CRACK THE CODE

Gill Sherry

I

must confess I’m a stickler when it comes to dress code. Few things annoy me more than the casual disregard of an official dress code, be it for a wedding, business conference or formal event. Only last week I attended a fundraising ball for which ‘cocktail dress’ was the specified dress code. Sadly, only a handful of the two hundred ladies turned up in the correct attire, the majority opting to wear formal evening dress instead. In a world where information is available, quite literally, at the touch of a button, ignorance is no excuse; those unsure of the cocktail dress etiquette could quite easily have researched it rather than disrespecting their host and ignoring the stated policy. Dress codes are specified for a reason. From the host’s point of view, they ensure that a certain standard of dress is observed. However, they are also there for the avoidance of doubt allowing guests to dress appropriately safe in the knowledge they won’t stick out like the proverbial sore thumb. For me, the very mention of ‘cocktail dress’ conjures an image of a short glitzy frock paired with strappy heels and a sequinned clutch. It suggests a party atmosphere which is neither too formal nor too casual but requires maximum effort by the guests to arrive looking stylish and chic. But this particular dress code is perhaps the most flexible and can include jumpsuits, skirt suits and short skirts as well as the favoured strappy dress. By contrast, I’ve lost count of the number of ‘evening dress’ events I’ve attended where there have been more short dresses than long. If evening dress is the specified dress code, the host is expecting long evening gowns - not short, party frocks more suited to a Dubai night club. Contrary to what a designated dress code may suggest, it is not 14

SEPTEMBER 2019

designed to clip your creative wings and curtail your personal style. Regardless of whether the ticket states ‘cocktail dress’ or ‘evening dress’ (or any other code) there are still endless ways to personalise your look and avoid drowning in a sea of conformity. Avoid the traditional black evening dress and choose a brightly coloured gown (glistening green, brilliant blue or radiant red) or turn heads in a metallic cocktail dress with sequins or tassels. You can even decorate your hair with jewells and make a statement with eye catching jewellery. Of course, it’s not just women who get it wrong when it comes to dress code. Men are also guilty of the odd faux pas regarding costume etiquette. Despite the obvious descriptions such as black tie, white tie or dinner jacket, men still fail to observe the correct dress code, pushing the boundaries of tradition and, in doing so, disrespecting their hosts. Black tie means black tie, the very name announcing a formal occasion with no room for doubt. Similarly, ‘morning dress’ or ‘lounge suit’ are indicative of what is required with little or no margin for error. Naturally, everyone wants to look their best when attending parties and events but modifying your understanding of the dress code or worse still, ignoring it altogether, shows blatant disregard to the host. Dressing inappropriately also highlights your ignorance when it comes to etiquette and tradition, an obvious sign of discourtesy or, at the very least, naivety. Admittedly, event hosts are sometimes the authors of their own misfortune. If, for example, they fail to include a dress code on their tickets/invitations, then they can’t complain when guests are not dressed as expected. Dress codes should always be absolutely clear. And, regardless of the occasion, if you’re in any doubt about the dress code, ask the host what he/she expects. Adhering to the dress code is a sign of good manners and it’s better to be remembered for your graciousness than it is for your contempt.

Universo Ferrari exhibition opens

Universo Ferrari opens its doors today. This is the first exhibition dedicated to the world of Ferrari in the brand's historic location with a series of exclusive tours being held throughout the month of September. A long-awaited event for customers, fans and Ferrari enthusiasts alike, the exhibition will take place on the Fiorano race circuit, in a large structure where the various activities that render Ferrari so unique are represented in all their glory. An unprecedented exhibition itinerary offers visitors a fully immersive experience, enabling them to gain a close-up of a legend and universal symbol that is amongst the strongest brands in the world. The itinerary begins with the overriding passion of Ferrari's founder, where it all began: racing. At the centre of a large hall, visitors come face to face with the SF90, the singleseater currently being used in the F1 Championship, representing the Scuderia Ferrari, the most successful Formula 1 team ever, this year celebrating its 90th anniversary. In the adjacent room, visitors tap into the history of the brand through one of its most fascinating stories. We are in the "Ferrari Classiche", the famous workshop where Ferrari models are transformed into automotive icons by experts who restore and maintain these cars to perfection. The undisputed star of this room is the 250 GTO from 1962, one of Ferrari's most famous cars coveted by many a collector. Owning a Ferrari goes far beyond the value and beauty of the car itself; it marks entry into a special community. This community is explored in the next room, which is divided into two spaces that illustrate two sides of the same passion. The first of these - dedicated to the Ferrari lifestyle - is highlighted by the presence of a 2016 LaFerrari Aperta, popular amongst customers whose driving pleasure is intrinsically linked to the unique and exclusive journeys they can embark upon in their cars. The second area - dedicated to the spirit of competition - features a 2017 FXX-K Evo for those whose focus is on maximum performance. Thus, the exhibition delves into the countless events and programmes originating from these two sides of Ferrari customers: GT lifestyle and Corse Clienti & Competizioni GT. Closed-wheel championship is another important element within the Universo Ferrari. Here, the trophy won this year by Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans takes centre stage, alongside a 488 GTE. Exceptionally, as the crowning glory of the exhibition, the entire Ferrari range will be on display to be enjoyed by the general public. In 2019, this collection is richer and more complete than ever before. The SF90 Stradale is the very latest model in this stunning line-up, the first series-production hybrid supercar in the history of Ferrari. www.cpmagazine.net

AUDEMARS PIGUET’S NEW MILLENARY FROSTED GOLD PHILOSOPHIQUE

This autumn, Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacturer Audemars Piguet encourages women to re-appropriate time. Inspired by the aesthetics of 17th-century single-hand timepieces, the new Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique tells time…philosophically! This design watch is a statement of creative freedom and free-spirited individuality. In defiance of the rush and frenzy of today’s world, the Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique puts time on women’s side, its single hand defying contemporary conventions of time measurement. As François-Henry Bennahmias explains, “At Audemars Piguet, we have always charted our own course, following our firm convictions and starting our independent trends, even during times of crisis. We continue today with our new Millenary Philosophique. This watch takes a break from the rushing minutes of our world and invites you to set your own tempo.” This abstract watch has been meticulously hand-finished by our watchmakers, in the highest respect of Audemars Piguet’s traditions. The 18-carat pink or white gold case presents alternating satin brushing and Frosted Gold finishing, a technique Audemars Piguet owes to Florentine jewellery designer Carolina Bucci. The diamonddust effect it creates results from hours of meticulous micro-hammering.

Fay Al-Zouman Rawan Al Thunayan “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Hi, could you introduce yourself in a few words? Fay: Hi, my name is Fay Al-Zouman and I’m the co-founder of Reyathena. I’m 23 years old and I’m a hard-core adrenaline junkie! Rawan: My name is Rawan Al Thunayan and I’m the co-founder of Reyathena. Tell us about your education: Fay: I studied business, which is something that I swore I would never do. However, I wouldn’t be where I am today without it! Rawan: I studied Industrial and Management Systems Engineering at Kuwait University.

