Decisive impulses for the global print industry & top marks for drupa 2016 The atmosphere at drupa 2016, the world’s biggest and most important trade fair for print and crossmedia solutions, can hardly be topped: the investment climate is extremely good and has far exceeded all expectations. As the 11-day trade fair draws to a close the 1,837 exhibitors from 54 countries unanimously reported excellent business deals, extremely promising contacts and a positive spirit for the global print industry. The re-positioning of drupa and its focus on future themes with strong growth potential – such as 3D printing, functional printing or packaging printing – proves to be a real asset. Be it publication, commercial, packaging or industrial printing – printing technology offers matching solutions for all of these applications while opening up new lines of business and business models at the same time. “The print industry is constantly reinventing itself and offers a wealth

of high-potential facets. And this is precisely what drupa 2016 has very impressively proven. We were able to experience a highly innovative industry here in the 19 exhibition halls, one that has succeeded in moving out of the “valley of tears” and grasping the future by the neck,” explains Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Chairman of the drupa Committee and Chairman of the Board at Koenig & Bauer AG. drupa 2016: trade fair of decision makers and capital spenders Some 260,000 visitors from 188 countries and some 1,900 journalists from 74 countries travelled to Düsseldorf to learn about technology innovations, further developments and

new business lines. Visitors’ decisionmaking competence is extremely high: approximately 75% of all visitors are executives and in a decisive and or co-decisive capacity when it comes to capital expenditure in their companies. Various other indicators produced by the visitors’ survey also underscore very clearly that drupa is a flawless B2B trade fair and platform for business decisions: 54% of visitors came to drupa 2016 with concrete investment intentions 29% placed orders during drupa 30% are planning to place their orders after drupa

60% found new suppliers at drupa The development in visitor attendance (2012: 314,248) reflects the worldwide consolidation occurring in the industry. This is why visitors’ high decisionmaking competence produced a particularly positive effect, all the more as one in two visitors expected their companies’ business to develop very well over the next twelve months. “Customers – with very few exceptions – no longer come with large delegations or as part of a company outing to drupa. It is rather the top managers that travel to Düsseldorf today – and from 188 countries to this drupa,” explains Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. drupa 2016: global No. 1 trade fair Totalling 76%, the percentage of international visitors is up 16% from four years ago. This figure can be attributed to Asian visitors: 17% of international visitors came from this continent alone (2012: 13.6%). And here India accounted for the largest share with 5%, followed by China with 3%. The leading European countries were Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK. “This means that drupa has enhanced its global market significance and its international rating even further. It is the unrivalled global No. 1 trade fair for the print and media industries,” says Werner Matthias Dornscheidt commenting on the results of drupa 2016.

Positive verdict for technical side events Meeting with high demand was the programme of accompanying expert events with its three pillars drupa cube, drupa innovation park, 3D fab + print, touchpoint packaging as well as Printed Electronics and Solutions. One in two drupa visitors were interested in the various special shows and lecture theatres. drupa cube, the event and congress location, was received particularly enthusiastically. Almost 3,500 drupa visitors flooded into the cube over the eleven trade fair days in order to find out about a plethora of topics. In particular high demand were the keynotes by Frans

Johansson (founder and CEO of The Medici Group), Silas Amos (founder of Silas Amos Ltd. Design Thought) and Shane Wall (Chief Technology Officer HP And Global Head of HP Labs). The Creative Day organised by Messe Düsseldorf in cooperation with W&V which addresses marketers and creative workers in particular, was even sold out. And the C-Level Sessions specifically targeting executives were also fully booked. Meeting with a very positive response was the drupa innovation park that focused on innovative business models in addition to technology innovations from renowned exhibitors. On display were ready-to-market applications for Augmented Reality in field service and in advertising but also successful examples for multi-channel campaigns. The crucial insights from the contentdriven dip 2016: print creates content and added value! drupacity: an experience for all And drupa does not stop at the gates of the exhibition centre. Instead, Düsseldorf presented itself with a versatile programme as an attractive trade fair destination for all things drupa: be it an exhibition or 3D event, discussion forums or a “rolling lab”: drupacity allowed thousands of interested visitors to experience the trade fair themes – live and handson right in the city centre – providing both drupa visitors and exhibitors with tangible added value and a concept that is truly “one of a kind” worldwide.

“Our concept of bringing the drupa themes to the city thereby making it possible for people to understand and experience technology has paid off 100%. Thanks to numerous citycentre activities Düsseldorf citizens and visitors were able relate to the trade fair themes. drupacity proved an experience for all,” reworked Boris Neisser, General Manager at the trade association Destination Düsseldorf, which organised the drupacity programme, who went on to say: “The many multipliers from all over the world felt welcome in Düsseldorf and will return to their home countries with these positive impressions. This is “city marketing live” representing a locational advantage not to be underestimated for our city.” As announced at the midpoint of drupa, the event will will stick to its four-year cycle meaning the next drupa will be held from 23 June to 3 July 2020. Exhibitors Testimonials: Asahi, Dr. Dieter Niederstadt, Technical Marketing Manager With drupa 2016 we see our efforts confirmed that visitors, prospects and customers changed their point of view in the flexo printing area completely. In today’s surrounding, stunning graphical quality is a given. Customers are more looking into productivity advancements of a product such as the improvement in overall equipment effectiveness, e.g. to reduced make ready waste and fewer press wash-ups. We were happy that

we had the opportunity to explain the perfect solution of fixed colour palette printing in reference to extended color gamut (ECG) and drupa was a good podium for that. These OEE benefits create significant improvement at the print converter and has been a hot topic in our conversations at the booth. Bobst, Jean-Pascal Bobst, CEO The industries we serve today are searching for drastic productivity improvement through innovations, services and people relationship. Moreover the digitalization of the packaging supply chain is paving the way for the future. This year´s drupa has again been a great platform for us to demonstrate that we deliver the right solutions for our customers´ applications – be they folding carton, flexible material, labels or corrugated board. Canon, Jeppe Frandsen, Executive Vice President Canon Europe Canon came to drupa 2016 with the aim of demonstrating the range and depth of our capabilities in a way that reflected the real business of our customers. We set out to give visitors fresh ideas about how they could expand their capabilities and to inspire them to unleash print in their own individual ways. We’ve surpassed that objective on multiple levels. The response of visitors to what we’ve shown and discussed with them has been hugely positive. The deciding factor for so many Canon customers here at drupa 2016 has been the inspiration they have

