n Pittsburgh we’re use to waiting at least 5 years for national trends to catch on locally and even though it’s common belief here, it’s generally said with a grain of salt. Pittsburgh’s transformation as of late is hitting warp speed, with craft beer at the forefront. . In the last 10 years we’ve gone from 2 craft breweries to almost 25 regionally with even more set to open this year. That number starts to rival or surpass major beer cities like Asheville, Portland, and Philadelphia. There was a time when Pittsburgh was a market that was largely ignored by expanding craft brewers, but each month more and more new breweries hit the shelves and taps with the help of our fine distributors. We are a city that can no longer be ignored and we are thirsty for more. We have plenty of reasons to celebrate craft beer’s success, so it’s the perfect time to have our 4th annual Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. I raise my glass to you because if you’re reading this, you’re the reason this crazy-beer fueled marathon happens. Whether you’re drinking at the bar, unloading a mash tun, or finagling a 170 lb keg down a cliff into a South Side basement, this is week is for you. PCBW is run by our beer community and it doesn’t exist without that. While other craft beer weeks are run for profit and nothing else, ours is all about Pittsburgh, run by Pittsburgh beer people. If that isn’t a reason for a pint, I don’t want to know what is. Over the next 10 days let’s a raise a glass to each other and those who make this happen. Let’s show support for our friends, our family, bars, restaurants, distributors, and breweries. Beer at it’s core is a communal beverage, it brings people from all walks of life together to have a conversation and get to know one another a little better. So let’s cheers, high-five, and talk about how great it is to be a craft beer fan in Pittsburgh today.

2015

marks the fourth year for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week, and is turning out to be the largest one yet. This seems like a great time to look back and reflect on where we came from and what’s in store. In The Beginning… Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week was founded with the idea that like other cities that have a thriving beer culture, Pittsburgh deserved to have a time of the year where we celebrate all things craft beer in and around the city. This is why a few friends sitting around a table at one of their houses decided, over a few beers, that Pittsburgh needed our own week, too. Those founding fathers, so to speak, included Chris Dilla of Bocktown, Andrew Rich of Penn Brewery, Hart Johnson of Piper’s Pub, Chris Momberger and Lee Schmidt of The Stewards of Beer. Together they knew the beer industry from all angles and they, along with help from others, fermented out an idea that today we call Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. Part of this celebration is education, which is why the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Alliance operates under an educational non-profit status. By working with local brewers and venues, it is our goal to educate as many people in and around Pittsburgh about the amazing beer culture right in our own back yard. From the art that is craft brewing, to the time, effort, and artistic skill that goes into the design of local venues, Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week may be all about the beer, but at its core, PCBW is about local support and education.

Cheers,

Looking back to 2012, the beer scene in Pittsburgh was truly starting to boom. With breweries like East End Brewing and Penn Brewery in full swing as well as many others, the city quickly started attracting new breweries and businesses to our area. It was the goal of the original organizers of Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week to highlight these businesses and people, thereby educating the rest of us on how great it really is to love craft beer in Pittsburgh.

Andy Kwiatkowski President of the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Alliance Head Brewer at Hitchhiker Brewing Company

Thanks to you and your support of craft beer, PCBW has grown each year, making this the biggest craft beer week in Pittsburgh yet. With more than 300 events throughout the city, we’re thankful for those who got PCBW started, and for all of us for keeping it going.

Letter from the president

A brief history of Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week

5

Meet the board members ANDY KWIATKOWSKI

RYAN FEDERBUSCH

Andy Kwiatkowski is the Head Brewer at Hitchhiker Brewing Company in Mt. Lebanon and is serving his first term as President of the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Alliance. Andy’s Father is a homebrewer which led him into Craft Beer and ultimately homebrewing in January 2010. Since then the hobby quickly led to an obsession and ultimately his career as a brewer. Andy is highly involved with the beer community, previously he was Vice President of TRASH (Three Rivers Alliance of Serious Homebrewers) and is currently a Certified Beer Judge and the Brewer Liaison for the Steel City Big Pour. His favorite beer right now is anything local although it maybe cliche Andy is a firm believer that Western Pennsylvania beer is on the cusp of getting more national acclaim. When Andy isn’t geeking out over fermentation science or grain bills he can be found playing fetch or cuddling with his 9 month old Boston Terrier, Ninkasi.

