BUREAUCRACY

‘Bureaucracy destroys initiative. There is little that bureaucrats hate more than innovation, especially innovation that produces better results than the old routines’ - Frank Herbert.

iving in a country where most of its government organizations are known for their overly bureaucratic procedures is a big challenge to an entrepreneur and it is one of the biggest problems facing them when establishing their own business. So if you are an entrepreneur implementing necessary processes and procedures for your business in a Bureaucratic organization and are complaining of it; or it's preventing you from going one step further, then let me tell you the truth. This is one of the early difficult stages that you are going to face in your start-up journey and it's not the end. It's impossible to avoid it. It is part of the law but it shouldn't stop 12

‘HUNGARY’ FOR MORE

T

Gill Sherry

o say I’m a huge Robbie Williams fan would be an understatement. Some would call it an obsession but I wouldn’t go quite that far. Even in my early twenties, when he first hit the big time with Take That, I drew the line at loitering outside hotels hoping to catch a glimpse of my favourite boy band heart throb. I left that to the younger, somewhat hysterical teenagers. Having said that, I will admit to seeing him perform live on seven separate occasions in five different countries (excluding the various Take That concerts I should probably also admit to). So, when an opportunity presented itself to see him in Budapest, I didn’t need asking twice. Witness my favourite singer performing live in a country on my wish list? Yes please!

A short walk along the river brought me to a curious ground level monument. Sixty pairs of shoes, sculptured from iron, decorate the embankment. They are accompanied by a plaque with the words ‘To the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross Militiamen in 1944-45’. Candles and flowers had been laid between the shoes in a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives during World War II. It is probably one of the most moving tributes I have ever seen.

I had two full days to occupy myself before the main event so, map at the ready, I set out to explore. My hotel was situated on Margaret Island, a tranquil setting in the middle of the Danube, connected to the mainland by bridge. With medieval ruins, dancing fountains, a Japanese garden and huge outdoor swimming pools, it was an ideal base for my four day trip.

A more recent addition to the city’s skyline is the Budapest Eye. Europe’s largest Ferris wheel has 42 gondolas each offering glorious views and the chance to see the city from a new and different perspective. It was a fun way to spend ten minutes and ideal for a selfie or two!

Continuing my journey into Central Pest, my eyes were immediately drawn to St. Stephen’s Basilica. Two large bell towers guard the giant, central dome of this grand structure, the most important church building in Hungary. The views from the circular viewing platform surrounding the dome were nothing I’d never been to Hungary before and I was looking forward to short of spectacular and provided photo opportunities galore. seeing what Budapest had to offer. From what I understood, it Inside the church itself a more reverent mood ensued as visitors was steeped in history and, sitting on the banks of the Danube, admired the statues, sculptures, paintings and, arguably the was a beautiful city to boot. most impressive of all, the dome itself.

A leisurely stroll from the island, across Margaret Bridge, led me to the Hungarian Parliament. This magnificent building stands proud on the bank of the Danube and is breathtaking in both size and beauty. Understandably, it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in Budapest and being the tallest building in the city, dominates the skyline. 14

SEPTEMBER 2017

The following day, I took a boat taxi to the Castle District. It was my intention to ride the funicular to the top of Castle Hill but seeing the queue, I decided to take the steps; not the easiest of climbs on a hot day but I was rewarded with refreshments at the top. A giant ornamental gateway leads through to the Royal Palace, also known as Buda Castle. Those fortunate enough to time their trip correctly can witness the Changing of

specific song, Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ was particularly inspiring and it was this song he chose to sing with his father whilst sitting beside him on a sofa in the middle of the stage. It was quite an emotional spectacle. His encore consisted of two of his most successful hits – ‘She’s The One’ and ‘Angels’ – as well as the old Sinatra favourite ‘My Way’. Not many pop icons could get away with wearing a skirt, riding atop a giant boxing glove and crooning along with their father. Robbie, however, didn’t just get away with it; he nailed it!

the Guards but even without this ceremony, there’s plenty to see. The Palace is home to the National Gallery and Budapest History Museum although I suspect most visitors, myself included, are more interested in the view. The viewing terrace of Fishermen’s Bastion is nothing short of spectacular. Under the shadow of Matthias Church, another stunning Roman Catholic Church, the Bastion’s seven towers and countless arches afford panoramic views across the Danube towards Pest, Margaret Island and Gellért Hill. If you can tear your eyes away from the vista, the towering sight of Matthias Church from street level is just as impressive. With light reflecting from the stainedglass windows and beautiful multicoloured glazed roof tiles it’s certainly a vision to behold. Conscious of the time, I made my way back to the hotel. It was time for Robbie! He was performing at the Groupama Arena, an outdoor stadium and the home of Ferencvárosi Torna Club. It was a short taxi ride from the hotel but traffic was understandably busy. The driver kept me (and himself) amused with various Robbie Williams music videos. Personally, I would have preferred that he kept his eyes on the road! My eyes, upon arrival at the venue, were immediately drawn to the impressive stage set; the perfect backdrop for what promised to be a memorable show. The support act was Erasure, a British pop duo who first found fame in the mid eighties. As support acts go they were pretty good, particularly as I was able to remember, and sing along to, most of their hits. As the 9pm show time edged closer, the stadium began to fill and the crowd impatiently waited for their hero. The show opened with his own personal anthem ‘God Bless our Robbie’, a self-mocking script earning him applause and respect in equal measure. When he finally graced the stage (in a skirt!) he launched into the title track of the tour, ‘The Heavy Entertainment Show’ before following up with his customary ‘Let Me Entertain You’. For the next ninety minutes, he did just that. From old favourites to popular cover songs, to early Take That chart toppers, he treated his audience to a range of hits designed to please all – not an easy task considering the diversity of the crowd. He also dedicated his version of ‘Freedom’ to the late, great George Michael.

I woke the next morning with aching feet and a hoarse voice; all that singing and dancing had taken its toll. However, there was still more to explore so after a hearty breakfast, I once more headed off with my map. I hoped to find my way to Gellért Hill, the spectacular backdrop to both Liberty and Elizabeth Bridge. The Liberation Monument stands proud at the top of Gellért Hill. It was set up to commemorate the liberation of Budapest by the Russian Army in 1945 and was later altered to recognise Communism’s fall. The monument is visible from miles around along with the Statue of St. Gellért. Sadly, I didn’t get to see either. Well, not close up anyway. In need of retail therapy – and a compulsory souvenir of my visit – I opted to browse the many shops in Central Pest instead. I was working on the theory that it’s always a good idea to leave something for a later date. Knowing that there’s an area left undiscovered gives me the perfect excuse for a return visit. My final evening in Budapest was spent back in the Castle District. As the sun begins to fade the city literally lights up and those breathtaking daytime sights become even more magical after dark. Churches glow orange, the Ferris wheel twinkles white and the Parliament Building is reflected perfectly in the Danube. I enjoyed dinner under the stars followed by a stroll through the quaint, hidden streets; a taste of local life in the depths of a tourist haven. It was pleasantly peaceful, quite a surprise considering Budapest is one of the most densely populated cities in Europe. This particular area is home to a Starbucks, Jamie’s Italian and Hilton Hotel. These commercial enterprises are not for everyone but if you’re not a fan of Hungarian Goulash, at least there’s a predictable alternative. The one thing that struck me about Budapest was its cleanliness. Compared to other major European cities there was a distinct lack of litter and general grime; a pleasant, if unexpected, surprise. There was also little evidence of beggars and nuisance street entertainers. Coupled with the glorious weather, efficient public transport system (I recommend the no. 2 tram) and endless photo opportunities, a trip to Budapest is certainly a trip worth making. Robbie Williams, of course, was just the icing on a very delicious cake!

It’s not easy to pick one specific highlight from the show. Certainly, seeing him sitting on a giant boxing glove which then hovered above the crowd was pretty memorable; as was the duet with a very lucky lady who was invited to join him on stage and sing along to ‘Somethin’ Stupid’, albeit wearing a voice distorting and face obscuring mask. But probably the unexpected duet with his father was my own personal favourite. He told the story of how, from a young age, he watched and admired his dad as he entertained people with his singing. CAR RENTALS AND PROMISSORY NOTES THE REAL STORY

D

espite the new laws applied by the ministry of commerce to prohibit car rental shops from forcing customers to sign a blank promissory note, some car rental shops are still committing such actions towards their customers, against the law’s recommendations. Therefore, it's very important to clarify the legal considerations about such promissory notes and to enlighten our readers to know what to do when they face a similar problem.

How did it all start? Every time someone tries to rent a car they are forced to sign a blank promissory note in order to get the car rental contract. Due to their urgent situation and the need to get the car, they accept the situation and sign the document. Most car rental shops use this blank, signed promissory note against the customer if he fails to bring the car back, has an accident, destroys the vehicle or brings it back in a damaged condition. They keep the promissory note to force the customer to pay for any damage or loss. But is this even legal?

The ministry of commerce states: It's illegal to force customers to sign a blank promissory note in order to rent a car and such action is considered as a breach. Once the car rental shop asks you to sign a blank promissory note, the violation of law has been committed by them (just by offering) even if you didn't sign. If you refused to sign and they refused to rent you a car then that is the second law violation by the office (refusing to rent it). Moreover, the law obligated those offices to allow their customers to freely choose their car rental period. Previously, most of the car rental shops would not allow the customer to rent for a period of less than three days. The law now determines a minimum period of not less than 24 hours (a whole day).

