TITLE: COMPARATIVE STUDY ON BIOLOGICAL FACTORS INFLUENCING THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALLOIMMUNISATION IN SICKLE CELL DISEASE PATIENTS IN ILE-IFE, NIGERIA
This is the first study in western Nigeria to examine the biological factors influencing alloimmunisation in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. The research examined inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, red cell phenotypes, and nutritional status in transfused SCD patients, providing critical insights into alloimmunisation mechanisms. Findings revealed elevated oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in transfused SCD patients, correlating with increased antibody formation. Haematological assessments showed significantly higher platelet counts and neutrophil activity, indicating inflammation. Nutritional analysis highlights deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre, with 76,3% of participants failing to meet daily calorie requirements, exacerbating alloimmunisation risks. This pioneering study expands the knowledge in haematology and blood transfusion science, offering novel insights into the interplay between inflammation, oxidative stress, and alloimmunisation in SCD. It underscores the need for comprehensive patient care, integrating nutritional intervention, inflammation control, and improved transfusion strategies. The work provides a foundation for further research and enhanced clinical management of SCD patients. Three articles have been published in accredited journals from the study, while one manuscript is under review in an accredited journal.

TITLE: AN ASSESSMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR AND BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN AIRCREW WITH PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO HIGH ALTITUDE: NIGERIA AS A CASE STUDY
Various factors are responsible for the exponential increase in the number of individuals exposed to high altitudes worldwide. About 100 million lowlanders travel to mountainous areas above 2,500 m yearly, while roughly 400 million people are residents in areas above 1500 m. While highlanders suffer from the harmful impacts of high altitude, lowlanders who visit high altitudes also encounter similar disadvantages. The study investigated how exposure to high altitude and associated pathways affect insulin sensitivity, gluco-lipid regulation, renal and hepatic functions in aircrew members of local airlines (PHA-L) and international airlines (PHA-I) who have been travelling for at least five years. The cross-sectional study consists of a total of 300 aviation workers assigned to 3 groups (n=100) subjects per group, using random sampling method. An open-ended questionnaire was also administered to the participants prior to sample collection to obtain socio demographic data. Anthropometric data and biochemical parameters were determined in all participants. Overall, high altitude exposure led to impaired renal and hepatic functions, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. These harmful effects, which were mediated by oxidative stress and inflammation, were significantly higher in PHA-I than in PHA-L. Two articles have been published from this study, while three other manuscripts are under review in peerreview accredited journals.

TITLE: EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIAL, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECT AND THE MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS FROM SOUTH AFRICAN INDIGENOUS PLANTS USED IN THE MANAGEMENT OF DIABETES-RELATED MALE INFERTILITY
Hyperglycaemia is the main instigator of the development of male infertility in men with diabetes mellitus (DM) resulting from oxidative stress. Supplementation with antioxidants sourced from medicinal plants is beneficial in the treatment of DM-related male infertility. However, a search for more efficacious and easily accessibly medicinal plants is paramount. This study focused on the identification and compound screening of aqueous leaf extracts of medicinal plants commonly used in Limpopo for the treatment of diabetes-related male infertility. This study further investigated the effect of plant extracts on sperm parameters in hyperglycaemic-induced human sperm. Two medicinal plants (Garcinia livingstonei and Androstachys johnsonii) were identified and used in this study. Compound profiling of the extracts revealed the presence of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic compounds. While hyperglycaemia induction led to the reduction of sperm parameters such as sperm motility, vitality, DNA integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential, and capacitation due to oxidative stress, both plant extract (concentration dependent) improved the sperm parameters. The findings revealed the therapeutic potential of the selected plants in the treatment of DM-related male infertility. From this study, four articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals, while two are currently under review.

TITLE: AMELIORATIVE EFFECT OF HELICHRYSUM CYMOSUM EXTRACTS AND BIOSYNTHESIZED ZINC OXIDE NANOPARTICLES ON C3A HEPATOCYTES, L6 MYOCYTES AND TM4 SERTOLI CELLS
The study investigated the potential health benefits of Helichrysum cymosum extracts and biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles, focusing on their impact on three specific cell lines: C3A hepatocytes, L6 myocytes, and TM4 Sertoli cells using in vitro models. These cells play a crucial role in liver function, muscle metabolism, and male reproductive health, respectively. This research underlined the relevance of medicinal plant applications in alleviating oxidative stress and cellular damage, which are among the major causes of diabetes mellitus and male reproductive dysfunction. The findings did not only demonstrate the therapeutic potential of the medicinal plant, but also reveal its ability in combating chronic health issues, including diabetes, inflammation, and reproductive dysfunction. The current study presents a novel and alternative treatment option, with prospects for future development of antidiabetic drugs and male infertility drugs. From this study, three articles have been published in accredited journals, while the fourth manuscript is undergoing peer review in an accredited journal.

TITLE: PERFORMANCE OPTIMISATION OF HORIZONTAL AXIS WIND TURBINE ROTORS RETROFITTED WITH AN AERODYNAMIC DEVICE
In recognition of outstanding research in wind energy, we celebrate the doctoral work of Daniel Barnard, which explored an innovative method to enhance horizontal axis wind turbine performance. This study investigated the retrofitting of a ring vane (a circular aerofoil-supported structure) near the rotor hub to improve aerodynamic efficiency. Through computational fluid dynamics simulations and physical testing, the research evaluated various ring vane configurations to determine their impact on turbine performance. This work contributed to the sustainability of wind farms because it provides a way to improve the efficiency of already installed wind turbines, and also provides a research path to reconfiguring wind farms with retrofitted aerodynamic devices where the environmental conditions might change over time.

20 YEARS OF GROWING FROM GREATS #CPUT20YEARS
On 1 January 2005, Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon merged to form the Cape Peninsula University of Technology – CPUT. This year, CPUT is proud to celebrate 20 years as an amalgamated institution.
The digital tree depicted in our 20-year celebrations symbolises growth, connectedness, and oneness. It provides vital connections, mental sustenance, safety, and support for the CPUT community. The branches represent the various fields of study and research, all interlinked; while the trunk supports these branches, and facilitates growth by providing what is needed, in the same way that the support services facilitate the learning, teaching, and research functions at the University.
A resilient, healthy tree needs sturdy, developed, and nourished roots. The roots of the tree symbolise the strong heritage institutions that merged to form CPUT. Without the solid base of these, CPUT would not be where it is today. The circuit board overlay represents CPUT’s evolution by using the latest technology as a growth framework and enabler. Our development is grounded in the use of technology, and the interconnectedness that networking provides.
