Travel has always been something I had taken for granted. Whether a long-haul flight to the other side of the world, a scenic train journey through Europe, or a simple weekend away in a boutique hotel, the knowledge that I could pack a bag and head off at the drop of a hat was pleasantly reassuring. Since the COVID outbreak, however, the ability to move around and travel freely from one place to another has been virtually impossible. Even now, almost two years after the first case was identified in Wuhan, China, things are far from normal. At the time of writing, England still has over fifty countries on its red list, meaning they should not be visited except in the most extreme of circumstances. The red list includes Brazil, Philippines, Thailand and Tunisia, places which, ordinarily, would appeal to the average holidaymaker. Despite my love of travelling, my desire to stay safe meant I was happy to be cocooned at home with my husband and my dog for company. Admittedly, the lockdown lasted longer than any of us anticipated but health took priority over the desire to explore. In fact, only now, when things have started to resemble normality, do I realise how much I missed being able to traverse, to visit new cities and immerse myself in new cultures. After all, travel is not just enjoyable, it’s educational. Whilst we are now able to fly to some countries – subject to certain restrictions or requirements – my own prepandemic confidence has yet to return. Still, that doesn’t stop me thinking of the places on my wish list. Last week, I was dreaming of a trip to Greece and found myself watching videos of the so-called ‘cradle of Western civilization’. The whitewashed buildings, brilliant blue sky and mountainous backdrop looked absolutely stunning. I could almost taste the soft Feta cheese, the sun ripened tomatoes and the plump black olives. There’s something about the Mediterranean, the food always seems fresher, juicier and tastier than anywhere else. Of course, there’s more to Greece than the fabulous food. For a start, there are 227 different islands. Imagine all those beaches: soft white sand, crystal-clear water. I hate to mention food again but just think of the barbequed shrimp, fresh from the sea and bursting with flavour. Greece is also known for its historical landmarks. Depending where you visit, you can see the Acropolis of Athens, the Parthenon, and the Meteora rock formation with its Eastern Orthodox monasteries. In fact, Greece has

10

OCTOBER 2021

no less than 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites – perfect for Instagram junkies! Dreaming of Greece got me thinking of other places I’m desperate to explore. Pre-COVID, Rome was the 11th most visited city in the world. I’d like nothing more than to roam the streets, gaze at the Colosseum and dip my fingers in the Trevi Fountain. I’d go shopping at Piazza di Spagna, eat pasta in Piazza del Popolo, pizza in St Peter’s Square. Then I’d indulge in a deliciously authentic Tiramisu! Valencia is also high on my must-go-to list. I’ve visited the Spanish city twice before and am fortunate to have friends who live there. Those friends are now the proud parents of a baby son so I’m desperate to pay them a visit and meet their little boy. It helps that my friend is a chef and he makes the best paella in the world! Perhaps I’m a little biased, but trust me, it’s amazing! From a sight-seeing point of view, Valencia has something for everyone. Futuristic structures vie for attention with ancient architecture and there’s also a great choice of beautiful beaches (this may come as a surprise, for the city is not known for its seaside attractions). Also, with a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate, it’s perfect to visit any time of the year. I must confess, I do already have one short trip booked. When the opportunity arose to see Ed Sheeran live in concert, I didn’t hesitate to buy tickets. He’s performing in Copenhagen, the Danish city where another good friend of mine lives. I’ve been to Copenhagen once before but it was a very long time ago and my memories are sketchy to say the least. So, in August next year, I can reacquaint with The Little Mermaid, hang out at Hans Christian Andersen’s former abode and enjoy lunch next to the 17th century canal. It’s so good to have something to look forward to and, fingers crossed, I can enjoy the experience without the need for a facemask. To use one of Ed Sheeran’s song titles, that would be ‘perfect’. Needless to say, the place I have missed the most is Kuwait. I miss waking up every day knowing the sun is going to shine. I miss the spotlessly clean shopping malls, the endless choice of cuisine, and the long empty beaches. But most of all, I miss the people. I made some very good friends in Kuwait and I long for the time when travel is once again deemed safe and we can all reunite. Until then, I’ll continue to dream…

Food The best restaurants and must-try dining experiences in Richmond, VA It may come as a surprise that Richmond has a diverse food scene, but don’t skimp on these restaurants that should be on every foodie’s bucket list. Keep reading for the best dining recommendations. The Mantu: Speaking of diversity, broaden your palate by trying Afghan cuisine. Chef Hamidullah Noori began his chef’s career at age 18 in Kabul, Afghanistan. Since then, he has been featured on the culinary competition show, “Beat Bobby Flay.” A menu favorite is the Vegetarian Mantu: Homemade pastry shell stuffed with shredded butternut squash, chopped onion, cilantro and mint, topped with yogurt, sprinkled with dried mint and served with red kidney bean and tomato sauce. L’ Opossum: This quirky restaurant is idolized for its Frenchinspired cuisine. Don’t let the colorful light fixtures and thriftstore art-adorned walls fool you, the meal will be nothing short of decadent. Outstanding entrees include roasted rack of lamb atop a chimichurri sweet potato salad, garlicky kale, edamame succotash, grilled plum and a big round blackberry barbecue bordelaise. The Boathouse: When the city’s waterfront views collaborate with locally-sourced cuisine, The Boathouse is birthed. Situated right on the James River, house specialties include Mediterranean sea bass with couscous and Boathouse crab cakes with Yukon gold mashed potatoes. Soul Taco: A blend of fast, casual dining with an upscale, full-service experience and a fusion of traditional Latin American flavors and Southern comfort food is the heart of Soul Taco. The menu is constantly evolving to represent the landscape of the country, but with dishes such as cornmeal crusted catfish tacos and hush puppy nachos, the restaurant’s goal is to bring people together through a deep love of food and an admiration for cultures and their traditions. Everything is made in house and fresh to order. La Grotta Ristorante: Owner and Chef Antonio Capece was born in Potenza, Italy and has had a passion for fine cuisine since the age of 15. From homemade ravioli to homemade potato dumplings, Chef Antonio hand makes pastas and bakes breads all in the back of the house.

YOUR BREATH IS YOUR BEST FRIEND Fatema AlOthman

When I looked deeper into the technique of breathing and mental health exercises, and while watching one of the impressive videos that i like, the instructor said something like, “Your breath is your best friend. It will always be there for you. Learn to love it and honor it and harness its power.” This concept changed my life. I had never thought of my breath before. I breathe around 25,000 times a day, but I never think about it. At least I didn’t used to. With practice I have learned to harness the power of breathing and it helped me calm down and brought me more energy. What a gift God has given to us!

In terms of sports and health Breathing exercises will help strengthen the cardiovascular muscles and improve blood pressure. Regular deep breathing also decreases the chances of stroke. Deep breathing stimulates the vagus nerve which reduces the 'fight or flight' response. Regular breathing exercises can improve focus and concentration.

5 Amazing health benefits of breathing exercises - Improves immunity - Clams down anxiety - Improves digestive system - Gives healthy and glowing skin. - Good for cardiovascular health Now that I know and honor this powerful friend – my breath – I spend time every day focusing on her. Notice – does focusing on your breath help you in anyway? 20

In September 2021 I had a Cybersecurity conference in Arizona I was a VIP Speaker for and since I was so close to such sights as the Grand Canyon and the famous American Highway, Route 66. I decided to arrive a few days earlier to tour the state and sights along Route 66.

With over 2400 miles, US Highway 66 is one of the original highways in the United States. Running from Chicago to Santa Monica, it has been featured in popular culture in music and film. John Steinbeck's novel, The Grapes of Wrath, has the highway symbolize escape and loss.

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in 2021. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial Spending some time taking in the sights and sounds along this famous highway was such a great way to connect to a piece of America that not many take the time to see. I hope one day to travel the entire length of this highway, but for now the stretch through Arizona will have to make due.