My advice: If you want to rent a car, make sure you deal with a trustworthy car rental company and read the contract before signing it. It should not include any agreement about a promissory note. Also, be aware that the contract is the only document you should have to sign when you rent a car. You should not sign anything else. 16

SEPTEMBER IS INTERNATIONAL SELF-AWARENESS MONTH aware and mindful. Some of these questions will give you a greater understanding and knowledge of yourself. Remember to be very open and honest with yourself. There is no right or wrong. Remove all self criticism or judgment of yourself if you want to truly get to know yourself. What is your temperament type? Are you a feelings/facts person? When you are clarifying matters or expressing your emotions do you break them down into knowing the facts or are you more concerned about how it made you feel? Are you detail orientated or focused merely on the gist of things? Think of your latest project and how you handled it. Do you see yourself as reflective, spontaneous, decisive? When situations get heated, what is your usual manner of response? Now think of the values you hold on to dearly. If you were to write down five top values that are important to you what would they be? Write them down, then list them from 1 to 5, 1 being the biggest priority. Some ideas of values people have are: Status. Leadership. Creativity. Empathy. Trust. Family. Commitment. Work. Yours may reflect these or be completely different- there are tons of values and that’s how diverse we are. If you have some ideas listed above you’re doing great. Well done for getting to know yourself. I’m sure the acquaintance is welcomed.

n a globalized world - and a barrage of societal, family and media pressure - we are all trying in vain to emulate someone famous, someone out there, someone who portrays success. We copy their styles of dress, their poses and their behaviours. We try to eat where they eat, meet who they meet and do what they do. And, in the process, something always feels missing; an utter lack of some sort that we cannot put our fingers on. Perhaps it’s that we are trying in vain to be a copy of someone else. We are trying so hard at something that goes against the very grain of our being and, slowly but surely, we lose more and more awareness of who we really are. We think we are this and that but maybe if we dig deeper we realize it’s not at all the case. It’s just that our sense of self has become so warped that we think we are more like the person we were emulating when, in fact, we are in a space between no man's land; no longer belonging to ourselves or someone else. Did you know that there are special things that make you unique? You have your very own set of interests, skills, values and personality. The makeup of you is as unique as your finger print. So who are you and what makes you, YOU? Let's see how YOU can become more self aware this month and in the months to follow and how YOU can move out of the no man's land and leap towards yourself. Here are some things to ponder that will help provide you with deeper insight as you work your way towards becoming more 18

SEPTEMBER 2017

Let’s look at your special interests. What kinds of books do you like reading, or maybe you don’t like reading? What do you love doing in your spare time? Where would you go to if you could close your eyes and be teleported to that space. Do you have a clear and main focused interest or do your interests vary? Are you interested in a host of things? List them. All these thoughts you are having are wonderful. Save them for the end when you can write a letter to yourself, as if you were writing to a new pen pal and you were letting this pen pal know a little about you. Remember to think about your skills and strengths; your weaknesses and blind spots. Rack your brain a little about your skill sets. How do you communicate? Are you a loner or team player? Are you internally motivated or externally driven? How do you problem solve? If you are daring enough, you may want to ask a close friend or family member to gently let you in on a secret. The part about yourself you don’t know much about, that observers see and are aware of. This will give you a fuller grasp on the real you. Knowing ourselves from our own perspectives is great but knowing ourselves from the perspectives of others is deeply insightful and awakening. Once you have notes made on yourself, write a letter to yourself. Schedule in some ME time. Perhaps indulge in one of your interests and reflect on the unique qualities that are both strengths and weaknesses. Be proud of both as they are yours, only you own them. Become comfortable with your findings, embrace the untapped you, wholeheartedly. None of us are perfect, the imperfections bring us little blessings too, and without them you wouldn’t be YOU.

Ghadeer Qambar “Beauty is all about confidence” When it comes to make up, Ghadeer Qambar insists that simplicity is key. Known for her natural looking makeup, Ghadeer is well placed to offer advice; and with dreams of her own makeup school in Kuwait, she may soon be doing just that.

Please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Ghadeer Qambar. I was born and live in Kuwait. I am very independent and that's how I have been raised by my parents. I am a wife and mother and very attached to my family so they always come first. I’m in love with coffee, food and music but makeup is my passion.

Tell us about your education: I hold a full Diploma in makeup and have been in the makeup business for eight years. I also have a Masters Degree and Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering from Kuwait University.

20

SEPTEMBER 2017

When and how did you get interested in makeup? When did you decide that you wanted to be a professional makeup artist? Like all girls, I was in love with makeup since I was a teenager. I used to copy models' makeup in magazines and newspapers and try to practice on myself. Also I loved reading a lot about makeup products and beauty creams and how to take care of the skin. Over time, my friends started to ask me to do their makeup for parties and weddings. I have done makeup since then and began to study makeup. I became a professional in 2009.

Can you share some highlights of your journey as a Pro Makeup Artist? The most important thing in makeup is to practice it with your own taste and vision. Also, take some ideas and techniques from other makeup artists. That’s why I insisted on attending many master classes with international makeup artists to learn their secrets and ideas.

What are the different services that you currently offer to your clients? Makeup for different occasions, like receptions, weddings, birthday parties, graduation parties, engagements, etc.

How do you define beauty? Beauty is all about confidence. Confidence is the master key for beauty.

Does everyone look better with makeup? Of course! When we say makeup, it doesn’t mean too much makeup. Sometimes minimal makeup is more than enough to show beautiful features of the face.

How do you keep up with the latest trends and style and where do you go for inspiration? I follow up with high end brands and top makeup artists worldwide.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career? Dealing with different types of personalities, especially celebrities.

What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment in your career so far? My name has reached very well known brands in the world like Anastasia Beverly Hills, Smash Box and Benefit cosmetics.

What three makeup items should no woman leave home without? Compact powder, lip gloss and a good mascara!

What is the best way to stay fresh for the summer? Drink lots of water, use sunblock and bright colours for makeup with lots of highlighter!

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists? I’m very well known for good blending, great contour and natural looking makeup.

What is your skin care routine? Never sleep with any makeup on! Hydrating moisturizer and dermatologist follow up.

In your opinion, what are common mistakes you see women make on their makeup? The most popular mistake is that they copy any known makeup artist technique and use products that are not suitable for their skin tone and type. They follow the trend whether it’s suitable or not!

22

SEPTEMBER 2017

What is the most important beauty advice you can give to women? Simplicity is everything. Stay simple in everything. Over doing anything can go very ugly!

Can you tell us more about your GQ Mink Lashes? Lashes in general give an amazing definition to the eyes. I decided to do my own lash line and I’m very proud that I was the first lady from the Gulf region to have her own lash line.

Are you planning to launch any new products? Yes, I am working on some other products other than lashes. It will take time but hopefully they will be out soon.

Share something you would like the world to know about you. I don’t put makeup on every day! I’m fine with going out with only sunblock or moisturizer on my face. I rarely go to beauty salons too!

What are some of your other hobbies? I love listening to music, sports and cooking.

What’s the next goal on your ‘list’? To have my own makeup school in Kuwait.

Your message for us at CP magazine: Thank you for selecting me for this issue and best wishes to all the team.

MOVIE MISDEMEANOURS

Y

ou can’t beat a trip to the cinema. I, like many others, look forward to the latest movie releases with eager anticipation. It’s not just about being able to watch your favourite movie stars on the big screen; it’s the whole cinematic experience. However hard you may try, you simply cannot recreate this environment in your own home. To enjoy your movie experience to the max certain things are essential. First of all, you need to be comfortable. Thankfully, modern day movie theatres are a far cry from the traditional ‘picture houses’ of old. Not only are the seats now comfy, some of them even recline. There’s also plenty of room to stretch your legs, thus reducing the risk of cramp part way through the movie. Secondly, the quality of both the picture and the sound need to be exceptional. With modern technology, this is pretty much guaranteed. So much so, you feel as though you are actually taking part in every scene; transported into the movie and accompanying each character as their story unfolds. Thirdly, your fellow movie-goers need to be quiet. Sadly, this third essential is where the whole cinema experience falls down. Thanks to other people’s selfishness, our movie enjoyment is at best, interrupted or at worst, completely ruined. Despite requests for mobile phones to be switched off before the movie begins, countless ring tones, message alerts and vibrations can be heard throughout the film. But it’s not just the sound

24

SEPTEMBER 2017

of the phones that cause disruption; it’s the light from the screens. It’s not enough just to switch your phone to ‘silent’. The bright light from a mobile phone screen can light up a dark movie theatre like an airport runway! As if that’s not bad enough, some people actually answer their phone and conduct a conversation in the middle of the movie! How rude and utterly selfish can you get? But it doesn’t end there. Let’s not forget those who arrive late and stand in the aisle discussing where they should sit; or those who insist on rustling crisp packets or sweet wrappers throughout the entire film. I long for the day when cinema refreshment counters only sell snacks in soundless, non-rustling wrappers. Why should I miss Daniel Craig’s witty one-liners just because the guy sitting behind me wants another handful of popcorn? And why should I strain to hear Tom Hardy’s dying words over the rustling of my neighbour’s Maltesers? Perhaps the most irritating annoyance is the one favoured by those who have clearly seen the film before. The one where they deliver a line before it’s actually spoken in the movie, spoiling both the anticipation and intended surprise of everyone within earshot; not to mention robbing the character of their favourite lines. Together with the fridge-like temperatures in the theatre and the often unnecessary censorship gaps in the films, these misdemeanours can seriously impact upon our movie experience. Some of these are clearly outside of our control. However, showing a little respect and keeping noise to a minimum is surely not too much to ask. Is it?

