the

modest fashion trend. But now I think it’s less a trend and a way of dressing. Modest doesn’t just have to be for a certain religion or culture, women the world over can dress in this style and interpret it in their own way.

CP: Can you describe the feeling you get when you see someone wearing your dresses at an event?

AAA: When I see a client wearing one of my designs, it fills me with so much joy. It really makes all the hard work worthwhile.

CP: Who would be your dream person to dress? AAA: The Eminent Sayyida Ahad bint Abdullah Al

Busaidi, who is a role model to every Omani woman. I adore her personal style and I hope to always have her liking my style. 30

FormerlyMe.com presents “MMA Sessions”

WHAT IS FORMERLYME?

FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “MMA Sessions” of my journey. Jim West

F

rom March to May 2020, I took private Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training sessions from Taylor Hickman. Taylor Hickman is the 71st ranked of 242 active US Southwest Amateur Lightweights, and also ranked at Welterweight (56th). Taylor is also the 24th ranked of 89 active Texas Amateur Lightweights, and also ranked at Welterweight (21st). He has 5 years boxing, 3 years in Brazilian Jujitsu & MMA. Blue belt 2 stripe under Alex Morono (UFC Middleweight & Brazilian Jujitsu Black Belt) at Gracie Barra in The Woodlands, TX. 5x Grappling Games Gold Medalist, and is also 5x ONNIT Academy Certified: Foundations, Durability, Steel Club Specialist, Kettlebell Specialist, Barbell Specialist. Taylor studied Kinesiology with Emphasis in Physical Therapy at St. Edward's University. I was excited to experience MMA from inside the octagon besides merely watching it on TV.

32

OCTOBER 2020

Every session with Taylor had me breaking a sweat in just a few minutes. He kept up the tempo for an entire grueling hour. I burned over 1000 calories in every session. The best part is I now have learned some things to defend myself should I need to, and now when I watch MMA fights on TV I understand exactly what they are experiencing in the octagon.

Taylor Hickman

Taylor started me with striking drills throwing jabs and crosses. The focus wasn’t just in the punching itself, but more so in the footwork. I had to repeatedly move my feet to setup the power in the punch. Then we hit the octagon. Taylor showed me how to grapple and position for takedowns and submissions.

These videos are on the YouTube channel: https://www.youtube. com/playlist?list=PLETeUyZdPdyoV3F_wpdB8kWHSyv1wUCpo

I was happy to experience MMA training and recommend it highly for those who want to lose weight while learning how to defend yourself. I was now looking forward to going back to weight training with Gene Labrada at Legacy Barbell. My new goal now was to focus on my upper body strength for the summer. Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) I learned several chokes to include Guillotine, Rear Naked, and training and the other fun activities I have experienced with my Ezekiel choke holds. All the while getting them done on myself by journey. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! Taylor and then practicing them on him. It was eye opening to me to see just how fast a choke hold can make the lights go out for an opponent. It gave me a tremendous appreciation for fighters facebook.com/FormerlyMe in MMA. The level of endurance and conditioning fighters have its twitter.com/MeFormerly simply astounding. instagram.com/formerlymeofficial

THE CULTURE, TASTE AND IDENTITY WHICH HAS EXISTED THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY OF SAUDI ARABIA. Bleu La Soie was founded in 2012 by Alanoud Alomani and Shahla Alghaith as a genuine Saudi abaya brand. We are talking about their latest collection, inspired by Russian and Ukrainian folk arts which are rooted in and reflective of the cultural life and heritage. The abaya collection includes objects which historically are crafted and used within a traditional community. 34

OCTOBER 2020

Most abayas are made from linen, what's the reason?

Linen is one of the oldest and most luxurious fabrics in the world. Throughout history, it has been a favorite of those in the higher echelons of power. Egyptian mummies were often found wrapped in linen for its durability and symbolic meaning attached to wealth. Bleu La Soie uses not only linen, but for the classic collections they love to use it because it’s never going to lose its value.

Do you feel that the abaya design is changing these days according to fashion tastes of the new generation?

Yes, definitely that’s why we always study the culture of Saudi Arabia. The abaya is a reflection of Saudi women’s culture, taste and identity which has existed throughout the history of Saudi Arabia. The abaya has transcended its traditional purpose as a cover for women to play an observable role in fashion and elegance of Saudi women.

Is the brand planning to expand production into different lines of clothes? Yes, we are working on a man's line that they can wear with their thobes. Bleu La Soie is seasonally producing ready to wear pieces which you can find in major Riyadh boutiques of traditional and modern clothing and an exclusive private showroom by @bleu.la.soie www.cpmagazine.net

TARFA ALFARHAN MEET THE FOUNDERS OF

SOUFFLE BEAUTY SKINCARE BRAND

www.cpmagazine.net

41

Please introduce yourselves to our readers. My name is Tarfa Alfarhan from Kuwait and my partner is Minnie Ang from Singapore. We are the co-founders of a skincare range called Souffle Beauty. Tell us about your education. We both graduated with a BBA in Hotel Management and Marketing from Les Roches Switzerland in 2011, and Tarfa has continued with an MBA in Service Industries and Marketing in Glion Switzerland in 2013. Talk to us about your career paths thus far. We started with internships in the hospitality industry working in hotels. As we graduated I have continued working in hotels, then moved onto the government sector working in International Trade department of the Ministry of Commerce in Kuwait. While Minnie kick started her career in different fields in Marketing with reputable companies in Singapore helping them scale up business B2C and B2B. How did the two of you meet and how did you decide to start up a skincare brand? We actually met a really long time ago back in university in 2008 where we we studied together in Swit-zerland. We really could not escape from each other as we had the same classes. Both of us were always keen to do ur school projects together. This has led us to recognize each others’ strengths and weaknesses, and from there we were able to establish a “telepathic understanding. We knew how to balance out each other but also there always has been a positive working dynamic when we are together. Our skincare brand was launched in 2018 when I visited Minnie in Singapore. We always had an interest in simple beauty routines as we are always on the go and have active lifestyles. Though we did have something in common in common is the fact that we live in hot humid climates and wondered can science solve skincare issues within these weather conditions.