26

OCTOBER 2021

Please introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Haifa Al-Anjari. Ever since I was a child, I have dreamt of making a mark of my own. I have carved a niche for myself in my chosen field of fashion and design by imparting the knowledge I have gained over the years. I always had a strong inclination towards design and fashion. Therefore, it was appropriate when I pursued Fashion Merchandising in 1991 as my subject for my Bachelor's degree. I have held various positions in my career spanning for almost two decades, from Assistant Professor to Department Head in PAAET and Heading many committees. Finally, I worked as Assistant Professor of fashion design at The College of Fashion Design Dubai since 2016 and was promoted to the dean in 2018. We need to constantly update ourselves in this continually changing dynamic world that brings in innovations and inventions in every sector. Fashion and desig is a similar field with the sky as the limit and there is so much, we need to achieve more to make it more sustainable for the years to come.

Tell us about your education?

I graduated in 1995 and immediately wanted to start my master's. I did both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees from prestigious Eastern Michigan, USA. I completed my master's in 1997 with a specialty in Textile. My passion and desire to understand fashion and designing better led me to go deep into the field, and I decided to pursue my Ph.D. in the area. My research directed me to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, affiliated with the University of Dundee in the United Kingdom. My understanding of the subject I adore the most, fashion and design, has made me do various projects I am incredibly proud of. In 2001, as one of my key achievements in Dundee, Scotland, while I was pursuing my Ph.D. I presented the "Images of Arabia" fashion show attended by Lord Provost Helen Right. During this period, I got a vast understanding of the intricacies of the fashion and textile field, which helped and motivated me to publish three books on the subject.

How did your first become involved in art and Fashion?

As a child, I loved making clothes for my doll and watching a TV program that teaches art and craft, and I fell so in love with the delicate work of sewing and needlework and painting and so on. Unfortunately, we didn't learn that much in schools as they substitute art classes with math and other major subjects, which was devastating for me. So, I taught myself art and crafts at home with the leftover fabrics and rags that I find here and there. Sometimes, I cut some of my clothes without my mom knowing to sew a dress for my doll.

What inspires you to be creative?

Even though we are living in Kuwait with no green landscapes, mountains and waterfalls we still have simple yet inspiring for me at least, like morning sunshine, Jazz music, and mental urge for striving.

When was the first time you remember realizing that you are a creative person? And how did you get started?

During the pandemic of Covid 19 and curfew, I was stuck with my Ex and his wife in the same house. This inspired me to start drawing on the piece of paper I collected here and there as I didn't have any materials of paints or brushes and canvases. I used to share my drawings through WhatsApp with my best friends and sisters, astonished by how creative I was. Once we were allowed to leave for shopping, I bought as many canvases, paints, and brushes as we didn't know when the next time would be a lockdown, and that is the short story of creativity as an artist.

How do you balance your time in the studio and other commitments? Honestly, I am a full-time artist. I spend most of my time in the studio as I feel so peaceful when holding the brush. My other commitment is teaching young girls everything I know about art and fashion design.

Can you tell us more about LEH Gallery? What is the concept behind it, and why did you choose this name? My dedicated team Nimbus Corporation, (son "Omar and his wife Farah), who are currently abroad in the United States, designed the whole organization to support me with launching my work. They are well known for their graphic design skills and social media management.

www.cpmagazine.net

27

Le H is the initial of my name Haifa and "Le" is an identification tool. Our new method of connecting innovation with art is the crucial aspect of Le H. We want the world to feel art, see it, and embrace it.

Can you tell us about your favorite piece and why?

Each piece has its own story and I am attached to them without any preference. Your question is like when you ask a mom about her favorite child and the answer is all of them.

Tell us more about your workshops?

My studio is located in one of the most beautiful locations in Kuwait with a panoramic view of the Arabian Gulf sea. I hang all my paintings on every wall available in the studio that sometimes I feel I am in a museum of art. I spend most of time in the studio as I feel so peaceful while painting and creating more artwork. In fact, when I am in my painting, I am not aware of what I am doing or what’s going in the world.

Which other artists do you admire?

My favourite artists are Frida Kahlo and Henri Matisse, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate the others. On the contrary I love and support every person who loves art even a little kid holding crayons in his/her little fingers.

Does your art convey a specific emotion or message? What does it express? Well most of my clients told me that my painting had a sad and wistful look especially the eyes go the portraits. The truth is when I painted most of my first collection I was under so much stress as I mentioned earlier so I guess it’s a natural way of expressing my feeling through the painting brush.

If you could change one aspect of our society through your work, what would it be?

Through art and design, we should teach the young generation in their early ages the global value to become kind with themselves, nature, and others. So, we can see a colorful future like a masterpiece of art. And paying attention to art classes in general education as these subjects are inspirational and highly important in shaping the character of the young generation to become great leaders.

What is your motto in life?

Follow your dream, believe in yourself, and don't give up.

What is your favorite color? Does this color describe you as a person?

That is the most challenging question you can ask an artist! I love all colors with all their shades and tints. There is no favorite colour per se.

What advice would you give for women and younger generation? Follow their dreams wherever that dream is.

What are your future projects?

I plan to open an art club for kids to teach them the beauty of art and design. Unfortunately, there isn't any attention to art and design in Kuwait.

Tell us about some of your other hobbies?

Traveling, boxing, squash, and salsa dancing are few of my favourite hobbies.

Your message for us at CP magazine?

What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

Thank you very much for your hospitality and special thanks to Ms. Fatima Al-Jutaili. I wish you more success for your magazine and keep up the excellent work of enlightening the society and the world.

What is your favorite accomplishment?

Fashion and Designing are a similar field with the sky as the limit there is so much, we need to achieve more to make it more sustainable for the years to come.

Unfortunately, we are living in a place where people don’t appreciate art or even artists. Most of the artists in Kuwait work individually. Also, the unavailability of good materials like paints and brushes, I usually order mine from abroad even though it’s more expensive When I quit my governmental job in my country and left to Dubai to explore my authentic self and looking for new opportunity which was very hard at the beginning but ended with the best experience of my life when I was appointed as 28

the dean of the college of Fashion and Design and led a great team with lots of potential.

Located between Albany and New York City is 700,000 acres of beautiful mountain scenery of the Catskill Park. The park is mostly New York state-managed forest preserve within the Catskill Mountains that sits west of the Hudson River and contains more than 30 peaks above 3,500 feet. It was settled by the Dutch and was used early on as a rural escape for the first vacationers out of New York City. Scribner’s Catskill Lodge, member of Design Hotels, was founded to welcome a new generation of urban explorers to the beautiful year-round destination of the Catskills. With thoughtful design, friendly service, and delicious food and drinks, the Lodge is the perfect basecamp for your escape to the outdoors. Since the 1800s, city-dwellers have been escaping to the Catskill Mountains for the fresh air and commanding views. On this site in 1881, the Hunter Mountain Prospect House was built, a grand hotel that could sleep hundreds, and had a reputation as a popular summer social center. As steamboat travel fell out of favor, travelers went elsewhere, and the Prospect House was lost to time. In the 1960s a new wave swept over the area. In January 1960, Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl opened and attracted a lively crowd to the slopes for winter sports and aprés-ski revelry. In the summer of 1969, 400,000 people gathered together at Woodstock in the Catskill Mountains for the pivotal event of the countercultural revolution. Around this time, an eccentric artist acquired the Scribner’s site with a vision to create a fantastical resort that captured the optimism and playfulness of that era. In 1966, the Scribner Hollow Motor Lodge welcomed its first guests. Known for its distinctive architecture, and decadent indoor swimming "grotto", the Lodge quickly gained legendary status. 32

Scribner’s took a late-modernist motor lodge and transformed it into a contemporary yet historically relevant retreat. Here, one still finds a brick road where long-ago visitors used to unload their cars. Set on the side of a mountain with sweeping views, the lodge and its 23acre site, less than a mile from Hunter Mountain, gleam with new splendor after thorough renovations under the direction of Brooklyn-based Post Company.