taken from the live print applications we have shown – so much so, in fact that for us it has been the ‘applications drupa’. Our many applications, offering significant added value particularly in the areas of commercial print and publishing, have given them confidence in the immediate business potential of our end-to-end solutions and, through their investments with Canon, they’re looking to ensure the long-term future of their businesses. In turn, our commitment far beyond drupa is to give them the long-term support to achieve their goals. CHILI publish, Kevin Goeminne, CEO drupa 2016 gave us the opportunity to show that CHILI publish has evolved a lot since it first drupa participation in 2012. With not only the launch of a new product but also the numerous partnerships, CHILI publish wants to emphasize that our company is growing and is becoming an important player in the industry. At the booth, we wanted to create a casual and cosy feeling where people were welcomed to learn more about CHILI publish and its products. Which has certainly paid off as the number of visitors on our booth exceeded our expectations! drupa gave us the opportunity to meet people we have only been in contact with via mail or phone and to strengthen existing contacts in real life. CHILI publish is looking forward to the next edition of drupa and will make sure to show many more innovations by then!

10 visitors we welcomed at our stand. This drupa helps us to reconfirm our leadership position in all domains of packaging and labels workflows; the overwhelming amount of visitors from all over the globe exceeded our expectations both in closed orders as well as in new contacts.

EFI, Guy Gecht, CEO The USP of drupa is clearly the production plants in operation. This allows visitors to follow and assess the complete workflow. An asset no other trade fair in the world has to offer. Enfocus, Fabian Prudhomme, Vice President Again, drupa managed to attract visitors from all over the world, which gave us an extraordinary opportunity to touch base with our existing Enfocus community as much as with new customers. People who were not familiar yet with Enfocus had the chance to discover our solutions and the value these can bring to their respective companies. We showcased the endless possibilities of the Enfocus solutions during the 800 live demos we delivered on our booth. We are absolutely delighted with the feedback and votes of confidence we received from our visitors. Not only is this the result of our customer centric approach in everything we do, but I also believe that we succeeded in convincing our visitors that it is possible to not only touch the future but also automate it! This drupa was the most successful edition for Enfocus yet and we are already looking forward to drupa 2020. Epson, Duncan Ferguson, Executive Director, Professional Printing & Robotics, Epson Europe This drupa is Epson’s biggest ever showcase for our most complete range of inkjet printers for prepress, signage, photographic, textile and label applications. We have had a very successful show with significant orders from companies around the globe,

particularly for the SureColor SC-S signage range, which has led us to increase production to meet demand. Interest in our SurePress L-6034UV digital label press, commercialised at drupa, was high with orders taken at the show from Germany and the UK. Our Print Shop Zone too was extremely busy and attracted huge interest from visitors discovering how our desktop solutions enable them to offer a collaborative design-and-print service to produce personalized products.

Goss, Eric Bell, Marketing Director Achieving More Together’ was undoubtedly the right theme for Goss this drupa. We’ve had a very successful show, working side-by-side with our partners, and this will be continue to be the most logical way forward to support not only our existing customers, but new prospects too. Our drupa 2016 successes include significant product orders, signed for live on the stand; the sale of the first Goss Thallo system since acquiring of this product line from DG press ServiceS; and the launch of another Goss industry-first, the embedded color bar for web offset packaging production. All in all, drupa 2016 far exceeded our expectations and confirms that our approach to business, with our customers and partners at the forefront of our strategy, is the right direction for Goss moving forward.

Esko, Udo Panenka, President At drupa 2016, Esko exhibited with its sister company X-Rite Pantone and subsidiaries Enfocus and MediaBeacon. Spread out across six Inspiration Zones, visitors experienced the combined innovations to improve the steps of a typical packaging production workflow. Bringing that message and demonstrating the value add of a connected and integrated workflow has come across really well for the many

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Gerold Linzbach, CEO We are very satisfied with the outcome of the trade fair. Thanks to drupa Heidelberg starts into the new business with a positive outlook. Our motto Simply Smart was a success with visitors. We received a high demand for our industrial printing ranges and exceeded our own targets. The further automation of offset printing produced a high number of contracts signed especially for our high-performance

presses. Together with our partner Fuji we have set new standards in industrial digital printing. The debut and market launch of our new digital printing machine Primefire 106 was extremely promising prompting worldwide sales for packaging applications. With drupa tailwainds we are on course for growth. Highcon, Aviv Ratzman, CEO and CoFounder drupa 2016 has been a tipping point for our business. We launched our technology at drupa 2012, but this one has been a real reinforcement of our vision. Sales to both new customers and existing customers have surpassed our expectations by far. drupa has been confirmation that digital technology, and finishing in particular, has reached the point where it is becoming mainstream. Many of the customers we met during drupa have realized the need to start investing in technology rather than continue to expand capacity, adding value to their products instead of competing on price. HP, Francois Martin, worldwide marketing director HP Graphics Solutions Business drupa 2016 has been a landmark show for HP. It is clear that digital has arrived as mainstream, with HP experiencing the best attendance at any drupa ever and with sales not only surpassing 2012 results by 20%, but exceeding our 2016 ambitious goals by 25% overall. drupa continues to be the most relevant industry event for innovation, and HP is committed to keep reinventing to help our customers reinvent their own possibilities, ensuring that drupa 2020 is better than we could imagine.