The biggest struggle has been creating the tech part. We launched the Reyathena website in December 2018. We were originally supposed to launch it in November 2016. That’s why we took it upon ourselves to learn how to code so we could take matters into our own hands. How has been the help of your family in what you are doing? Were they supportive since the beginning? Our families have been extremely supportive from the beginning. They have always believed in Reyathena and really valued the positive impact that it would have on the community.

Who are your top 3 heroes and why? Fay: My mom, my mom, my mom! My ultimate, biggest role model is my mom, because she’s an absolute genius in everything she does. If I can grow to be a quarter of the woman she is, I’d be more than happy Rawan: I don’t have specific heroes. I look up to and get inspired by all those around me who successfully achieve their goals, by surpassing all the hardship What got you interested in what you’re doing? and obstacles they face along the way for the sake Fay: Sports has always been my passion. Mohammad Bin Hasan Hi, could you introduce yourself in a few words? My name is Mohammad Bin Hasan. My life mission is to ask meaningful questions to myself and others, encouraging continuity of expressing and growing through mindful movement. Tell us about your education: I graduated from Western Sydney University as an Electrical Engineer. I have gained my position in the Dean's List of Excellence for the final year project that contributed to the next generation of technology, 5G. I continue to study health with OPEX Coaching Institute. What is it exactly that you do? My governmental job is that of a preventive maintenance electrical engineer. However, I am learning, applying and teaching ways to move via my personal training business, WarriorActs. I do that through the ANIMAL FLOW discipline. This encourages us to go back to primal moves with fluidity of movement by moving opposite sides of the body together in a functional pattern. Also, I apply these methods into my part-time adventure guide role in Oman with Husaak and caving rescue trainees. Taking people to the wild and going to the depth of the land and walking in long stretches on Arabian land aids them, as well as me, to remember how to adopt from our land and how the land shaped our ancestors. In summary I believe that movement is a way of expression and I encourage and teach movement as a way to express ones true self. What got you interested in what you’re doing? My history of being a heavy child and experiencing different sports. Throughout my childhood as a heavy child, there was a culture of only looking good. Sport was to either look lean or lose fat but never for correcting posture or a way of expression. During my adulthood I have done eight years of MMA (mixed martial arts), 1 year of rugby union in Australia, 1 year of handball in Australia, ultra running (RunKuwait in 2013 covering 250km in 5 days), and 3 years of competitive crossfit in Kuwait (being in Battle of the East as a team member for 2017 and 2018). I noticed that injuries are high and competitive participants of these sports don't sustain good healthy living later in their life. During a trip to Miami, I met a new culture of movers where they focus on primal moves like squatting, running and walking, allowing connecting tissues to function. It is not competitive but focuses on utilizing all joints and moving the body in all directions gaining mobility of strength in all ranges of movements possible for the body. When I came back to Kuwait I took an Animal Flow course and started applying Methodology of Anatomy training into WarriorActs workouts. The aim is to live longer, utilize your body and express your abilities through movement. What makes you unique or special in what you are doing? What makes me unique is that I utilize the ancient

knowledge of how feelings are connected to the ability of movement. Science shows the connectivity of the nerve system, fascia and muscles together. So, a journey into WarriorActs is really a journey into reclaiming the body's abilities and through it, unblocking the mind and heart. In the Animal Flow practice we flow effortlessly using body weight, this can only be done through this practice. Many ancient teachings talked about the connection between feelings and body health. In WarriorActs we approach the person as a whole and train not only the body but emotions and the mind too. Tell us your journey to where you have reached today. How was the initial struggle? Now I am a freelancer at the Burrow Life Gym and expanding the culture of movement through COMMUNITY FLOW. Community flow is a tour around GCC to expand awareness of Animal Flow and raise to the surface the unique invdividuals in field movement in the region. My initial struggles were finding a place to practice movement training. It is a new concept so crossfit gyms did not recognise it and other gyms did not understand it. To this day it is still a question mark in peoples’ heads but it is slowly changing. Also, society did not accept females doing this movement and males rejected it because it was not useful to reach ‘look good’ shape. In terms of hiking and caving, people would say "what is the use?" or "waste of time and money" but with each day and each trip they come with me with Husaak and they see and feel the change. How has been the help of your family in what you are doing? Were they supportive since the beginning? My family is supportive of whatever makes me happy. My dad, however, is always supportive to move. He encouraged me to find my happy movement. Coming from a black belt in three different martial arts he saw the benefit of this new approach to fitness and health. Who are your top 3 heroes and why? My top heroes are people alive today. Dan Millman, an author, Olympic gymnast and coach of gymnastics team because he is a living example of living well values. Jody Gall, my mentor and crossfit coach in Australia because he went through different sports that were not easy for him to do well. However, he did well because he put in the effort needed to achieve excellence. Throughout his journey he found his passion in crossfit and in enhancing the quality of peoples’ lives through it. Cameron Shane, because he made something new out of different sports and called it Budokon. He is living life as it should be lived, expanding and exploring human potential of movement and awareness every day. What are some of the challenges you are facing in your field and how are you overcoming them? The challenges I went through were more personal and

opposite from society. There were boundaries on how to move certian ways. In Animal Flow we imitate animals and that made people want to laugh. However, opposite to this is that primal moves actually express the strength and mobility of the body. It is actually how you would move in the wild. What advice or mentorship made a difference in your career? I would say there are two people that made a difference and continue to do so. Jody Gall, he mentors me by always encouraging mindful questions. It started with "what is your purpose in life?" Also , Ali Husaak. Working as an adventure guide with him I learnt a lot. Most importantly, "leadership is uniting people to serve one goal" and that makes miracles. How would your friends describe you? My friends describe me as always innovative in movement, having contemporary ways to look into social, health and relationship issues; a researcher of truth in emotions and motion. What are some of your hobbies? My career is my hobby. In addition, I love growing plants. What are some of your top achievements? Running 250km with team RunKuwait 2013. Also, establishing WarriorActs and bringing culture of movement to Kuwait. What are your plans or goals for the future? The plan is to make Kuwait a centre of movement knowledge, where people would come to visit me and other Kuwaitis who are experts in correcting movements and creating new ways to move the human body. A bigger goal is to empower other young Arabs in GCC to gain knowledge and practice it and to make the region a leader in the area of human movement. How did it feel to be chosen for this award? It makes me feel appreciated with a sense of achievement. Your message for other young and talented people out there: Leading is believing in your goals. Don't wait for the perfect moment, start and be consistent. Most of all have integrity in what you say and do. Tell us about a dream that you would like to fulfill or make it a reality: Having a movers space where people can come and practive this new way of movement. Also, to innovate new ways of movement that allow people to elevate their human potential.