Ryan is serving his second year on the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Alliance Board, as the Beer Distributor representative. Ryan has owned Beer Express in Robinson since 2008, but was interested in Craft Beer long before getting into the beer business. Aside from beer, Ryan is also interested in spending time with his family, home brewing (OK that’s also beer related), boating, and has begun to find enjoyment in good Whiskey. As a self proclaimed “Hop Head” Ryan enjoys almost any IPA, but can be found drinking a nice stout or porter in the winter months.

MIKE WATTERS Mike Watters is currently serving his first term as Vice President for the Pittsburgh Craft Beer alliance. For the last 5 years, Mike has been the regional sales representative for Troegs Brewing. In his time with Troegs he has done everything from walk on stage at GABF to receive medals to being covered in cherry pulp during Mad Elf season. His favorite beer in the one in his hand when you see him out. He is an avid history buff and is more than willing to regale you (or put you to sleep) with stories of ancient Rome, colonial america or world war II.

BRIAN MEYER

6

Brian is currently serving his third term as the treasurer for the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Alliance, and is also working on his third Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. A technology nut in the online education field by trade, his passion is promoting craft beer, specifically craft beer and brewing in and around Pittsburgh. Brian writes about craft beer for the Great Lakes Brewing News, Nightwire Magazine, and Craft Pittsburgh Magazine. He also shares beer knowledge on the site CraftBeerAcademy.com and local Pittsburgh Beer love at PghCraftBeers.com. Currently his favorite beer is Brett Hop from East End Brewing. Something you may not know about Brian is that he’s firewalked across red hot coals, and there wasn’t even a cold beer waiting on the other side.

NICK BOGACZ Nick is currently serving his second term as the Retail Representative for the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Alliance, and is also working on his second Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. Nick is the owner of Caliente Pizza & Draft House in Bloomfield and Allison Park. He took ownership of Caliente in Bloomfield in 2012 and opened the second location in 2014. Nick has been in the Pizza business for 19 years, falling in love with it at a young age. He always dreamed of his own Pizza Shop when the chance came he ran with it. Realizing that Craft Brewers use the best ingredients and original recipes Nick also fell in love with the craft beer industry. He is committed to growing the beer scene in Pittsburgh by giving his customers what they want at any lengths necessary. His favorite beer is the collaboration beers he and his team has brewed. This years collaboration is with East End Brewing. Nick loves taking his family on family vacations and you can bet there is pizza and beer involved on the vacations!!

JIM MOONEY Jim is currently serving his first term on the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week Board. For the past eight years, Jim has been the Specialty Division Sales Manager at Wilson McGinley, Inc., but he has been selling and promoting beer throughout the Greater Pittsburgh Area for over 15 years. Jim became Certified Cicerone in October 2014 and his favorite beer is a hoppy beer.

TODD MCDEVITT Todd McDevitt is owner of New Dimension Comics. With 29 years under his belt in business, he has 5 stores in the Pittsburgh region. Years ago, he discovered that meeting friends over a beer was much more fulfilling if it was a craft beer. He embraced that path & sought out new brews, venues, breweries, and festivals discovering a deeper craving for craft beer. His passion is obvious when you get him talking on the subject. His dedication to craft beer caught the attention of PCBW board members and he was asked to join this year. His favorite “go to” beer is Fatheads Head Hunter, but he often quests for forbidden fruits such as Zombie Dust, Black Note, Cascade sours, & other brews from out of our region. His favorite beer of all time is Good Morning, Mekong from Cigar City and should they brew it again, he will not hesitate to fly to Tampa to enjoy it again. Todd can be found on Untappd as Alelongatedman and Twitter @alelongatedman.

ALI WYROSTEK Ali Wyrostek is currently serving her first term on the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week Board. Ali is the brewery representative to Long Trail, Otter Creek, and Wolaver’s Organic. While Ali enjoys selling and promoting beer throughout Western PA, she also is an avid soccer player and long distance runner. Although her background is in higher education, the Polish Sensation has always been an advocate for craft beer. As far as favorite beer, its hard for her to pick a favorite child, but tends to lean more towards hops, like Long Trail Limbo IPA or Otter Creek Overgrown. Something you may not know about Ali is she is the proud owner of two very unique dogs; a Lab-Dachshund and a Bernese-Beagle.