Ink Router, Robert Godwin, Director of Business Development Our first time exhibiting at drupa was a great success. It made it possible for us to introduce our dynamic new product, InkRouter to visitors from all over the world. One of the largest fairs in the world brought us in contact with leaders in the printing industry, which offered us the opportunity to network and to create more brand awareness and brand recognition. Sabine Geldermann, Global Director of drupa and the Messe Düsseldorf team did a great job, I’m glad we were part of this event. drupa 2016 has exceeded our expectations and we are already looking forward to the next edition! Kodak, Olivier Claude, Worldwide Director of Sales and Customer Operations drupa 2016 completely exceeded Kodak’s expectations. Tens of thousands of high caliber visitors, customers and prospects from around the world visited our stand to do business and see the more than 20 products and technologies Kodak launched at this year’s show. The fact that we hit our sales target on Day 7 – and having reached 168% of our sales target on Day 9 - is testimony of the industry’s trust in our cutting edge technology, which helps our customers deliver on profitability, sustainability and growth. Landa, Benny Landa, Chairman drupa 2016 will be remembered as the inflection point in the industry’s transition from mechanical printing to digital. In the past, digital printing vendors had to try to convince the market that digital is the way to go.

Previously it was a ‘push’ selling motion. Now, for the first time, the situation has reversed. There is a very strong ‘pull’ from the market, driven by both customers and brand-owners, who are now demanding digital printing. It seems that the market leaders – in packaging, commercial printing and in publishing – have come to the realization that they simply must go digital. For Landa Digital Printing, this market awakening has been particularly rewarding, as reflected in the substantial number of orders which we took at drupa. Customers are telling us that no one comes even close to matching our quality, speed, substrate independence and print cost, which combine to create a tremendous value proposition. Massivit 3D Printing Technology, Lilach Sapir, VP Marketing and Business Development This drupa is Massivit 3D first presentation at an international trade fair. It was a great chance for us to present our 3D printing solutions made for printers in an exhibition for Print Service Providers. Our expectations are more than fulfilled. We had some nice sales mostly to large/wide format printers who understand that the use of 3D printing is their future and enables them to add another dimension to their business and grow their services and business in the visual communication world. QuadTech, Karl Fritchen, President drupa 2016 has been a fantastic show for QuadTech! We wanted to reach specific printing markets with the launch of four new products. There is no better place than drupa to

connect with those markets, and take advantage of the bright spotlight. Not only was the quantity of show visitors very high for us, but also the quality. It seemed that almost all were customers or potential customers of our print technology. We experienced very high interest and extremely positive response to our ColorTrack, DeltaCam, Inspection System and MultiCam TRIM introductions. After investing heavily in new technology innovations, drupa gives us the opportunity to meet with our markets directly, and show them the fruits of our labor. Scodix, Amit Shvartz, Vice President of Marketing Gaining over 100 new customers in 11 days, Scodix had an extremely successful drupa 2016. The largest exhibition in print provides a hugely popular forum and within this buzzing environment, we saw sales doubling and doubling with each coming day. With an incredibly fruitful launch at the show in 2012, we saw our company grow from 12 to over 200 customers and drupa played a vital part in that accomplishment. We hoped for similar success in 2016 and the show has exceeded all expectation. Scodix’ vision to ‘enhance your competitive edge’ and drupa’s message of ‘touch the future’ went hand-in-hand for us at the show and we saw these synergies demonstrated by phenomenal business results.

VDMA, Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of the Printing and Paper Technology Association within the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) Not only our own VDMA stand got an enormous respones, our member companies also gave us the feedback that the quality of conversations they had and the numner of lead and new orders were extremely positive. Our manufacturers have made use of the lately difficult years to develop custom-fit solutions for the changed needs in the print industry. We have every reason to look to the future with optimism. Print is an industry with a future! Xeikon, Danny Mertens, Corporate Communications Manager drupa 2016 was a special edition for us, as it was our first major show since we were acquired by Flint Group. The booth, including a number of Xeikon technologies and Flint Group presence, made this collaboration visible for our visitors. With the theme “X marks the spot”, we wanted to mark our position in the market. We are pleased to say that once again, drupa 2016 has been a successful edition for us. We aimed to create an open and welcome atmosphere at our booth and this was more than visible through the amount of visitors on our stand every day. It gave us the opportunity to get in contact with partners, competitors, existing customers that we have known for years and new, future customers from all over the world. drupa is a unique experience, not only by its size but most of all by its diversified public. Countdown for the next edition in 2020 has started!

Inaugural ORIS Flex Pack Awards Winners Announced In the lead-up to drupa, CGS Publishing Technologies organised its first ORIS Flex Pack Awards with resounding success

The aim of the competition is to acknowledge the creativity of current customers of the ORIS Flex Pack // Web system, while showcasing the quality and capabilities of the solution. The winning entries were on full display at the CGS booth at drupa. With 274 installations worldwide, the ORIS Flex Pack // Web system has firmly established itself in the market when it comes to producing highly accurate packaging proofs and mockups. The unique solution leverages on specially developed XG inks, a broad media portfolio and the ability to print on almost any printing substrate, to produce even the most demanding packaging proofing needs.

“In the past, producing dummies were a difficult and time-consuming process. Most were not colour-accurate. Flex Pack // Web allows the same colour precision for mock-ups and proofs,” said Heiner Muller, key account director for Europe, CGS. “The key is the ORIS transfer media, which can be printed upon and then transferred to any substrate common in packaging, including metal. The material is so flexible that it can, for instance, be transferred onto sheet metal and subsequently be processed on the regular finishing line, such as deepdrawn and molded.” The ORIS Flex Pack // Web system has installations across the whole

production chain, ranging from design agencies, brand owners, mock-up producers, pre-press companies to printers. Amongst the printers are flexo, offset and gravure printers and as of late, metal printers. The competition was held without stringent specifications to allow maximum creativity. All ORIS Flex Pack//Web system users worldwide were eligible for entry and each company were allowed to submit more than one entry. All submissions were anonymised to allow for neutral evaluation. The panel of jurors responsible for viewing and judging the anonymous entries were