Hind Bassaj Hi, could you introduce yourself in a few words? My name is Hind Bassaj. I am a Kuwaiti national who was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon. I am someone who loves to get out of my comfort zone, curious about what the world has to offer. I absolutely love to travel and discover new places, cultures and people. I try to stay positive even when things aren’t really smiling back at me. I like to take care of animals and I would never say no to pizza! Tell us about your education: I graduated from school with a French Baccalaureate in Literature. I carried on with a BA in Political Science and a Minor in Communication from the American University of Beirut (AUB). I then pursued a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and my Masters in Law from London. What is it exactly that you do? Currently I am working at SSH, an architectural and engineering consultancy firm. My job is to review contracts and agreements. However, I only have a few weeks before leaving my job since I submitted my resignation letter to pursue bigger goals. What got you interested in what you’re doing? At school I had a very inspiring history professor who led me to appreciate the topic and got me interested in studying political science. I like analyzing events and putting them into perspective by choosing them as topics to write about. What led me to pursue law was advertising. After graduating from AUB I interned in an advertising company for a month and realized that if I could write briefs about chips and sodas, why not do it for human rights and causes I believe in? What makes you unique or special in what you are doing? Whether I am at work or at school or anywhere else, I empathize with others and would always think that if I were in their shoes, this is how I would want to be treated. So when I work on something or help out a friend or colleague, I do it with all my heart as if it were me who was receiving that favour or help. Tell us your journey to where you have reached today. How was the initial struggle? It wasn’t always easy to figure out what to do next. After graduating I immediately enrolled in an MA but after interning in the advertising company I realized I had rushed with my choice because it did not really correspond to what I had in mind. I would say that the biggest struggle is the emptiness felt when I don’t have it figured out right after I’ve finished a degree, a job or an internship. Now I am getting a hold of the importance of taking a step back, appreciating what was done in order to keep moving forward instead of simply rushing through these main stages. How has been the help of your family in what you are

doing? Were they supportive since the beginning? I am very thankful that my family has been supportive since day one. If I had a moment of uncertainty they would comfort me and remind me to follow my ambition no matter where it is. I am lucky to have them around for this kind of encouragement. Who are your top 3 heroes and why? Not to sound cliché but my number one hero is my mother. She is with me every step of the way. Even at my lowest moments she gets me back on track and encourages me to keep going. My second hero would be my grandfather, who deceased when I was 14. Sadly, I did not get enough time to really know him while he was alive as he was fighting with Alzheimer’s disease. However, I heard about his achievements from my grandmother and mother. He was a Lebanese politician back in the 50s. He studied law in France and knew how to inspire people through his speeches and writing. Hero number 3 is actually heroes. They are my Palestinian friends whom I met during my studies in London and who are currently living inside the occupied territories. One of them is living in Gaza and the other in the West Bank. For me, these two people are survivors. They did not give up on their cause or their country and put their knowledge into practice in finding a solution. What are some of the challenges you are facing in your field and how are you overcoming them? Right now the main challenge I face is the lack of experience in my field. Because I went straight into pursuing my postgraduate studies I did not have the opportunity to gather much on-the-ground experience and in the legal field the more exposure one has the better. However, I try not to get affected by this because when I look back at what I’ve accomplished I am proud of the person I am today and grateful for the knowledge and exposure I received. Experience comes with time and I believe I am on the right path even if it is hard to stay motivated sometimes. What advice or mentorship made a difference in your career? Everything happens for a reason. I used to get frustrated if I did not end up where I wanted to be but with time I really learned that sometimes things happen that are beyond our control even though we feel we gave our maximum. So the good advice is to always be the best version of yourself. Do the maximum you can do in that situation and the rest will fall into place to your own benefit. How would your friends describe you? They would say I am caring, compassionate, fun to be around and chill. What are some of your hobbies? I have a strong passion for dancing. In fact, I even started to teach dance classes in Kuwait for a while. I also enjoy playing tennis, swimming and reading books, mainly

French novels. What are some of your top achievements? I was chosen to be part of an internship program at the New York State Supreme Court. For me this was like living a dream because New York is a beautiful city full of energy and always buzzing. The opportunity for me to experience it for three months by shadowing a Supreme Court judge was simply outstanding and taught me a lot on a personal level. I am also proud of completing the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) in London. This diploma is an intensive oneyear law degree that is equivalent to three years of law school. It is a program designed for people wanting a career change to become a lawyer in the UK. Apart from the fact that I was adapting to being away from home for the first time, the GDL was extremely tough because the materials were very rich and had to be memorized in such a short amount of time. But it was all worth it. What are your plans or goals for the future? Right now I am focused on gaining experience in order to put into practice the knowledge I’ve gained along the way. How did it feel to be chosen for this award? I was surprised to have been chosen for this award. It warms my heart to meet people who believe in each other’s potential and, most importantly, who support one another in their journey. Your message for other young and talented people out there: Don’t wait around for the moment to happen and do not worry if nothing is making sense at this stage. Instead, embrace the uncertainty and turn it to your advantage by pursuing what you are truly passionate about. Work on developing your career because now is the best time to make a strong impression. And, most importantly, do not lose motivation along the way! Your favourite quote: “We meet our destiny often by ways we take to avoid it.” – La Fontaine. I grew up reading Jean De La Fontaine’s fables. He is a French fabulist and poet. I enjoy his fables because one could extract a lesson from each one of them. Tell us about a dream that you would like to fulfill or make it a reality: I would really like to host my own talk-show, to discuss social issues, art, sports, books, etc. Perhaps host inspiring individuals who achieved something particular in their lives and somehow made an impact. To host celebrities, public figures, intellectuals, leaders, creators, etc. For that I would ideally want to have travelled the world or at least a big part of it in order to cover or discuss various countries and expose different cultures on the show.

quality of services and food. It also gives the guests a great privilege to enjoy the wide variety of dining options with the biggest food and beverage offerings in town.

I Graduated in 2006, a Double Major in Marketing and Economy from University of Jordan. I started my career with InterContinental Hotels Group in Muscat, Oman in 2012 at InterContinental Muscat as Assistant Director of Sales.

What was the biggest achievement of your If you have only one weekend in Kuwait career? as a first-time visitor, in this limited time, Being the youngest Head of Department what are the best things you suggest to appointed as Director of Sales and Marketing do around the hotel?

Please tell us a few words about your career in the hospitality industry. How did it all begin? My aim was, in fact, to work in the advertising field so I started to apply my resume in my last semester in university. Meanwhile, a friend referred my resume to Marriott Hotels in Amman, Jordan, where I had no clue about hospitality! I did the interview and was accepted as Event Executive in November 2006. I started to love my job and to realize the importance of hospitality. Every single person at the hotel works to serve guests and pay their full attention to satisfy the guests based on their needs.