DANA STAUDT This is Dana’s first term serving on the board of Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. She is also serving her second term as the Secretary of Three Rivers Underground Brewers (TRUB), a local home brew club. Dana has enjoyed home brewing for about 6 years or so and recently became a Certified Beer Judge. During the work week, she administers Federal Student Aid to students at Washington & Jefferson College. You may also find her serving beer samples at local establishments most weekends for Stewards of Beer. She doesn’t like to play favorites when it comes to beer choice, but says if it emanates a deep orange or amber hue and bursts with citrus aroma and flavor, she’ll probably drink more than one. In her former life, she was an archaeologist.

David Cerminara is currently representing the brewers of Pittsburgh for Craft Beer Week. A beer brewer with a passion for Mead, David opened Apis Mead & Winery in Carnegie, July 2014. Having Been a brewer for Penn Brewery for over 4 years he brought numerous connections with this city’s brewers and the craft brewing community to help organize the PCBW collaboration beers. His favorite Beers change season to season, but one constant is that it is always one of this city’s great local libations. One thing you might not know about David is he likes Turtles, No honestly he really likes Turtles.

Overview of events What would a craft beer week be without events? At the heart of Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week are the hundreds of events thrown by our generous sponsors. While few of us need a good excuse to head out and enjoy a few great beers with friends, there’s something special about finding a unique beer that’s hardly ever on tap, a giveaway from your favorite brewery, or even a cereal and beer pairing in the morning!

So you say you like beer AND food? Well then, there are some standout events for you, too. There are a few beer and food pairings throughout the week including Pies and Pints beer dinner with Eliza’s Oven and Hop Farm Brewing, Pizza and beer pairing with Caliente Pizza and Lost Abbey/Port Brewing, and even some beer and cupcake events with Café Chocolade!

When it comes to Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week, it all comes down to the events, and this year we have some of the best events we’ve ever had. If you want to get your feet wet there are more than forty beer samplings where you can taste a new beer or even get a sweet giveaway with your favorite brew. If you’re a diehard fan of a specific brewery, then you’ll love the more than 25 tap takeovers being held over the 10 days of PCBW 2015.

There will be quite a few firkins floating around during PCBW this year, including ones from Full Pint Brewing, Lavery Brewing, Rivertowne Brewing, and even a few collaboration beers, all in their real ale glory.

If you’re a rare beer hunter, then this is definitely your favorite time of year. Throughout the week you’ll find more than 25 special beer tappings including specialties like Founder’s KBS and hard to find beers from your favorite local breweries, too.

There’s lots more than just the basics outlined here, but you’ll have to check the calendar out for yourself to see. There are beer and music events, a Brewer’s Olympics, and even a beer school tossed in for good measure. Check out the events listed here, and head over to PittsburghCraftBeerWeek.com to see the events calendar and up to the minute updates on your favorite events. Get ready, it’s gonna be a fun week. Rivertowne will once again be hosting the Meet the Brewers of Craft Beer Week for 2015 on Sunday, April 19th from 6-10 PM at their North Shore location. Last year’s event was a resounding success, bringing together both brewers and craft beer fans under one roof for a night of conversation and great beer. Not only will there be a host of brewers on hand but Rivertowne will be featuring a Pittsburgh Brewery Tap Takeover featuring a beer from as many local breweries as possible. There may be a collaboration or two in the mix,but whatever shows up you should expect it to be great and local. What better way to kick off PCBW 2015 than by meeting the brewers and enjoying a few local beers. 6pm-10pm

GO CRAFT, GO LOCAL a conversion guide for the fledgling craft beer drinker

We all like to stay in our comfort zones. It’s natural to stick to what we know, what we like, what feels homey. But what fun would life be if we always played it safe? If you’re reading this, you’ve either made the jump to craft beer or standing above the rabbit hole, looking down, contemplating. Maybe you know someone who’s “beer-curious” and just needs a little push. So many choices! So many beers! Where on earth do I start? Fear not – you just need to know what you like and be willing to take it a step further. Let’s take a look at where to dip your toe into locally made craft beer.

FULL PINT BREWING BEER DINNER WOODEN NICKEL

Full Pint Brewing pairs their beers with a special menu from The Wooden Nickel 7pm-9pm

If you know you like Blue Moon

This is a witbier, a Belgian-style wheat ale spiced with coriander and orange peel. Light, refreshing, with a citrusy twist, witbier can be served with or without a citrus garnish. Try Rivertowne’s Grateful White, easily found in most retailers by the can, with a cool label illustration. Or East End’s Monkey Boy, a German-style wheat with flavors of banana and clove. More adventurous palates should check out Draai Laag’s Gouden Brugge, a strong golden ale made with lemon zest.