consumables are needed. Furthermore, the special texture eliminates the need for time consuming surface screening. Additionally, the plate offers reliable high quality and consistency. This plate was awarded the 2016 FTA Technical Innovation Award. The award winning nyloflex ® FTF Digital has opened the way to further innovations. Following The Easy Way, Flint Group Flexographic Products will expand its product range with a further inherent flat top dot and micro textured flexo plate. Specifically designed for absorbent substrates and water based inks, the new printing plate provides to customers in preprint, beverage cartons or flexible paper packaging the benefits of Flat Top Dots in a simple way. Thus, it allows to easily achieve enhanced ink laydown and improved solid ink density on fiber substrates. Currently being in extended field trial phase, the new printing plate will be commercially available in the last quarter of 2016. Another exhibition highlights were the new rotec® Lightweight Sleeve, a hard-coated sleeve for conventional plate mounting with adhesive tapes, which offers weight savings up to 40% compared to standard sleeves. Additionally, it meets a range of customers’ requirements in the mid to wide web and pre-print sector. With this sleeve, maximum weight limits in the pressroom, shorter and easier press setups, or missing adapter configurations can easily be managed. The entire edge of the rotec® Lightweight sleeve is sealed with an aluminum plate, which protects the sleeve from exposure to cleaning liquids, inks or solvents and prevents unnatural diameter growth of the sleeve. The new sleeves are available in rotec® Omega Surface Technology for use of solvent based inks as well as with other well-known features like the rotec® Stainless Steel Register Ring. Flint Group brings yet another important technical development in prepress, the brand new rotec® Eco Bridge. A bridge with breathable metal ring, which creates an air pillow to virtually eliminate all tight-fit and sleeve-mounting problems. This bridge reduces up to 90% air volume requirement, up to 30% reduction in noise and significantly improves ease and speed of mounting all sleeves.

34 uses, this new EFI LED inkjet press has been designed from the ground up specifically for a $130 billion corrugated packaging industry that has more than 200 billion square meters of printed output per year – a figure that is more than 25-times greater than the estimated amount of annual signage and graphics output produced. The new inkjet technology’s media handling, inks and software platforms were designed by the top engineering, software and ink teams from across EFI. The cross-functional teams focused on understanding the unique needs of the corrugated industry, leveraging the latest technology to design a revolutionary solution. Users will be able to increase their productivity with digital in nearly any board application, running everything from 14-point cardstock to a full range of corrugated flutes – A, B, C, D, E, F, G, N, O, AB, AC, BC, EB, EF, and triple wall – without slowing down the press. The corrugated board press prints in up to seven colours, including white, and provides high-quality output with resolutions up to 360x720 dots per inch with four-level grayscale imaging. An in-line primer will give customers control over dot gain and ink absorption on different types of corrugated top sheets. A 100% in-line image quality inspection system on the press is tied to robust print optimisation technologies, including inkjet nozzle, alignment and uniformity correction for the highest possible imaging quality.

In addition to the new corrugated packaging press, EFI will incorporate its core Nozomi inkjet technology platform into new, high-volume printers for the signage market and other industries. EFI is planning to start installations of Nozomi C18000 presses within the next 12 months. The Green Factor With its “cool cure” LED imaging capabilities, the Nozomi C18000 press will help redefine sustainability in corrugated board production, as it will allow customers to eliminate wasteful warehousing routines for analogprinted packaging with leaner, just-intime inventory. SOUNDS SO SIMPLE, DOESN’T IT? To have a good understanding of where your business stands today, requires that you have a clear picture of the journey you have been on, the one your competitors and customers are on and the path the industry itself is taking. Of course, we know that it not as cut and dried as that. There are so many elements that have to be taken into account in all three of those areas that no individual can take on such a task alone. What do our customers want? What are the new technologies? How does my offering stack up against my competitors? Are my customers happy? What will make them happy? Have I established effective margins? Is my throughput efficient enough? And so the list goes on…. That is why we produce our member-exclusive RADAR reports every six months. The aim is to provide details that can help answer some of these questions and discuss trends and growth rates at all levels across the European narrow web supply chain. It is also why you and other members of this dynamic and vibrant industry look forward to its half-yearly publication. RADAR reports identify key topics, trends and headline figures that are indicators of pressure points members should be aware of, challenges to be prepared for, and opportunities to seize and transform into revenue-generating services. Brand-owner viewpoint It is with the latter in mind that we take a look at the

Labels and Packaging • June 2016

47

first set of interesting statistics to come out of the most recent RADAR’s regarding the brand owner viewpoint. It shows that slightly more than half of the respondents cited faster delivery times as a leading market force. This is a perfect example of how focussing on challenging issues and pain points can create an opportunity. By shortening delivery times, operations can retain business and even attract new clients that were potentially looking further afield. In addition, 42% of companies said they may migrate away from selfadhesive labels for some applications in 2016, leaving 58% who plan to continue using self-adhesive labeling. This makes it clear that alternative processes are being considered and actively adopted. The survey found that food was the primary market moving from self-adhesive labels to shrink labelling. Perhaps more perplexing is the news that only a third (33%) of brand owners and buyers will stay with their current supplier in 2016. Although the prospect for incumbent suppliers of existing jobs being sourced elsewhere is never pleasant, it is also an encouragement to review one’s own

unique selling proposition(s), increase one’s understanding of the market and to invest in one’s own positioning towards key markets and customers. So when it comes to additional factors that may attract business or help retain existing clients, what could help you land those elusive orders? Well, 48% of respondents cited Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as increasingly important, while recycling was a key consideration for 59% and environmental certification for 41%. Converter viewpoint In another RADAR issue, 53% of converter respondents indicated that 7 to 14 days is the average lead time, showing a significant shortening in lead times. But perhaps some work still needs to be done – particularly at the two-week mark. It is clear that some geographic markets are having a harder time than others. For example, central Europe saw just a 4% average increase in profit levels in 2014, and Eastern Europe recorded a 7% increase. Converters in UK and Ireland fared better with a 12% increase in profit levels in 2014 (at the moment this is written, our RADAR partner LPC is collecting input for the 2015 converter survey).