Last season was iconic for local band ‘The Afterthought’. Composed of five members - Bassam Shuhaibar, Zak Musawi, Husain Alharbi, Omar Salem and Aziz Baqer - their shows at Qout Market and Taste of Q8 Food Festival were documented on social media weeks after the events. Not forgetting the electric, sold-out show at ACK. The band radiates a surplus of energy that can electrify any space. Last year, they also showed their charitable side by performing at a fund-raiser for Syrian refugees at the German Ambassador’s residence. Wherever they go, they drive the crowd wild and leave them panting for more. Their fans – affectionately referred to as RoxBots – are never sated, which is why at every concert it has become a trademark for the audience to beg the band to continue singing. Here, Bassam Shuhaibar (aka Buzz), co-founder, lead vocalist and lyricist, provides us with more juicy details regarding the band.

There is evidently a synergy present among each member in the band. But, there is something more phenomenal about your stage presence, something that is rarely seen locally. It seems as though the audience lets go when you guys perform. Is it your collective passion that assists your RoxBots in losing their inhibitions or is it something enigmatic that even you guys do not comprehend – a je ne sais quoi kind of thing? The Afterthought lineup has evolved almost as organically as our original compositions, and even though it has shifted over the years (usually due to reasons beyond our control), there is one element that we have been blessed with in its perpetuity: chemistry. When Zak Musawi and I formed the band way back when, it was built on a foundation of that ‘X factor’ that you allude to. Even at the very beginning, our friends would refer to an intangible force that was evident whenever we performed. We are currently blessed with a group of guys who naturally fit in with our mindset and musical taste, which translates naturally into a live performance or recording studio. I believe it is this invisible binding force that allows us to collectively convey a certain energy to the crowd, which they then reflect back several times stronger. This sets up a ‘feedback loop’ until a boiling point is reached and that is where the real magic happens. BASSAM SHUHAIBAR 30

You have played in both public arenas and private residences. To this date, what has been your most memorable performance; the one that immediately springs to mind when you think of a live performance? I get asked this question quite often, yet it never yields a straightforward answer. Whenever I recall past performances I end up with a mental ‘mosaic’ of sorts, where different moments or songs stand out at their respective venues. For example, we played Qout Market early last season. It was the perfect day for an outdoor event, and when we finished the last number in our set the crowd spontaneously erupted into chants of ‘One more song! One more song!’ That had never happened to us up until that point, a rush that we will never forget. Another was the time we played at a car launch event in one of the malls here in Kuwait. The crowd was very lukewarm and scattered at the beginning, but by the end of the gig we had a very vibrant and excited, not to mention decent-sized, crowd (standing room only). They made us feel like we were in a sports arena as opposed to a local outdoor venue. And who can forget our very first headlining concert held at the Australian College of Kuwait in May of this year? The stage; the lights; the crowd - to say the experience was phenomenal would be a huge understatement. That being said, if I had to choose one overall performance that really stands out, it would be the one at Dar Al Funoon this past spring. It was the first time we had ever performed a purely acoustic set in front of an audience, and if you are

AZIZ BAQER

familiar with the venue you know that it is quite cozy. We had guests sitting in front of us in the courtyard and stood up all the way around the perimeter of the actual exhibition hall, right up to the entrance. Ironically, the intimacy of the venue coupled with the sonically acoustic nature of the performance generated an atmosphere that can only be described as electric. The icing on the cake was the interaction with the audience that only a venue like that could accommodate, resulting in unforgettable renditions of covers like ‘Grenade’ (Bruno Mars) and ‘Alive’ (Pearl Jam), as well as originals that we had never played outside our jam sessions before (‘Walk Away’ and ‘Dawn’). In fact, my most memorable moment happened when we had just ended ‘Dawn’ and were met with what we felt was a very half-hearted response, only to have one of the women sitting in the middle of the crowd say (in Arabic),‘We came here to have a good time, so why are you making us cry?’

Mission accomplished.

HUSAIN ALHARBI

Only musicians can understand the rush of playing to a live audience, the rush of having fans sing along to their songs, particularly the original ones. Can you make it a bit more tangible for the rest of us who will never be able to grasp the feeling? In all honesty, there are no words that can justify a description of that feeling. What makes it even more special is that it is not dependent on the size of the audience, because I have experienced that rush everywhere from simple musical gatherings of friends to full-on shows at larger venues. I remember being with Zak at a friend’s place here in Kuwait in the early 2000s and we decided to play ‘Dawn’ to the group of eight or so people there. They had heard it a few times www.cpmagazine.net

already on account of my playing it solo for them, but it blew me away when they sang along with the first verse, word-for-word; I literally could not wipe the smile off my face, which was starkly juxtaposed against the semi-somber lyrics. To follow up from that, I ran into a friend at a work function a few months ago who had attended university in the Washington, D.C. area at the same time I was there, and she asked me if I was still playing that song about ‘walking alone on a path paved in stone’. The fact that she had remembered those lyrics from only a couple of jam sessions at a mutual friend’s house over 15 years ago. Well…needless to say, it was a very special moment.

32

The feeling is very closely related to that energy I had alluded to in my response to your first question. A perfect example is what happened during that same Dar Al Funoon gig. It was quite cold that evening and we were all dressed a little more lightly than we should have been. Early on in the set, we launched into ‘All I Want’, our signature original, and when I looked around there were a couple of people singing along to it in the opening verses. The same thing happened with ‘Poison’ and of course the more popular covers (especially ‘Grenade’) had groups singing along so loudly that I couldn’t help but turn the microphone towards them. Take an industrial-sized oven and turn up the heat as high as it can go, then throw in some lighter fluid for good measure; that’s close to what the resulting feeling was like. By the time we said ‘goodnight’ it may as well have been mid-July.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Finally, you used the word ‘iconic’ in your introduction to describe our run last season, which in my opinion is absolutely spot-on. Every single one of us is cognizant of that and wants to do their part to take the band to the next level. Nothing unites a team more deliberately than a common objective.

Finally, out of curiosity, would you - along with each member of the band - give up your day jobs if you could make a living out of making music? In a nutshell, absolutely! I know I speak for all of us when I say that. How many people really, sincerely, truly love what they do for a living, or wake up in the morning looking forward to where and with whom they will be spending the next seven hours or so? I am sure many people would respond that they ‘like’ where they are or what they do, but that is not the same. There is no motivational force that is more influential than passion, because it is as much the means as it is the premise. If it wasn’t there, I can safely say neither Zak nor myself would have lasted this long. And if there is one thing I have learned over the past 20 years, you are never too old to chase a dream, nor feel like a kid when you catch it. The Afterthought are currently working on their debut album OMAR SALEM

Five guys. One Vision. How do you get everyone in the band to commit to one ideal? That is a great question. As I mentioned previously, it really helps that every single one of us has a range of musical tastes that seems to overlap perfectly in the center. Our musical style is one we like to call ‘Unirock’ (universal rock) because it is very difficult to pigeon-hole our original compositions into one particular genre. This is also why we love to cover everyone from Bon Jovi to Bruno Mars, George Michael to Gn’R. Once you have that shared common interest, as well as that natural chemistry, the rest of it just falls into place. Another major factor is that everyone knows and appreciates their role in the band. We make it very clear that The Afterthought is a ‘no drama’ zone, meaning all issues are dealt with immediately and face-to-face. In addition, whenever we compose a new song, creative input is as expected as it is appreciated from each band member. Thankfully, that input is usually incorporated without any critique, which is also encouraged a vast majority of the time.

7 COMMON CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN

I

t can be alarming when your brush seems to hold more hair than your scalp does. The good news is that some hair loss is to be expected (the average person loses up to 150 strands a day). If you’re shedding significantly more than that, however, any number of physiological or psychological factors could be to blame. But you don’t have to tear your (remaining) hair out. Whatever the cause, there are strategies that can help. What's normal?

First a bit about your hair’s natural growth cycle: Each strand grows for several years, and then enters a resting phase for three to four months before it is finally shed. Next, the follicle begins to grow a new hair and the cycle begins again. Different strands of hair are in different phases of the growth cycle at any given time, which is why you don’t go bald every few years.

What’s not normal? If you notice your part widening, your scalp showing through at your crown, or the hair at your temples receding, you may have an issue. Here are a few possible culprits. Consult your doctor who can help you get to the root of the problem.

Genetics Female-pattern hair loss - androgenetic alopecia - is the most common form and causes the hair on top of the head to thin. The gene can be inherited from either your mother's or father's side of the family, though you're more likely to have it if both of your parents had hair loss. Hair loss can be slowed down by applying minoxidil (Rogaine) to the scalp twice a day. The drug works on both women and men, although women should use a lowerstrength formula to prevent unnecessary side effects. Women should not use minoxidil if they are pregnant or nursing. 36

SEPTEMBER 2017

Stress Hair loss can occur after a significant physiological strain, such as a prolonged illness or crash dieting, which may leave you deficient in iron, B12, or protein - all vital to healthy hair growth. An emotionally trying event, like a divorce, can also lead to allover thinning three to four months later, when the hairs that were forming under the scalp at the time finally make (or don’t make) their appearance. Usually the hair will grow back in a few months. If a nutrient deficiency is the cause, your doctor can help you supplement your diet.

Brushing or Pulling Brushing hair too vigorously or wearing tight braids or ponytails can pull hair out in patches, a condition called traction alopecia. However, the hair will grow back when the repeated tugging stops.

prescribe spironolactone (Aldactone), which also blocks male hormones. Losing weight can also help by decreasing the effect of the male hormones.