If you know you like Yuengling

This is amber lager has become a classic, a happy alternative to the multinational, corporate suds that shall remain nameless. If you’re looking for something different that has a flavor that’s clean, not too hoppy, and crushable at a picnic or ballgame, Penn Pilsner from Penn Brewery always satisfies. A little more malty with some bready flavors, Church Brew Works’ Pious Monk Dunkel has won awards on the national stage. And Rock Bottom Brewing’s Kolsch, while technically not a lager, gives a crisp little hop *snap* without killing your tongue with bitterness.

BOARDSHORTS; BREWS WITH GREEN FLASH & ALPINE BEER COMPANY THE LIBRARY PUB

We’re bringing the beach to Southside with our friends at the Library Pub - Join Green Flash & Alpine Beer Company as we tap our favorites from San Diego. We’ll have the classic Green Flash brews including West Coast IPA alongside the new Mosaic Session IPA. Alpine Beer Company will be tapping their cult favorites like Hoppy Birthday, Duet & the ever elusive Nelson IPA. 5pm-9pm

This brown ale has been many a beer fan’s introduction to the world of ales, packing more body and flavor than most lagers but milder than a stout or IPA. Give East End’s Fat Gary Nut Brown Ale a go, with its toasty, nutty notes in a deceptively small package (only 3.6% alcohol by volume!). Full Pint’s Little Brown delivers caramel flavors and a little curl of smoke in the finish. And Hitchhiker’s Tumbleweed Oatmeal Brown is creamy, full-bodied, and worth seeking out.

If you know you like Guinness If you like the dark, roasted, coffee-like flavors of Guinness – congratulations! You’ve made it palate-wise, but we’ll point you in the direction of some good local kin. East End’s Black Strap Stout is even darker & roastier, made with blackstrap molasses. Coffee porters take the flavors to a new level, with great examples in Hop Farm’s Fresh Pot o’ Porter and Grist House’s Double Vice. And Spoonwood packs the coffee into a lighter amber ale with Cold Drip City.

If you THINK you don’t like beer No judgments here – our hunch is that you just haven’t met the right one yet. Beer can have such a broad range of flavors, you might just find a match you never knew existed. Rivertowne’s Hala Kahiki Pineapple Beer is a fruity summer go-to, made with fresh pineapple juice. Brewed with honey and ginger, Roundabout’s Ginga Wheat will cool you off. Milkman’s Peppermint Porter delivers strong notes of peppermint in a beer reminiscent of an Andes mint. And The Brew Gentlemen offer a rotating series of small batch beers brewed with unusual ingredients (cucumber, anyone?), definitely worth a try. We’re just scratching the surface here, but every journey starts with a single step, right? And that’s just Allegheny County – there are some amazing beers being brewed in our neighboring environs as well, by the likes of Helltown, All Saints, Four Seasons, and more. So whether you’re taking the leap yourself or coaxing a loved one into the pool, Pittsburgh’s breweries have something for everyone! By: Nathan Stimmell

BREWS FOR BRASS (A PITTONKATONK FUNDRAISER) ROCK BOTTOM BREWERY

Our good friend Pandemic is hosting the second annual Pittonkatonk, a free-to-thepeople, family friendly May Day Potluck BBQ and Brass Music Festival at the Vietnam Veterans Pavilion in Schenley Park, and he needs our help to make sure this event stays truly free and open! Pittonkatonk was created out of the ethos that great times and great memories shouldn’t require you to pay a cover charge or buy concessions. The best times come from a community of friends and neighbors coming together to enjoy life, music, and each others’ company. Think of a huge family reunion or a neighborhood block party, and you’ll have an idea of the spirit at the heart of Pittonkatonk. Come as you are, bring your family (kids are welcome and encouraged to attend) and as many friends as you know, stay as long as you like, bring a dish to share, and dance like crazy to fantastic live music from over 100 performers, both local and national. We’d like to support this undertaking, and so we are holding an all-you-can-eat pierogie party on April 22nd to raise funds to support it. For $10 per person, you get not only pierogie, but also kielbasa, sauerkraut and

our Brewmaster is going to make delicious from-scratch haluski for your enjoyment. We’ll also have a ton of sweet raffle prizes for you to win, and a 50/50. All proceeds will go toward giving this great city of ours one heck of a musical family reunion. Don’t miss it and come hungry!