In terms of looking at market opportunities, 35% of converters are interested in markets outside of selfadhesive labels. 40% are already active in sleeve converting, 27% in flexible packaging converting and 20% in converting in-mould applications. There is no standing still in this dynamic marketplace; and many operations are looking at what new markets they can embrace, with sleeve converting being the most prominent target. This is likely due to processes that dovetail readily with traditional labelling technologies or that support traditional self-adhesive label customers looking to enjoy potential growth markets. While making the most of the opportunities that present themselves, converters have also been on the lookout for potential market pressures – the primary one being industry consolidation; 43% identified this as their biggest threat. These are just some of the highlights from FINAT RADAR, and there is much more in the full reports. By incorporating the RADAR insights into strategic planning processes,

Digital versus traditional packaging print Whereas digital printing has succeeded in establishing its value in the traditional areas of the print media industry, adoption has been a bit slower in the packaging industry with the exception of the label printing market, which began adopting digital print technologies relatively early.

Labels and Packaging • June 2016

49

Labels and Packaging • June 2016

50 This is due to multiple factors: there were no relevant digital systems available; the requirements of the packaging industry are completely different from those in the traditional printing industry; and the players in the slightly conservative packaging industry have taken a little more time to adopt a digital future than their commercial printing counterparts. But the tide is beginning to turn. A growing numbers of producers and customers are recognising the benefits of digital packaging print and implementing the technology. Without a doubt, one of the "breakthrough moments" was the now legendary Coca-Cola Sharea-Coke campaign. Just a few months following Coke’s innovative approach to placing names on coke cans, for example, Ferrero followed suit with variable Nutella labels. The market is growing According to the latest forecasts, the volume of the worldwide print market is set to grow to 420 billion euros by 2020 from a current level of around 407 billion – following the significant sharp decline in the years between 2008 and 2010 from 438 billion euros to 407

billion euros. Within the global print market, packaging print is the only area that will grow significantly, with an increase of 3.3% per year, for a share of the overall market of 141 billion euros by the year 2020. This includes folding boxes, labels and flexible packaging. In terms of specific printing processes, flexo printing is projected to see 2.6% growth, and digital printing 8%. Today, only 7% of packaging is printed digitally, but that share is projected to grow significantly. For packaging converters, digital printing can be a logical adjunct to analogue printing and simultaneously allow them to develop new applications. But more on this later.

papers and the drying that requires also remains a serious challenge. Once these challenges are resolved, digital packaging printing will impact production significantly, even revolutionise it," Hubert Marte, Forum Wellpappe Österreich (Austrian Corrugated Cardboard Forum).

"Just how much digital print technologies will impact production depends on how quickly digital printing presses for the industrial production of packaging are developed. A further – very important – factor is the cost of procurement, maintenance and repair, as well as the cost of the printing inks. In addition, it has not yet been possible to achieve all Pantone colours with digital printing. Printing onto coated

Packaging trends The choice for consumers has become considerably greater and brands are anxious to differentiate themselves from competitors to acquire market share. Packaging is playing an increasingly important role in acquiring consumers “at the shelf” when the final buying decision is made. Packaging increasingly must influence consumers and engage all of their senses. Marte comments, "The growing trend toward smaller packaging units, ever stricter safety regulations for packaging and booming online sales will continue to drive growth in the packaging market over the next few years. For this reason, it will become increasingly important that packaging is more environmentally friendly, recyclable, printed in high quality and intelligent, integrated into the Internet of Things with features like QR codes, more customization and more.”

It is also worth mentioning that the report The Future of Package Printing to 2019 by Vlad Savinov, Smithers Pira, 2014, anticipates an annual growth of 17% for digital printing. This makes it the fastest growing technology within packaging print, projected to reach a volume of 19 billion U.S. dollars by 2019.

"The packaging market continues to be marked by integration and consolidation. Overcapacity and resultant price wars are the order of the day. Growth in the entire sector really depends on consumer behaviour. Their buying decisions are often driven by complicated graphical and colour representations at the point of sale. This requires a high level of investment in value added processes by packaging converters in order to create packaging that stands out," Eduard Fischer, Managing Director, Schwarzach. The European view The European packaging market is

52 continuing to expand due to growing population and converters are using all available print technologies. "The key market trends we see are ever more products on the shelves and microsegmentation to address a variety of consumer demographics,” reports Francois Martin, responsible for worldwide Marketing Graphic Business Solutions at HP. “For many years, HP has enjoyed double-digit growth in the number of pages printed digitally as a result.” The packaging market – including the related digital printing solutions – can essentially be divided into four sectors: labels, flexible packaging, folding cartons and corrugated. Each of these areas has its own dynamics and characteristics. The label market was the first to recognise the benefits of digital printing. The other markets are now following suit, but not at the same speed or via the same route. The label market has a 10- to 12-year head start on corrugated in terms of digital

printing implementation. Advantages of digital printing for packaging Today's media fragmentation means that consumers are continuously bombarded with information and

messages that they virtually ignore as a matter of course. Packaging is certainly one of the last media channels that still attracts consumer attention. But to achieve this, products must stand out on the shelf; and brand owners are responding with ever-faster product

54 It's almost as if label design is turning into fashion design. Some wine bottles are becoming style icons as a result. And the next digital wave is already on the horizon: flexible packaging, folding cartons and corrugated will also be riding this tide.

cycles and more relevant packaging, which also contributes to smaller lot sizes, shorter production cycle times and more demand for digital printing technologies. What also drives more interest in digital printing are demographic developments, including increasing numbers of single-person households with purchasing behaviours that differ from those of larger families, including quantities purchased and shopping budget. In addition, households of the 50-plus generation have unique requirements for packaging. Plus consumers are more sensitive cost and environmental issues as well as convenience. For packaging producers, this means handling an increasing number of smaller orders. The turnaround times are becoming shorter as a result, and production planning is becoming more complex. "Digital printing helps companies meet these new challenges and optimise their production as compared to analogue methodologies,” Francois Martin, Marketing Graphic Business Solutions, HP. Stephan Ratt, CEO of the Ratt Pack Group in Austria, agrees. "We currently see growth in minimum order sizes in the non-food sector,” he says. “That means more firms here are entering the fray by acquiring digital printing presses."