42

OCTOBER 2020

When was the brand officially launched and where? The brand was officially launched in Singapore and was retailed in Singapore Changi Airport in 2018 in the beginning. Later on after a few months we decided to launch in Kuwait to create a second base. We can see there is a lot of potential to grow the brand in Kuwait. The Kuwaiti market is small which can give us the opportunity to penetrate faster. What were some of the initial challenges you had to face to launch your brand and how did you overcome them? The initial challenge was to come up with the perfect formula to cater for all skincare types. We wanted to obtain a universal ingredient mixed with the latest discoveries. There was a lot of research and development which took time to develop along with many trials. To overcome this challenge we worked with professionals scientists in the field to give us the ideal solutions and understand what we are looking for. This is how we decided to incorporate a “grandma” ingredient Rose (which is popularized worldwide and even has a historical impact in the Arab world) and Microbiomes (prebiotic & probiotics). Another challenge would be finding the correct suppliers to barter with in order to deliver our vision. The beauty in Asia as being an industrial location has helped us ease our search for suppliers. We also had issues with understanding regulations in each region since its different. But with determination and the intensive research we were able to conduct regulatory paperwork on our own. What makes your beauty and skincare products different and unique? Our skincare is unique due to the fact that firstly it is made in Singapore, usually Asian skincare is popu-larized with K-beauty however we wanted to showcase that a small country like Singapore can create wonderful products. Furthermore we took into consideration the environmental factors and focused on really strengthening the skin. We created a formula that gives the whole package which includes hydration, anti wrinkle, anti inflammatory, anti oxidants, and rejuvenation. Its really an everyday product to be used. In addition our range is all PETA certified therefore cruelty, paraben and alcohol free. We also aim to create a minimalistic skincare routine that does not require much time or effort. What is your current product range? Souffle Beauty started off in 2018 with 3 products. This includes The Balm that is an oil based facial cleanser that removes all traces of dirt. The Potion is a gentle toner that balances out skin ph levels and removes dead skin cells. The Serum is a water base serum that is smooth in application and fast absorbent, as well this is our award serum that won a beauty reward in Singapore (Awarded Best Urban Se-rum 2020 by Beauty Insider Choice). Despite the pandemic slowing down some of our business enter-prises we have launched 2 new products. We launched the Anti-Pollution Gel Cleanser for daily use and prevents the adhesion of PM 2.5. Next it was our Sheet Mask with double hooks to offer a lifting affect.

Where are your products available as of now? In the Middle East we are visible in Kuwait with various online platforms such as Aybiz, Amavi, Urabn Point and Zay. This includes our own website www. soufflebeauty.com where they can find us. On the offline platform we are available in boutique shops, salons, and Vavavoom with Alshaya. We have con-tracted with Skinfit Pakistan, Glamazale Dubai, and BeingLayla in Oman recently. In SEA firstly we have been visible offline in Changi International Airport, Naiise, and SASA (before the pandemic). During the pandemic time we had the honor to be part of Singapore’s biggest cosmeceutical chain called Watsons and retailing with them. Moreover were able to go under an online contract with BeautyMNL in the Philippines and currently we are seeking opportunities in China, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. How has the pandemic affected your business and what lessons have you learnt during these times? The pandemic has put a strain on our roadshows for China and Beauty World Dubai. Therefore the les-sons we learned was to pivot our business strategy. When curfew occurred in Kuwait it was quite diffi-cult to contract with drivers for deliveries, so I was conducting deliveries myself to ensure the customers receive the products on time. They actually appreciated it to see an owner of the business and a female delivering products around Kuwait. As well on our website we created different type of promotions to encourage sales. Our promotions were very attractive as there were more than one bundles available. During the pandemic people were mostly staying at home so we have been more active on our social media through giving beauty tips, skincare topics, and even interviews with different people to connect with our communities. We also had an issue with cross border shipping as it was closed up but we managed through recovering orders from our customers via pre-orders and first come first serve strategy. What are some of the achievements you are proud of? Honestly we are proud of our journey from where we started and to the position we are at now. It was really a tough journey building a skincare brand from A-Z. With our strong friendship and despite the distance we were able to come together and bring Souffle Beauty to life. We are happy to see our hard work appreciated by our customer base. As well we really do feel happy when we can offer something great to the community and put smiles on their faces. What is your own beauty regime? We are quite similar when it comes to our beauty regime, honestly hydrate with water due to the fact we live in hot and humid climates. Next is to keep skin fresh and clean at all costs to avoid pores and breakouts. Lastly moisturize and wear minimal makeup during the day.

What are your favourite products from the range and why? Personally for us its really hard to choose between all of them. If we really had to it would be the Serum due to the lightness and effectiveness. Next would be the Toner as we are always amazed on how much access dirt it can remove. Lastly its the Sheet Mask due to the fact the way it stays on the face and we can do some errands without worrying about it falling off.

What are your plans post-pandemic and your long-term plans for the business? It is to participate in the roadshows that have been postponed due to the pandemic. The long term plan is to develop more products that align with our vision in what we want to achieve in skincare. Also build the brand’s visibility in our regions through making Souffle Beauty an essential for women today.

How do you plan or what is the process of adding a new product to your line? The planning process takes extensive research but also taking into consideration what the community really needs or wants. We sometimes base it on our lifestyle seeing what type of skincare can be as effective for modern women today. Once we finished the planning process we move on to obtaining the ingredients and seeing which ingredients fits best. There is a long testing process as mentioned before and we also test with friends, family and focus groups to understand how does the product play a role with their skin. After that once we give the product the green light we start planning our production range and packaging. Here we start meeting many designers and suppliers to create an attractive but convenient packaging.

What message do you want to convey to young female entrepreneurs and in particularly the Arab women? There are a lot of ups and downs when it comes to building a business it is crucial to come up with an idea that is innovative or re-design an idea that has been already existent. One of the traits of an Arab women is “resiliency” and we believe with resilience anything can happen. The region has earned its place for being an incubator of young females making things happen, therefore the will to not to give up must be there. As well not to be afraid when the word “NO” is given, that is just a learning curve. Understandable its easier said than done but taking it with pinch of salt is really the road to success. Entrepreneurship is truly a journey and it will never be boring!

What roles do each of you play in the business? Minnie handles all SEA operations, while I am handling EMEA. Our tasks are quite a lot as we are a bootstrapped business fully funded by ourselves. Range of tasks include bartering with suppliers, creating marketing campaigns, accounting, logistics, design, KOL reach, social media management, and many more.

Your message for us at CP magazine. Thank you CP magazine for giving us the opportunity to showcase our story and our brand. We really hope we were be able to inspire the ladies in the Arab region to go and follow their dreams and aspira-tions.

entley Fragrances, the international luxury brand, has introduced Silverlake, an exciting new addition to its Bentley For Men range. Characterised by its distinctive and vibrant scent, Silverlake captures the energising air of the world outdoors. Crafted from the highest-quality natural materials, this spirited new fragrance meets the same exacting standards as Bentley cars. In Bentley For Men Silverlake, the upand-coming young perfumer Ane Ayo has developed layer upon layer of cool aromatic notes and is based on peerless, sustainable and natural ingredients. The scent opens with a rush of ice-cool notes, as lemon and peppermint essences blend to create the effect of a gust of pure, invigorating mountain air. As the heart of the fragrance unfolds, the green, moist-earth accents of violet leaf absolute evoke a majestic forest, touched by the frosty bite of pink pepper essence. The cool sheen of lavender hints at the silver water of a lake, reflecting the clear blue sky. Boosting these bracing accords, a powerful blend of ambery woods carried by a breeze of pure white musk give the scent its crisp, modern, long-lasting trail. An iconic bottle, reinvented in ice-cool silver, designed to reflect the lines and curves of a Bentley car, the rounded form of the For Men bottle takes on a sleek new elegance with Silverlake, reflecting the cool accords of the new fragrance. Lacquered in silver, the lozenge-shaped body of the flacon becomes as reflective as the mirrored surface of a mountain lake, half-transparent, half-opaque like its crystalline waters. Its surface echoes the polished silver metal shoulders of the bottle, embossed with the striking Bentley emblem. The silver cap is ringed with Bentley’s signature knurling. The sky-blue box reprises the motif at the top, with a band of textured blue knurling. Hot-stamped in silver, black and white, the Bentley emblem seems to soar over the name of the scent, inscribed in silver against the blue background. JULIEN SPRECHER

“Perfumery has a bright future ahead, especially in the niche sector, as more people are looking for uniqueness and quality in the fragrances they wear” High-end perfumery brand ‘Parfums de Marly’, founded in 2009 by Julien Sprecher, conjures up a dreamlike state with its “signature” fragrances, a strong position and concepts that are short, striking, direct and clear, in which Julien Sprecher’s favourite ingredients can be found, like famous quotations. Its world: the 18th century, the splendour of a golden age of perfumery, where the court of the French King, known by the other European monarchies as “the perfumed court”, and the luxury of the fragrances created in Grasse, the world perfume capital. Drawing its inspiration from this flamboyant period, Parfums de Marly revives and updates this tradition of exceptional perfumery under the creative control of experts to reflect modernity with a clear concept of aesthetics.