a history of covering local beer

he year is 2010.The Social Network was in theatres, Breaking Bad started its third season, and Cee Lo’s F___ You was a top song. More important than all three of these combined was the launch of what would become the go-to source of local beer news in Pittsburgh: CraftPittsburgh Magazine. Since 2010 CraftPittsburgh has been a full-color magazine-style publication that can without doubt claim itself as the foremost authority on the Western Pennsylvania craft beer scene.

More content per issue and two more issues each year means more content for you, and more coverage for the amazing city of Pittsburgh and the businesses in it.

In The Beginning… CraftPittsburgh Magazine was originally started by Timothy Russell, the future founder and distiller at Allegheny Distilling, or as you should know them, Maggie’s Farm Rum. Tim started the magazine as a way to shine a light on craft beer in Pittsburgh, something that was truly starting to bloom in 2010. The magazine was founded by a craft beer drinker for craft beer drinkers. Not so much a solely industry or consumer-focused publication, CraftPittsburgh drew readers from head brewers to the occasional bar patron with articles on new beer releases, beer events, interviews, and even recipes for cooking with beer and beer reviews.

Currently, each issue of CraftPittsburgh Magazine runs 10,000 issues and is distributed around southwestern PA. So who reads CraftPittsburgh? As we mentioned above, the content included is a mix of industryspecific information as well as great content for craft beer fans at any level. Whether you’re a home brewer or someone who just loves the newest beers to come out, CraftPittsburgh has you covered.

Originally, CraftPittsburgh was a quarterly publication, which means only four issues were released each year. This was great, but as the craft beer scene in Pittsburgh has grown, the need for more coverage has in turn grown with it. As Maggie’s Farm Rum grew in popularity,Tim’s time to devote to upping the publication of CraftPittsburgh grew less and less. To grow the magazine Tim decided to transfer the magazine to his long-time graphic designer Rob Soltis. Rob took the helm as editor and designer and since taking over has added twelve pages per issue as well as increasing publication to six times per year.

CraftPittsburgh Today As we mentioned, CraftPittsburgh covers the craft beer scene in and around Pittsburgh, but what does that mean? For starters, when new breweries start up, they get the coverage they deserve while keeping the magazine fair and entertaining to read.

So is CraftPittsburgh only for the hardcore craft beer nerds? Not at all, actually. Sure, there’s tons of detailed tasting notes and information on the brewing capacity of new breweries, but there’s also new beer releases, interviews with big names in Pittsburgh craft beer, and even a section on beer styles, detailing a style each month so you know what you’re drinking. From food to beer to the people that make it all happen, CraftPittsburgh Magazine is 5 years old and only just scratching the surface of all the great beer we’ve got in our own back yard. Best of all, CraftPittsburgh is a free magazine that’s available in your favorite bars, distributors, and restaurants throughout the city. By Brian Meyer Founder PghCraftBeers.com

Caliente Pizza & Draft House raises the bar during PCBW By Jason Cercone Founder - Pittsburgh Craft Beer Network

P

ittsburgh Craft Beer Week is undoubtedly the best time of year for craft beer celebration in our city. Novice and experienced enthusiasts alike can utilize this 10-day event to discover everything Pittsburgh has to offer in regards to craft beer and, at the same time, get to know other enthusiasts as well. In addition, local bars and breweries can stamp their footprint in Pittsburgh’s craft beer landscape and make a name for themselves that will carry them through the entire year and beyond. No bar better exemplifies that latter point than Caliente Pizza & Draft House. Since arriving on the scene, Caliente has used PCBW as a grand stage to showcase what they’re all about and spotlight their tireless commitment to providing the best craft beer selection and best pizza in Pittsburgh.

#PCBW | 2015

“Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week 2013 was our coming out party,” Nick Bogacz, Caliente owner, said. “We did everything we could to make the most of the week and people took notice that we had arrived.”