Iron Deficiency Anemia Women who have heavy periods or don't eat enough iron-rich foods may be prone to iron deficiency, in which the blood doesn't have enough red blood cells. Red blood cells transport oxygen to cells throughout your body, giving you the energy you need. Eat iron-rich foods such as beef, fish, leafy greens, fortified cereals, and beans - preferably, along with foods rich in vitamin C, which enhances iron absorption. Women need 18 mg of iron a day, 8 mg after menopause; ask your doctor if you should take an iron supplement. You can also find supplements specifically for hair loss; key ingredients may include biotin, silica, and L-cysteine, in addition to iron.

The Immune System With alopecia areata, a woman’s immune system attacks her follicles, resulting in round patches or clumpy hair loss. Alopecia areata is usually treated with corticosteroid injections by the doctor. In some cases, minoxidil (Rogaine) may also help. It's also important to reduce stress.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome The condition, which can begin as early as age 11, is caused by a hormonal imbalance in which the ovaries produce too many male hormones. PCOS often causes infertility. Most cases of PCOS are treated with birth control pills such as Yasmin, which contains a potent anti-androgen that blocks testosterone. If you can't use birth control pills, your doctor may

Hypothyroidism Millions of people, most of them women, suffer from thyroid disease. When your body produces too little thyroid hormone, the hormone responsible for metabolism, heart rate and mood, you are said to have hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid. If your body makes too much of the hormone, you're said to have hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid. Thyroid hormone is responsible for everything from your basal metabolic rate - the rate at which your body uses oxygen and energy to function - to the growth of your hair, skin and nails. But when you don't have the right amount, you may notice changes in bodily functions. Your doctor may prescribe a thyroid hormone medication to restore levels to normal. Regular TSH tests might be done to ensure an adequate dosage. www.cpmagazine.net

hat does a $150 dollar brush have that other brushes don't? Well, Mason Pearson brushes are not mass produced, most of the work is carried out by hand using techniques pioneered by his founder. This brush can actually brag about being part of the beauty world for almost 150 years. This is an exceptional quality as not much of this brush has changed and the major parts are still made by hand. A hair brush from Mason is more or less like the little black dress from Chanel. Both are irreplaceable classics. The history of this iconic product goes back to the 19th century, when the industrial revolution was accelerating and England had become the center for ideas and inventions in the mechanical world. That was the equivalent in its day to Silicon Valley today. Mason Pearson was a genius engineer and inventor who began his career designing wool processing looms in the north of England. He later met and married Mary Avis

and moved to London where he worked at the British Steam Brush Works in London’s East End. He would use his knowledge in the wool processing industry to spark the invention of an automatic brushboring machine to speed up the process of brush making. It was not until 1905 that he improved his idea of a ‘pneumatic’ rubber-cushion hairbrush. He used both nylon and wild boar bristle over an elastic rubber pad. It was genius. The nylon detangled while the wild boar bristle gave shine to the hair. The product design used nowadays is similar to the original model of 1885 and this brand is still run by the same family. This iconic product has fans all over the world. There are hundreds of stories and positive reviews about it and the only negative quality about it is the price - quite expensive for a brush - yet it makes sense to use a top quality hair brush in order to enjoy the best results.

ONCE FAT, ALWAYS FAT? Jamie & Alana Karehana

L

ess than 1% of the formerly obese will maintain weight loss for more than a year, according to a study conducted in the UK in 2015. Specifically this broke down to just 1 man out of 210 and 1 woman out of 124.

Does this mean that once fat we are all doomed to stay fat? Participants in the study were told to eat less and move more, a method that failed to deliver long-term results. Clearly this sound bite advice wasn’t enough. 40

SEPTEMBER 2017

We could launch into a debate over whether or not this study practiced sound research and whether or not the participants really did eat less and exercise more, but instead we’d rather share with you what we know to be true about lasting weight loss. Make no mistake about it, long-term fat loss results are very possible and are enjoyed by the majority of our clients – in stark contrast to the UK study results! Since there’s more to it than simply eating less and moving more, how does one go about losing fat and then keeping it off for the long haul? Here are 5 Steps to Lose it For Good:

Step 1 to Lose it For Good - The Right Mindset There are only two mindsets to choose from when you approach your quest for weight loss: 1. This is a temporary change in my behaviour. 2. This is a new way of life. There’s no middle ground, you either see it as temporary change or you see it as permanent change. It’s pretty obvious which mindset produces permanent results. Step 2 to Lose it For Good - New Habits Understanding how to put new habits in place is the second step to losing the weight and keeping it lost. As we just saw in step one, looking at your weight loss behaviour as a new lifestyle is the only way to ensure permanent results and this means adopting healthy new habits. Habits are best taken on in gradual steps. This has been proven to be the most effective way to make the new habits stick. Approach building new habits with baby steps instead of grand leaps. If one of your current, fattening, habits is that you drink sugary soda then first switch to drinking diet soda. Once the habit of drinking diet soda has completely replaced your sugary soda habit then you can start replacing some of the diet soda with water. You didn’t jump straight from drinking flavourful, fizzy soda to just drinking water, that’s too extreme and will make success unlikely. Step 3 to Lose it For Good - Your Environment In order to permanently change your body you must permanently change your environment. It makes sense that you won’t maintain a lean body in the same environment where you gained the weight. The term ‘environment’ sounds vague, so let’s break it down. Your environment is the world that you create around yourself. These are the foods that you see, smell and have easy access to. This is the ease or difficulty you have in consistently accessing exercise. This is the lifestyle of the people closest to you that cast an influence on your own lifestyle whether you realize it or not. I’ll bet you could draw out the ideal environment for permanent weight loss. You know the path. Now put in the effort to walk the path.

make a distinction between calories. When total calorie count is your only goal you’ll end up consuming lower quality calories than you should, which leads to mindless eating and malnutrition. Educate yourself on healthy calories versus nutritionally void calories. A great rule of thumb is that calories that are created in nature are always superior to calories created in a factory. Stick with real food over anything from a package. Step 5 to Lose it For Good - Your Support System If you just did the first 4 steps then you’d be well on your way to successfully transforming your body from fat to fit, and keeping it that way for the long haul. However, in order to fully ensure that you make the switch from where you are to where you want to be it’s important to put a support system in place. Nothing is more powerful than social accountability. Instinctively you don’t want to let people down, and so you’ll work harder and more consistently in a support group than you would when working on your own. It’s hard to sleep in when you know someone is at the gym waiting for you! This fifth and most important step is where we come into your life. Our entire mission is to not only provide you with the action steps to getting into the best shape of your life, we are also here to provide you with the support that you need to make it happen. Call or email us now to get started on a program that will get you fit for life. You can do this!

Step 4 to Lose it For Good - Good Nutrition The problem with the advice of eat less and move more is that it doesn’t

EXPECTATIONS AND BELIEFS ARE THEY GOOD FOR YOUR TRAINING? Julie Caradec

State your expectations and beliefs now! In mental coaching, we use an ‘AMAP’ (Athlete Mental Aptitude Profile) which is a great tool to get to know someone better. It also finds out if the beliefs and expectations of that person are correct or need some work. All of us have a weakness to work on. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with this but it’s worth remembering that even the most stable person can be better. I want everyone to be successful. When expectations and negative beliefs appear regarding an event, an action, or something from the past, this is called ‘Mental Game Undercurrents’. These can occur as a result of:

Expectations Perhaps the expectation is to reach a certain score, time, or even lose weight. In the fitness industry, for example, it’s typical to observe unrealistic objectives in weight loss. This expectation limits the success. There is no enjoyable part, only expectations and unrealistic wishes.

Generalization This is a wrong belief brought on by wrong mindset and behavior, based on a past event. Generalizing is expecting the same thing to happen again and again. The simplest way to understand it is from past experiences. If in the past, you went to the gym but did not follow a personalized fitness program, you may have used the wrong weights and your muscles may hurt for some time after. Your memory will form a generalization, tricking you into believing that the gym is bad for you and is always painful. Obviously, this isn’t correct. All you needed was the correct training and fitness program.

Irrational beliefs Unrealistic expectations (no purpose or high expectations) result in irrational beliefs and limit positive results and success. So what should you do? Perfectionism can be the reason. In this case, try to be more relaxed about the result; otherwise you will face failure every time.

Negative Self Label If you think negatively about an aspect of your personality or something you might not do well enough from your perception, you will sabotage yourself and invite failure. Imagine you are at the swimming pool and your body isn’t the shape you would like it to be. The result of negative self label has the potential to stop your training, reduce your performance and reduce your self esteem. Nothing positive will come from this attitude or behavior. So think twice before you think negatively!

Causes In psychology, people reacting in such a negative way will engage three main thinking errors: -Ignoring the positive -Accentuate the negative -Over generalizing It may sound obvious but it’s difficult to be conscious of this attitude and to fix it right away when it happens. Have you ever felt uncomfortable in the morning, knowing you have to train but your body isn’t awake and you just want to go back to sleep? How is your brain reacting? It is telling you that you’re not good enough; that the person next to you is better, fitter and luckier? It’s making you think that you want to be that person. But why? Everyone is different and comparing yourself to someone else is a part of the expectations, generalization, irrational and negative labels. Think about it. The next time it happens you will know the skills and the rules to help you adapt your thoughts. The best formula I ever read about psychology is called formula success. ‘Expectation equals failures, manageable objectives are the key’. This is the best way to deal with expectations and negative beliefs. It worked for me and is an ideal base for the emotional approach to training.

O

THE BACK TO SCHOOL LUNCHBOX REVOLUTION

ver the last three decades, obesity rates have tripled globally among children between the ages of 6 and 19. The general solution to combating obesity is simple – healthy eating and exercise. But if probed further, it is also evident that schools today have not taken the right steps in promoting healthy

eating. Here are three simple steps that will help in providing a better and healthier start for our kids’ school day.

