Lab fee: $10 GOMS is an environment where the creative and technical exchange of the class is as vibrant and important as that with your instructor. You choose what project(s) you want to work on. The only requirement, besides having basic metals skills, is the openness to learn as much from the other students’ work as your own. The $10 lab fee is due at the first class.

Tuesdays, 6:00-9:00pm May 15-May 29 I 3 session/9 hrs Tuition: $125/$115*. Materials fee: $30

This 3-day class will teach a variety of metalsmithing skills while incorporating the importance of design and function. You will each leave with the knowledge to make a customizable knife from blade to handle, and how to etch a pattern into the blade. Kabir will supply 3 to 4 differently shaped templates for blades so you can choose the shape that best fits your needs.

SANDRA SEYMOUR

This short 3-session class will help you build confidence and teach you ways to vastly speed up your work. Topics to include pick soldering, multiple solderings, as well as un-soldering and repairs. Basic silver soldering experience required.

PENDANT DESIGN: BEYOND THE BEZEL SANDRA SEYMOUR Thursdays, 6:00-9:00pm July 12-August 2 I 4 sessions/12 hrs Tuition: $165/$155*. Materials fee: $10 Do you have a stone you love, an enamel piece that turned out well, or even a found object that charms or intrigues you? You’d like to put it in a piece of jewelry and show it to the world! But let’s not stop at the bezel. Let’s work together to design and build a pendant that’s uniquely expressive of your object and of yourself. Basic silver soldering experience required.

Scholarships are available for all classes, workshops and camps.

Natural or marbled, integrate a venerated art form with today’s top organizational tool. Another use for a cork cover is for a tool roll.

DRESSMAKING FOR REAL PEOPLE KATHLEEN PETERS

DESIGN, LAYOUT AND COLOR— AN EXPLORATION OF CREATING

This two-day workshop is about the design, layout, and use of color, imagery, and materials in your artwork. A craftsman making jewelry, Bob is always asking the questions: where do I put the pearls or stones? How do I assemble or layout my design before I start the execution of my idea? Here, he will prompt you to investigate how your ideas and designs evolve into form. Working with paper, scissors, postcards, glue, etc. you will be challenged to think about your ideas, composition, and basic concepts of what beauty, style, taste, and design are. Open to artists and crafts people working in all media.

GINGER ARMSTRONG began studying Japanese

METAL: MOBILES, WIND CHIMES, ANYTHING THAT MOVES FOR AGES 11-13

LOUISA BERKY,

Calligraphy in Vermont in the 1990’s with an artist from Hokkaido in northern Japan, Aya Itagaki. Knowing she wanted to study further she moved to Yokohama and studied with Kazuko Makino. Moving to the countryside of Japan she found her final teacher, Ooba Sensei who taught in the Chinese tradition of Toseu Calligraphy giving Ginger a deeper understanding of this art as an expression of spirit and not just form. Ooba Sensei also stressed the origins of calligraphy as coming from stone carving, thus instilling great strength and movement in each concept written. Ginger’s heart continues to guide her in finding new ways to express the spirit of these forms. a native of Colorado, ventured to the east coast for college to attend Williams College in Williamstown, MA. During her senior year, she took a metal sculpture class where I was introduced to welding and working in metal. That class sparked my curiosity with metal and sculpture. Upon graduation from Williams, I moved back to Colorado and sought out other opportunities to play with metal, which lead me to an introduction to jewelry class. I was immediately hooked and continued to expand my jewelry education each year by taking a wide variety of jewelry classes. After spending 5 years learning and working at a local jewelry school in Denver, CO, I moved with my partner to New Hampshire. Once in New Hampshire, I was lucky enough to work at Designer Gold in Hanover, NH where I expanded my knowledge of jewelry production and gained valuable insight about running a local jewelry business. I now run my own business, Louisa B Designs, from my home studio in New Hampshire.

MARIA GROSS

began to learn how to be a metalsmith at CraftStudies in the Hanover League of NH Craftsmen during the late 1990’s. The learning curve has come from attending many classes at this League’s Metal Studio, taking many workshops in New England, constantly practicing at my own bench, learning from fellow students and teaching both kids and adults in summer camps and workshops (all held at CraftStudies.) I really enjoy working in silver, soft steel wire, and ICE resin inlays and castings; I opt for mixing metals, cold joining techniques, creating unusual chains and chain maille and look forward to use the unusual found object.

LILI HANFT

has, for as long as she can remember, dabbled in all sorts of crafts: knitting, crocheting, sewing, weaving, and felting, as well as drawing and painting. She especially loves needle felting because it combines the detail and precision of drawing with the medium of textiles. When not needle felting delicate designs on garments she likes to spend time reading, walking in nature, and cooking.

learned basket weaving 20 years ago in order to teach this traditional craft form to children at the Stoddard Elementary School in western New Hampshire. He made his first basket as part of a course at the Audubon Society where, he says, “the worst student in the class.” He kept at it, however, and over time refined his craft to create baskets that beautifully wed functionality and individual style. Ray’s baskets draw from traditional techniques, but are unique in the way he incorporates a beautiful hardwood base inside the basket and runners on the bottom.