24

In 2014, Caliente took things to another level and raised the bar incredibly high with their efforts during Craft Beer Week. Not only did they feature unique events every day of the 10-day craft beer celebration, they did things never-before seen. For example, the first Saturday featured an event where you could challenge a brewery rep to their favorite video game and, if you won, they’d buy you a beer. This concept proved incredibly popular and kept the Bloomfield location filled most of the day. Later that same day, they tapped a rare barrel of Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout...and kicked it in 17 minutes!

Caliente’s dedication to craft beer excellence runs 365 days a year, but their uncanny ability to maximize Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week is an enormous win for any craft beer enthusiast. A trip to an event at the original Bloomfield location, or their new location in Hampton Township, is guaranteed to deliver and exceed your wildest expectations. Despite the monumental success Caliente experienced in 2014, they’re looking to step things up even higher this year. “We are definitely looking to take it up a notch or two,” Nick promised. Another entity becoming synonymous with Craft Beer Week are the collaboration beers. They represent the cohesiveness our craft beer community lives by and, through a vast combination of skill sets and brewing philosophies, provide us with a solid lineup of beer to drink during our favorite 10 days of the year. And not only will you find all the collaborations on tap at Caliente, you’ll find the one they had a hand in brewing, too. This year, the crew at Caliente teamed up with East End Brewing to produce a collaboration that will be available exclusively at both their locations in Bloomfield and Hampton Township. The beer is a double IPA known as East Caliende Hop Slice and was brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops. After knockout, 22 pounds of lemon drop hops were added to the whirlpool. This collaboration beer marks Caliente’s second partnership with a local brewery for an exclusive PCBW offering. Last year, they teamed up with Church Brew Works head brewer Matt Moniger to create a Belgian Double IPA known as Hop Confession. This past August, Matt joined the

Caliente team full-time and can be seen behind the bar at both locations. Matt played a major role in this year’s project, as did East End Brewing owner Scott Smith and head brewer Brendan Benson.

East Caliende Hop Slice can be found exclusively at East End Brewing and both Caliente locations. With a number of fun and unique interactive events, tap takeovers, and rare beer offerings already scheduled, Caliente will once again be a destination you want to frequent during Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week 2015. Be sure to check the PCBW website for all the happenings going down at both Caliente Pizza & Draft House locations. “We have upcoming projects with other local breweries that will be released in 2015,” Nick stated. “We strive to push the envelope during Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week and all year long as well. The best way for us to keep doing that is to collaborate with our great local breweries.”

Wilson McGinley: providing beer to the ‘Burgh since 1949 By Brian Meyer Founder PghCraftBeers.com

P

Trappist Brewery, Terrapin Beer Co., and Uinta Brewing Co. They also carry beverages from Leinenkugel’s Brewing Co., Blue Spike Beverages, and Elysian Brewing Co.

Originally founded by Fritz Wilson and Jack McGinley, the first iteration of the beer wholesaler called the Terminal building in the South Side home until 1979 when they moved to their current home in Lawrenceville. Just like Pittsburgh’s beer industry, Wilson McGinley is growing by leaps and bounds, which means in the fall of this year they’ll make the third move in the company’s history to a larger and all-new office space and warehouse just down the street from their current home in Lawrenceville.

Wholesalers work with the breweries to get their beer within your reach, and then deliver it out to venues around the city so you can have your craft beer fix.

ittsburgh There’s something to be said about having experience. Experience gives you skill, knowledge, and a feel for the industry that just can’t be matched. This is the perfect way to describe Wilson McGinley Wholesale. Wilson McGinley has been providing beer to Pittsburgh since 1949, which means they have 66 years of experience in providing beers from around the country and world to us thirsty Pittsburghers.

#PCBW | 2015

Today, Wilson McGinley has partnered with 37 different suppliers, including 19 American craft beer suppliers alone. While Wilson McGinley might get beer from far and wide, they love to focus on all things local. This means distributing beer from local breweries like Fat Heads Brewery, Full Pint Brewing Co., Rivertowne Brewing Co., and Lavery Brewing Co.

26

While local is great, there’s some amazing beer all around the country, too. Wilson McGinley works with national breweries like Ballast Point Brewing Co., Clown Shoes Brewing Co., Coronado Brewing Co., Crispin Ciders, Dark Horse Brewing Co., Finch’s Beer Co., Founder’s Brewing., Lost Abbey, Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery, Evil Genius Beer Co., Port Brewing Co., Hop Freshener, Shipyard Brewing Co., Spencer

So what exactly is a beer wholesaler? Well, in short a wholesaler is the go-between that gets beer from your favorite breweries to the bars and beer distributors you love. This means that without the hard work and experience of wholesalers like Wilson McGinley, those beers from the other side of the state as well as the other side of the country would stay where they are, far away from you.

