Fifty-five years ago, the travel agents operating in South Africa believed that in the interests of Robyn Christie - CEO ASATA sustaining their businesses they should form an Association. This Association would provide a platform to share ideas, unite together and assist passengers when disputes arose. The initiative was borne out of an industry that was evolving and required the adoption of fair practice principles. Without the necessary governance, we faced the threat of becoming an endangered vocation! Many different challenges have since been experienced and today it is clear that forming the Association of South African Travel Agents, or ASATA as it is more commonly known, was a shrewd move. ASATA is a voluntary Association, representing about 85% of the travel agent community in South Africa. Our Members display the ASATA logo with pride – verifying the professional role that they play in the industry.

Travel agents are intermediaries and form part of an extensive supply chain. It is therefore important that we articulate the consensus of our Members to the other stakeholders in the private and public sectors. Regular deliberation and negotiation takes place with other sectors and ASATA is at the forefront of those cooperative discussions. As founding Members of the World Travel Agents Association Alliance (WTAAA), we ensure that the region remains current with global trends and industry issues. Through this affi liation ASATA has a seat on the Passenger Agency Programme Global Joint Council (PAPGJC), giving us the opportunity to discuss issues raised by our Members regarding the working relationship between airlines and agents. ASATA is pivotal in ensuring and promoting the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. The Professional Programme is an initiative borne out of the need to recognise travel consultants as professionals. Many Members work tirelessly in seeking solutions to issues that are brought to our attention from both Members and Consumers seeking information or advice. South Africans are embracing the commercial opportunities that the African landscape offers and a select group of our Members have invested in the resources to become specialists in delivering South Africans to their African destination. More than 80% of all airline bookings are made through the retail travel agent and the Rand value of the South African air travel industry is said to exceed twenty billion. This is a substantial contribution transacting through the intermediary services offered by ASATA Members and is evidence that we have been unrelenting in achieving the initial objectives laid out for us fifty five years ago.

Woza Moya Project aims to povide quality community care and support for people infected and affected by HIV and Aids. By making available home-based care, orphan intervention and food security, Woza Moya intends alleviating hunger, poverty and suffering through a holistic and integrated approach. The Woza Moya team focuses on strengthening support services in the community and at present services about 600 families in 8 communities in the Ufafa regions. Plans to extend this programme are entirely dependant on funding available. Our vision for the Woza Moya Community Centre is to have one more building alongside the present one. This would be a Play Therapy Centre accommodating support groups while also providing a safe and caring environment for orphaned and vulnerable children. If funding allows, we would like to be able to offer a meal for the children too.

The ExecuJet Aviation Group was established in 1991 with headquarters in Switzerland and operations in six regions - Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Attentive to the escalated needs of the corporate world, and individuals alike, ExecuJet sought to envelop the global business traveller with a holistic and customer-centric solution. ExecuJet Africa is a fine representation of the dedication, dynamic nature, and vibrancy of the ExecuJet Aviation Group operation. Based at Lanseria International Airport near Johannesburg and at Cape Town International Airport, the company provides a comprehensive range of aviation services, which includes aircraft sales, charter, fixed base operations (FBOs), aircraft management and maintenance. Within Africa, chartering a business aircraft will sometimes be the only practical time and cost effective way of reaching your destination. An important factor to consider is that scheduled carriers only fly to a small portion of available airports throughout Africa and therefore business aircraft will sometimes be the only efficient way of keeping in touch with remote areas, as it can take off and land from a wider range of airfields. www.fmessentials.co.za