Could you tell us about the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Al Thuraya City's overall concepts? Actually, it is a complex full of entertainment for all guests regardless of age. It has three levels of Gym and Health Club open 24/7 including Luxury Spa Aquatonic (awarded as Best Spa Design in Kuwait) where guests are disconnected from the world and feel reborn! There are also nine restaurants with different cuisines, such as Japanese, seafood, Indian, Iranian, Lebanese, American, International buffet and much more. Whether for business or leisure purposes, the location of the hotels is the most convenient among all hotels in Kuwait. Located only five minutes away from Kuwait International Airport, and 7 minutes from the Avenues Mall (and the same for 360 Mall) and close by the Government sector, guests are guaranteed easy access for both hotels and away from city traffic.

What are the advantages of having two hotels at one location? It’s a privilege for the guests to have two options. Both the Crowne Plaza or Holiday Inn Kuwait, Al Thuraya City would match the traveller’s budget but has the same level of 44

Having two brands under the same complex with ten food and beverage dining options. Also, the accessibility of the airport and shopping malls. Al Thuraya City simply has something special for everyone and is very convenient for both business travellers or families looking for a weekend getaway.

Could you tell us about the different dining options available at both hotels? We have an extensive variety of outlets. Nokhaza Seafood, Shabestan Iranian food, Ahmadi all day dining, Sakura Japanese cuisine, AyamZaman and Ayam Zaman express Lebanese cuisine.

For sure, my mobile!

What are the biggest challenges marketing teams in the hotel business face today? The external factors we cannot control are the biggest challenge. Such regulations and decisions would affect the marketing plan; for example, the unrest situation in the region. Also, the aggressive competition between hotels nowadays as there is a new hotel every day and that is what makes the competition very aggressive.

Spa Aquatonic is a unique concept, exceptional in quality and originality of its services contributing to the high-end positioning of an establishment in which it is integrated and so differentiates it from others. Boasting 17 spacious treatment rooms in a relaxing atmosphere with soft lighting and its one-of-akind calming yet invigorating 650m2Aquatonic pool, making it the biggest in the world, promising no less than an extravagant and personalized pampering experience helping

putting a smile on a guest’s face by delivering the highest standards of hospitality. But, most importantly, it’s when we achieve something big as one team and one family. Most difficult: Life balance between work and personal. Being in the hospitality industry means you have to be available 24 hours so it’s not easy to maintain your work-lifebalance lifestyle. That said, with the right time management and effort it can be successfully managed.

Jessica Jarlvi “Anything is possible.”

Swedish born Jessica Jarlvi is the best-selling author of two novels, When I Wake Up and What Did I Do? Now based in Dubai, she is working on her third psychological thriller, due to be published next year. Read on to discover the story of her success and why reading is just as important as writing.

Gill Sherry

Please introduce yourselves to our readers: Originally Swedish, I have spent the last twenty years living in different countries, working in publishing and PR, but I have always been writing. In 2016, I was a winner in a competition and signed with a literary agent. Since then, I’ve had two psychological thrillers published.

Tell us about your educational/career background: I have a BSc (Hons) degree in Publishing and Business and a Masters in Creative Writing.

What made you want to be a writer? Books had a great impact on me growing up – they opened up my world and made me more compassionate, I think, because they demonstrated that everyone is different and has a unique story. I wanted to write novels to entertain, but also to shed light on issues.

Do you have a favourite book/author? I admire so many authors. At the top of my head, I’d have to say Toni Morrison, Joyce Carol Oates and Margaret Atwood.

Where did you get the idea for your first novel? It was more like several ideas coming together in one book, but the inspiration emerged when I walked through a small, dark town and had a ‘what if?’ moment. What if something happened? How would it play out in this small town?

chapter in advance - so I do most of the research along the way, which will shape the plot too.

You touch on issues such as mental health and OCD. Was it important for you to raise awareness of such issues? Absolutely. We need to have a conversation about these issues, not stigmatise them. How will people come forward and seek help otherwise?

Many authors struggle to get published. What advice would you give them? Keep writing and pitching. Writing a full novel requires stamina and dedication. It takes time to complete a novel and to edit it. If you’ve done this and you still don’t have a publishing deal, then make sure you’ve sent it to everyone who might be interested. If you have, then either look at the novel again with fresh eyes (preferably leaving it in a drawer for a month first), or write a new novel. To get published, it might take a few attempts. The trick is to not give up!

48

SEPTEMBER 2019

What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Hang out with my family. My husband and I have four children so our house is always buzzing! Should I ever have a quiet moment, I read. I devour fiction in various genres, and also books on mindfulness.

Describe your ideal writing environment: Ideally at home, surrounded by peace and quiet. But that is not my reality. So I write where and when I can – quite often in cafés between dropping off or picking up my children.

How long does it take you to write a novel, from start to finish? My first novel took a year, the second one three months, but the one I’m working on at the moment is taking longer. I had a baby last year which has meant less time writing (and sleeping!).

Tell us about the Montegrappa Prize:

When can we expect to read your third novel?

After predominately writing fiction in Swedish, I began to write a novel in English, which I then submitted to the Montegrappa First Fiction competition at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature in Dubai. It was judged by a UK literary agent and I spent ages writing and re-writing those first chapters. On the day they announced the winners, it was magic hearing my now agent read an extract from my book, and getting up on stage to collect the prize.

Hopefully next year.

How much time do you spend on research for How do you enjoy Dubai? your books? Once inspiration strikes, I spend a few days doing research, and then I begin to write. I’m more of an intuitive writer - I’m not someone who plans every

many different cultures.

I’ve lived in Dubai for a few years and it’s been an interesting time. I love how international the community is, which has helped me learn about

If you had one piece of advice for aspiring writers, what would it be? You write because you can’t live without writing. That means that no matter how many rejections you receive, you keep writing. Also, read as much as possible. That way, you learn what works and what doesn’t and that helps you edit your own books.

Do you have a message for the team at CP Magazine and our readers? Always follow your dreams and don’t listen to anyone who says you can’t.

HOW TO TREAT ACNE SCARS Sana Mrad

Scars are formed when a breakout penetrates the skin deeply and damages the tissues beneath it. Before you start any treatment for acne scars, it’s important to be seen by a dermatologist. They can help you determine the best method to reduce the appearance of your scars and also make sure that the marks on your skin are actually scars and not another condition.

54

SEPTEMBER 2019

*Alpha hydroxy acids AHAs are often found in products made to treat acne since they help to remove dead skin and prevent clogged pores. Even better, AHAs can also help acne scars appear less noticeable.