1. Pack your own lunchbox from home instead of having food at schools. Schools in Kuwait today serve food items such as croissants, mayonnaise and sausage sandwiches, cupcakes, full-fat milk and full-fat pastry (like fatayers) on a daily basis. This means school children are exposed to such fatty and sugary food items so early in the day. An ideal lunchbox should contain the following: ITEM A bottle of water Wholegrain cheese, veggie or labneh sandwich

Vegetables Fruits Snacks

Dairy

WHY Water is the number 1 liquid your child should be drinking. Sandwiches are the perfect source of energy that your child needs during the day. However, make sure it is made with wholegrain bread, without mayonnaise and processed foods such as corned beef and sausages. Add vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber into the sandwich, or separately as cut vegetable sticks. Apples, bananas, oranges and strawberries are great sources of vitamins and boosts your child’s immunity levels at school. Try making a home-made muffin for your child to take to school. Otherwise, a small container of low-fat yoghurt is a great option. Include a low-fat milk or yogurt which is a great source of calcium.

2. Ditch the juice box, switch to the milk box. One of the most common misconceptions among parents is thinking that juice boxes are healthy for children and to include it in their child’s lunchbox. The truth is quite the opposite. Juice boxes contain so much sugar and preservatives, that the goodness of the natural fruit is barely evident. Most times, juice boxes only have the flavoring of the fruit so what you end up giving your child is a sugary drink with a fruit flavor. 54

SEPTEMBER 2017

Milk, on the other hand is important to children up to the age of 16. They should have three glasses of milk daily as it contains high quality proteins and is rich in minerals that are important for healthy bones and teeth. Also, alternating between fresh milk, chocolate, strawberry or even banana milk is a great step in ensuring your child won’t get bored with the flavor.

3. Breakfast at home, lunchbox at school. The lunchbox is not a substitute for breakfast. Breakfast is still the most important meal of the day. Most children avoid having breakfast early in the morning because they don’t feel hungry. The solution to this is to start with a light meal, such as a glass of milk. Once your child’s stomach gets used to the idea of having food in the morning, he or she will wake up feeling hungry. Then you can gradually increase it to a small bowl of cereal or even a light sandwich. Breakfast is extremely important as it ensures that your child’s brain is fueled up in the morning to absorb the information and knowledge taught at school. In conclusion, a quick guide for a healthy lunchbox. PUT THIS Water Whole-grain cheese, veggie or labneh sandwich, home-made pies Home-made muffin, vanilla yoghurt, home-made cakes Low-fat milk box

NOT THAT Soda, Ice-tea Croissant, hot dog, burger, nuggets, sausage & mayo sandwich, fatayer Chocolate bars, donuts, cream puff Juice boxes

LIFE WITH CAKE

B

ack to school means back to reality for moms. The most hectic time of year is here! You might not have enough time to treat yourself with a massage or a shopping trip, but you absolutely have time to do some good old baking - at least on the weekend! Here is a recipe I am obsessed with lately Coffee Brownies! As if the sound of it does not scream MOST NEEDED, this recipe will give you the energy and the caffeine you need to go ahead and continue being ‘super mom’. You will need: l8 tablespoons (1stick) unsalted butter, plus butter for the pan l2/3 cup all-purpose flour, plus flour for the pan

Steps: 1) Preheat the oven to 325°F. Grease the sides and bottom of an 8-inch square baking pan with butter and coat lightly with flour.

2) Melt the chocolate and the 8 tablespoons of butter in a small bowl over a pot of barely simmering water.

3) Whisk the eggs and sugar together in a large bowl until the mixture is fluffy and pale yellow. Whisk in the espresso, cinnamon, vanilla and salt until well combined. 4) Very slowly add the chocolate/butter to the egg mixture and mix until thoroughly combined. Add the 2/3 cup flour into the batter and mix well. 5) Grease the baking pan with butter then add a little flour. Pour the brownie batter into the greased pan. 6) Bake the brownies in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes. You can check if they’re done by sticking a toothpick right in the middle.

l2 cups of chocolate chips or chocolate bar l3 large eggs l3/4 cup sugar l1 1/4 teaspoons instant espresso powder l1 teaspoon cinnamon l1 teaspoon vanilla extract l1/2 teaspoon salt

Cool the brownies before cutting. You can add vanilla ice cream on top when you serve it. I've also tried pouring on top a cup of espresso as soon as the brownies are out of the oven. This emphasizes on the taste of coffee. You can always use decaf espresso in your recipe if you don't need the caffeine.

Remember: Bake for love and bake with love! Let me know how your recipe turns out: www.sherisnovember.wordpress.com Bon appetite!

Sheikah Al Habshi ‘Coffee and Castoffs’

“….. the way that you dress reflects what you believe about yourself” Sheikah Al Habshi’s desire to document her fashion journey evolved into a flourishing online business. Now designing quirky clothing inspired by the past, she believes that originality is the key to success. Please introduce yourself to our readers: Hello! My name is Sheikah Al Habshi. I am a young Kuwaiti designer, currently a student at KU studying Interior Architecture.

Tell us about your education: Well, I graduated from high school here in Kuwait. I enrolled in fashion classes online and at school which is where I earned my BTEC in Garment Manufacturing. I've taken many short courses from schools like UAL and I'm currently studying online to get a Certificate in Fashion Essentials from Parsons, The New School.

How and when did you get interested in fashion? My interest in fashion started back in 2013 when I started working towards my BTEC. I had always been interested in designing and working with my hands since I started knitting around the age of 9.

So would you consider yourself self-taught? I have taken a few classes here and there in terms of making the clothes myself and learning the basics. However, I would never fully consider myself self taught as I'm always learning and aspiring to become better.

Who in your life has encouraged and supported your amazing designs? Did anyone or anything inspire them? I'm blessed to have such a strong support team here in Kuwait. However, Ms Lynn Whyte who was my BTEC instructor has always been very supportive of my designs and always pushed me to the next level. I wouldn't be where I am now without her; she's taught me everything I know! My sisters are extremely supportive in terms of their guidance and believing in me when many did not. Lastly, having friends that are as goal oriented as I am changed the way I design and work and have truly been a huge inspiration.

What inspires you most? I've always been inspired by the past and the way people used to dress; the simplicity and elegance of it all. Old movies and TV shows like Mad Men have been a huge influence on the way I dress and design.

How has your work evolved since you began designing? A lot has changed since I first started designing and since I began to grow up and change as well. I am a firm believer in the way that you dress reflects what you believe about yourself and the way you want others to perceive you. So the way I began to design evolved the more I began to evolve as well. The way I design now is less focused on mass production and what 68

everyone wants, but rather what I, as a designer, feel best represents my brand and who I am.

Tell us about your brand - what exactly do you create? Well Coffee and Castoffs started off as a way to document my journey through design and fashion but as time went on it started growing into a small online business. This later became Coffee and Castoffs By Sheikah Al Habshi. I design vintage inspired and quirky clothing such as dresses and kaftans and I’m hoping to branch out even more through the upcoming collections. However, my signature pieces of the moment are my dresses.

How did you come up with the name for your brand/ label?

Well, it was a spur of the moment thing. I was trying to come up with a name for a fun, easy going blog to document my work and Coffee and Castoffs just seemed to roll off the tongue so easily that I fell in love with it. A castoff is usually the last stitch on any knitted piece so that's where I got the name.

Can you explain your design process from start to finish? I usually find inspiration from day to day moments or issues that I see around me and usually start sketching them everywhere I go, constantly refining. Most of my textbooks are filled with tiny sketches of garments! Later on, I start draping the fabric on my mannequin and after that I start working on making the garment myself or talking to a local tailor for some help.

What are some of your favourite materials to work with? My main materials are usually my sewing machine, my fabric and my mannequin.

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work? I'm currently very fascinated by nature and the idea of light and I'm trying to learn how to incorporate that into my designs. These are two elements I feel particularly safe and confident in, thus incorporating them into my designs will hopefully make the customer feel the same way wearing my designs.

What do you think is the key that makes one fashion designer successful? Originality, definitely. In a world where everyone wants to just fit in, I believe that any successful designer stays true to his ideology and origins.

How would you describe your personal style? Feminine, quirky and care-free.

Your all time favourite designer? Ellie Saab and Zac Posen.

What’s next for you? What are your goals for the future? I'm going to be designing my latest collection for fall/autumn which will hopefully be launching at the end of September.

Where are your designs available to buy? All my designs are available on my Instagram @coffeeandcastoffs . My Instagram features my designs, the process, and all my other work revolving around art.

What advice would you give to young designers? Being a young designer myself, I would urge them to take every opportunity that comes their way and always find new ways to learn. Also, find a community which understands your craft and supports it; through that encouraging environment, growth is always found.

Your message for our readers: All I have to say is thank you for reading this interview and I hope you enjoyed what you read. If you would like to contact me for any sort of collaboration my inbox is always open!