CP Magazine: What is your first ‘scent memory’? Julien Sprecher: Wow, this was so long ago, I’m not sure I remember. CP: When did you decide you wanted to be an Artistic Director? JS: I had the chance to grow up in a family of perfume professionals. Attracted by smells very early on, I knew this is what I was meant to do. As a child, I already knew how to recognize the flavours, scents, and ingredients very quickly. I started my career 20 years ago when the niche perfume industry was just taking off, as a reaction to the olfactory standardization of traditional perfumery. As time passed, I became addicted to luxurious, fine scents and seeing as niche brands were not as diverse at that time, I decided to set off and launch Parfums de Marly. I wanted to participate in this movement, convinced I had something to contribute. Perfume, above all, is a work of art, passion and, by definition, niche.

CP: What are your five favourite smells in the world? JS: If I was to pick just five, these would have to be a lavender field in Grasse,

a forest of eucalyptus in California, the countryside after a summer rainfall, the smell of the Corsican shrubland in the morning and walls covered in star jasmine in June.

CP: What is your favourite part of being an Artistic Director? JS: My favourite part remains the "briefing" phase with the great perfumers with

whom I had and still have the chance to work with. The research part on the first "olfactory catchphrase", as well as the back and forth with the perfumers is my favourite and ultimately the most important part of my profession.

CP: What is your best tip for improving a person’s sense of smell? JS: We have different senses, and the more you make use of them, the better

and stronger they become. The best way to improve your sense of smell is to build your scent IQ and this can be done by simply smelling different aromatic things around you such as cheese, coffee beans, tea leaves, fruits in the market, chocolates. Next time, before you take a bite of artisanal cheese or a sip of a drink, first take time to breathe in the smell.

CP: What is the best way to purchase perfume? JS: Purchasing perfume is a delicate and very individual process so you must

pace yourself, to find the perfect one. Make sure that when buying a fragrance, you test out different scents - inhale, exhale and think about the notes, are these fruity, floral, musky. It is also very important that when setting off on a fragrance experience, your skin is void of lotions and perfumes, as you won’t be able to properly feel the scents you are testing out.

CP: Tell us a little about Sedley. Who does it speak to? JS: An original fragrance with a radiant sillage designed as a manifesto for

all generations of aesthetes, Sedley opens up a new dimension in the men’s fragrance range of Parfums de Marly. This classic yet modern fragrance is a blend of bergamot, spearmint and watery accord, with geranium bourbon, lavender and sunny notes and in the background the ultimate woody signature, which embodies tradition mixed with contemporary aestheticism.

CP: As an art director, you find the greatest energy and inspiration for Sedley in different materials. What are your favourites? Tell us more about your favourite notes in perfumery. JS: I love working with orange blossom, as not only is it a reassuring scent -

bring back memories of my childhood, but it is also one of those rare ingredients that can be combined with others and is often used when creating modern and elegant fragrances, such as Safanad from our women’s collection.

CP: Pegasus Exclusif is finally available now. Our readers and I, of course, want to know more about this fragrance.

JS: Nobler, with greater freedom, Pegasus Exclusif has set off in pursuit of new masculinity. With an image of deconstructed masculinity, as with the olfactory stereotypes, this fragrance’s essence undeniably bears the stamp of the contemporary man. Eight years ago, Pegasus marked a chapter in Parfums de Marly’s history with its woody and exceptionally distinguished signature. Now, with Pegasus Exclusif, two of its most characteristic and addictive ingredients, bitter almond and vanilla, are retained, making the formula not quite the same, but also, not quite different.

CP: How long did the fragrance take in the making? JS: It can take years to perfect a perfume. Until I am completely satisfied with the scent, sillage and longevity, the perfume is not complete.

CP: If some emotions could describe the composition, what

would they be?

JS: Of course, these would be strength and resilience. CP: How do you see the future of perfumery? How about

perfumery in the GCC?

JS: Perfumery has a bright future ahead, especially in the niche sector, as more people are looking for uniqueness and quality in the fragrances they wear.

CP: What is your next project? JS: The focus for the brand is to expand our foothold consistently to new

regions. Our formulas have a strong signature, which helps them stand out in very competitive markets. We have new fragrances in the works, and there are a lot more exciting things in the pipeline for the brand, you only have to wait and see. www.cpmagazine.net

HOW TO BEAT THE COVID-19 WINTER BLUES ADVICE FROM A LICENSED PSYCHOTHERAPIST WITH 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE Noel McDermott

Darker days and colder nights have arrived and across the nation many will be feeling a winterrelated low mood. Add to this the demands of life during a pandemic and the looming extra lockdown measures and it’s understandable why so many of us will be suffering from The Covid-19 Winter Blues. This Autumn/Winter is going to be a particularly challenging time and Psychotherapist Noel McDermott has put together the following advice on how people can boost their mood.

N

oel comments: “First it’s important to remember Winter Blues are normal and do not indicate you have a serious mood disorder, but equally accept it requires some changes and interventions on your part so that it doesn’t develop into a serious problem”.

mood and makes us healthier in a global manner. Healthy body is healthy mind as they say

Tips on How to Beat the Covid-19 Winter Woes

Talk to folk about it…again a standard go-to in mood regulation is talking with people who love you about your feelings. We get all sorts of neurological mood uplifting boosts when we emotionally connect with another person

Buy a SAD lamp (or a daylight bulb)…winter blues often happen

Make sure you get enough sleep…there is a reason that sleep

because we don’t get enough daylight and it messes with the chemistry in our brains. Buying a SAD (seasonal affective disorder) lamp or a daylight bulb and exposing ourselves to it for a few hours a day is great to lift mood. If you buy a daylight bulb you can put it into your desk lamp (at work/home) and ensure you get enough daylight

Nutritional supplements...such as St John’s Wort or 5HTP are used by many people to help manage seasonal fluctuations in mood Exercise…is the go-to in mood regulation always. It helps lift

deprivation is officially a form of torture, it really messes you up. So, practice good sleep hygiene, cut down on stimulants, reduce lighting levels at night, stop blue screen stimulation in the evening, go to bed and get up at regular times

Eat and hydrate…eat at regular times and eat regular amounts and ensure you drink enough water. Lack of food and water leaves us distressed and it’s such an easy fix. Resist the temptation to eat to manage feelings as this leaves us psychologically distressed further

Planning for a Covid-19 Christmas

This year we have even greater challenges amongst us with many of us worried that Christmas is going to be cancelled. It looks unlikely we'll be celebrating the sort of Christmas we're all used to and sadly, we are unlikely to find a vaccine under the Christmas tree this year. However, Noel stresses the importance of and comments: “People should still plan for their Christmas because looking forward to something gives us a sense of positivity which we could all do with right now.”