*Lactic acid Lactic acid peels once every two weeks for three months can improve the texture, appearance and pigmentation of the skin and lighten acne scars. There are countless peels, serums and ointments with lactic acid but you can choose to use diluted apple cider vinegar as a toner or spot treatment thanks to its natural lactic acid.

*Retinoids Retinoids are another acne treatment with scarsmoothing benefits. In addition to speeding up your cell regeneration and improving your skin’s texture, retinoids can also help reduce discoloration and make scars less noticeable. However, they can also make your skin especially sensitive to the sun. Always wear sunscreen when using anything that contains retinoids.

*Salicylic acid This clears pores, reduces swelling and redness, and exfoliates the skin. It’s considered to be one of the best treatments for acne scars. It might take a few weeks to see a difference when using salicylic acid and it can also cause dryness or irritation. Again, it’s vital to wear sunscreen every day over scars. Sun exposure can darken scars or make them more noticeable.

*Dermabrasion Dermabrasion is one of the most effective and common treatments for facial scars. Similar to the microdermabrasion kits you use at home, healthcare providers use a wire brush or a wheel to more deeply exfoliate the top layer of the skin.

*Chemical peels Chemical peel is a strong acid that’s used to remove the top layer of the skin to reduce deeper scars. Some chemical peels are mild enough to be used at home but your healthcare provider can provide a stronger solution with more dramatic results. There are many different types of chemical peels, so it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider about which one is right for you.

*Laser resurfacing This treatment typically has a faster healing time than other resurfacing treatments. However, you have to keep the area covered with a bandage until it’s completely healed. This treatment is also not a good option for anyone still prone to breakouts and it is less effective on darker skin tones.

*Fillers Healthcare providers use fillers to fill in acne scars and help even out the skin. The fillers can be made with collagen, your own fat, or a commercial filler. They’re injected under the surface of the skin to help plump up and smooth out depressed scars. Most fillers last between 6 and 18 months before they need to be redone, but some are permanent.

*Microneedling This newer treatment uses a small, handheld, needlestudded roller or handheld ‘pen’ on the surface of the scars. Microneedling helps reduce the depth of acne scars but it may take up to 9 months to see changes

*Injections There are a few different medications that can be injected into raised scars to help soften and flatten them including corticosteroids and chemotherapy drugs fluorouracil (5-FU) and interferons. The injections are usually performed as a series with one every few weeks. Acne is the most common skin problem in the United States and many people who suffer with acne later find themselves with acne scars. Acne scars are actually part of the healing process, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). After acne has cleared, the skin attempts to correct the damage caused by the blemish. By producing collagen, it heals the skin. Too little collagen and you’re left with a concave scar. Too much, and you’ll have a raised scar. ZAINA EL-SAID Words: José Berrocoso

“My upbringing was divided between tribal/military atmosphere as well as artists and designers. Thus, my artwork followed a similar pattern. In my work a central character (hero or authority figure) leads the work and is interwoven within a story of patterns, ideas, architecture and details that belong to completely different origins. I focus on creating harmony through differences and create oneness from contrast of colour and ideas to convey the importance of trascending differences if one is to focus on beauty.”

Zaina El-Said was born in 1978 in Jordan. She completed her higher education in 2001 from the American Intercontinental University in London. Between travels and missions between Europe, America and Russia, it wasn’t until year 2010 that Zaina settled back in Amman and took up arts as her career path. Being brought up in a family of artists it seemed destined she would eventually follow the household footprints. Zaina began painting, mainly drawn to geometry and calligraphy, but it wasn’t until 2014 that she took a major turn and delved into the world of collage art. Using different material on canvas was a starting point which led to creating whole pieces from cut out magazines, newspapers, CD covers and any available material

she found. It was the different textures and eclectic and surreal result that she was drawn to achieve. Collage art was a way in assembling worlds from already existing places and people. Moving forward with the collage technique, Zaina switched to digital collage and transformed her works to digital and managed to mix both digital and hand cut together in her works. Zaina’s collage art focuses on assembling many worlds into one, usually led by a protagonist; she focuses on mixing world cultures, architecture, motifs, archaeology, arts and nature into a single portrait to convey that human innovation complements one another harmoniously with nature. Her works can be described as surreal, symmetrical, colourful and full of patterns. www.cpmagazine.net

THE CHESTNUT MAN

YALE NEEDS WOMEN

by Søren Sveistrup

by Anne Gardiner Perkins

The heart-pounding debut from the creator of the hit Scandinavian television show The Killing. If you find one, he’s already found you. A psychopath is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a “chestnut man” a handmade doll made of matchsticks and two chestnuts which he leaves at each bloody crime scene. Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister’s daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago. A tragic coincidence or something more twisted? To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man’s gruesome clues. Because it’s clear that the madman is on a mission that is far from over.

“If Yale was going to keep its standing as one of the top two or three colleges in the nation, the availability of women was an amenity it could no longer do without.” In the summer of 1969, from big cities to small towns, young women across the country sent in applications to Yale University for the first time. The Ivy League institution dedicated to graduating “one thousand male leaders” each year had finally decided to open its doors to the nation’s top female students. The landmark decision was a huge step forward for women’s equality in education.

THE INSTITUTE

A SINGLE THREAD

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy—who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon. They are all in Front Half. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, “like the roach motel,” Kalisha says. “You check in, but you don’t check out.”

1932. After the Great War took both her beloved brother and her fiancé, Violet Speedwell has become a "surplus woman," one of a generation doomed to a life of spinsterhood after the war killed so many young men. Yet Violet cannot reconcile herself to a life spent caring for her grieving, embittered mother. After countless meals of boiled eggs and dry toast, she saves enough to move out of her mother's place and into the town of Winchester, home to one of England's grandest cathedrals. There, Violet is drawn into a society of broderers women who embroider kneelers for the Cathedral, carrying on a centuries-long tradition of bringing comfort to worshippers. Violet finds support and community in the group, fulfillment in the work they create, and even a growing friendship with the vivacious Gilda. But when forces threaten her new independence and another war appears on the horizon, Violet must fight to put down roots in a place where women aren't expected to grow. Told in Chevalier's glorious prose, A Single Thread is a timeless story of friendship, love, and a woman crafting her own life.

THE TESTAMENTS

PERMANENT RECORD by Edward Snowden

More than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets. As Atwood unfolds The Testaments, she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is, and how far she will go for what she believes.

In 2013, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Snowden shocked the world when he broke with the American intelligence establishment and revealed that the United States government was secretly pursuing the means to collect every single phone call, text message, and email. The result would be an unprecedented system of mass surveillance with the ability to pry into the private lives of every person on earth. Six years later, Snowden reveals for the very first time how he helped to build this system and why he was moved to expose it. Spanning the bucolic Beltway suburbs of his childhood and the clandestine CIA and NSA postings of his adulthood, Permanent Record is the extraordinary account of a bright young man who grew up online a man who became a spy, a whistleblower, and, in exile, the Internet's conscience. Written with wit, grace, passion, and an unflinching candor, Permanent Record is a crucial memoir of our digital age and destined to be a classic.

