On a cold winter night in 1996, a lone man built an igloo on top of a Swiss mountain. His name was Adrian Gunter, and he had no idea that one simple shelter made of snow would lead to the most exciting business venture of his life. When he built that firstigloo, his only goal was to be the first one on the mountain in the morning so he could snowboard on the freshly fallen snow and soak in the ambiance. He got exactly what he wanted and, soon enough, a few of his friends began building their own igloos there with him. It wasn't long before other snowboarders, skiers, and tourists were asking if they could sleep in one of the igloos for the night. Passing interest grew into high demand over the next few years, and Iglu-Dorf was born. Today, Iglu-Dorf is a hugely successful luxury igloo rental service, and it's all thanks to that fateful night Adrian spent overlooking the Swiss mountains. Igloos have come to be associated with the Inuit people and were more widely used among the Central Arctic region of Canada, as well as the Thule area of Greenland. Not all Inuits built igloos, however. Some constructed their homes out of bones and hide from whales, using snow as added insulation. And if you're picturing the igloos you've seen in history books or cartoons, you might want to raise your expectations. When Adrian and his crew say 'luxury,' they mean it.