CityPages Magazine: What factors led to the launch of the Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants list? William Drew: Following the success of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants over the last 19 years and the establishment of both Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants and Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, 50 Best is launching Middle East & North Africa's 50 Best Restaurants to shine a much-deserved spotlight on the region as a world-class culinary destination. The launch of Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants will mark the first time since 2013 – when both Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants and Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants were established – that 50 Best unveils a new regional restaurants list and awards programme so this is hugely exciting for us at 50 Best and for the MENA region. CPM: What makes the culinary landscape in the MENA region so exciting? WD: Over the last decade or more, the region has attracted major international chefs to open high-profile restaurants, which has in turn led to the more recent rise of home-grown talent, now gradually coming to the fore. Equally, countries such as Lebanon, Morocco and Israel are steeped in sophisticated and wonderfully evolved food cultures of their own and we want all these countries and beyond to receive the recognition they deserve. Within the UAE, Abu Dhabi has been establishing itself as a culinary force for some time, with the launch of initiatives such as Abu Dhabi Culinary Season, the Emirati Cuisine Programme, and the Abu Dhabi Food Festival, providing broader cultural and hospitality experiences for both visitors and residents alike. This helped make it a positive choice to be the host city for 50 Best’s new regional restaurant awards programme. CPM: What impact do you expect the list to have on the region’s F&B industry? Especially in Kuwait? WD: The MENA region’s rich, diverse and delicious culinary portfolio will gain some of the global attention it surely deserves, and Kuwait will be an important part of that. We are confident that Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants will inspire people to travel from within the region and internationally to visit in order to explore the culinary gems put in the spotlight by the awards and its surrounding events programme. A series of live Chef Masterclasses will be open to food-loving consumers on a ticketed basis as part of the awards programme spotlighting local chef talent, the further details of which will be revealed in due course. CPM: What does It take to make it onto the MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants? WD: The ranking provides an annual snapshot of the opinions and experiences of regional experts, therefore if diners have been experiencing the outstanding characteristics of a restaurant, then it will be reflected in future results. What constitutes ‘best’ is up to each voter to decide; as everyone’s tastes are different, so is everyone’s idea of what constitutes a great restaurant experience. Of course, the quality of food is going to be central, as is the service – but the style of both, the surroundings, atmosphere and indeed the price level are each more or less important for each different individual. Restaurants do not have to fit a certain criterion. CPM: Can you give us a bit of information on the voting process and how it works? WD: The inaugural ranking for Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants will reflect the best restaurant experiences based on the votes of more than 200 voters, made up of anonymous restaurant experts (including chefs, restaurateurs, food/restaurant journalists and well-travelled gourmets) from 19 countries across the entire region. Members of the 50 Best organization do not vote and do not control the composition of the resulting list; that is the collective role of the voting Academy. This means that restaurants cannot apply to be on the list. Equally, no sponsor has any influence on the voting process. 40

AL HAMRA PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE LEGACY OF HIS HIGHNESS THE LATE AMIR OF KUWAIT,

SHEIKH SABAH AL AHMAD AL JABER AL SABAH

In commemoration of the first-year anniversary of the Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, and in honor of his exemplary works through the years, Al Hamra Real Estate Co. recently launched an exhibition at Al Hamra Shopping Center. The retrospective exhibition highlights His Highness late Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah’s life’s journey, some of his memorable milestones and recognizes his positive role as a humanitarian leader and as the ‘Dean of Arab diplomacy’ by displaying rare photographs and footages for visitors to explore. In collaboration with prominent local talent, Jassim F. AlNashmi, founder of Manmade Studio, designer, architect and artist, the brand identity and title of the exhibition is called ‫(تبصر‬Tabassar) or ‘Enlighten’, which was inspired by the memorable words of the Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah during one of his notable speeches, in which he reflected on the many blessings bestowed upon Kuwait and shared his gratitude to the Almighty for security, safety, stability, peace, tranquility, well-being and a good life. Al Hamra Real Estate in collaboration with Jassim F. AlNashmi started with the idea for the retrospective exhibition one year ago, soon after the demise of the beloved Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, by listening to his final public announcement which starts with the word ‫(تبصر‬Tabassar), which urges his children of Kuwait to not only observe what is happening in the world today, but also have an outlook on things to come. Pearls of wisdom which the Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah has reiterated in his

previous speeches. This led to the design of the title which takes the shape of the human eye, manifested through typography. The Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah proved to be the embodiment of ‫(تبصر‬Tabassar), who, through diligent leadership, practices, perseverance and care, fostered national prosperity and became a formidable pillar of the community. Hence, the exhibition pays tribute to the essence of the Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah’s legacy and brings to life his significant role in Kuwait’s development, and, at accelerating progress in the various sectors, shaping the country’s social and economic growth that is widely acclaimed and admired across the world today. To achieve a successful launch of the historical timeline dated from his childhood in 1929 until his demise in the year 2020 ( May his soul rest in peace) that chronicles his career and the proud heritage the Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah left his country and future generations, Al Hamra Real Estate Co. sought the expertise of renowned national talents - Engineer Maha Alessa - independent researcher and specialized museum educator, who was the curator of the exhibition, and Dr. Abdullah Al-Najdi, Assistant Professor in Modern & Contemporary History at the College of Arts from Kuwait University. The visitors of Al Hamra Shopping Center, after reading the exhibition statement” Enlighten”; enter the circular gallery space with rounded edges known as the ‘time capsule’, where they can take a stroll through time and

witness the Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah’s beginnings and lasting achievements and experiences locally, regionally, and internationally, highlighted in a chronological fashion and through walking in a circular motion to echo the movement of a clock dial. Each photo frame is made of smooth curves that feel light and graceful, treating the photos as precious artefacts, because they are rare and valuable photographs that need to be viewed with the utmost care and attention. The color palette is white and gold which represents purity and royalty. The exhibition will be live until the end of 2021. Visitors can browse through a select collection of memoirs and biographies on the Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, contributed by notable members of the society and authors such as Dr. Abdullah Al-Ghunaim, Abdullah Bishara, Abdullah Abbas Buwair, as well as by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). Sheikh Faisal Ahmad Al Abdullah Al Khalifa Al Sabah, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Hamra Real Estate Co. commented during the opening of the exhibition, that,”This is a rewarding moment for Al Hamra Real Estate Co., as we honor and mark the footsteps of our Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah (May God have mercy on him) who paved the way for a future that all generations can be proud of. This exhibition stands as a reminder of the powerful impact he had on the world around us and how his ambitions for a better Kuwait profoundly transformed the nation for many segments of society. The Late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah was a true visionary, pioneer and symbol of generosity who played a critical role in many movements and projects such as the pursuit for women’s rights to vote, formation of Kuwait’s foreign policy, Arab unity and philanthropic causes, that have left a dynamic impression everywhere.” “On behalf of everyone at Al Hamra Real Estate Co., I would also like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to those who contributed to the success of the exhibition, dedicated their resources and efforts, and shared in our vision to build an experience that celebrates the name and legacy of our Late Amir, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah. WHERE IS THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY GOING? Words: José Berrocoso

If things go well, we might be at the threshold of a new age of travel. Although COVID-19 variants may affect conditions, it seems only a matter of time before travelers in some parts of the world hit the road and take to the skies again, thanks to rising vaccination rates and manageable caseloads. Some countries have begun gingerly relaxing travel restrictions and reopening borders. A travel boom is looming. But is the industry ready? CityPages Magazine meets the industry leaders to learn much more about the new era in the travel industry.