The Dutch House

The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and selfassured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from, and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures. Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they’re together. Throughout their lives they return to the well worn story of what they’ve lost with humor and rage. But when at last they’re forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested.

In July 2015, a young black woman named Sandra Bland was pulled over for a minor traffic violation in rural Texas. Minutes later she was arrested and jailed. Three days later, she committed suicide in her cell. What went wrong? Talking to Strangers is all about what happens when we encounter people we don't know, why it often goes awry, and what it says about us. How do we make sense of the unfamiliar? Why are we so bad at judging someone, reading a face, or detecting a lie? Why do we so often fail to 'get' other people? Through a series of puzzles, encounters and misunderstandings, from little-known stories to infamous legal cases, Gladwell takes us on a journey through the unexpected. You will read about the spy who spent years undetected at the highest levels of the Pentagon, the man who saw through the fraudster Bernie Madoff, the suicide of the poet Sylvia Plath and the false conviction of Amanda Knox. You will discover that strangers are never simple.

Ann Patchett

She moved to Nashville, Tennessee when she was six, where she continues to live. Patchett said she loves her home in Nashville with her doctor husband and dog. If asked if she could go any place, that place would always be home. "Home is ...the stable window that opens out into the imagination." Patchett attended high school at St. Bernard Academy, a private, non-parochial Catholic school for girls run by the Sisters of Mercy. Following graduation, she attended Sarah Lawrence College and took fiction writing classes with Allan Gurganus, Russell Banks, and Grace Paley. She later attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where she met longtime friend Elizabeth McCracken. NYC FOUR SEASONS

Seen on countless movies and TV shows, NYC is one of the tourists’ favourite. The city’s smart design, imposing architecture, the myriad of stunning sights to visit and infinite entertainment and dining choices make this place feel like the centre of the world. The Big Apple is where business, art, tradition and progressive culture collide to house and host millions of people. Its diverse nature and authentic spirit ensure everyone feels equally welcome, safe, included and free. Hoping to see the world's finest urban attributes and enjoy all the delights that this magnificent city boasts, we headed to the east coast. Eager to check whether NYC lives up to its outstanding reputation, we settled in Four Seasons in Manhattan. Curious to see first hand why this place is the most visited US city, stealing the hearts of 60 million travellers each year, our 3-day expedition began on July 25th, when we landed at JFK. 66

SEPTEMBER 2019

Four Seasons Located at East 57th Street, between Madison and Park Avenue, the prominent hotel offers 5-star experience and is everything we dreamed of and more when planning our trip. Just a short stroll away from the city’s all-stars such as the NY’s headliner, Central Park, the historic Rockefeller Center and Fifth Avenue, one of the fanciest streets in the US, Four Seasons abounds in luxury and elegance. When the renowned architect, I.M. Pei, designed this 52-story masterpiece, he set out to create an eclectic space immersed in natural light. This spectacular lodging resembles a work of art for its astounding attention to detail and a museum, with its impressive high ceilings, soaring windows and open space areas.

Deluxe Digs Being grand like the city itself, the second tallest hotel in NYC offers a variety of different luxurious accommodations to fit all tastes and parties. There are 368 guest rooms and then, there are 15 extraordinary suites ranging from studios, junior, terrace and specialty suites to apartment-style suites. The rooms differ in size and price but share the enviously stylish design and foster an inviting, residential atmosphere making the stay here a memorable, one-of-a-kind affair. Since my entourage counted a group of three, we stayed in the Comspmopolitan junior suite, but the amazing hotel staff was more than willing to give me a tour and show why this place is said to be one of the most extravagant hotels in Manhattan. The chic, inimitable interior is what all suites have in common. Whether you’re a businessman sending out emails while enjoying the early morning sun and breathtaking city views, or a family of four on a sky-high glam vacay, refined elegance is all you’ll find everywhere you look. The cool aesthetics of the city’s skyscrapers bring the perfect balance to the wooden panelling, authentic artwork and handknotted rugs, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere despite the contemporary, clean design of the space. Custom furnishings such as handmade, lighted pedestal beds, Japanese tamo ash furniture, cerused oak executive desks and a make-up area polished with English Sycamore and unique mirrors and seating speak in adjectives and unapologetically evoke praise. Whether you decide to have breakfast in bed while indulging in the cinematic views of the Manhattan skyscrapers or dream of having an early dinner on your private furnished terrace overlooking Central Park and Hudson River, ordering in using an iPod placed next to your bed is not just a perk but Vogue-worthy dining. The architects considered bathrooms another opportunity to remove the guests from reality. From Italian quarried marble that looks like the gelato you’d have in Rome, to ginger, onyx clads found in the specialty suites, the elegant and sleek design of sinks, showers and bathtubs meets the future in the shape of one way smart mirrors with built-in screens for your convenience. Japanese toilets, once again, prove the designers didn’t cut corners when conceptualizing the space. Famous for being more elaborate than others of their kind, these high-tech toilet seats take pride in their cool features and can offer an entirely hands-free experience. The kids were, of course, fans of the big-screen TV and comfy, king-sized bed. My wife and I didn’t mind it either for it was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing and roaming around. We also loved the walk-in closet and the warm lighting in the suite. The NYC skyline is one of the most enchanting scenes you’ll ever see. Cosmopolitan junior suites sit on the 18th up to the 22nd floor. The height provides the captivating Manhattan views and ensures a peaceful and restful sleep environment.

Outstanding Comfort The concierge informed us of various amenities such as housekeeping twice a day, daily newspaper delivery for old souls and unlimited use of Health Club, including steam and sauna. Other standouts involve the Rolls-Royce ride and kids amenities so incredible that will make you want to have a few more. The hotel provides a babysitting service, strollers, bottle warmers, cribs and rollaway beds. You can childproof your room and get toys, games and DVDs for the little ones. And that’s not all! Upon request, the staff creates a custom NYC tour for families, from museum and theatre recommendations to other entertainment options and restaurant reservations. Talk about family-friendly hotels!

The Spa If you find yourself in need of some TLC during your stay, the L. Raphael SPA will exceed your imagination. Once you set foot in this spacious retreat, you’ll realize you need stuff you didn’t even know you needed. With 8 treatment rooms, 2 relaxation areas, 2 whirlpools and 2 saunas, this place will invigorate your body, revitalize your mind and feed your soul like no other! Famous for its impeccable service, signature treatments and VIP clients, the place is a haven of serenity, tranquility and comfort. Fit to get A-listers red carpet ready, elite athletes for their peak performance, relieve jet leg in travellers, or cater you and your partner with a romantic tandem massage, L. Raphael gives away the secrets of erupting volcanos, Cote d'Azur, Dead Sea and Sweeden. The master of its craft, the L. Raphael team, knows a thing or two about aromatherapy, dream-like relaxation, how to treat tired feet after miles of sightseeing covered and ease the awe-inflicted neck tension. The massage I got here gives the Thai a good run for their money and brazenly beats all others. An innovator in skincare, L. Raphael SPA is your beauty and wellness oasis in tune with the diversity and glamour of the city. A frontrunner in the field, the health club appeals to anyone seeking the royal treatment, holistic healing and sharp service. Chewing up its competition means no competitive pricing, but it’s beyond well-worth it.