The world of digital labels HP has now installed more than 1,000 digital presses in the market, and considers that digital printing has become mainstream. Xeikon has well over 300 systems installed, and more than 50% of its sales now come from the packaging industry. Traditional companies such as Heidelberger Druckmaschinen have gone down the digital path via Gallus, and since Labelexpo 2015 are fully on-board with digital with the Gallus DCS 340. This converting system, developed in a joint project by Heidelberg and Fujifilm, is equipped with the latest generation of inkjet print heads and prints at a quality level that was previously only achievable in offset printing. It delivers high-end UV inkjet print quality with a native resolution of 1200 dpi at a speed of 50 metres per minute, with the flexibility and efficiency of digital printing combined with the benefits of flexo printing. Also unique to this solution, in addition to outstanding print quality, is the integration of inline finishing modules. The Gallus DCS 340 prints digitally from roll to the finished, die-cut label; all in one pass. French company Autajon bought and tested the first system, and has now ordered three further systems. Label print shops increasingly recognise that digital printing can be used as a logical adjunct to the long print runs in flexo or offset printing. Designs can also be changed rapidly.

Flexible packaging The market for flexible packaging is significant and will continue to develop digitally in the coming 5 years, but it is also subject to social change (primarily due to external mobility). People eat and drink on the move (nomadic mobility). Flexible packs are gaining popularity and increasingly replacing fixed packaging. In the food sector in particular, flexible packs are easy to handle, and they fulfil the current trend for less waste and a smaller carbon footprint. The convenience factor cannot be ignored in this segment, either. Digital printing provides manufacturers of flexible packaging the opportunity to grow their businesses. The formula is a simple one: high quality packaging, produced digitally, with just-in-time delivery. This is why the technology is currently gaining ground, supported by presses such as the HP Indigo 20000 that issued a clear signal to the packaging market with its launch. Swiss firm O. Kleiner KG was the first company in the world to install an Indigo 20000 and specialise in the production of flexible packaging using flexo, gravure and more recently, digital printing. "Digital printing is gaining importance in flexible packaging printing," says CEO Martin Kleiner. "The HP Indigo 20000 introduced a quantum leap in digital production of flexible packaging and opens up many new opportunities for flexible packaging print with its printing width of 736 millimetres." O. Kleiner KG has leveraged its HP Indigo 20000 to produce small runs as add-ons and to provide new options for customers in the smaller run sector. A good example of this is closures for small jam jars. Whilst flavours such as strawberry are produced in large runs, other flavours such as raspberry have smaller batch sizes. These will in future be produced using digital printing. Further applications include test packages or personalised packaging.

56 This gigantic inkjet rotation with a web width of 2.80 metres and with digital pre-printing of the top layer is opening up new options for the flexible production of corrugated packaging in different sizes and run lengths that were not economically feasible before. "Finishers and their customers need to develop both customerappropriate and effective packaging whilst reducing costs," comments Eric Wiesner, General Manager, PageWide Web Press Division at HP. "With the combined expertise of HP and KBA, we have now launched the world's most productive roll printing press for corrugated. The HP PageWide Web Press T1100S allows finishers in the high-end sector to offer added value by combining pre-print and digital printing in one machine."

Colourful world of folding cartons Digital printing is still relatively new in this market sector within the packaging world, even though there are now several excellent examples of applications here. The folding carton industry tends to use the technology for small and differentiated runs; print runs before or at the end of large, conventional runs are another application. Digital folding carton printing is currently still considered to be in the early adopter stage; in other words, the users who have recognised the trends and developed the first applications. A good example of this is Peter Sommer from Elanders in Germany who, together with Ritter Sport chocolate, concocted a fascinating project. A special website was set up where consumers were able to order personalised packaging for their Ritter Sport chocolate. This was a venture that really paid off, as customers were willing to pay considerably more for this chocolate. The project also gained recognition from Mediaware in Ireland who implements packaging projects for Microsoft. There are now a growing number of projects of this nature as brand owners recognise the potential and savy print shops are helping them to realise creative ideas.

Packaging made from corrugated To date firms processing corrugated have been slow to adopt digital printing technologies, with the exception of those using flatbed systems (HP Scitex, Durst, Mimaki, swissQprint…). However, this is more due to the fact that until now there had not been many systems available on the market that could be used for corrugated. But this will be changing relatively quickly due to providers such as Bobst or the HP / KBA joint venture, both of which will be exhibiting at drupa 2016. And the large players in the industry very clearly see the advantages of being able to respond to market requirements more quickly and thus being able to offer a higher level of service. The use of digital technology is also helping to optimise workflows and potentially also re-design production sites – following the principle of using the right technology for the right jobs. Digital Colossus in pre-print Following barely two years of development, HP and KBA presented the world's first HP PageWide Web Press T1100S to a group of visitors in Würzburg in November 2015.

The first customer for the HP T1100S was DS Smith Packaging. The company was interested because in comparison to standard analogue printing technologies, the system offers considerably greater productivity and flexibility, particularly with small and medium sized runs. Thanks to its high productivity of over 30,000 square meters of printed area per hour, the press can be used cost-effectively for large runs as well. The Brits are clearly taking the project very seriously as they have already been experimenting for a year with the T400 system purchased specifically for this purpose. Another current example in the corrugated card market comes from Bobst. At the last drupa in 2012, CEO Jean-Pascal Bobst announced that his company was developing a digital printing system. The project, shrouded in secrecy, is now in use with beta testers just a little over three years later, specifically at Model in Switzerland and at Schumacher in Germany. This industrial digital solution for printing packaging and displays made from corrugated material uses Kodak's Stream Inkjet technology and offers not only intense colour reproduction and one of the highest print resolutions available, but also functions with foodcompatible printing inks. The digital sheet press designed for four-colour printing on a wide range of uncoated and coated corrugated permits the personalisation of runs large