Positive Psychology Techniques

60

Everyone can benefit from positive psychology techniques, have a healthy structure to your day, one that sees you eat, hydrate, rest, sleep, and work at reasonable times. Stay connected and make social times with family and friends and exercise daily. Manage your mind with techniques that allow you to challenge your thinking if it becomes unhealthy (cognitive restructuring) or how to move your mind from harmful thoughts to helpful ones (through for example meditation). Avoid panic behaviour such as stocking up which send signals to yourself that there is a big risk. By doing this we are making things seem dangerous. Develop acceptance and learn to live more in the moment, reducing your expectations (acceptance) will give you power back to your thoughts and feelings. We must get on with life as best as possible, embrace the situation and look for the positives, ask yourself, what are you grateful for? Learning how to thrive in the face of adversity will lead to positive growth from traumatic situations, helping you develop meaning and purpose and manage those feelings associated with the Winter Blues. EXERCISE BENEFITS WOMEN FIGHTING BREAST CANCER, STUDY SAYS Dr. Thomas Budd

In Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an expert from an American hospital who was involved in the research says that working out could greatly reduce the chances of the disease coming back

R

ecent research shows exercising benefits women fighting breast cancer, and indications are that being more active could greatly reduce the chances of the cancer coming back. “The magnitude of the benefits seen with increased activity was quite substantial,” said Thomas Budd, MD of American hospital Cleveland Clinic, who was one of the study authors. “There was somewhere between a 40-to-50% chance of reducing the relative risk of the cancer coming back and even greater degrees in reduction in death.” More than 1,000 patients took part in the study. He said while it is known that exercising can be beneficial, researchers wanted to collect more evidence about how it could impact someone both before and after the cancer diagnosis. Dr. Budd notes that researchers learned that doing something as simple as walking for a half-hour each day made a big difference. It is important to note that the exercise was done in addition to standard cancer treatments, he stresses. Dr. Budd adds that the data suggest it is never too late to start exercising if you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. “Patients who did the worst were those who had very little activity,” said Dr. Budd. “Another important finding was that patients who were inactive before treatment, but who became active one year, or two years, later also had decreases in recurrence in breast cancer and death that were similar in size, or magnitude, with patients who had great degrees of activity.” Dr. Budd and the research team plan to continue studying the science behind exercising but, in the meantime, he encourages everyone to get moving. The NIH study, which was a joint venture between SWOG Cancer Research Network, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Cleveland Clinic and others, can be found in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. www.cpmagazine.net

MATTERS OF MATERIAL SUPPORTING ART WITH A CONSCIENCE This autumn Christie’s will be presenting “Matters of Material”, an exhibition and online sale dedicated to promoting diversity in the international art market and promoting sustainability in the arts. The initiative will be part of the Middle Eastern Modern and Contemporary Art sale week taking place this November in London. Showcasing contemporary artists from the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, the prevalent theme among the selected works will be on how materials can be used and recycled to create powerful statements and works of art, as well as how the selected geographies share universal and mutual creative affinities. This sale will be guest curated by Christie’s international consultant Dina Nasser-Khadivi and staged in collaboration with the Middle Eastern Art and European Post War & Contemporary Art department. The online sale will be running from Nov 11-24 (browsing starting on Nov 4) and the preview at Christie’s King Street will be open from Nov 14-23.

OCTOBER 2020

C

aroline Louca-Kirkland, Managing Director for Christie’s Middle East: “We are always looking at ways to present and add new works and concepts to our sales ensuring a place for Middle Eastern art within the international art market. Dina Nasser-Khadivi inspired us with her concept Matters of Material, setting and engaging art from the Middle East into a wider geographical context. We are really looking forward to continue to add such initiatives and sales to our auction calendar this season which will also include our charity auction We Are All Beirut - online between 4th – 24th November.” Katherine Arnold Co-Head of Post-War & Contemporary Art, Europe: ‘Matters of Material’ curated by Dina Nasser Khadivi creates an important dialogue between east and west, north and south, offering the best of Middle Eastern, Latin American and African art on an international platform. In a time when integration, collaboration and affirmative action takes on even greater urgency, this auction feels both relevant and essential.’ Dina Nasser-Khadivi defines the auction concept as follows: “One of the beauties of the art world is that it can transcend borders and Christie’s has been instrumental at giving artists around the globe a voice and a platform. They were the first auction house to launch the Middle Eastern category and raise awareness about the cultural and artistic potential of the region. There is an important Middle Eastern diaspora in the world -including in both Africa and Latin America- as well as mutual affinities between the chosen geographies. This becomes apparent through the selection of artists in this sale. Diversity, sustainability, innovation and multi-cultural connections are the core pillars behind Matters of Material, or in short art with a conscience.” This collaboration aims to emphasize how diversity is key in today’s art market and how crucial it is to support a wider group of artists and multi-cultural initiatives under the current climate where so many economies and artistic communities have been affected by COVID-19. The online sales at Christie’s will enable new means of international outreach and help forge a strong global platform for such initiatives. Art with a conscience: part of the core messages behind the curatorial approach is how the adopted techniques and materials by the selected artists translate into their messages, all of which are universal concerns such as creating sustainable art, combining the local crafts with the global trends, as well as important topics such as gender equality, identity and globalization amongst others . Aiming to equally engage with seasoned and young collectors, Matters of Material will include works from acclaimed artists Monir Farmanfarmain, Olga de Amaral, Eduardo Terrazas, Gabriel de la Mora, Farhad Moshiri, Pascale Martine Tayou, Maha Malluh, Ghada Amer, Mounir Fatmi, Nabil Nahas, Moataz Nasr as well as younger emerging stars such as Lina Ben Rejeb, Catalina Swinburn and Mahmoud Bakhshi.