Dining The Garden restaurant is where the architecturally stunning space meets the fierce loyalty to exquisite service, to deliver you another out-of-this-world indulgence Four Seasons boasts. The scene of the marvellous Grand lobby and floor-to-ceiling windows undeniably make this phenomenal diner an eatery with a view. The gorgeous African Acacia trees bring drama to the elegant interior, leaving you wondering about the almost Zen-like ambience in the busy Midtown. The alluring décor, health-conscious dishes and the polished waitstaff is your breakfast at Tiffany’s-chic and sophisticated, yet laid back and fun. The VIPs on the menu are: Catskill smoked salmon bagel, stuffed French toast, Ora King salmon tartare, and Wagyu hanger steak. My kids went mad for Silver Dollar pancakes, chicken fingers, and the chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich.

The staff Being a city of 800 languages, The Big Apple is as cosmopolitan as it gets. Therefore it’s no surprise that a multilingual concierge can cater almost anyone in their mother-tongue. The moment we arrived, we felt like we had entered the home of a life-long friend. The striking appeal and faultless service make this place talked about for all the right reasons! The staff pays lavish attention to each guest,# and the astounding level of intelligent service ensures everyone has an exceptional stay. Right from the get-go, it was quite obvious that Four Seasons not only protects against the hustle and bustle of the metropolis but provides an epic experience to anyone who drops by. Throughout our visit, the concierge and the staff were more than attentive, taking the initiative to do everything we could wish for - if only we were that imaginative! Without being pushy or annoying, the team greeted, tended and assisted us with such kindness and care, adding to the list of, ‘Why to rush back,’ in the holidays to come.

Our kind of New York The Four Seasons concierge drew up a list of attractions to visit during our 3-day stay. It perfectly complemented the outline we’ve put together and, much like the city, our tour turned out magical and memorable.

Yellow Cabs Yellow taxicabs are a quintessential part of the NYC lifestyle. The two founders of the Yellow Cab Company, Rockwell and Hertz, chose the vivid colour because it stands out in the packed streets. They figured it made the taxis easily visible for anyone hailing during the rush hour when cars choke the roads. What sets yellow apart from other vibrant colours is the fact that it was the favourite colour of Rockwell’s wife. Over the years, the legislation helped yellow cabs become one of the symbols of The Big Apple. There are currently around 13 000 yellow taxis in the city. In a true NY fashion, we hopped into one to zip us from JFK to Four Seasons. It was the perfect way to start our journey.

Afghan Kebab Said to be the best Afgan food in the city, we hit the one on 2nd Avenue to

get lunch on the day we arrived (another one is located in Hell’s Kitchen). The spinach fritters, lamb kebabs and a fabulous homemade salad dressing make the 30-minute wait worthwhile. Highly recommended for everyone with a taste for authentic flavours, excellent service and a cozy atmosphere.

iHop Who doesn’t like a good stack of pancakes and Oreo milkshake? Despite the long line, iHop won’t disappoint you for its quick and friendly service, affordable prices and freshly made food. This place has a great menu with an extensive list of morning bites to help you start your day feeling like a boss. The portions are massive, the food is terrific and the awesome staff won’t let your glasses get low. If you want to try a proper American breakfast, this fabulous eatery scores points with kids and hits home with its take on traditional cuisine.

Times Square Alongside the New York Stock Exchange, Times Square tries out for the NYC headquarters. By bringing home over $23 million in advertising revenue annually, it’s hard to say who praises the enchanting city’s hallmark the most - New Yorkers, the businesses, or 50 million tourists that drop by each year. We hit the triangle-shaped intersection to shake hands with The Big Apple and stand where the US once celebrated its victory in World War II, where traditional New Year’s countdown takes place, where performances abound and the economy thrives. Entirely smoke-free, the area houses MTV’s headquarters and ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ which broadcasts live from its office at 44th and Broadway. It also starred in numerous motion pictures and inspired tunes, books, artwork and photoshoots. The most visited attraction in the world houses the Times Square Visitor Centre and Museum, open to the public, free of charge. Overcrowded as you would imagine, this captivating destination blinds with its beauty, intricacy and lights. In fact, it’s thanks to those illuminated billboards that the square is visible from outer space. As we stood in the heart of NYC, surrounded by selfie sticks and skyscrapers, overwhelmed with awe and wonder, we could see why people from all over the globe fall in love with this fantastic place.

Open Bus Tour The all-around town double-decker bus tour is an iconic way to cruise through NYC and see the most prominent landmarks. Times Square, One World Trade Center, 9/11 Memorial, the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, the Empire State Building, Queens and Chinatown are some of the sights we knew of from the movies and magazines and now finally, got to see in person. To say that we were blown away would be an understatement. The city’s jawdropping architecture and its ambivalence towards history and tradition was something we’ve never seen before. The magnitude of its influence on global politics, business and culture, makes this place alluring as much as repulsive for the pressure, rush and excitement you feel in the air here.

The most interesting bus tour takeaways lCentral Park is bigger than life, the Vatican and Monaco. This verdant treasure in the heart of Manhatten is the most visited inner-city park in the US. Once covered in glaciers, the area kept large boulders (bedrock) as a tribute to its monumental history. This majestic place credits its authenticity to 57 sculptures, 36 bridges, 7 lakes and 7 fountains. It features Cleopatra’s granite obelisk, 2 zoos and numerous picturesque landscapes that will sweep you off your feet. lBuilt on the land where Geroge Washington once slept, the bridge connecting Brooklyn to lower Manhattan is the world’s first steel-wire suspension bridge. It officially opened in 1883, but a year later, 21 elephants walked the Brooklyn Bridge to prove to America the innovative marvel could safely transport its commuters. lOut of all US schools, NYU sends the most students abroad and is the absolute favourite among international scholars, being the university with the highest number of foreigners in the whole country. It takes pride in setting up the first dentistry on wheels in the state and hosting the Strawberry Festival when the staff bakes the largest strawberry shortcake in NY. Woody Allen, John F. Kennedy, Jr., Angelina Jolie, and Tom Ford are just a few legends that attended the school and smashed their career goals. lThe amazing Hudson River houses warehouses and businesses as well as millions of seahorses and one-of-a-kind Floating Science Barge. The estuary used to moor a chapel and a church, still mourns the never-built Hudson River Bridge and keeps its secrets in The Catalogue of Fisherman’s Tales in its Maritime Museum.

lIf Queens wanted to secede, it would be the 5th largest city in the US. Boasting the Civil War-era Fort Trotten Park and the stunning Sunnyside Gardens Park, it’s famous for the world’s first road paved for cars. And, the borough loves its music too. The finest pianos ever made were built here, in Astoria, by Steinway & Sons. The musical giants like 50 Cent, Louis Armstrong and Tony Bennet all grew up in Queens.