CityPages Magazine: History has

shown us that travel is one of the world’s most resilient industries despite the challenges it has faced in the past. How can travel brands in the Middle East succeed in a post-COVID 19 world?

Hatem Chatter: Travel and tourism are among the most resilient

industries, and history has taught us that despite any challenge, will bounce back. The Middle Eastern travel business is leisure based. Despite any challenge, leisure travel usually bounces back first. Middle Eastern clients travel 4-5 times a year, excluding business trips, showing that travel is part of the culture. The good news is that there is a high take-up of vaccinations in Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain, with travellers from those regions, providing motivation for countries to open up to them. Additionally, Middle Eastern travellers love to share stories about their travels, influencing those around them to book trips to the same destinations. Travel brands can harness the power of storytelling to entice travellers. Since March 2020, almost 100% of Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) bookings have been for leisure travel. Quick weekend leisure trips are being taken nearly 2 times more in 2021 vs. 2019.

Isabel Tapp: Customers are now looking for authentic experiences

and this is what travel brands should be curating, combined with taking responsibility for the planet and giving back to the local environment. Offering locally sourced food, being mindful of health and wellness options and choosing the sustainable route as a priority.

Gustavo Egusquiza: The recovery will not be homogeneous for all the travel brands in the Middle East. For the travel industry it is time www.cpmagazine.net

49

to reevaluate the tourism landscape and to take the necessary steps to offer new products and enter new markets

CPM: In

what ways has the pandemic provided an opportunity to ‘reset’ the tourism industry?

HC: While we could not travel, I had regular conversations with many of our clients, who reminisced about what they missed about travelling. During that time, they started to plan and create lists of places they would like to travel to. Travelers are rediscovering the joy of traveling, while at the same time, service providers are rediscovering the joy of service. They are exploring ways in which they can be innovative and use technology to better accommodate traveller needs. Local travellers have awakened to, and are exploring, the beauty of their own countries and regions. LHW travellers booking within their own region has increased 64% since 2019. IT: The pandemic has given everybody time to focus on what is important to them and travel is high on a lot of people’s agenda. We live in a connected world where travel forms part of our day to day lives, enriching our lives with different cultures, landscapes, food and lifestyles. Business travel may reduce post-COVID, as we realise that a percentage of those business trips are not essential and can take place effectively over Zoom, whilst those essential business trips will be combined with an element of personal leisure, whether solitary or with family. Travel for leisure will be stronger than ever and we will see people taking longer trips in the future both to see family and friends as well as to discover new experiences. GE: The pandemic has provided the opportunity to the tourism industry to reflect on the sector´s competitive model and evolve towards more sustainable consumption and production models that can contribute to promote the circular economy and a healthier tourism industry in the long run.

How will travel and hospitality evolve postCOVID-19? What actions can travel brands take to prepare for the future?

CPM:

HC: Traditionally, our Middle Eastern clients are city-oriented travellers who enjoy shopping, as well as dining in restaurants and cafes. Over covid, traveller preferences evolved, and we noticed a trend in travel to resorts, this follows the trend noticed by my colleagues worldwide. Since 2019, LHW has seen a 2X spike in demand for beach, countryside, lakeside and mountain destinations. Additionally, there has been an 88% increase in villa and suite bookings, that has resulted in a 32% increase in ADR. Resorts were receptive to vaccinated travellers, and towns in the Maldives, Mykonos, the south of France, and the south of Spain enjoyed a lot of business from the Middle East. In the future, I believe travellers will enjoy a balance of both city and resort stays, while in the past, cities were more dominant for our Middle Eastern travellers. Based on this, both segments can be promoted together, providing travel brands with opportunities to collaborate, as they will have the potential in the future to secure the high interest of travellers. IT: Sustainability and climate change are growing in importance and travel brands will need to be mindful to ensure that they are adjusting their practices to achieve maximum sustainability and minimum impact on the planet. Single use plastic needs to be eliminated as quickly as possible and they need to look at giving back; planting trees, caring for the environment, supporting local farmers, stocking local produce and showcasing the heritage of their natural environment. GE: Brands will have to adapt to their new times and demands. Digitalization and the offer of new experiences and services is the key element to success in the next coming years. 50

OCTOBER 2021

CPM: How will our travel habits change? HC: Because of some of the reasons mentioned above, there will be

a healthier mix between cities and resorts. There will also be a greater appreciation for the gift of travel.

IT: We may travel less frequently, but for longer, combining business with leisure to maximise on a trip. Non-essential business trips will take second place to experiential adventures or travelling to see family and friends. We are yearning to start crossing off our bucket list, planning big adventures and experiences, not wishing to delay these trips any longer; revenge travel and bucket list trips will be high on people’s agendas.

GE: After the COVID, people seem to be able to be away from home longer. Moreover, thanks to the COVID a more conscious travel model will appear. The tourist will be more appreciative of their surroundings and local people and less reckless with their spending habits. CPM: What will travel look like this time next year? HC: We are developing positive momentum to achieve a healthy recovery

in 2022, as the revenue for 2021 has outpaced that of the previous year. Beginning in mid-June we have outpaced 2019 production levels by an average of nearly 10%. For the first time since the pandemic started, Leading Hotels’ revenue production has been on par with 2019, and it is encouraging to see a lift in international demand. Greater vaccination rates, the trend of leisure travel recovering faster than corporate, and the levels of wealth in this part of the world, with travel being a priority in how that wealth is spent, will speed the recovery.

IT: Providing countries around the world have succeeded in controlling the pandemic, we will be in revenge travel mode, looking to make up for the time and travels we have missed, travelling to see family and friends, as well as to make those bucket list trips; making sure we are accumulating as many experiences and memories as possible; it’s a big, beautiful world out there and we need to see it and experience it. GE: It is likely that normality will be recovered in most of the world. However uncertainty makes predictions difficult in the long run. All will depends on how this pandemic behaves in the next coming months. CPM: What are the new travel trends in the industry? HC: Middle Eastern business has traditionally been last minute, and we

expect that there will be a return to last minute travel, as we are seeing worldwide now. Travellers from this region plan and book for their trips when they are inspired to travel. IT: Less frequent, longer trips; combining business and leisure; sustainability and giving back to the environment; wellness both inside and out; a more relaxed take on luxury; experiences; health; culture; healthier and plant based foods, experiential dining experiences.

GE: There is a high demand in boutique hotels all over the world.

Moreover minimalism is going to be a huge a real travel trend and tourists will look for a more authentic approach when they travel abroad. Digitalization, more connection with the nature and avoiding crowded places are some of these new trends in the travel industry.

This month City Pages Magazine dives into the delicious Moroccan food with Chef Choumicha Chafay! City Pages Magazine: Moroccan Culture is

stunning, truly fascinating walking the rich streets in Morocco. Can you share with us some of your favourite things about Morocco?

Choumicha Chafay: I love the Morocan culture. It’s my identity, part of who I am as a person. I am mesmerized by our rich history, the brotherhood in the people of my country. Anything related to Morocco is dear to me, because we are such a vibrant country. Throughout my career and at the start, I have been lucky to participate in programs where the focus was on the Moroccan elements and influence: It could be cuisine, clothing, and architecture. For someone like me, who’s got a lot to thank my country for, I can't really say there is one thing that pleases me more than the next one. I guess, Morocco is love and everything about this gem of a country brings a smile to my face. CPM: How has the Moroccan influence shaped

you as a chef?

CC: There is famous proverb that says ‘A man is the result of

his environment.’ All what I'm today and that I have achieved is the result of my entire Moroccan heritage. The Moroccan cultural is a part of me and I was lucky to grow up in an environment where the culture was very present. Moroccan culture is one that is very rich but also very open, it is detailed but has place to accommodate diversity.

