TITLE: MODELLING AND OPTIMISATION OF VUV PHOTOLYSIS FOR ETHYLENE CONTROL: FOR POTENTIAL APPLICATION IN POSTHARVEST MANAGEMENT
Fruits and vegetables remain metabolically active after harvest, producing ethylene gas that accelerates ripening and senescence, reducing shelf-life and causing postharvest losses. To address this, Dr Mabusela developed a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis reactor to remove ethylene during fruit storage. The reactor significantly lowered ethylene levels and maintained apple quality, extending shelflife by 46 days. This study holds significant importance for the fruit industry, offering an innovative solution to enhance fruit preservation and reduce postharvest losses. From this research, Dr Mabusela has published five journal articles, one international conference proceeding, and has two more articles ready for submission.

TITLE: BIOGAS PRODUCTION FROM ECKLONIA MAXIMA USING AN ANAEROBIC DIGESTION PROCESS: INVESTIGATION, ANALYSIS AND OPTIMISATION
Seaweed serves as a viable alternative to traditional food crops for biogas production. This research focused on the use of Ecklonia Maxima to produce biomethane through anaerobic digestion. Biomethane can be utilised as an energy source for generating electricity and heat, which can power industrial processes, as well as households. Additionally, the study explored ways to optimise the process by examining the morphology of seaweed to maximise biomethane production. The findings have resulted in one publication in a high-impact journal, with another publication currently under review. The research was also presented at an international conference, and is prominently featured on the front page of the journal where it was published.

TITLE: OPTIMIZATION METHOD FOR A HYBRID MICROGRID ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WITH RESERVE MARGINS
Mr Mquqwana’s thesis thesis offers a novel optimization technique for hybrid microgrid energy management, focusing on integrating reserve margins to ensure system stability and dependability. The project aims to develop a new method that optimizes the performance of distributed energy resources (DERs), including hybrid microgrids’ conventional generators, battery storage, and renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Reserve margins are incorporated into the proposed optimization model, which is crucial for balancing the unpredictability of renewable generation and demand fluctuations while ensuring that the microgrid can respond to unforeseen circumstances or unexpected events. Incorporating reserve margins into the optimization process significantly enhances the microgrid’s capacity to maintain consistent and secure operation, particularly in fluctuating and unpredictable conditions. The findings demonstrate that the developed optimization strategy significantly enhances the dependability and efficiency of hybrid microgrids, providing a strong foundation for future energy management system applications. This project facilitates the transition to more robust and decentralized energy systems, advancing sustainable energy solutions and encouraging the grid’s incorporation of renewable energy sources. The research work has been published in a Q1 Journal with a high impact factor.

TITLE: 5G NEW RADIO AND FOG COMPUTING SCALABILITY AND QOS MANAGEMENT
This work investigates the advancements in fifth generation (5G) mobile technology, with a particular focus on the 5G Fog Radio Access Network (5G-FRAN) architecture and resource optimisation. It provides an in-depth analysis of the latest 5G network architectures, and demonstrates the efficacy of HsMM in optimising limited spectrum resources using machine learning techniques. Additionally, the study introduces and evaluates two ED-based feature extraction techniques (PCA and LDA) across multiple machine learning models, significantly reducing computational complexity, while improving model performance. These techniques enable efficient processing of large datasets, enhancing the accuracy, reliability, and scalability of machine learning models in 5G-FRAN applications. The work is published in two DHET listed journals, and further two research papers are in progress.

TITLE: A FRAMEWORK FOR SUPPORTING FOUNDATION PHASE NOVICE TEACHERS’ INSTRUCTION COMPETENCIES IN NATURAL SCIENCE
Elizabeth Fredericks’ study focused on the development of novice teachers’ competencies to teach Natural Science in the Foundation Phase within the South African context. Findings revealed that novice teachers lacked Natural Science knowledge, pedagogy, and confidence. An eight-week intervention programme was developed to provide support to enhance content and subject matter knowledge and pedagogical skills. The use of inquiry-based practices and reflective strategies resulted in significant cognitive development, and a shift towards learner-centred, constructivist teaching, bridging the theory-practice gap. The study culminated in the development of the Collaborative, Reflective and Cognitive Development framework for teacher training and professional development, emphasising collaborative learning, cognitive processing, and learner autonomy. The research contributes to the broader discourse on science education and teacher readiness, offering recommendations for improving pre- and inservice training. Recommendations include revising the curriculum to explicitly address scientific literacy and the Nature of Science, implementing targeted teacher training, and professional development, using the developed framework.

Uit die blou van onse hemel, Uit die diepte van ons see, Oor ons ewige gebergtes, Waar die kranse antwoord gee,
Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land.
20 YEARS OF GROWING FROM GREATS #CPUT20YEARS
On 1 January 2005, Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon merged to form the Cape Peninsula University of Technology – CPUT. This year, CPUT is proud to celebrate 20 years as an amalgamated institution.
The digital tree depicted in our 20-year celebrations symbolises growth, connectedness, and oneness. It provides vital connections, mental sustenance, safety, and support for the CPUT community. The branches represent the various fields of study and research, all interlinked; while the trunk supports these branches, and facilitates growth by providing what is needed, in the same way that the support services facilitate the learning, teaching, and research functions at the University.
A resilient, healthy tree needs sturdy, developed, and nourished roots. The roots of the tree symbolise the strong heritage institutions that merged to form CPUT. Without the solid base of these, CPUT would not be where it is today. The circuit board overlay represents CPUT’s evolution by using the latest technology as a growth framework and enabler. Our development is grounded in the use of technology, and the interconnectedness that networking provides.