The Museum of Natural History Eager to get a grasp of humans, animals and plants, we visited this startling complex of 28 buildings and over 45 exhibition halls. Being into nature as much as we are, this place was a mandatory stop on our Big Apple tour. The four of us were among 5 billion visitors who come to this place each year looking to learn, explore and discover the world we live in. Astonished by the size of the greatest dinosaur fossil collection in the world and amazed by the opulence of life on Earth and beyond, we were thrilled to take in everything this phenomenal landmark offered us. Everyone agreed that nature has never felt closer indoors and that archeology never sounded more fun than here. The museum is bound to make you smarter and spark your interest in biology, anatomy, astronomy and science.

The Central Park Zoo Find it at the southeast corner of Central Park for a wonderful whimsical adventure with your kids. The relatively small size of this place doesn’t steal a bit of its beauty. We loved the educational exhibits set all over the Zoo, telling you fun facts about its inhabitants. The sea lions are in the Central Garden. On the left side of the Zoo, visit the Tropic zone, hot and humid as you would imagine. It’s a poetry of colours that fly around you and get kids pumped. Up north, we saw snow monkeys, snow leopards, Red pandas, Grizzly bears and penguins. Right from the Central Garden, there is a Delacorte clock and 4-D theatre. We were all fond of the Clock and the animated animal quintet playing tunes every 30 minutes. The greenery makes the best backdrop for trending Insta photos and they did a lovely job of displaying the animals by providing many different viewing angles. The environment the animals are kept in seems to suit them very well.

Apple Store Swinging by the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue was everything but a regular visit to a computer store to get a new charger. It was more like going to an out-of-this-world gallery to see the tech masterpieces that changed the world as we knew it. Artcihectually bold and brilliant, this awe-inspiring structure was one of our favourites for its spectacular design and revolutionary spirit. The enticing big glass cube is a treasure to behold and aesthetics to admire. Much like its products, the futuristic building reigns supreme and adds to the excitement of living in this particular time. I took my kids to this eye-catching shop because I knew it would dazzle them, inspire them, spike up their creativity and overwhelm them with the appreciation for evolution, innovation, and excellence.

Museum of Illusions With over 13 interactive exhibits, this place played tricks on us everywhere we looked. Educational as much as confusing, this outlandish spot evoked curiosity and admiration in all of us. The Ames Room is a real-life Alice in Wonderland experience. The AntiGravity Room is where we defied gravity - or at least that’s how it seemed. Infinity Room is, you’ve guessed it, the illusion of infinite space. Head on The Platter is, of course, a deception of the hidden body. The Chair illusion, Rotated Room and Bottomless Pit blew our minds and made us all question our senses. Brilliant and intriguing, we loved the installations, games and puzzles. Everyone’s favourite, this majestic museum is a must-see attraction in NYC.

Grand Central Station We've heard so much about the world’s busiest train station, we couldn’t wait to check it out. Being travel addicts that we are, we’ve lost count of how many airports and stations we’ve been to, but no train terminal can compare to this one.

70

SEPTEMBER 2019

Renovated multiple times, the gorgeous historic building wins the hearts of 22 million visitors a year with its intricate design and splendid appeal. While you watch the commuters of different paths rushing to get on and off the train, you can see life happening right before your eyes. To pause for a second and observe everything as if we were in the theatre was a terrific experience because this is everything but your ordinary station. Here, the soaring ceilings tell tales, a 20-million dollar clock tells time, oysters are your pre-ride snacks and fizzy drinks are served in elegantly restored lounges.

Farewell We began our journey eager to learn more about one of the greatest cities in the world. NYC counts no days but hours, and I swear the clocks tick faster here than they do online. Over the 72 hours, we explored this glorious, cunning and baffling metropolis. We met the past more than once and got the idea of where the Western population is heading. The Big Apple is big on diversity, so there’s something for everyone here. Whoever you are, you are bound to find anything you need with opulent chances it will match your taste. This simple fact will make you feel noticed, cared for and valued. However, as you walk through the packed streets and see just a glimpse of the sky engulfed in skyscrapers, you couldn’t feel smaller, more invisible or more insignificant. This paradox impressed and puzzled all of us. Elaborate in detail, abundant in opportunities and always on the go, The Big Apple is a fierce city to live in and an exciting place to visit. It dazzles with its historical landmarks, unique style and a voracious appetite for progress and change. Much like our family, it honors tradition, lives in the present and looks forward to the future. Thank you New York, we hope to come back soon!

Ferrari 812 GTS: the V12 spider returns 800 CV MAKES IT THE MOST POWERFUL PRODUCTION CONVERTIBLE ON THE MARKET

Exactly 50 years on from the debut of the last spider in the Ferrari range to sport a front-mounted V12, the 812 GTS hails a triumphant return for a model type that has played a pivotal role in the marque’s history since its foundation. The Ferrari V12 spider story features many iconic models and began in 1948 with the 166 MM, an authentic thoroughbred competition GT that won the two most prestigious endurance races in the world in 1949: the Mille Miglia and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The last in that long lineage was the 1969 365 GTS4, also known as the Daytona Spider because of Ferrari’s legendary victory in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona when two works 330 P4s and the NART-entered 412 P took the chequered flag side-by-side to occupy the top three places. The front-mounted V12 architecture has not been used in a Ferrari series-production spider since the 365 GTS4. That said, four special series limited editions have been launched: the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina in 2000, the Superamerica in 2005, the SA Aperta in 2010 and, most recently, the F60 America of which just 10 were built to celebrate Ferrari’s 60th year on the American market in 2014. Like its historic predecessors, the 812 GTS sets a new benchmark in terms of performance and exclusivity. Sporting Ferrari’s majestic 800 cv V12, it is not merely the most powerful production spider on the market, but also the most versatile, thanks to its retractable hard top, a unique feature in this segment which also guarantees a larger boot capacity. The retractable hard top (RHT), which opens in just 14 seconds at speeds of up to 45 km/h, does not impinge upon the interior dimensions, thus maintaining the donor car’s roomy cockpit. The electric rear screen, which acts as a windstop, makes the car truly useable with the top down while, with the top up, it can be left open to allow occupants to continue to luxuriate in the naturally-aspirated V12’s unique soundtrack. 82