STELLA MAXWELL AND STELLA LUCIA STAR IN TWINSET FW 2017-2018 Twinset Simona Barbieri has recently launched the new campaign featuring top models Stella Maxwell and Stella Lucia. Located almost amongst the cloud up in the fierce cliff, Twinset headed to Scotland’s Dunnottar Castle to reveal their Fall Winter 17-18 campaign. Amidst the natural meadows and towering cliffs of the Lowlands, the beautiful models are seen depicting two friends, curious and both awed by the natural beauty of the place. Captured by Giampaolo Sgura, the castle that is steeped in history is said to be the dream location for any photographer. The Italian label continues its journey of style and creativity ‘On the road’: after appearing in Californian setting for SS17, it now arrives in Scotland amidst the natural meadows and towering cliffs of the Lowlands, using Dunnottar Castle and its surroundings as an exception backdrop for the new lifestyle campaign. Two friends. Two partners. Two modern explorers. Romantic and feminine, inspired and curious, their trip is filled with bike rides, authentic British-style picnic, and Super 8 films that reconfirm the growing between the brand and the cinema. “For this season I liked the idea of blending different weights and fabrics," explained Creative Director Simona Barbieri, "using flowing fabrics contrasting with cozy knits. Floral prints are a must because they underline strong femininity in perfect TWINSET style."

s we move from summer to autumn, our wardrobes need updating. This translates into a packed closet! Have you ever experienced the feeling of not knowing what to wear, even though you own a ton of clothes? We are going to walk you through the process, step by step, of achieving an organised closet full of garments you can wear. This month is all about wardrobe detoxing and we have taken the actual case of Edna Trogen, the gorgeous makeup artist and beauty editor of CP Magazine. Our aim is to help Edna in the process of cleansing and organising her wardrobe, as well as identifying her best colours and potentially adding new purchases to complete her looks. So let the cleanse begin!

STEP#1 - ANALYSE YOUR CLOSET The first step to a wardrobe detox is going through the items inside your closet, piece by piece. And the top questions you need to ask yourself are: lHave I worn this piece of clothing in the past year? lDoes this garment fit me properly? lIs this colour complementing my complexion?

72

SEPTEMBER 2017

Looking at Edna’s current wardrobe, we can see it is packed with clothes. But actually, after asking her some questions, we discover that Edna hasn't worn 40% of her clothes in the past twelve months. Does this sound familiar to you? I’m sure many of you can relate to Edna’s story. In fact, studies show that we only wear about 20% of our wardrobe regularly. To complete this step, we also need to know Edna’s colours, so it is time for our famous ‘colour analysis’. By placing warm and cool fabrics near Edna’s face, we discover that she is a ‘cool winter’. This means that her top colours are blue, red, black and white. Having learnt this crucial piece of information, we can now move on to the next step.

Photography: Vania Attieh (www.vania-photography.com)

STEP #2 - TAKE ACTION (KEEP, DONATE OR TAILOR?)

www.cpmagazine.net

73

Now we have a clearer understanding of our wardrobe and our colours, we are now ready to take action and make three piles of clothing: 1- Those to keep 2- Those to donate or sell 3- Those to take to the tailor for alteration Remember we said Edna doesn't wear 40% of her wardrobe? This means we have a lot of work to do in order to sort out her closet. As mentioned we need to build three piles of clothing. The first will consist of those clothes that are her colours (cool) and fit her well. The second will be the unwanted items (which she has decided to donate to a charity). The third will include those garments that need to be tailored. Just to give you some actual examples, Edna will donate her orange jumper and yellow dress, as both are warm colours which do not suit her complexion. On the other hand, Edna should definitely keep some gorgeous business white shirts, a leather skirt, a black blazer and some jeans that fit her body shape to perfection.

STEP #3 - BUY HANGERS The third step to an organised wardrobe is buying hangers of the same shape and colour; hangers to your taste and that are practical for you. Some good options are wooden or padded hangers. For Edna we went for slim white hangers and voilรก! Her wardrobe looks more spacious, organised and uniform.

STEP #4 - ORGANISE YOUR CLOSET The best and easiest way to organise the clothes inside your closet is by colour and garment, from left to right, starting with the lightest colours (e.g. white), followed by those of medium intensity (e.g. blue) and leaving the dark colours (e.g. black) for the end. Believe it or not, your new colour coordinated closet will look neat and pleasant and will definitely help you in the morning when selecting your outfit. In addition, you will always have something to wear, since you will now be able to see all your clothes much more clearly.

74

SEPTEMBER 2017

The last steps to an organised wardrobe is adding, if you feel you need to, any missing pieces. For example, a new blouse for work that is actually your colour and suits you to perfection, which can be combined with your existing business suits and skirts; or a new pair of sandals, if your current ones need updating. With a few key pieces, you will feel like you have a new and refreshed wardrobe. In the case of Edna, she was missing some cool colours in her wardrobe. Since we removed those unwanted warm shades, she felt she was missing some tops. So we added a striped shirt, which can be paired with her existing leather skirt and red heels, but will also look wonderful with a pair of jeans. We recommend detoxing your wardrobe at least once a year. Remember that by following these easy steps, you can keep your wardrobe healthy and in perfect shape. Not only will you have clothes to wear every day, but you won't feel the need to shop as much (only for those missing pieces). Don’t you just love the idea of wearing 100% of your clothes and accessories? It is indeed music to your ears!

GET THE LOOK

GET THE PERFECT STYLE AT ANY AGE! Natasha E. Feghali

I

n the constantly growing landscape of fashion, it's an unfortunate fact that the younger crowd significantly outnumbers ladies of a certain age. It seems everywhere you look, it's nothing but beautiful 20-somethings showing off their style; and while there are certainly more of them, that doesn't make them any more relevant or valuable than their more mature counterparts. Fashion is universal, after all. “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only…. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening". Coco Channel's ideas stand the test of time just as well as her designs; and the idea that fashion is inextricably wound up in the way we live has never felt more prescient. A decade ago, fashion was a rigid system. Different age groups knew about different labels and brands that were appropriate for their different incomes and different interests. Now, that way of life seems as archaic as wearing a bustle. For many women, fashion has become a sport, with trends and hemlines and style icons discussed like the football. While many have reveled in the chic cornucopia of fast-changing trends and the growing number of places to shop, just as many have felt overwhelmed. While working out what clothes are too frumpy, too sexy or too trendy has always been a problem for youth, the current generation has to do so in a world enthralled by the likes of Lady Gaga and Rihanna. Women who would once have retired gracefully from fashion's often fraught battlefield as their 30s faded now feel they should square their shoulders and carry on trying to keep up. It's unsurprising that as fashion for all ages has flourished, so too has the pressure to stay looking young. But this style upheaval has also given women more choice. With a little thought and confidence, it's possible for them to navigate fashion's minefield and even enjoy the process; whether in their teens, 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s!

50-ISH With age comes the authority to wear polished clothes that younger women often can't pull off, like pencil skirts and embellished buttondown shirts. At the same time, don't be afraid to show off the parts of your body of which you're most proud, like Sharon Stone in this sleek halter dress. Getting older can work to your advantage. Years also bring increased confidence and conviction, so let your clothes show off those qualities! No miniskirts after 40. And no long hair! Sleeveless after 50? Never! There are a lot of women who still believe in age-related fashion dictums, but in a world where everyone from 9 to 90 wears jeans, what does ‘age appropriate’ actually mean? In the end, the key to successfully looking age appropriate and modern is paying attention to what feels right on you. Take your cue from women who do it well, like Kate Moss, Phoebe Philo and Vera Wang. These are women who dress their age but still look innovative and, above all, like themselves.

20-ISH There's nothing wrong with showing some skin if you do it with grace and elegance. At an older age, you might have to resist either the short hem or the exposed shoulder, but for now, go all out like Beyonce and Blake Lively. Dress a little more modestly if it makes you comfortable, but remember, now is the time to dare to bare!

30-ISH Your 30s are the perfect time to build a simple core wardrobe while also experimenting with trend-driven items. Go for a vibrant dress with a bold neckline like Ginnifer Goodwin. Or be a little adventurous on your next night out and rock a metallic dress coat and caged heels like Gwyneth Paltrow.

40-ISH You've watched trends come and go, so pick chic pieces you know you look fabulous wearing. Go for classic shapes like the sheath dress (Demi Moore) and structured blazer (Halle Berry). And embrace playful yet timeless trends like animal prints for an unexpected punch that will make any outfit pop.

MAX&Co. FALL/WINTER 2017 COLLECTION LAUNCHES IN KUWAIT A celebration of colour, print and texture, this vibrant outing elevates the everyday in spectacular style.

The Fall/Winter 2017 MAX&Co. collection is all about the elevated everyday, with modern opulence given a pragmatic, utilitarian spin. Pieces are surprisingly versatile – easily dressed up and down – in a collection that draws subtle reference from both the ’40s and ’70s, while feeling thoroughly right for now. The overarching mood is eclectic, effortless elegance. Fluid silhouettes are enlivened by acidic florals, graphic stripes and rich jewel tones of coral, purple, orange and ochre. Painterly blooms create a mood of artistic bohemia. Midi-dresses are a collection stand-out, and transition seamlessly from day to evening; find their modest cuts enlivened with bold florals, a feminine take on camouflage and in graphic, colour block panels. Monochrome stripes are loosened up on separates and dresses, running in different directions. Materials are ultra-luxe – think shimmering metallics, slinky satins and sumptuous velvets – bringing a new decadence to day dressing. Ruffles and fringing are scattered throughout and heighten the tactile nature of the collection. A collection of contrasts, the romance finds itself alongside MAX&Co.’s stamp on this season’s utilitarian trend. Oversized patch pockets and multi-zip detailing work their way onto a knee-length skirt and a standout jumpsuit, a sleek, city-ready reimagining of overalls; a padded khaki poncho adds toughness to pretty dresses. Checks and tones of grey add a refreshed sophistication to tailoring, on fluted sleeve tops and co-ord sets. Those shades of grey develop into slivers and pewters for after dark, as slinky trousers, skinny knits and bustier dresses that are best worn layer over a lemon turtleneck. The varied collection is reflected in this season’s Il Mio Cappotto coat capsule. Five different coats are inspired by five different muses. The Rock Coat – a raw-edged wool coat in Prince of Wales check; the Glamour Coat – a fluffy mohair design; the Bohemian Coat – a romantic reimagining of a redingote; the Uptown Coat – a polished, preppy design; the Clever Coat – an oversized, single-breasted coat that exudes authority. The bold approach to colour is translated into this collection’s accessories offering. The blogger favourite Miss Juno bag collection returns for the new season emblazoned with graphic stripes or in blue and purple colour-block finishes. www.cpmagazine.net

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Directed by Edgar Wright Written by Edgar Wright

B

aby Driver is a slick, hip film. Oozing with cool tunes it starts off with its foot on the gas pedal but unfortunately, eases off midway through. It does so to allow for a love story which, at first, may seem sweet and innocent, but upon further deliberation becomes quite uncomfortable to think about. Although some moments are neat, if slightly unexpected, it’s not without foreshadow, typical story formulas and missteps.