Selected highlights include Tranquility, 2017 an installation created for the occasion of Farhad Moshiri’s (Iran, b.1963) first retrospective in the US, at The Andy Warhol Museum. Considered an international leader in the neo-pop movement as well as one of the most prominent figures of Middle Eastern contemporary art, Moshiri became well known for his ironic interpretations of hybrids between traditional Iranian forms and those of the globalized consumerist and popular culture. (estimate £120,000-180,000). Pascale Marthine Tayou’s (Cameroon, b. 1967) Fresque de Craies K, 2015 is inspired by Cameroonian tradition, but also alludes to the processes of art-making and educational tools through the choice of materials typically used for writing or drawing. From the outset of his career, Tayou added an “e” to his first and middle name to give them a feminine ending, thus distancing himself from the importance of artistic authorship and male/female ascriptions. This holds for any reduction to a specific geographical or cultural origin as well. (estimate: £150,000-200,000). Gabriel de la Mora’s (Mexico, b. 1968) works bears evidence of human interaction—the points of contact, the passage of time, the wear and tear of life. Approaching his work as an archivist, de la Mora and his studio extend their hands to the tasks of sourcing, analyzing, counting, documenting, and refining a whole host of objects, from discarded shoe soles to the sides of matchboxes. In the diptych 355,050 (176,500 + 178,550), 2014 de la Mora explores the household match. Referencing the passage of time, the artist includes in the description of his medium not only how many used sides of the matchboxes each artwork contains, but also the number of matches struck on them (estimate: £100,000-150,000). In recent years, Maha Malluh (Saudi Arabia, b. 1959) has turned to mixed media installations, using found objects that are understood as symbolic of a collective, communal identity; these materials include kitchen dishes, pots, cassette tapes of religious lectures, discarded oil barrels and metal doors

typical of the region. Bloom, 2019 (estimate: £15,000-20,000) is part of an ongoing series the artist has been working on titled Food for Thought. The title of the piece symbolizes the new beginnings for young generations and the momentous transformation and change in Saudi Arabia. Ghada Amer (Egypt, b. 1963) addresses first and foremost the ambiguous, transitory nature of the paradox that arises when searching for concrete definitions of east and west, feminine and masculine, as well as art and craft. Her incorporation of thread into the parameters of the canvas legitimates a form of expression seen as particularly feminine. The sentence ‘There is no greater pillar of stability than a strong, free and educated woman” refers to a quote activist Angelie Jolie made during the African Union Summit in Johannesburg in 2015. Lastly, working with the geopolitical concept of displacement, Catalina Swinburn’s (Chile-Argentina, b. 1979) weaves pages of historical archives, including documents of displaced patrimonial treasures. Through this labour-intensive approach, the material is transformed from delicate pages to garment-like arrangements that the artist often wears as armour to perform in. Anauša II – Immortal Warrior is made from documents relating to the displacement of archeological stones in Persepolis, bringing us closer to the topic of cultural identity and aiming to strengthen the integration between communities while also making a reference to female resilience (estimate £25,000-35,000).

FIVE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR KERATOCONUS Dr. Osama Giledi Consultant Ophthalmologist, Specialist in Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Vision Correction Surgery

The word Keratoconus comes from two Greek words: kerato (cornea) and konos (cone). Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder of the eye in which the shape of the cornea, which is usually round, is distorted and develops a cone-shaped bulge, resulting in reduced vision. Keratoconus is a relatively common condition. It affects one person in two thousand, occurs around the world and is quite common in the Middle East. Corneal keratoconus usually affects both eyes asymmetrically, and usually occurs in people between the ages of 10 to 25 years. The condition may progress for 10 years or more and then slow down or stabilize. As the condition progresses, vision becomes distorted and blurred, with increased sensitivity to light and glare. Keratoconus presents itself in more certain ethnic groups, such as the Arab countries, southern Europe, and southern Asia. Environmental and genetic factors are potential causes, but the exact cause is uncertain. It can be associated with other allergic diseases such as hay fever, eczema and asthma but we are not born with it and its onset usually happens around puberty. It is strongly associated with eye rubbing which can also make the symptoms progress rapidly. It is also seen more common among contact lens wearers.

T

he early detection of Keratoconus can have a significant impact on the success of treatment protocol. In fact, early detection is possible by generating computerized corneal shape and thickness measurements through corneal topography, using advanced technology such as a pentacam machine. If left untreated, Keratoconus could lead to significant visual impairment and blindness. Some of the most successful treatment options include:

66

OCTOBER 2020

Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) or Topography-guided laser surgery (TG-PRK) Keratoconus patients are not candidates for Lasik or normal laser correction. However, some patients benefit from limited PTK using corneal surface eximer laser correction to improve the surface irregularity of the cornea, when contact lenses cannot be tolerated. PTK is always combined with corneal cross linkage, undertaken either during the same procedure or afterwards. Patient should be aware it is not to get rid of the glasses.

Corneal transplantation It is recommended in advanced cases of keratoconus. Out of all types of organ transplant surgeries (heart, lung, and kidney), corneal transplantation is the most widespread and successful of these. There are various methods used for corneal transplant surgery. The old method includes removing the full thickness of diseased cornea and fixing the healthy cornea with stitches. As for following modern methods, the diseased frontal layers (DALK) is replaced and the patient retains the posterior portion of the

Spectacles and (Hard, Scleral or Toric Implantable) Contact Lenses These can provide good vision in the early stages of the condition and usually help to correct myopic astigmatism. When spectacles don’t work, rigid contact lenses and Scleral lenses usually provide very good vision if the patient can tolerate them. However, they should be fitted by a contact lens specialist. Toric Implantable Contact Lenses are generally used to treat high myopic astigmatism in patient who can see well with glasses. But if vision with glasses not good it may be used after improving corneal shape with an intracorneal ring or with very limited therapeutic Eximer laser correction. It can eliminate the need for optical aids altogether and in some patient’s results in improved vision and balance between the two eyes.

Corneal Collagen Cross linking (CXL) with Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) This technique increases the strength of the cornea and prevents the progression of Keratoconus. The modern approach of accelerated pulsed crosslinking is used to ensure an easier procedure for the patient. We use ultraviolet A (UVA 360 nm), Riboflavin (vitamin B2) to stiffen and harden the cornea about four times and this stops the deterioration of keratoconus. The process is carried out under topical anesthesia and several drops of riboflavin are placed in the eye for about 15 minutes and activated by ultraviolet (UVA) rays ranges from eight to thirty minutes depend on the case. The corneal cross linkage is considered one of the safest and most successful operations used to stop keratoconus degradation and may lead to some improvement in some cases.

Intracorneal Rings (Intacs , Keraring or Ferrara ring impants) These rings inserted into the cornea change the shape of the corneal cone, flattening it and making it a more regular and more central. This will help improve the vision for the majority of patients. We use it when patients cannot tolerate contact lenses, while the cornea is still clear, and the keratconus condition is not very advanced. A Femto-second laser is used to create the tunnel and the entry point for the rings, which has made it a very safe, affective and reliable procedure.

cornea, thereby reducing the percentage of corneal transplants complications, especially the rate and severity of the corneal graft rejection. To conclude, progression of Keratoconus depends on the patient’s age at the time of onset and the severity of eye rubbing. It is very important to avoid eye rubbing as it is also predisposing factor. The earlier the onset, the faster Keratoconus may progress. The condition always affects both eyes differently, so one eye may be more affected than the other. Future treatment for keratoconus is prevention. Molecular genetics are currently being studied and we hope to identify people who are predisposing for the condition to discover early and apply preventive treatment. Here are five healthy swaps to include in your child’s lunchbox: 1. Choose whole or sliced fruits instead of fruit juices that are high in added sugars 2. Make the box rich in whole grains. Swap those processed grains seen in breads, sugary cereals and pizza for whole grains like oats, brown rice and quinoa. 3. The more veggies, the better. Helps keep the box colourful. Swap potato fries or potato for carrots and tomatoes. 4. Focus on healthy proteins. Eggs are a great choice and kids love them. Opt for beans over red meats like processed sausages and bacon. When using oils, use trans fat-free oils and limit the use of butter where possible. 5. Make water cool again. Choose water over any drink. It’s always sugar-free and easy to finish. If your kids dislike water, infuse it with fruits. www.cpmagazine.net

How about a book that makes you barge into your boss's office to read a page of poetry from? That you dream of? That every movie, song, book, moment that follows continues to evoke in some way? The term "Apple" is a slur in Native communities across the country. It's for someone supposedly "red on the outside, white on the inside." Eric Gansworth is telling his story in Apple (Skin to the Core). The story of his family, of Onondaga among Tuscaroras, of Native folks everywhere. From the horrible legacy of the government boarding schools, to a boy watching his siblings leave and return and leave again, to a young man fighting to be an artist who balances multiple worlds. Eric shatters that slur and reclaims it in verse and prose and imagery that truly lives up to the word heartbreaking.