A quality beer wholesaler makes sure the beer you drink is as fresh as it possibly can be, and that it’s delivered as it should be. Today, Wilson McGinley is still run by a Wilson and a McGinley with Christopher Wilson serving as the President and John McGinley and Ryan Wilson both serving as Vice Presidents. Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week is lucky enough to have one of Wilson McGinley’s sales managers, James Mooney, serving on our board. Jim along with the rest of the board have helped to make this Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week the best one yet Thanks to Wilson McGinley and PCBW’s other generous sponsors, there are more than 300 events spread out over the ten days of PCBW 2015. Check out WilsonMcGinley.com for more on the company, and PittsburghCraftBeerWeek.com to see all of their events as well as countless others. Follow @BurghBrewNews on Twitter to get the lowdown on all the newest beer and best events during PCBW as well as all year.

Over the past several years, the popularity of craft beer has risen to dizzying heights thanks to consumer’s demand for an alternative to massproduced beers. For many people, including myself, Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week represents a time to network, learn, and grow within this community. When I first moved to Pittsburgh in 2002, my knowledge of craft beer was slim to none. But I took advantage of the large variety of options at my disposal and it allowed me to discover new beers and expand my horizons. Before I knew it, craft beer was my beer of choice. Since Craft Beer Week hit the scene in 2012, I’ve made it a priority to utilize these 10 days to better acquaint myself with everything Pittsburgh has to offer. I’ve learned a lot, made new friends, and discovered first-hand the dedication our community has to growing the craft beer landscape. I’ve watched this event evolve consistently since its inception and each year offers something new and exciting for each of us to get excited about. As the 2015 version of Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week unfolds, I encourage you to take in your surroundings and discover for yourself that you’re part of something truly special. It’s not just great beer. It’s an incredible culture comprised of incredible people, coming together to celebrate the world’s greatest adult beverage...with said beverage in hand. That’s the definition of camaraderie. That’s what Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week is all about.

women in BREWING By Brian Meyer, founder CraftBeerAcademy.com

Photo by Stephanie Pariano, Pariano Photography & Design - parianophotographycom

T

here was a time when brewing was considered to be the sole task of women. It was these brewsters that made the beer the world drank. In fact, you can trace the impact women have had on brewing all the way back 4,000 years to Mesopotamia and ancient Sumer. The Sumerians had a goddess of beer named Ninkasi that was prayed to. In short, women in brewing historically have been a pretty big deal. So why are most brewery owners and brewmasters of the male variety? Even up to the 18th century women were the primary brewers and while there were monks throughout the world brewing their own beer, this was mostly due to the total lack of women at the monastery. It wasn’t until the late 18th century that brewing by women started to decline in favor of more male brewers. As the idea of drinking became more for fun than for need of a clean drink (which water definitely was not), the industry started to shift towards men. This continued throughout the 19th century, leaving the beer industry predominantly male. With the craft beer revolution happening today however, women are finally starting to retake their rightful place with beer. More and more women are making their way into the brewing world, and while it is still mostly a guys game, there are some women making some pretty big waves and some even better beer. I got the chance to talk with Pittsburgh’s own Meg Evans, a brewer currently at Rock Bottom Brewery, about how she got started and what she thinks about women in craft beer. 1.) Name, brewery, length of time there? Meg Evans - Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery - 10 Months (In the industry since 2010) 2.) Previous Breweries? Rivertowne Brewery - 2012-2014 Southern Tier Brewing Company - 2010-2012

#PCBW | 2015

3.) What got you started in the brewing business? Homebrewing - A friend introduced me to a local (Dunkirk, NY) home brew club right before I turned 21 and I was hooked. I loved the culture I saw. It was a room full of people sharing beer, ideas, stories, food, etc.. I could tell it was different. Everyone seemed so open about teaching what they knew and never made me feel silly for asking a question I now know was pretty silly. It was also the place I brewed my first home brew. **Thanks, Frank!