CPM: What are some of your favourite Moroccan

dishes/spices?

CC: At Bab Al Mansour, we use the best organic spices in the world but zafran or (saffron) is purely Moroccan. There are many more spices and a rich mix, but at Bab Al Mansour our food is mainly influenced by zafran. My favorite dish has to be the simplistic but very flavorful couscous. I think everyone who knows of Moroccan cuisine will have tasted this dish. It has a wonderful flavor of all types of vegetables used in the dish.

CPM: Bab Al Mansour is a fine-dining Moroccan

brand. What was your main focus for the menu?

CC: I focus on every minute detail – right from appetizers

platters like olives till the end of the meal where we offer freshly made bread with Moroccan tea, main course, salads and how we incorporate organic ingredients to prepare and season our salads. Everyone that walks into Bab Al Mansour feels the luxury vibe, they understand that it is a fine-dining restaurant. We must ensure we establish the specialty throughout the whole food experience. This includes the plates, the style, the setup, obviously the food and how we serve it.

CPM: The interiors of Bab Al Mansour evoke a

feeling of being in Morocco, while maintaining the luxe element. Did you have a vision in mind for this?

CC: Bab Al Mansour is an integrated Moroccan experience, 54

OCTOBER 2021

which means when someone visits Bab Al Mansour, they will truly feel at home as if in Morocco. You will feel like you’ve travelled to Morocco. Everything speaks Morocco – starting from our decoration to the marbles used, the style of the curtains, the music and our lovely staff – everything is authentically Moroccan. High-end sophisticated vibes inspires us and this reflects in our furniture and our set up; I’d say mainly inspired by the city of Fes (or Fez) in Morocco. The city is characterized by its palaces, palatial houses and the regal vibe. We wanted to depict the same luxury in Bab Al Mansour. This is why I say when someone visits Bab Al Mansour; they’ll feel like a stroll down this magnificent city of Morocco.

CPM: What is your mission with your cooking? How

do you want people to translate Bab Al Mansour's cuisine?

CC: My mission is to keep practicing, maintain and respect the quality of the Moroccan taste. I always work with the idea to reflect the authentic Moroccan taste in my cuisine, every dish that we serve at Bab Al Mansour. I want people to visit Bab Al Mansour and feel like they are eating in Morocco. I believe some chefs like to add a new twist to the dish like new herbs, spices just to bring some innovation and new layer to the taste but I prefer to stick to my authenticity and to keep the original taste. Saying so, I am eager to explore and combine and create fusions of flavor, but for the most Moroccan cuisine is so varied and rich that in it provides

a plethora of flavor for the food enthusiast. For sure, we are presenting our culture and our Moroccan luxury dishes at Bab Al Mansour, all I want them to know is that they are visiting a place, which keeps in mind the originality, and history of ancient Moroccan cuisine.

CPM: What plans do you have for Bab Al Mansour?

Do you curate recipes regularly and is there more on the charts?

CC: We would love to have another branch of Bab Al Mansour, in Dubai or in United Arab Emirates. For the recipes, we will keep our original menu with all Moroccan dishes. But we will be going diverse and adding dishes according to occasions like Eid, New Year and special seasons, all while keeping the simplistic authentic Moroccan taste in all dishes.

CPM: What's one tip you'd give to someone travelling to Morocco on a cuisine experience? CC: Someone travelling to Morocco for a true Moroccan experience

has to definitely visit many places to encompass the true diverse nature of the culture, especially food culture. There are many places like Tangier, Fez, Rabat and more and every place in Morocco has their own specialty, their own dishes, their culture and this is shown in the food and way of presenting food. I definitely suggest having someone around who knows the place and can take around for a truly iconic food journey, one that you will never forget. www.cpmagazine.net

Donut Fall in Love

Taste: My Life Through Food

Crossroads

by Jonathan Franzen

by Heather Morris

Actor Ryan Kwok is back in Toronto after the promotional tour for his latest film, a rom-com that is getting less-than-stellar reviews. After the sudden death of his mother and years of constant work, Ryan is taking some much-needed time off. But as he tries to be supportive to his family, he struggles with his loss and doesn't know how to talk to his dad—who now trolls him on Twitter instead of meeting him for dim sum. Innovative baker Lindsay McLeod meets Ryan when he knocks over two dozen specialty donuts at her bakery. Their relationship is off to a messy start, but there’s no denying their immediate attraction. When Ryan signs up for a celebrity episode of Baking Fail, he asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake and she agrees. As Lindsay and Ryan spend time together, bonding over grief and bubble tea, it starts to feel like they’re cooking up something sweeter than cupcakes in the kitchen.

'It's impossible to read this without becoming ravenous!' -Nigella Lawson 'It is as infectious as it is delicious, as funny as it is insightful. The only reason to put this book down, is to go cook and eat from it' - Heston Blumenthal From award-winning actor and food obsessive Stanley Tucci comes an intimate and charming memoir of life in and out of the kitchen. Before Stanley Tucci became a household name with The Devil Wears Prada, The Hunger Games, and the perfect Negroni, he grew up in an Italian American family that spent every night around the table. He shared the magic of those meals with us in The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the recipes and into the stories behind them.

Jonathan Franzen’s gift for wedding depth and vividness of character with breadth of social vision has never been more dazzlingly evident than in Crossroads. It’s December 23, 1971, and heavy weather is forecast for Chicago. Russ Hildebrandt, the associate pastor of a liberal suburban church, is on the brink of breaking free of a marriage he finds joyless—unless his wife, Marion, who has her own secret life, beats him to it. Their eldest child, Clem, is coming home from college on fire with moral absolutism, having taken an action that will shatter his father. Clem’s sister, Becky, long the social queen of her high-school class, has sharply veered into the counterculture, while their brilliant younger brother Perry, who’s been selling drugs to seventh graders, has resolved to be a better person. Each of the Hildebrandts seeks a freedom that each of the others threatens to complicate.

From international bestselling author Heather Morris comes the breathtaking conclusion to The Tattooist of Auschwitz trilogy. When they are girls, Cibi, Magda and Livia make a promise to their father - that they will stay together, no matter what. Years later, at just 15 years old, Livia is ordered to Auschwitz by the Nazis. Cibi, only 19 herself, remembers their promise and follows Livia, determined to protect her sister, or die with her. In their hometown in Slovakia, 17-year-old Magda hides, desperate to evade the barbaric Nazi forces. But it is not long before she is captured and condemned to Auschwitz. In the horror of the death camp, these three beautiful sisters are reunited. Though traumatised by their experiences, they are together.

Three Sisters

by Jackie Lau

OCTOBER 2021

Susan Orlean—the beloved New Yorker staff writer hailed as “a national treasure” by The Washington Post and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Library Book—gathers a lifetime of musings, meditations, and in-depth profiles about animals. “How we interact with animals has preoccupied philosophers, poets, and naturalists for ages,” writes Susan Orlean. Since the age of six, when Orlean wrote and illustrated a book called Herbert the Near-Sighted Pigeon, she’s been drawn to stories about how we live with animals, and how they abide by us. Now, in On Animals, she examines animal-human relationships through the compelling tales she has written over the course of her celebrated career.