and small of packaging and displays at high speeds. At an outstanding speed of up to 200 metres a minute, the new press delivers high quality on sheets up to a maximum size of 1.3 x 2.1 metres. Special applications These days, digital packaging printing is not restricted to just the areas mentioned above. Labels and codes are not covered in this article as that would be far beyond its scope. However, there is a range of special applications that shows just how versatile and creative digital printing can be in practical use. Here are two examples: The German start-up company mymuesli recently installed a Heidelberg Jetmaster Dimension at its site in Heidelberg for the customised printing of muesli packaging. That means you can not only buy your favourite muesli but you can also design your own muesli container yourself with a picture and text. The Jetmaster Dimension was modified for mymuesli’s special requirements and installed in the company's Heidelberg print shop. It is the first machine of this type that Heidelberg has installed directly in a retail outlet. The filling machine manufacturer KHS has, together with Xaar, implemented a project where printing is carried out directly onto PET bottles at the Belgian Martens Brouwerij. The digital direct printing system uses Xaar 1002 GS6

print heads and achieves a physical resolution of 360 dpi where text and graphics are printed using lowmigration LED inks in 4C plus white. This means that 12,000 bottles an hour can be printed directly. "The system now allows us to change graphics in just minutes rather than weeks," confirms Phil Johnson at NMP, the KHS subsidiary that developed this system. "The use of digital technologies gives the packaging industry the ability to participate in the micro marketing trend. The option to add new designs to bottles on the fly is a powerful marketing tool that permits brands to localise and personalise their products in a customer-oriented manner," Phil Johnson, Managing Director, NMP. Looking ahead to drupa Visitors to drupa 2016 will certainly see several solutions that demonstrate the implementation of digital technology in the packaging industry. One example of this is Bennty Landa’s nanotechnology that this time will be shown with a complete system for packaging production. It is a fascinating sector that will be stimulated by all of these developments. And above all… this is a growth market. Good news for the industry!

THE PLACE OF A LABEL IN A CHANGING WORLD The world of labelling is unquestionably one of the most dynamic and innovative industry sectors today. Thomas Hagmaier, current President of FINAT and CEO of Hagmaier Etiketten, offers an informed summary of current status of 2016: “Delivering a fine piece of label design and print that sells the product on the retail shelf is still essential, but today our industry is challenged to provide so much more, for the brand owner and the consumer. To meet an ever-growing raft of brand owner demands, the label supply chain has to meet challenges posed not only by industry innovation, but also by new packaging and labelling choices, online retailing, incredible refinements in imaging technologies, the need for sustainable solutions and, of course, international regulations. As the knowledge hub for its member companies - who represent the entire label supply chain - FINAT is wellpositioned to provide a unique, expert

evaluation of what 2016 will bring for the label market and for self-adhesive labelling in particular. It is a complex picture, and FINAT defines some of the major areas where change, development and innovation are evident. The changing world of label print The coming together of digital and analogue print technologies for label and packaging print will continue apace in 2016. Enhancements like UV/EB curing, will make it possible for the label printer to embrace both short and long print runs and a wider portfolio of label formats, from self-adhesive and wet glue labels to wraparound, inmould, shrink- and stretch-sleeve labels,

Labels and Packaging • June 2016

59

and even flexible packaging. Traditional roll-to-roll print technologies are also evolving to accommodate a choice of label types in addition to self-adhesive labels. Increasing numbers of label printers will offer brand owners this extended label supply service, delivering the opportunity for brand owners’ packaging managers to fine-tune their supplier base. Digital pre-press for high-definition print, and even more sophisticated colour management systems to deliver image consistency across the print processes, are currently a high-level focus. Label print is also reflecting the increasingly important role of digital technology in everyday life. The addition of QR codes and other devices, printed electronics and personalisation as part of label print is expected to grow in 2016. Environmental concerns The complexity of the self-adhesive label substrate’s construction led to the establishment of FINAT’s highlyproactive Recycling Committee, and the provision of in-depth information on all aspects of label and label waste recycling. Label release liner, a

high-value, recyclable product, now benefits from a number of appropriate locations for recycling. In 2016 FINAT is committed to place a strong emphasis on encouraging brand owners and label printers – the two closest industry links in the supply chain – to make more meaningful use of these facilities in the interests of sustainability. Labelling film and paper suppliers will contribute too in this arena, with continuing innovation in lower-caliper substrates and enhanced recyclability features. Market demand FINAT research indicates that overall label volumes will increase again in 2016 over prior year. Internet sales are increasing, but a product’s primary label still represents the prime medium for establishing branding and the first contact with a potential customer. In a recent end-user survey, FINAT learned that over 80% of brand owners/ packaging buyers do not believe the e-commerce platform will affect label design. The label product ‘mix’ will, however, increasingly reflect a move to shorter label print runs and just-intime delivery as, in the international consumer market, product packaging (bearing local-language labels) relocates to regional centres.

Legislation International health and safety legislation will continue to make demands on the available space on a label, particularly on food labels. The finite limits of the label space will challenge design and print. This will encourage the use of such options as multi-layer leaflet labels, linerless labels and clear film labels on clear container substrates (the ‘no-label’ look) where back print on the label is possible. A profitable outcome “The label industry supply chain is extended, representing several different specialties in both equipment and substrates. That is why FINAT’s role in providing a leading-edge knowledge base and maintaining reliable market data is so important, particularly in today’s fast-changing environment”, says Jules Lejeune, FINAT Managing Director. “Our members believe 2016 will bring more profitable business for them as suppliers of label print, print equipment and label substrates, as they continue to innovate with even more sophisticated solutions to meet the demands of brand owners and consumers around the globe.”