Thirty years ago, when Haruki Murakami's works were first being translated, they were part of a series of pocket-sized English-learning guides released only in Japan. Today his books are in fifty languages and have won prizes and sold millions of copies globally. How did a loner destined for a niche domestic audience become one of the most famous writers alive? This book tells one key part of the story. Its cast includes an expat trained in art history who never intended to become a translator; a Chinese-American ex-academic who never planned to work as an editor; and other publishing professionals in New York, London, and Tokyo who together introduced an understated, popinflected, unexpected Japanese voice to the wider literary world. David Karashima synthesizes research, correspondence, and interviews with dozens of individuals—including Murakami himself—to examine how countless behind-the-scenes choices over the course of many years worked to build an internationally celebrated author's persona and oeuvre.

e-designing one of the longest-enduring nameplates is a challenge, but one that the Chevrolet Corvette design team relished. The 2020 Corvette Stingray not only boasts one of the best interiors of any Corvette, but the best interior that General Motors, and indeed the wider industry, has ever built. It is no surprise that WardsAuto recently named the Corvette Stingray one of the 10 Best Interiors of 2020. “As America’s most iconic performance nameplate, redesigning the Corvette Stingray from the ground up presented the team a historic opportunity, something Chevrolet designers have desired for over 60 years,” said Michael Simcoe, Vice President of Global Design, General Motors. “It is now the best of America, a new arrival in the mid-engine sports car class. We know Corvette can stand tall with the best the world has to offer.” Even at first look, it is clear that the breathtaking cabin matches the unprecedented performance of the first-ever, mid-engine Corvette. The inspiration drawn from modern fighter jets flows seamlessly between the exterior and interior, with a cockpit that has been migrated forward by 16.5 inches to envelop the driver, encapsulating the aeronautic and high-performance spirit of the nameplate. The design team paid close attention to ergonomics to unlock more space in the interior to deliver a more comfortable ride. Vertical climate controls and ultra-thin vents minimize the height of the instrument panel, creating a low interior with more space than previous nameplates. The push-button transmission is meanwhile designed to save precious real estate in the center console. Finally, a new, squared-off, two-spoke, small diameter steering wheel enables an unobscured view of the 12-inch reconfigurable cluster display It’s challenging to design a cabin that provides a sense of occasion every time the driver steps into the car, while ensuring ergonomics and comfort but that’s where the Stingray’s interior design captures the essence of Corvette. The instrument panel, for instance, is wrapped in premium leather with luxurious touches of carbon-fiber in the cabin to signal its performance intent, keeping the design tasteful, while the suede microfiber interior trim provides added sportiness. It’s no secret that colors and trim, play a vital role in elevating any car’s interior, especially a performance vehicle like the Corvette and the 2020 Stingray offers more personalization options than ever so every driver can make their own design statement. In addition to 12 exterior colors, the 2020 Corvette Stingray also offers six interior color themes from Jet Black to Adrenaline Red, which can be matched with six different seatbelt colors and two optional stitching options. No Corvette need look alike and can now truly reflect their drivers personal design flairs. Going a step further, there are also three seat options in the 2020 Corvette Stingray. From sporty but comfortable with ample support with the GT1 to racing inspired but long-journey-comfort adjustable GT2 seats to, of course, Competition Sport seats designed for the track-focused driver. With the new mid-engine design relocating the iconic engine, it is easy to think that the interior would be less important, however not with the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. In fact, the show-stopping cabin speaks for itself. The Corvette Stingray will be available in showrooms across the Middle East from October 2020.

THE MINI FOR 20 YEARS THE ORIGINAL IN THE PREMIUM SEGMENT OF SMALL CARS At the end of September 2000, the modern MINI enjoyed its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show. The successful relaunch of the traditional British heritage brand introduced a completely new category of vehicle and laid the foundation stone for continuous development and diversity in the model range. A tour in an early MINI Cooper recalls memories of two decades packed with driving fun.

unich. An original celebrates a landmark anniversary. 20 years ago, the MINI was presented for the first time ever in a public arena at the Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris. A unique success story in the automobile sector commenced with the relaunch of the traditional British heritage brand under the umbrella of the BMW Group and the presentation of the models MINI One and MINI Cooper. As the successor to the classic Mini, which ceased to be produced just a few days later after 41 years, the second generation provided all the enablers for another revolution in the small car segment. The MINI was the first premium vehicle in this class. Its modern concept has promoted continuous advanced development to the present day, encompassing driving fun, efficiency, comfort, safety, connectivity and not least model diversity. A journey through time with an early example of the MINI Cooper provides an ideal opportunity to get on the track of the pioneering character exhibited by the second generation. The ambassador from the initial phase of the British original for the 21st century rolled off the assembly line in October 2001, six months after production had been launched at the MINI plant in Oxford. Three previous owners already experienced loads of driving fun as they powered along some 175,000 kilometres. And like every MINI, it was given a name. This model was dubbed “Sunny”, inspired by the paint finish for the body in Liquid Yellow, which transformed it into a rarity. In the first year of sales for the modern MINI in Germany, only one in every fifteen vehicles was supplied in this colour. The combination with a roof and door mirror caps in Black was even rarer. The starting signal for the development of the second generation of the MINI was already given in July 1994. Alongside styling details like the short overhangs, round headlamps and hexagonal radiator grille, a top priority for the designers was to transfer the fundamental idea from the initial years of the classic Mini to the modern era of the automobile. The modern MINI similarly needed to be unique, offer space for four people and their luggage, provide an efficient travelling experience and generate enthusiasm with driving characteristics not achieved by any other model in its class. Contemporary aspirations for comfort and maximum safety standards were also taken into account. Once again, a revolutionary new small car was created – geared to the requirements of its era in all criteria, and this time developed and manufactured to comply with all the quality benchmarks of a premium brand into the bargain. In autumn of 1997, selected journalists were permitted to take their first look at the MINI 2000 study. This generated the MINI fever. The relaunch of the brand and the imminent presentation of the series vehicle were the subjects of intense debate particularly online. In parallel to the world premiere in Paris, national and international MINI websites were launched and more than 100,000 prospective customers interested in the MINI had soon already registered. The sale of the MINI in the United Kingdom started on 7 July 2001 and the market launch in Germany was celebrated two months later. Already at this point, a weekend shift was introduced at the MINI plant in Oxford for the first time, so as to be in a position to meet the massive demand. And yet