Here come the spoilers! The film opens with a heist and Baby is introduced as the wheel man for a group running a bank heist with John Hamm aka ‘Buddy’, his wife ‘Darling’ and (should’ve had more screen time), Jon Bernthal. Music takes the forefront that really drives the film’s action. The music has a purpose for Baby which is explained with flashbacks showing a car accident in which his parents died and left him with severe tinnitus. So to drown out the ringing in his ears he is almost always listening to music. This is not a big deal as the film’s soundtrack is perhaps the best thing about the film. The first heist goes well and the team regroups with the ringleader Kevin Spacey, ‘Doc’, who divides up everyone’s take. During this scene Jon Bernthal really does a good job but the mantle gets transferred to Jamie Foxx’s character later in the film. Doc walks with Baby out to his car and it is revealed he owes Spacey a debt which is one job away from being paid off. So far so good. We have the setup, the essential one last job cliché and all should be well. It doesn’t take long for Spacey to call Baby for the last job and we get introduced to Jamie Foxx’s ‘Bats’ character. Bats brings a significant menace and film presence with his character. Bats and Baby are destined to butt heads and the script handles this very well. The second heist comes with its hiccups. Doc goes by the rule to never use the same crew twice so the team is made up of entirely new members. With this, we get some throwaway performances from Flea and Lanny Joon. No real issue here yet. Getting to it soon. The heist wraps up and Doc and Baby note they are square. Baby moves on to making a romantic connection with a waitress named Debora who works at the same diner his mother used to work for. Additionally she slightly resembles his mother and she even sings like his mother did. Sort of creepy and Doctor Freud would approve, but I hope I am not the only one who felt the mom and waitress 86

SEPTEMBER 2017

similarities wasn’t intentional. Personally I would have written fewer similarities, but I can let this one go as there is a bigger issue with the story as it follows the one last job cliché. Just when Baby thinks he has moved on from a life of crime, Doc shows up to tell him he has one last job. Baby wants to refuse, but he knows and respects the power Doc has and reluctantly agrees. Of course Baby intends to run away, but we get some good jump scares from Bats and Buddy on the eve of the heist. Doc is now reusing past team members, going against his rule, and brings Buddy and Darling along with Bats for this final job to rob cases of blank money orders from a Post Office. Now the surprises and tensions the director builds are splendid and the film hits all the right notes. Yet the final act sees Baby drive the car forward, impaling and killing a threatening Bats in his seat in the getaway car. STOP. You just took away the best character in the film! We’re now left with a slightly inferior level of madness with Buddy and Darling. This to me was like watching Darth Maul (the best part of that film) get ridiculously killed in ‘The Phantom Menace’ climax when he had ‘the high ground’. I mean, high ground doesn’t get much higher than George Lucas! But I’ll save that rant for another day! What should have happened is, at the last second, Bats twists and turns in his seat narrowly dodging death. Instead, the rebar goes through his passenger seat and impales Darling. You still get Buddy losing his wife and wanting revenge on Baby, and also keep Bats in play for the rest of the film. Now you have an epic three way Mexican standoff with two people coming after Baby and both trying to ensure each one is the one who gets to kill Baby. Bats never liked Baby, but since Baby butted heads with him earlier in the diner and now with Baby’s attempt to kill him, he will not stop until he kills Baby. Buddy can continue as he does in the film also trying to chase down Baby to avenge his wife. This creates a higher stakes dynamic and significantly raises the bar for Baby to stay one step ahead of them both. The film can end in the parking garage as it did, but with all three duking it out with cars and guns. Bats shoots Buddy to prevent him from being the one who kills Baby; and just when Bats is about to kill Baby, his head explodes all over Baby’s face. Buddy, barely alive, fires the shot to kill Bats. The final standoff between Baby and Buddy should end the same way as in the film with the movie continuing as normal from this point on. Now the film goes from good to great and gets repeat viewings as a result. Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

QUIET: THE POWER OF INTROVERTS IN A WORLD THAT CAN'T STOP TALKING

MORNINGSTAR: GROWING UP WITH BOOKS

by Susan Cain

A memoir about the magic and inspiration of books from a beloved and best-selling author. In her admired works of fiction, including the recent The Book that Matters Most, Ann Hood explores the transformative power of literature. Now, with warmth and honesty, Hood reveals the personal story behind these works of fiction. Growing up in a mill town in Rhode Island, in a household that didn’t foster the love of literature, Hood nonetheless learned to channel her imagination and curiosity by devouring The Bell Jar, Marjorie Morningstar, The Harrad Experiment, and other works. These titles introduced her to topics that could not be discussed at home: desire, fear, sexuality, and madness. Later, Johnny Got His Gun and The Grapes of Wrath influenced her political thinking as the Vietnam War became news; Dr. Zhivago and Les Miserables stoked her ambition to travel the world. With characteristic insight and charm, Hood showcases the ways in which books gave her life and can transform— even save—our own.

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer. Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie’s birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects. She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. TO SIRI WITH LOVE: A MOTHER, HER AUTISTIC SON, AND THE KINDNESS OF A MACHINE

IF THE CREEK DON'T RISE

by Michelle Kuo

A strikingly sincere portrait of a town and its buried secrets from an outstanding new voice in southern fiction. In a North Carolina mountain town filled with moonshine and rotten husbands, Sadie Blue is only the latest girl to face a dead-end future at the mercy of a dangerous drunk. She’s been married to Roy Tupkin for fifteen days, and she knows now that she should have listened to the folks who said he was trouble. But when a stranger sweeps in and knocks the world off-kilter for everyone in town, Sadie begins to think there might be more to life than being Roy’s wife. As stark and magnificent as Appalachia itself, If the Creek Don’t Rise is a bold and beautifully layered debut about a dusty, desperate town finding the inner strength it needs to outrun its demons. The folks of Baines Creek will take you deep into the mountains with heart, honesty, and homegrown grit.

Writer Judith Newman never had any illusions that her family was 'normal'. She and her husband keep separate apartments-his filled with twin grand pianos as befits a former opera singer; hers filled with the clutter and chaos of twin adolescent boys conceived late in life. And one of those boys is Gus, her sweet, complicated, autistic 13-year-old. With refreshing honesty, To Siri With Love chronicles one year in the life of Gus and the family around him a family with the same crazy ups and downs as any other. And at the heart of the book lies Gus's passionate friendship with Siri, Apple's 'intelligent personal assistant'. Unlike her human counterparts, Siri always has the right answers to Gus's incessant stream of questions about the intricacies of national rail schedules, or box turtle varieties, and she never runs out of patience. She always makes sure Gus enunciates and even teaches him manners by way of her warm yet polite tone and her programmed insistence on civility.

HAPPINESS: A MEMOIR: THE CROOKED LITTLE ROAD TO SEMI-EVER AFTER

THE CHICKENSHIT CLUB: WHY THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FAILS TO PROSECUTE EXECUTIVES

by Heather Harpham

by Jesse Eisinger

Happiness begins with a charming courtship between hopelessly attracted opposites: Heather, a world-roaming California girl, and Brian, an intellectual, homebody writer, kind and slyly funny but loath to leave his Upper West Side studio. Their magical interlude ends, full stop, when Heather becomes pregnant Brian is sure he loves her, only he doesn't want kids. Heather returns to California to deliver their daughter alone, buoyed by family and friends. Mere hours after Gracie's arrival, Heather's bliss is interrupted when a nurse wakes her, Get dressed, your baby is in trouble. This is not how Heather had imagined new motherhood alone, heartsick, an unexpectedly solo caretaker of a baby who smelled "like sliced apples and salted pretzels" but might be perilously ill. Brian reappears as Gracie's condition grows dire; together Heather and Brian have to decide what they are willing to risk to ensure their daughter sees adulthood.

From Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Jesse Eisinger, a blistering account of corporate greed and impunity, and the reckless, often anemic response from the Department of Justice. Why were no bankers put in prison after the financial crisis of 2008? Why do CEOs seem to commit wrongdoing with impunity? The problem goes beyond banks deemed “Too Big to Fail” to almost every large corporation in America—to pharmaceutical companies and auto manufacturers and beyond. The Chickenshit Club—an inside reference to prosecutors too scared of failure and too daunted by legal impediments to do their jobs—explains why. A character-driven narrative, the book tells the story from inside the Department of Justice. The complex and richly reported story spans the last decade and a half of prosecutorial fiascos, corporate lobbying, trial losses, and culture shifts that have stripped the government of the will and ability to prosecute top corporate executives.