New York Times bestselling author Laurence Leamer reveals the complex web of relationships and scandalous true stories behind Truman Capote's never-published final novel, Answered Prayers--the dark secrets, tragic glamour, and Capote's ultimate betrayal of the group of female friends he called his swans. There are certain women, Truman Capote wrote, who, though perhaps not born rich, are born to be rich. Barbara Babe Paley, Gloria Guinness, Marella Agnelli, Slim Hayward, Pamela Churchill, C. Z. Guest, Lee Radziwill (Jackie Kennedy's sister)-they were the toast of midcentury New York, each beautiful and distinguished in her own way. These women captivated and enchanted Capote--and at times, they infuriated him as well. He befriended them, received their deepest confidences, and ingratiated himself into their lives. Then, in one fell swoop, he betrayed them in the most surprising and shocking way possible.

by David Sedaris There’s no right way to keep a diary, but if there’s an entertaining way, David Sedaris seems to have mastered it. If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party—lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs. These diaries remind you that you once really hated George W. Bush, and that not too long ago, Donald Trump was just a harm less laughingstock, at least on French TV.

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Every since Black Panther (2018), Marvel has taken steps to craft villains that are not 100% evil. Villains which you can sort of see their perspective. This was handled well in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) with Thanos. Marvel again sticks to this formula with this film's villain and they have seemed to really nail the formula here with this film. Even as some special effects are not so great, some action sequences serves only as a car advertisement, and one missed opportunity story wise...the character development on display here is topnotch. Therefore this film earns a Writing a Movie RIGHT review.

Here comes the spoilers.

The film opens with the introduction to the world of the ten rings and Wenwu (Tony Leung) who has lived hundreds of years toppling governments and amassing a fortune. He searches for the entrance of an ancient village of Ta Lo where magical beasts live. He hopes to expand his power and in his search he meets Ying Li who is a protector of the village. They fight, but end of falling in love. He gives up his thirst for power and puts away the ten rings and tries to have a regular life with Ying and their two children. A rival gang to the Ten Rings comes to his home and kills his wife which sets him on a path of revenge for his loss. This loss will haunt him for years and become part of the breaking point of their once happy family. He ruthlessly trains his kids to become assassins. They both run away from home

and try to start their own lives, but get brought back home through a turn of events that again sets their paths to Ta Lo. The film manages to show backstories well and uses flashbacks quite effectively. What is missing is simply the moment Shan-Chi killed his target and decided to run away. I believe the best story thread was to have it be Katy's father. Then when he confesses he lied about not going through with the assassination hit, he also has to reveal to Katy that it was her father. That would have added a layer of complexity to the story. Then play with the theme of we are who we choose to be and forgiveness. Which the films nails with the father and son dynamic. It just needed to be reflected in all aspects and character relationships. Yet this doesn't mean the film is not already a solid film. The only things that distract from the story line is the subpar special effects in certain sequences, and the worst ever car advertisement placement of the BMW they choose from a garage full of tremendous cars. Then the forest chase scene only serves as a advertisement for BMW. Just a waste of time. If you can overlook that, the rest of the film moves at a lightning pace. A better training montage would have helped a bit, but perhaps I am being too critical. The cameos are well done and wonderful to see the humor on display. I am looking forward to where they take this character next, but I welcome the character development and complexity.

100 YEARS OF MAYBACH AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING: WORLD PREMIERE OF THE LIMITED ANNIVERSARY EDITION

"EDITION 100"

"What is good must also be beautiful." This was the credo of Wilhelm and Karl Maybach at the beginning of the 20th century. Father and son were regarded as gifted designers, trailblazers of automotive luxury and pioneers in matters of style. With a simple-sounding formula, they created highly complex things: perfection and craftsmanship paired with innovation, both technically and in terms of workmanship. This is what the name Maybach stands for to this day. The Mercedes-Maybach brand continues to develop, with more models – soon also electric. At the IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich, Mercedes-Maybach presented the "Concept EQS" and thus gave a preview of the first fully electric series model from 2023. The SUV will be based on the modular architecture for luxury - and premium-class electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Maybach is presenting the "Edition 100" to mark its 100th anniversary. A special edition of the current S-Class and GLS models, each limited to 100 units. The special series can be ordered from the fourth quarter of 2021. Wilhelm Maybach, born in 1846, was a close companion of Gottlieb Daimler and initially worked for Daimler-MotorenGesellschaft. Among many innovations, he developed the first Mercedes, which dominated the Nice Race Week in 1901. This success earned him the honorary name "Roi des Constructeurs" – King of the Constructors. He and his eldest son 60

OCTOBER 2021

Karl combined progress with form: They wanted to create "the best of the best". "I think about it around the clock, a constant impulse: the perfection of the technology," said Wilhelm. Maybach Motorenbau GmbH presented the first massproduced car at the motor show in Berlin in September 1921. The W 3 model resembled a moving work of art: the first German production car with four-wheel brakes, epicyclic gear system and an interior with the finest materials. The audience was thrilled, a legend was born. The magazine "Motor" wrote: "A new star in the automotive firmament is beginning to shine." In the 1920s and 1930s, Maybach became an expression of character and social position, and the epitome of technical and craftsmanship refinement – in short, custom-made luxury. From then on, kings, industrialists and artists were chauffeured in the stately limousines and majestic Pullman sedans, and travelled the world in chic coupés, cabriolets and roadsters. Every Maybach model is uniquely equipped. Precision meets glamour. An Indian maharajah even had his limousine decorated with gold and rubies in 1928. After the death of Karl Maybach in 1960, Daimler-Benz AG took over Maybach Motorenbau GmbH In 2002, MAYBACH was revived as an independent brand: until the beginning of 2013, legendary vehicles like the Maybach

57 and Maybach 62 as well as the Maybach 62 Landaulet were delivered to customers all over the world. Again, automotive excellence was the driving force for engineers, designers and customers alike. Mercedes-Maybach has been a Mercedes-Benz brand since 2014. In addition to the standard Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and GLS models, the brand is also launching the S 600 Pullman as well as limited-edition special models such as the S 650 Cabriolet or a G 650 Landaulet. The core markets are China, Russia, South Korea, the USA and Germany. Each model follows the brand's tradition of creating the "best of the best" and is made in consultation with customers at the Center of Excellence in Sindelfingen near Stuttgart. On request, the vehicles can also be individualised with attention to detail by the specialists in the Mercedes-Maybach Manufaktur programme: craftsmanship and perfection at the highest level. "It's about the passionate combination of every detail, no matter how small, that makes a luxury car a Maybach – all in combination with state-of-theart technology from Mercedes-Benz. Every Mercedes-Maybach stands for Sophisticated Luxury in all its facets – for our customers who are looking for something very special," says Philipp Schiemer, Head of Top End Vehicle Group Mercedes-Benz AG and CEO Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

New models for real enthusiasts – Mercedes-Maybach launches the "Edition 100"

To mark its centennial, the brand continues its journey towards maximum individuality, independence and comfort with two high-tech models. The top-class GLS SUV with a V8 engine and 557 hp (NEDC combined fuel consumption: 12.0 l/100 km | combined CO2 emissions: 275 g/km)[1] combines a sporty appearance with the luxury of a sedan: it is 33 centimetres higher than the classic sedan, offers a uniquely generous interior with 1.10 metres of legroom and air suspension. The interior is soundproofed and adorned with the finest leather. Electrically extendable running boards ensure maximum comfort when getting in and out. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class luxury sedan with a V12 engine and 612 hp (NEDC combined fuel consumption: 14.1-13.3 l/100 km | combined CO2

emissions: 322-305 g/km)1 is the perfect chauffeur-driven sedan. Equipment highlights include the noise-insulated first-class rear compartment with Burmester 4D surround sound system, heat and massage functions for the seats and high-tech screens for infotainment. Compared to the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class, the model has an 18 centimetre longer wheelbase and is equipped with all-wheel drive for the first time. Both models are now being celebrated in the most beautiful way in a refined "Edition 100" limited to 100 units each: characteristic Maybach hallmarks such as the impressive radiator grille bear the brand emblem. The S-Class and GLS are hand-painted in the same two tones – high-tech silver/ nautical blue - and feature a special design of leather interior in designo crystal white/silver grey pearl. The brand logo including the inscription "Edition 100" adorns the C-pillar (S-Class) or D-pillar (GLS), various stowage compartments and the illuminated panels in the interior. The "Edition 100" lettering also adorns the hub caps. The forged wheels of the GLS and the wheels of the S-Class also shine in a new grey finish. A car cover with the iconic double M as well as a fine handmade case made of soft crystal white or black leather in file size - made to store keys and papers - further underline the exclusivity of the edition. In keeping with the anniversary edition, Mercedes-Maybach's long-standing partners are also designing strictly limited special series: Licensing partner Maybach Icons of Luxury, for example, offers a diamondstudded fountain pen from the Maybach the Peak collection. The "Edition 100" will be available at dealers in the first markets from the beginning of 2022, with other markets following in the course of the year. Orders for the limited special series will be accepted from the fourth quarter of 2021. www.cpmagazine.net