30

4.) Did you have a role model or favorite female brewer that made you want to brew? Honestly, no. Watching the beer industry move and grow has been very inspiring. I’m always brainstorming ideas to add to my arsenal. There are many inspiring women out there who are paving the way not solely as women, but as great brewers. A few that come to mind are Lauren Salazar (New Belgium), Tonya Cornett (10 Barrel), Teri Fahrendorf (Pink Boots Society), and Megan Parisi (Wormtown Brewery).Their achievements have created a sense of normalcy for women in brewing.

5.) Why do you think there aren’t more women in brewing? Like many industries that began in our country as being male dominated, brewing wasn’t any different. I want to add that brewing as a career choice is not at the top of a college recruiter’s list either. I wasn’t aware that I could do this for a living until I was opened up to home brewing. That seems to be a winning combination as to why. I won’t lie and say that it’s an easy job. It’s demanding, it’s physical, and it can be frustrating. Conversely, it’s rewarding, it’s a fun industry, and it’s always exciting in one way or another. It demands a level of passion that most industries don’t and when you love it, you really love it. Sometimes that level of involvement can be intimidating. But if you’re up for the challenge, then do it to it! 6.) What can women do to get more involved with brewing? As more people are going the way of education, that is my first recommendation. It’ll put you ahead over anyone without.A basic background in biology or chemistry can give you a leg up. Certificated programs through Siebel Institute and American Brewer’s Guild will give you the tools you need to get your foot in the door. Accredited programs from UC Davis and Oregon State University offer degrees in Food Science with a concentration in Fermentation Science. Each of these will prepare you to accept a role in a brew house or lab. These are just a few options. I have also caught wind of other colleges offering a class or two that touch on brewing science. If you have hopes to do other jobs in the beer industry outside of brewing, the Cicerone Organization offers courses that give you a basic background in the brewing process, history of brewing, tasting beer, and proper draught management. They offer three levels - Certified Beer server, Certified Cicerone, and Master Cicerone. It’s a great program to look into if you have interest in beer sales, beertending, or beer bar management. The BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) provides an abundance of information on beer styles. Becoming a beer judge is a great way to learn styles, and get involved in beer festivals that offer judging (IE: Great American Beer Fest). Lastly, there are hundreds of great books that’ll give you the tools to teach yourself quite a bit.You can see what the brewer’s association recommends at their website. 7.) Are there organizations or groups for women brewers? Pink Boots Society is an all female beer professional organization. Their mission is to empower women beer professionals, and to advance their careers in the Beer Industry through Education. You can visit their site for more information, check out the scholarships they are currently offering, or to sign up for a membership. PinkBootsSociety.org 8.) What advice would you leave a woman that wants to get started in the beer industry and brewing? Work hard and be different. This industry is changing, and it’s no longer a “boys only” club. If you are tenacious enough, you can make anything happen.

A FACE BEHIND THE BEER By Kevin Kapraly The best part about craft beer is the unique styles, ingredients and creativity that come with the industry. After that, I enjoy the ever-expanding populace that imbibes in craft beer and the knowledge and discussion that entertains me while I’m consuming those beverages. Often times though, one drinks a craft beer without knowing much about the guy or lady that brewed it. My favorite part about Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week is the chance to meet the person who brewed the beer I’m currently enjoying. Although employees of the Pittsburgh craft beer industry are usually stressed and have little free time during PCBW, many brewers make it a point to attend various events throughout the city. This offers an excellent opportunity to pick their brains, learn about them personally and potentially discuss their brewing philosophies. I always enjoy hearing what motivates brewers, what styles they like best and what they find most rewarding about working in the industry.

Overall, Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week is a fantastic experience with events all day and night everyday for ten days. My favorite part is meeting the brewers and talking to them, of which there are ample opportunities at tap takeovers, meet and greet events, collaboration celebrations and food and beer pairings. I enjoy putting a face behind the beer and meeting the person that took the time to brew the delicious beverages I find enjoyable in and around Pittsburgh.

Last year, my favorite event was a local taptakeover at the Rivertowne North Shore location. The tap list consisted of beers exclusively from the Pittsburgh region. Brewers or representatives from each brewery were there: chatting with each other, with families, friends, and local craft beer enthusiasts. Although I have not seen the Rivertowne North Shore Pittsburgh Tap Takeover and Brewer Meet & Greet listed for this year, there are many other opportunities during the week to meet the brewers and discuss their beers with them.