the global triumph had only just begun. In Japan – where the classic Mini had a huge fan community – the second generation also encountered enormous interest. The sales launch there was scheduled for 2 March 2002 because this date is pronounced “MINI” in Japanese. At last, the turn of US fans finally came on 22 March 2002. The dealers there had already booked orders for 20,000 cars. The MINI of the second generation enthralled drivers around the world with its agile handling. Right up to the present day, “Sunny” leaves absolutely no doubt that the MINI has been designed for athletic driving and extreme cornering. The 85 kW/115 hp engine powering the MINI Cooper also provides impressive acceleration capacity. Some 20 years ago, this also impressed John Cooper – the ingenious sports-car designer who had previously paved the way for the classic Mini to take race tracks by storm. “The MINI Cooper puts a smile on your face,” he commented after his first test drive in the eponymous model once more named after him. The elementary design principles from the first generation had been taken over in the new edition with front-wheel drive and the transversely mounted four-cylinder engine at the front. However, the contemporary driving fun unrivalled in the competitive environment was now delivered by a MacPherson front axle with axle shafts of the same length, the multi-link rear axle that is unique in this segment, disk brakes on all four wheels and the series antilock braking system including cornering brake control and electronic brake force distribution. Right from the start, wide-ranging options were provided for individualising a key component of the typical MINI style. Diversity and premium look within the interior were created by a wide range of features including seats and upholstery, interior trims and steering wheels in many versions, alongside modern equipment options such as automatic climate control, heated seats, panorama sunroof and navigation. The original MINI accessories programme included auxiliary headlamps, white taillights, an aerodynamic package, a range of roof trims as well as additional instruments and even a car phone.

As early as 2003, a diesel engine was rolled out in the second generation of the MINI, and the convertible MINI Cabrio followed in the next year. The model diversity was even greater for the third generation launched in 2006. MINI Clubman, MINI Coupé and MINI Roadster joined the range. Not long after this, the brand succeeded in breaking into the premium compact segment where today the MINI Countryman and the new MINI Clubman create that go-kart feeling in a further dimension. Additional target groups were conquered in what is now the fourth model generation of the small car with the MINI 5-Door. The interior also demonstrates that reinterpretation of design features in the second generation of the MINI already formed the platform for technological advance. Here “Sunny” expresses its individual style most notably with the large speedometer in the centre of the instrument panel. In the first-generation MINI, the centrally positioned instrument had been replaced by new displays behind the steering wheel when the type MK V Mini was introduced in 1985. And in the latest fourth-generation MINI, speed, engine speed and other driver-related information are shown in a modern instrument cluster on the steering column – also in digital display depending on the model. Nevertheless, the central instrument continues to be an important design and control element to this day. It serves as a control display for navigation, infotainment, telephone and vehicle functions. Over the period of 20 years, the MINI has become noticeably more mature but its character still remains inimitable. And the fresh colour shade that suits “Sunny” so perfectly is now acting as a very special beacon for the future. Yellow colour accents characterise the MINI Cooper SE (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined electricity consumption: 16.8 – 14.8 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km), which marks the next evolutionary stage of the original as the first allelectric powered model of the brand. www.cpmagazine.net

Huawei launched yet another True Wireless Stereo earphones, the HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro.

Back at IFA 2019, the Huawei unveiled its flagship TWS earphone, the HUAWEI FreeBuds 3. The design of the earphones adopted the complex design of a dolphin’s vocal cavity, providing long lasting comfort and stability. From the earphone to the charging case, the HUAWEI FreeBuds 3 delivers a streamlined design language. During Huawei’s HDC 2020 event, the brand announced their new true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones, HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro. From the announcement, we saw that the new HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro adopts a similar yet different design from the previous generations, while also boasting a new iconic look with a wide range of smart features. The latest HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro takes a different approach in the design for a more iconic and premium look. The earphones’ stem forms a recognisable square geometric shape, which is unlike the rounded tube before. This unique design is very rare among the industry as well. Aside for the design purpose, would the stem design offer more interactions with its shape, provide more control on music playback through the earphone itself? The HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro also adopts an in-ear design both for wearing comfort and noise cancellation. In-ear design is undoubtedly providing an extra layer of noise cancellation compare to HUAWEI FreeBuds 3, showing Huawei is dedicated to provide an enhanced noise cancellation experience this time. Still, noise cancellation requires both hardware and software to work together, so we could expect Huawei to announce an upgraded or perhaps more intelligent active noise cancellation technology.

At this time, you will be front and center. When a full moon falls within your sign, you often see the culmination of a major personal goal or project. This will be tied to how hard you have been working toward it all year. Stand in your personal power and demand your worth. Now is an excellent moment to revel in your greatness and focus on you—just don’t launch an attack or a new project. Your ruler, Mars, will be retrograde this month, showing that while you will feel fired up, your hands may actually be tied behind you or you could be too optimistic. If you’re simply rolling out a project that has been in the works for quite some time and previously announced, you can certainly continue the plans. Just be careful about making any announcements that weren’t already solid before September.

(April 20 - May 20)

TAURUS With the mighty planet Mars causing frustration behind the scenes in your life, all Taurus natives may now feel more tired and burned out than usual. You may have been quite busy in recent months trying to get a project off the ground and now you realize that it has hit obstacles and could be at a standstill. This same area of the sky rules your mental health, so if you’re feeling anxious or angry, now might be a time to take a step back and prioritize rest and relaxation. A full moon in this same sector arrives at the onset of the month, pushing you to lie low and recharge. Don’t push too hard at this time because you will likely become quite fragile. However, once the power of the lunation fades in the first week, your attention returns to your work/life balance. It is likely you’re quite busy with your job at this time. The new moon on October 16 opens a door for you to move to a better employer, take on more clients, or shoulder more projects if you so wish. If you’re out of work, use the week after this lunation to search for any job you can. Employment could be scarce in a global pandemic, so of course you want the stars to be working in your favor.

(May 21 - June 20)

GEMINI October arrives with a vibrant full moon in your social sector on the first, Gemini. It’s likely you will be invited to an important event or else see the opportunity to expand your network. A friend may deliver some information that you didn’t expect near this time as well. With the sun moving primarily through your sector of fertility and love for most of the month, it’s clear you are ready to have fun and embrace passion. The new moon in this sector arrives on October 16, and both single and attached Geminis will bathe in this gorgeous energy. Romance could come your way if you’re looking, so absolutely connect with potential suitors. Committed Geminis could bring the spice back into their partnership or receive news regarding children or pregnancy. Last, if you’re a creative, use the inspiration of this lunation to harness ideas for your next great masterpiece. However, be cautious this month because Mars is retrograde the entire time. With so much nostalgic energy calling to you, you could cross paths or reunite with friends or connections from the past. Exes may even resurface, especially at the end of the month or in November.

(June 21 - July 22)

CANCER Career continues to be a major focus for you in October, Cancer. This is because you have harbored mighty Mars in this sector since the end of June (solar tenth house). It’s likely you have been hard at work launching important endeavors or hungry to find a position that will push you closer to your ambitions. However, with Mars spinning out of orbit this month, you could hit stagnation or obstacles at every turn. The full moon on October 1 highlights your achievements as well. Normally, this would be the perfect time for a major announcement, but you must be especially cautious due to the Mars retrograde. Still, it’s quite likely you will see an important victory, favorable press, or promotion come your way. Take it quickly, especially before the Mercury retrograde begins on the thirteenth. Your attention this month will also be on your home and family with the sun transiting here (solar fourth house). During this time you may attend to situations with your kin or parents. Some Cancers may also change residence, fix up their space, or handle roommate ordeals.