OMEGA REVEALS THE SECRET OF JAMES BOND'S WATCH

The world’s favourite spy is back, as No Time To Die arrives in cinemas across the globe. While the details of 007’s latest OMEGA timepiece were unveiled at the end of 2019, OMEGA is now proving that there’s more to this Diver 300M than meets the eye! During the mission, a coiled mechanism is fitted to the underside of the watch, creating a “limited radius electromagnetic pulse.” Thanks to the ingenious work of Q, this clever addition helps 007 to short out any circuit on a hard-wired network. The watch proves to be a useful tool for 007 in the film, and in one scene, James Bond shares his own admiration with Q by saying, “just showed somebody your watch. It really blew their mind.” It’s a special piece of movie-making excitement, yet in true life, the technical capabilities of the watch are not too far from OMEGA’s real watchmaking magic. Like almost all of OMEGA’s mechanical timepieces today, the genuine Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition is Master Chronometer certified, meaning that it has been tested and approved at the Swiss industry’s highest standard of precision, performance and magnetic-resistance. Built with ingenious OMEGA technologies, including a Co-Axial escapement, a silicon balance spring, and other non-ferrous materials, the watch is able to resist magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss (similar to that of an MRI scanner). Although customers who wear this watch may not be expecting to save the world, this level of anti-magnetic technology is the perfect protection against every-day magnetic fields, such as mobile phones and laptops, which can disrupt a mechanical watch and stop it from working. Once you’ve seen it on screen, we suggest you make it your own mission to try this watch on your wrist. The Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition has been crafted in OMEGA’s own laboratory from lightweight Grade 2 titanium, with a “tropical” brown dial and unique military markings. It’s available to own on a titanium mesh bracelet or a striped NATO strap. 62

Kuwait is considered one of the global leading countries for the data consumption in the 4G era due to high penetration of Mobile Broadband and Smartphones, HD video streaming, social media exploration, e-commerce services, online gaming, and other mobile applications which become part of consumers’ daily routine. Subscriber behavior have introduced new challenges related to high growth in data demand, seamless experience everywhere making 4G network congested and difficult to match the market demand growth. stc has become one of the global leaders by launching nationwide 5G network in Kuwait to provide the state of art services to its subscribers. Through the 5G network, stc plans to pave the road to launch new services and products to its consumers, and explore new use cases to wide-range of enterprise customers. stc’s well-timed 5G service launch helped it to serve its subscriber consumption of high data growth due to sudden lockdown of offices, schools and commercial areas during the Covid-19 pandemic. stc’ 5G network has been supporting the seamless transformation of work and study from home by providing 5G packages at 4G rates, and also providing new services like 5G Dedicated Line, 5G LIVEBUS, and cloud based services using the key 5G technology as a platform. stc being the digital leader has committed to provide innovative services and platforms to customers, enabling the digital transformation in Kuwait, announced the successful commercialization step of implementing endto-end 5G Stand Alone network (5G SA) as the 2nd most disruptive development of the comprehensive 3GPP 5G compliant standard network and successfully accomplished the widest network coverage using 5G Sub3GHz which is the 1st of its kind in the Middle East region. The videos were posted on Porsche ‘s local and international social media channels and shared many times, showing how five Kuwaiti talents comprising Yahya Jeragh, custom woodworking artist, Louay Bahman, automotive enthusiast, Yara Al-Hunaidi, equestrian champion, Abdullah Al-Askari, sports and fitness entrepreneur and swimming champion, Zain Alabdeen Qali, connect their respective skills and talents to the Porsche Taycan and everything it embodies.

It is the second time Porsche Centre Kuwait has collected the esteemed award since its introduction in 2017. The nominations focused on engaging people with the allnew Taycan, Porsche’s first fully electric sports car. The team of Porsche Centre Kuwait developed the best campaign which saw respected Kuwaitis who have excelled in a number of disciplines in the sporting, arts and cultural communities, tell their story of willpower, ambition and talent, linking them to the Taycan’s unique features.

“This combined effort from everyone at Porsche Centre Kuwait to create such a successful and emotive campaign is yet more evidence of the dedication and commitment shown by our dedicated team. None of this however, could have been possible if it were not for the strong support and loyalty of our customers,” Hany Marie said.

Hany Marie, General Manager at Porsche Centre Kuwait, said the campaign carries the personal touch and the emotion that Porsche owners already relate to and introduces it to the exciting new Taycan that will propel Porsche into the future: “Using the hashtag #WhyOurSoulsConnect, this is all about passion and striving in your own field of work. By choosing an artist, a horseback rider, a racing driver, a swimmer and a fitness professional, we see the passion that has lifted them to their respective heights and how that influences every other part of their day and ultimately relates to their love of a sustainable future that the new Taycan can deliver.” ”We are exceptionally proud to win this award for a second time and as our customers already know, they can rest assured that Porsche Centre Kuwait is always looking for new innovations and initiatives to create engaging content that is attractive to our customers and fans and connects the Porsche values with their lifestyle.” The #WhyOurSoulsConnect campaign was judged based on the creativity of the content, innovation in the experiential marketing strategy, effectiveness of the campaign in enhancing public awareness and its contribution in increasing brand equity. The Marketing Innovation Award also factors in efficiency and quality. Markus Peter, Marketing Director at Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, congratulated the team: “The launch of the brand’s first fully electric vehicle required a break with traditional ways of communication to create wider awareness for our E-Performance programme and reach new target groups. The team at Porsche Centre Kuwait created an engaging campaign that linked the talent and ambition of individuals with the features of our Taycan, a benchmark model at the forefront of electric sports cars for everyday usability.”

HOROSCOPES (March 21 - April 19)

(July 23 - August 22)

ARIES

LEO

Prepare to review your most important relationships throughout October, Aries. With so much planetary activity standing across the sky from you, it’s clear that you’re set to make long-term plans with a significant partner in business or love. With the sun, Mercury, and Mars focusing you on teamwork, you’re likely eager to see things click along. However, Mercury is retrograde in your solar seventh house through most of the month, so you could find that you just can’t see eye to eye and come to an agreement. The new moon on October 6 could give you an opportunity to renegotiate and discuss other ideas, which would ultimately help you move forward once the retrograde wanes toward the end of the month. The most important full moon of the year for you appears on the twentieth because it falls in your zodiac sign. Within days of this lunation, you could find that you reach a culmination regarding a major personal goal or project. Step into your power. Your time has come.

(April 20 - May 20)

TAURUS October encourages you to truly assess your professional life, Taurus. With so much planetary activity heating up your solar sixth house of employment, it’s clear that you are hard at work on the job, taking on more projects, and collaborating with many people. The new moon on October 6 adds even more responsibility to your shoulders, but as the mighty Bull, you handle it well. However, Mercury, our cosmic messenger, will be causing confusion, delays, and stagnation in this same sector of the sky, so while you’ll be firing on all cylinders to get things done, there appears to be something amiss. Do your best to focus and take your time rather than racing along and doing anything sloppily. Pluto, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury all go direct by mid-month, further emphasizing that very soon all of the stars will be on your side to help you truly make your mark in your industry. Success and power could certainly smile on you, but it’s crucial that you fine-tune your plans and projects to be just right.