THE WRONG WAY TO SAVE YOUR LIFE: ESSAYS

YOUNG JANE YOUNG

by Megan Stielstra

by Gabrielle Zevin

From an important new American writer comes this powerful collection of personal essays on fear, creativity, art, faith, academia, the Internet, and justice. In this poignant and inciting collection of literary essays, Megan Stielstra tells stories to ward off fears both personal and universal as she grapples toward a better way to live. In her titular piece “The Wrong Way To Save Your Life,” she answers the question of what has value in our lives—a question no longer rhetorical when the apartment above her family’s goes up in flames. “Here is My Heart” sheds light on Megan’s close relationship with her father, whose continued insistence on climbing mountains despite a series of heart attacks leads the author to dissect deer hearts in a poetic attempt to interrogate her own feelings about mortality.

Young Jane Young's heroine is Aviva Grossman, an ambitious Congressional intern in Florida who makes the life-changing mistake of having an affair with her boss who is beloved, admired, successful, and very married and blogging about it. When the affair comes to light, the Congressman doesn’t take the fall, but Aviva does, and her life is over before it hardly begins. She becomes a late‑night talk show punchline; she is slut‑shamed, labeled as fat and ugly, and considered a blight on politics in general. How does one go on after this? In Aviva’s case, she sees no way out but to change her name and move to a remote town in Maine. She tries to start over as a wedding planner, to be smarter about her life, and to raise her daughter to be strong and confident. But when, at the urging of others, she decides to run for public office herself, that long‑ago mistake trails her via the Internet like a scarlet A. For in our age, Google guarantees that the past is never, ever, truly past, that everything you’ve done will live on for everyone to know about for all eternity. And it’s only a matter of time until Aviva/Jane’s daughter, Ruby, finds out who her mother was, and is, and must decide whether she can still respect her. www.cpmagazine.net

Arjun Rampal Actor-producer Arjun Rampal opens up about his reel and real life tryst with Arun Gawli.

Arjun Rampal's much awaited film, ‘Daddy’ is a biopic on gangster-politician Arun Gawli. Besides co-producing the project, Rampal has also forayed into script writing with this movie. He has been credited for co-writing the screenplay along with director Ashim Ahluwalia. Explaining the new role, Rampal says, ‘Three years ago, someone approached me to play Gawli. I was taken aback because I didn't understand how they thought I'd fit the bill. They gave me a script that was far removed from Gawli's actual life. So, I refused to do it. But the idea stayed with me and I began researching about him. I was intrigued that he is called 'Daddy' and not 'Bhai' or 'Dada'. I started meeting people who knew him and decided to put pen and paper together. I locked myself in a hotel room for almost two months and started writing’. Rampal isn't new to writing although he has done it in a personal capacity, in the form of writing poetry and short stories. 'This was a completely different experience; it was the first time I wrote a screenplay. I had to make sure that it didn't turn out to be a propaganda film, where we showed him as a Good Samaritan; neither could he have been an out-and-out anti hero’. Arjun Rampal was invited by Google to their headquarters in California to release the trailer. Arjun and Ashim are happy with this special honour because the Bollywood superstar is just the fifth Indian film personality after Shah Rukh Khan, A R Rahman, Ajay Devgn and Kajol, to be accorded a special invite by Google! Also, this is the first time ever a Bollywood film's trailer was launched from the search-engine’s HQ in USA. Google Toxic, a key property of Google has invited only four Indian celebrities in the past to visit their office in California and now extended an invitation to Arjun to stream the trailer live and interact in a live chat with audiences across the globe; a move that is extraordinary in every sense as it allows Arjun to showcase Daddy to the world in a way that no film maker has ever done. Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Arjun said, `It's an honour to be invited to the world's most-sought after platform to unveil the trailer of my film Daddy. I thank Google for this. Daddy is special to me because it's not just another film that I have done; it has a lot of emotions associated with it on screen and off screen. By unveiling the trailer here I know I have created the maximum reach for it and I almost feel as if I have connected personally with each and every fan of mine. Honestly, I couldn't have asked for more on this occasion’. CP magazine was honored to meet Arjun Rampal during his press conference in Dubai last month and was lucky to get an opportunity to meet him and find out some inside information about the move for our readers. Special thanks go to Tehzeeb Ahmed and Briti Shah of Buzzy Bee Communications for their help in making this happen. 92

We hear you were planning a biopic on another gangster when you switched to doing one on Arun Gawli… Yes, three years ago, director Ashim Ahluwalia and I were planning a film on another don when some guys approached me to play Arun Gawli. They assured me that they had the rights and showed me some computer images which brought out the likeness between us. But the script was terrible, one of those completely fictitious accounts with none of the ‘realness’ of a biopic. I didn’t want to be this guy in a white-kurta pyjama and cap, climbing cables. Even the dialogues were filmi!

If everything was out of sync, how come you still stepped in? I started reading up on Gawli and found the material engrossing. The man had seen it all, his story spanned decades and I was hooked! What caught my imagination was that people call him ‘Daddy’. Usually they refer to a don as ‘bhai’ or ‘don’. I realised that although dreaded, he had another side which intrigued me.

The word is, you rewrote the script? I locked myself up in a hotel for two months and put a structure to the story and sent it to Ashim. Both of us then co-wrote the script. Somewhere along the way, the guys who’d approached me earlier didn’t have the rights so the project fizzled out. By then I’d done so much work on the script that I decided to produce it and approached his family, convincing them to give their nod. After that, I met the big man himself and got his blessings.

Tell us about your first interaction with Gawli. I met him when he was out on parole. The first few times, he was slightly sceptical and I understood that he’s reserved because of his colourful past. For him to accept that someone would be playing him in a film took some adjustment. Also, his story will be out while he’s still living.

What’s your take on him? He’s not flamboyant, doesn’t go to dance bars and blow money on bar girls and mistresses. He’s spent half his life in jail but is a Godfearing, family man. At home, there are photographs of Gods everywhere, he is always praying. He commands respect, thousands come to visit him when he’s on parole, yet he’s also dreaded. Mostly, he is quiet, well-mannered and soft-spoken, but you know he’s walked the dark side. After a few meetings, he started opening up to me. I assured him it wouldn’t be a propaganda story, I wanted to tell it the way it is, in a realistic manner. His consent convinced me this was a man with selfconfidence. He is the only guy who stood up to Dawood Ibrahim.

94

SEPTEMBER 2017

You started shooting before he had given his consent, why? We didn’t have a signed agreement but I’d spoken to his family. By the time he came out on parole, we’d finished one schedule. He was taken aback, wondering how I’d started without his official permission. I pointed out he’d verbally committed to me. He said, ‘Haan maine toh tujhe zabaan di thi’ (Yes, I had given you my words).

Why did you lock yourself away for a year-and-ahalf? You have to invest a lot to roles like this and Ashim made everything so realistic that during the duration of the shoot, I was living in a different world. Characters like this isolate you and when I was shooting, I rarely wanted to be around people. Even now, I’m tempted to tell someone in Gawli’s style, ‘Tujhe aake chamkaoon kya? (Shall I come to beat you).

How difficult or easy was it to find the rest of the cast for the movie? The casting was totally done by Ashim. Ashim had a very different criteria to choose the cast. He was not looking for stars but rather people who could really fit in the real characters. There are lots of real people (non-actors) in the movie. It's the first time you will see so many different kinds of people working together in a movie. Every time Ashim would cast someone, he would send me whole piles of information about them. Initially, I would give him my feedback but it came to a point where it was too much and I told him he was free to cast anyone he felt fit the role.

Apart from not going to the gym during the filming of the movie, did you go through any special diet or preparation? I had to lose weight. I had to eat much less and take smaller meals. I was running a lot. I had to lose lots of weight and lots of muscle as it was important to look like a normal guy.

We know that you have also written stories and poems. Are you planning to publish them one day? No, I have no such plans.

After this experience of script writing, are you thinking of writing another script? Actually, this happened very organically. It was very accidental. As I have said in all my interviews, I embarked on it in the process of doing my research on the character and as an actor, I wanted to act in the movie and wanted it to be real and less fictional. But, in general, I don't see myself becoming a scriptwriter.

Rado is known in the watchmaking world for its avantgarde designs and unexpected use of cutting-edge materials. The new DiaMaster Power Reserve now lets the beauty and craftsmanship of what lies inside a Rado also come to the fore. The 43 mm DiaMaster Power Reserve is crafted in either polished black or plasma high-tech ceramic, making it five times more scratch resistant than a comparable steel watch while being 25% lighter. The high-tech ceramic construction of the DiaMaster Power Reserve offers unparalleled comfort, with lightweight hypoallergenic surfaces that adapt readily to the wearer's skin temperature. The timepiece also offers the easy to read, wide-open dial that is characteristic of the Rado DiaMaster family. Embellished with a sunray pattern, the dial shines in either black or blue, with the power reserve indicator situated at 9 o' clock. Perhaps the most practical of all complications, the power reserve feature helps ensure peak performance for both you and your timepiece – while serving as a pleasant reminder of the technology within. A Rado timepiece is an object of wonder and fascination, both inside and out. This is particularly true for automatic watches, which derive their power from a tiny, complex mechanical engine. At the heart of this engine lies the mainspring: a metal coil that achieves peak power when most tightly wound. The amount of run time in the watch diminishes with the unwinding of the coil, gaining its power from rewinding as well as from the motions of the wearer’s wrist. Engineered to last up to 80 hours between wears, the DiaMaster Power Reserve features a réserve de marche indicator on the dial that lets you easily keep track of this remaining run time. Designed for the man on the go, the power reserve indicator lets you know when to take action to keep your Rado ticking: Simply give the watch a few winds when the power reserve hand drops too close to empty. With the new DiaMaster Power Reserve, you can be sure that time is always on your side.