SOUTH AFRICA

Additionally, consider the amount of quality, productive time that is gained by using business aircraft. There’s less time standing around in queues, checking-in, waiting to depart, and no delays due to cancelled and rescheduled flights. With business aircraft all these issues are avoided, and a purpose-specific environment awaits. Furthermore, the chartered aircraft is at your disposal and changing schedule times or even destinations before or during the programme can normally be accommodated with ease. ExecuJet is one of the largest operators in Africa with a charter fleet of more than 50 modern business aircraft ranging from turboprops to intercontinental jets, meeting the demands of any flight mission. ExecuJet is internationally recognised as the leading general aviation company in Africa. Whether for business or leisure, contact ExecuJet for a tailored travel solution today. Missed flights, hotel reservations going astray, lost luggage – those are standard disruptions business travellers face. But when travelling in Africa, travellers increasingly need to be aware of the heightened risks due to political instability, poorly developed infrastructure and infectious disease such as malaria. Employers are realising that protecting the health and safety of their employees when travelling for business, is no longer discretionary. Responsible employers are turning to travel risk management experts to assist them in implementing traveller health and safety programs that will mitigate the risks. In 90 percent of cases, travel crises (as opposed to inconvenience) involve issues like sudden illness, theft or a traffic accident and the first choices travellers make, may have long-term consequences. If employees are prepared for those and have clear policies and procedures in place, they will also be prepared for more high impact risks such as terror attacks and natural disasters. International SOS helps companies take care of the health, safety and wellbeing of their travellers. With 25 years experience and over 8 000 clients including 69% of the Fortune Global 500, our global resources and expert knowledge are put to the test daily. In Africa, our local knowledge and infrastructure, including alarm centres, air ambulances, clinics and highly trained staff, enables us to support clients wherever they may be seeking new business opportunities. www.fmessentials.co.za

Stress on the roads is a killer. Business people struggling through traffic to reach meetings in time or travelling long distances to offices and clients know that only too well. Avis’ Chauffeur Drive enables its clients to arrive at their destination relaxed, using travel time to prepare for meetings, contact their home office for updates on projects, catch up on correspondence or messages, make appointments and even negotiate business deals from the comfort of the back seat of a vehicle of their choice. “Both companies and individuals use the Avis Chauffeur Drive service for a remarkable variety of purposes,” says general manager Avis Luxury Collection, Steven Payze. “These range from business to leisure from special occasion luxury to regular service, for a day or for weeks and months on end. Customers enjoy perfect peace of mind, knowing that they are secure in the very safe hands of professional and highly- trained drivers.” The service is not limited merely to the benefit of having a personal chauffeur. Complimentary bottled water and a personal music selection enhance the experience. “Many companies use our chauffeur-driven cars to transport visitors to and from the airport to hotels or business premises, or to take accompanying family members to shopping centres or tourist attractions” continues Payze. “In fact, customers can also request dedicated tour guides for this purpose.” Unlimited kilometres are available for the Chauffeur Drive service and it is not limited to city boundaries. Companies launching products frequently use Avis’ chauffeur-driven cars to escort guests to events in style, also relieving them of the usual parking hassles.”Employees are frequently treated to the service as well, as part of an incentive reward or recognition for exceptional performance,” he adds. “Another popular use of this option is to be driven to and from parties, social outings and events,” says Payze. www.fmessentials.co.za

“Our customers opt for this not only because they wish to avoid any risk of driving when they have consumed more than the legal limit of alcohol , but also for the convenience and the fun of travelling risk-and stress-free to and from events where the purpose is pleasure and entertainment.” Then of course, there is the pure luxurious self-indulgence angle, when hiring a chauffeur -driven car is intended specifically as a treat , or to spoil a loved one. “In such cases, clients often also select a luxury vehicle,” Payze points out. “Our Luxury Car division definitely offers the ultimate in luxury with a wide range of vehicles for any taste or occassion.” Nor has Avis neglected people with disabilities. “We introduced the Toyota Quantum specifically to cater for clients who face some physical challenge,” says Payze. “The vehicle has been professionally adapted to accomodate wheelchairbound passengers. It features a hydraulic side-lift which raises passengers in their wheelchairs onto a customised platform in the vehicle where they are securely strapped in. The Quantum can accomodate three passengers in wheelchairs and six seated passengers as well.” Customers who require a chauffeur -driven car at their disposal can select hourly, half-day or full-day rate options.