Global Trends Report 2016 Positive economic assessments but challenging times for much of the world. Last year we reported an almost universally positive picture of printers’ own economic con dence, even though the more detailed results did not always support that view. This year the picture is subtler with North America con dent and Europe recovering steadily, but many of the other regions, whilst still positive overall, express signi cantly more caution than last year. Those printers serving the Functional and Packaging markets1 remain very positive for the future, but those serving the Commercial market were cautious and those serving the Publishing market even more so. In other words, for this year’s results we need in part to look past the ‘global all markets’ results and view the results at a more granular regional and market level. But to start back at the beginning, let us remind readers that we asked two broad questions on how positively participants considered the current economic condition of their company and what they think are their prospects for the coming 12 months2. We have described these as the drupa Barometers of economic con dence. 37% of the global panel of printers described their current condition in 2015 as good and 12% said their condition was poor – a positive net balance of 25%. Looking ahead printers were in general more positive with 50% expecting their economic condition to improve in 2016 compared with just 6% expecting it to deteriorate – a positive net balance of 44%. 1. De nitions of markets are given in the brief glossary at the end of the executive summary. 2. Numbers of participants by region and market are given in the Appendix of the full report

In terms of end markets, those serving Packaging and Functional markets have con dence. Those in the Commercial

market have had a tougher 2015 but still look forward to 2016 very positively whilst those in the Publishing market have had a tougher 2015 and are more cautious for 2016. Turning to suppliers, the general picture

was also optimistic with a positive net balance of 49%. Regional results were patchier with current performance marked down for South/ Central America, Africa and the Middle East. Prospects for 2016 were more even

66 and surprisingly positive, given what are clearly dif cult conditions in some regions. It must be said that the broader economic summary that follows this executive summary and the more detailed nancial performance measures below should give fresh reasons for caution. The challenge is most clearly visible in the following chart reporting the key nancial measures for printers. Prices and margins continue to fall in most regions and for most printers the solution in the short term at least is to increase utilisation and therefore revenues. But once again we must examine market variations by region to get a fuller picture e.g. the chart below on regional revenues shows a very mixed picture even within markets3. It is the same very mixed picture for prices for both regions and markets. 3. There were insuf cient Functional printer participants for data to be analyzed at a regional level.

en such tough trading conditions across much of the globe, it is surprising to report that employee numbers have crept up with a global positive net balance of 4% – perhaps a re ection of the ever more challenging work mix and the failure of most printers to grasp the opportunity for automation. Like printers, the suppliers reported an almost universal decline in prices and margins (N. America being the clear exception). But all regions except S/C America and Australia/ Oceania were able to report revenue increases. Overall con dence was down on last year, with better pictures for Europe and N. America offset by greater caution for S/C America, Africa, Australia/ Oceania and Asia. In terms of revenue mix, core sales and spares/servicing were strongest and disappointingly training was again weakest. Given the varied economic conditions across the regions it is not surprising that there were striking variations in nancial conditions reported. Two facts emerged globally. First that everyone suffers from poor debtor days and second that printers reported better nancial conditions in general than the suppliers.

Conventional print declines offset by digital print gains This is a remarkably diverse industry in terms of its core print technology. None of the fourteen differing print technologies scored less than a 10% penetration in at least one of the markets. However it is the digital technologies (particularly cutsheet colour + 28%) that dominate in terms of growth in print volume. There is still growth in sheetfed offset, thanks to publishing (net positive balance of +7%) and packaging (+12%). The growth in exo and gravure is from packaging (+18% and +3% respectively) and the growth in screen is in functional (+11%). The trends in the changing production mix of conventional print continue with ever-shorter run lengths and reduced lead times, but some sign of a slow down in the growth of the number of jobs. As for digital print, there is a steady increase in the volume

and value of digital print, with the exception of packaging where only 13% reporting that it represents more than 25% of turnover compared to 35% for commercial, 24% for publishing and 59% for functional. This result is in turn driven by the proportion of digital print that is variable, with 59% of functional printers and 35% of commercial printers reporting that more than 25% of their digital turnover was variable by value. More disappointing to report is that for the second year running there is no signi cant global increase in either the proportion of Web to Print installations (25% 2015, 26% 2016) or in the volume of business being processed through them. N. America as a region and the Functional print market are the clear exceptions.

GOSS surges forward with packaging in Asia Pacific With the new patented Embedded Color Bar Control technology and the recent Thallo line acquisition, Goss is set to revolutionise web offset for packaging Mimaki, a leading global manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers and cutting plotters for the sign/graphics, textile/apparel and industrial markets, today announced that it will be making a brand-new ink available in Summer 2016. Mimaki LUS-350 is a unique, stretchable ink suitable for a wide range of thermoforming applications, especially those requiring exceptional hardness and durability such as automotive parts. Mimaki LUS-350 ink is compatible with the Mimaki UJF7151plus and JFX200-2513 printers and will be available in CMYK, white and a unique clear ink. “This new ink will change the way vacuum moulded – or thermoformed – applications are created,” says Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “It brings the benefits of digital printing to this segment of the market, addressing requirements for fast turn, short-run moulded objects with exceptional graphic quality. Previously, objects had to be formed and then have the images applied manually or with screen printing, Before Embedded Color Bar technology

a time-consuming and expensive process. Now thermoformed objects can be imaged before forming, using Mimaki digital printers with an ink that will not crack or otherwise be damaged during the heat-based forming process. It will provide a beautiful finish for applications such as car parts, mockups, moulded signs, kiosks and more.” The details Mimaki LUS-350 ink will stretch up to 350% when heated to between 120deg C and 200 deg C. After cooling to room temperature, the ink’s rigidity is restored, while securely adhering to the moulded product without cracking or peeling. Thus, the ink is unique in providing rigidity, durability and stretchability to serve a broad range of applications with no-compromise image quality. Images are printed on flat substrates using specialised imaging software and then formed into the desired shape using vacuum, thermoforming or other moulding techniques.

adds, “is that intricate textures and designs in fine decorative prints are retained even after moulding. What’s even more exciting is the ability to apply multiple layers of ink to create raised areas in the image for further enhancement, without worrying about cracking or the quality of the adhesion.” Mimaki’s LUS-350 clear ink is also unique in the market, adding texture or a glossy finish that can’t be achieved with coloured ink alone.