OCTOBER 2020

You are hungry to expand into new territory, Leo. As you enter October, a full moon in your growth sector delivers news regarding an opportunity to strike out in a new direction. For some, this will bring a significant turning point in an academic or publishing matter. For others, you may suddenly hear feedback regarding immigration, a visa, or a long-distance travel situation. Yet, with Mars fast asleep in this same sector, you may realize there are still some hurdles you need to overcome in the months ahead to get where you want to go. No matter what, though, use this energy to turn within and find the wisdom you seek there. Your mind will be especially active now as the sun continues to blaze on through your communication sector throughout much of the month. Now would be an excellent time to embark upon a new writing or speaking endeavor, such as reworking a website or being a guest on a podcast. However, with Mercury retrograde beginning on October 13, just be careful what you say. When the new moon arrives on the sixteenth, do your best to communicate as clearly as possible. Review any proposal or e-mail two or three times to make sure you aren’t missing anything.

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO The balance in your relationships is something you’ve been working through, Virgo, and this will be especially important in October. A full moon arrives on October 1, spotlighting your intimate relations—as well as possible relationship fears—so now is the time to address anything that needs to be adjusted in a business or romantic partnership. Also, with mighty Mars causing some frustration and possible conflict here due to his sleepy retrograde, be sure to approach it from a place of serenity rather than anger. Throughout the month, the sun heats up your finances, giving you opportunities to become a money magnet! New prosperity is likely this month, especially after the new moon on the sixteenth. If you’re looking for work, do so now. Also, a raise or large check may also come your way. Another thing to note this month, though, is that your ruler, Mercury, will be slowing down until he turns retrograde officially on October 13. Because of this, you may feel like you have less energy than usual and are more confused about how to move forward. Retrogrades are not here to punish you. Instead, they are here to help you slow down and fine-tune your strategy going forward. Watch your communications and double-check e-mails before sending them.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA Birthday season has arrived, Libra, and you’re ready for some muchneeded TLC! With the sun in your zodiac sign throughout the month, you are brighter than ever. This is the most important time of the year to make plans for the year ahead and create actions that will echo through every month to come. Choose what is most important to you and begin to build it, especially once the new moon in your sign arrives on October 16. The days after that open a door to your most sacred hopes and plans. Despite so much energy focused on you this month, a tremendous amount of your attention will be on your relationships as well. Earlier in the month, on the first, a full moon in your sector of partnerships reaches culmination. You may make an important decision regarding someone in love or business at this time. Usually this would be a wonderful moment for union and commitment, such as getting engaged or choosing to marry. However, with Mars asleep in this same sector of relationships, any union that becomes official or takes the next step now will likely ultimately lose steam and fail. Wait until later in the year for a better time. Mercury retrograde also begins this month, on October 13. Expect confusion and delays in the second half of the month.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO The universe is making it very clear that now is not the time to rock the boat, Scorpio, and you must prioritize rest and relaxation. The sun will be in your sector of healing throughout most of the month, and the new moon on October 16 encourages you to lie low, too. Also, your co-ruler, Mars is fast asleep and having nightmares in your work sector, showing that you may be frustrated with stagnation in your employment. The full moon on the first triggers this same sector of work, and while the other planetary action is telling you to wait, the full moon seems to be saying “Go!” At this time, you may finish up an important project on the job, take on more, or end or begin with an employer. It is also crucial to watch your health because this same zone can cause flare-ups if something is out of balance for you. Yet another cosmic trigger is telling you to wait as Mercury in your zodiac sign slows throughout the first weeks and finally turns backward on October 13. Don’t fight it, Scorpio. Trust the rhythm and flow rather than forcing it.

(November 22 - December)

SAGITTARIUS While October will bring headaches to many of the other zodiac signs, you, Sagittarius, should fare much better. With a full moon marking a culmination and turning point, you may choose to open your heart at this time. However, with Mars in weak orbit, do not become official, because your chemistry will die later. Instead, use this time to have fun! Single Sagittarius natives may still have an opportunity to find a great match, while committed ones can use this booster to improve their rapport. Another major factor this month will be your social life as the sun blazes a trail here. It’s likely you will hear from many friends and see your network expanding, especially after the new moon arrives on the sixteenth. Beware of secrets emerging that you hadn’t expected as Mercury retrograde causes confusion in the second half of the month.

(December 22 - January 19)

CAPRICORN Prepare to face important matters regarding your home or family throughout much of October as mighty Mars causes a ruckus as it moves backward in the sky. Some Capricorns may have difficulty with their kin or need to step in to aid someone at this time. Others could be trying to handle a domestic or moving matter to no avail. However, with the arrival of the full moon on October 1, it appears news will arrive that allows you to move your plans forward strategically. If you’ve been looking to change a lease or find the right living space, the time may finally come. If you’ve been hoping to be freed of a toxic roommate, this, too, may manifest. Despite such a focus on your stability, your ambitions are at an all-time high, with the sun lighting up your sector of achievements throughout much of the month. New job opportunities, a promotion, or increased responsibilities could now be on the table. You’re ready to show the world what you’ve got! The new moon on the sixteenth opens a door in your career that you’ve been hoping for, so don’t miss the opportunity to talk to those in authority who may help you get where you want to be.

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS In October, all Aquarians will feel that they have a deeply important message they wish to relay. However, with Mars retrograde occurring in your communication sector and Mercury retrograde beginning on October 13, it’s clear that you must review what you think before you say it. Otherwise it could—and likely will—be held against you. This month is absolutely not the time to sign any contracts if you can avoid them. However, as the universe can be tricky, a full moon on the first highlights a communication-related endeavor that you will quickly need to attend to. This could be a writing, speaking, or advertising venture. Sometimes contracts pop up despite the other planetary energy saying beware! If you must sign, though it isn’t advised, be sure to have an attorney or someone with experience also look it over. The sun marches through your expansion sector throughout most of the month, improving your luck with breaking into new territory. Also, a new moon arrives in this same zone on October 16. Some Aquarians could see a door open regarding an academic, publishing, media, or immigration matter. No matter what, seize the time while you can.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES Money is on your mind as you enter October, Pisces. A full moon on October 1 spotlights your income and could bring a raise, new job, or wellpaying client if you are freelance. This may arrive just in time as you have been having money come and go quite intensely since the end of June this year! Do your best to manage your finances as much as you can this month. However, you will also be focusing on the balance in your established partnerships, whether that is in business or love. If you’re requiring aid, you may see it arrive, especially after the new moon on the sixteenth. Be sure to know what you’re looking for, and work to show that you deserve everything you’ve requested. However, you will feel the month become even slower as the Mercury retrograde affects the second half of the month as well. This is okay because the sun will be moving into a more cerebral part of your chart, allowing you to do some deep introspection. Review what you have learned this year and where you still wish to go.