(May 21 - June 20)

GEMINI With your ruler out of sync through most of October, Gemini, you could feel that nothing is moving smoothly. Mercury retrogrades hit you especially hard, and this one in particular falls in your solar fifth house. This means that you could be experiencing miscommunication or confusion around matters of love, creativity, expression, hobbies, or children. While our cosmic messenger stations direct on October 18, you could still feel foggy until the end of the month. Despite this, mighty Mars energizes this sector with passion all month, and a new moon also appears here on the sixth. Even if it feels like you’re taking two steps forward and one step back, know that the universe just wants you to be truly happy. Venus dances across the sky from you for most of the month, beginning on October 7, adding even more sweetness to your relationships. With such an emphasis on your solar fifth and seventh houses, you’re likely to feel that you’re dancing with a twin flame at this time, or at the very least you have a high likelihood of crossing paths with one.

(June 21 - July 22)

CANCER October could feel especially slow for you, Cancer. Yet as you progress through the month, several planets (Pluto, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury) awaken and bring more speed back to your life. The Mercury retrograde phase will be the most noticeable for you because it backspins in your solar fourth house until October 18. You might be experiencing confusion or delays around family, domestic, or real estate matters. However, with Mars energizing this sector all month and a new moon on the sixth giving you even more motivation to get your ducks in a row, know that you can still make things happen if you focus on taking your time. Romance is sweet for you with Venus dancing through your solar fifth house until October 7, so use the early part of the month to chase your heart’s desire. Mars ignites this sector at the tail end of the month, starting on the thirtieth and for the weeks ahead. This adds more fuel to the fire of your soul.

OCTOBER 2021

Your ideas are of vital importance to you in October, Leo. With the new moon, Mercury, and Mars drawing significant attention to your solar third house, it appears you could be hard at work on a writing, speaking, advertising, or contractual matter. This might manifest in yet another way, such as a great deal of short-distance travel, especially with a partner or to see a sibling. The new moon on October 6 propels you to take action, yet with Mercury retrograde also spinning in this same solar third house, expect delays, confusion, or frustration. Double and triple everything until our cosmic messenger awakens on the eighteenth, and most certainly wait to sign contracts until after that point in time. Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter also shake off their slumber this month, ensuring that the pace of life will quicken quite rapidly as you inch toward November.

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO October could be riddled with challenges as you do your best to dance out of the line of fire, Virgo. You’re especially affected any time your ruler Mercury goes through a retrograde phase. This month, it’s backpedaling in your solar second house of income and finances, so you could be noticing delays with checks, confusion around money, or uncertainty regarding your job. However, with a new moon bringing a breath of fresh air to this same arena on October 6, and mighty Mars sizzling through here the entire month, know that you should still be able to power through if you keep yourself focused. If you’re in the midst of making a major purchase or taking on a large expense, it would still be wise to wait until after Mercury awakens on the eighteenth. Truth be told, the closer you step toward November, the faster the pace of life moves as Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter turn direct by that date too.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA Life could feel especially confusing this month, Libra, as if you’re fired up and excited about a fresh start yet keep running into little hiccups and challenges. Most importantly, it’s birthday season as you begin the month. The most significant new moon of the year for you appears on October 6, opening a doorway for you to assert yourself and reach toward a very personal hope, goal, or dream. Mighty Mars is also powering through your zodiac sign until the thirtieth, bringing you ambition, energy, and strength. You feel eager to show the world what you’ve got and push toward what makes you happiest. However, your mind could be second-guessing everything you think and you might be plagued with delays and frustrations because Mercury moves retrograde in your zodiac sign too. This phase continues until October 18, and very quickly thereafter you’ll feel the fog start to clear.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO Listen to your intuition this month, Scorpio. The universe is speaking directly to you. Your dreams will be extremely vivid and intense in October with so much energy in your solar twelfth house. Mighty Mars, your co-ruler, is bringing energy here, showing that you might be busy hustling on a behindthe-scenes project or working on something in solitude. You could be doing your best to make sure all the pieces are in place and everything is perfect to debut when Mars enters your sign on October 30. Next month will be wild, so it would be best to use October to create your ultimate strategy. A new moon falls in this same sphere on the sixth and can help you to lie low, rest, recharge, and assess your mental health. Sweet Venus journeys through your zodiac sign until October 7, so the beginning of the month would be an auspicious period to indulge in some TLC and pleasure. Romance could also be especially sweet at this time.

(November 22 - December)

SAGITTARIUS Of all the zodiac signs, you truly enjoy October the most, Sagittarius. With so much energy focused in your solar eleventh house, you’re feeling more popular than ever! As mighty Mars blazes a trail through this sector, you could be especially focused on having fun with friends and attending many joyful celebrations. You’re in a social peak at this time, so while you’re likely circulating among many acquaintances from the past, you’re also probably meeting just as many new ones. The new moon on October 6 can be a lovely moment to catch up with and grow closer to someone you deeply care about. Also, someone in your network might reach out to let you know that they’re pitching you for an important opportunity because they believe you’d be perfect for it. You could feel extremely grateful and euphoric. Mercury is retrograde until October 18, showing that there’s a major focus on past connections reaching out to you and congratulating you about a recent success. If there’s anyone you’ve lost touch with but want to rekindle the connection—perhaps an acquaintance you’ve always wanted to get to know better—do so in the early part of the month.

(December 22 - January 19)

CAPRICORN Your ambitions are especially important to you in October, Capricorn. With mighty Mars bringing a surge of energy to your solar tenth house all month, you’re surely hard at work knocking out important milestones and projects in your professional life. Many awards, achievements, or opportunities could be presented to you at this time. A chance to rise much higher in your industry could manifest in the days following the new moon on October 6, yet with Mercury retrograde in this same sphere until the eighteenth, it could be in regard to a previous opportunity or professional contact from the past. Mercury retrograde could certainly create some delays or confusion around your professional life this month, though, so it would be wise to postpone making any important decisions, launching any new endeavors, or signing any contracts until later in the month. Also, with Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter taking their time to awaken, you could truly feel the speed of life quicken toward the end of October.

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS October could be pushing you to pursue new horizons, Aquarius, but then making you question which direction to go! With so much planetary energy in your solar ninth house of expansion, you could be deeply focused on an academic, spiritual, or intellectual pursuit. Contractual and legal matters may also be consuming your mind. However, if you’ve been eager to embark on international business or travel or even immigration, October could provide you with some opportunities. The new moon on October 6 and mighty Mars powering through this same sector all month can give you the gusto to get things done and take action. Yet with Mercury retrograde in this same sphere until the eighteenth, you might be feeling uncertainty or facing delays around any of these matters. It would be best not to make any major decisions until after that date, if possible. Also, with Saturn and Jupiter awakening in your zodiac sign by mid-month, you’ll feel more at ease and clearheaded the closer you get to November.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES October could focus a great deal of your attention and time on financial matters, Pisces. With so much planetary activity taking place in your solar eighth house of shared assets, you could be facing a major expense or purchase this month. On the other hand, you might be busy tackling a loan, debt, venture capital, or settlement. A flurry of paperwork could consume you, but with Mercury retrograde in this sphere, it would be ideal if you didn’t sign on the dotted line, make major agreements, or lock down purchases until it turns direct on October 18. The onset of the month could feel quite slow but gain in forward momentum as you inch toward November as Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter all awaken in October. The new moon on the sixth can surely help you find more clarity amid the initial Mercury retrograde storm, though.
