DEB FAIRCHILD Tuesday-Friday. 9:00am-2:30pm. July 16-19. 4 sessions/ 22 hrs Tuition: $270/$260*. Materials Fee: $20 In this 4-day session, we will learn how to demonstrate the connections that lead to discovery and understanding and how to integrate art and craft activities effectively (and seamlessly) into our lesson planning. Specific hands-on activities may relate to fractals, tessellations, surfaces, tensegrity, shapes, balance, kinetics, light, color, or optics based on the interests of the participants. We will engage in both hand-on activities as well as development of sample lesson plans.
BASKET MAKING RAY LAGASSE Monday, 9:00-4:00pm. July 15 1 session/7 hrs Tuition: $155/$150*. Materials included In this one-day workshop you can choose to make a pack basket, laundry basket, a market basket, wool-gathering basket, double-pie basket or a tote. The baskets will be woven using reed with a hardwood base, rails, and rim. Full descriptions will be emailed the week before the workshop. Materials are included in the tuition. METALS 101: SCULPTURE; FROM “INORGANIC” TO “ORGANIC” KERSTIN NICHOLS Thursday-Friday, 9am-noon July 18-19. 2 sessions/12 hrs Tuition: $155/$145*. Estimated materials fee, payable to instructor: $20 While making a flowering branch from copper sheet and wire you will learn the basics of transforming flat metal and wire into complex 3 dimensional forms. The basic metalsmithing processes of “forming”, “soldering” and “finishing” will all be covered.

EFFECTIVE CERAMIC STUDIO MANAGEMENT DEB CHURCHILL Monday-Friday, 1:00-4:00pm July 15-19. 5 sessions/15 hrs Tuition: $220/$210*. Materials fee: none The ceramics studio can be a place of terrific creativity, but studio maintenance can be quite daunting. This class will focus on clay studio management and maintenance. We will discuss such topics as clay waste and recycling, glaze safety, general kiln upkeep, and how to design a studio for optimal flow. While this class is designed with teachers in mind, those setting up a home studio will also find it useful.

Tuition: $325/$315* Join this class to learn important elements of functional pottery in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Instruction will build on each student’s skill level and interests, with demonstrations on throwing, and forming of handles, rims, and feet. We will go over slab construction techniques according to student interest. You will come away with glazed finished pieces, new skills, and a better sense for weight, shape and volume. For those interested, the instructor will help students develop a project for the class.

Possibilities are endless for new ways to express yourself as you explore combining techniques and making closed forms, lidded vessels, vases and planters, bird feeders—whatever you fancy. The syllabus is open for input from you. Coiling and slab-built techniques will be demonstrated along with many modes of surface treatment and final glazing approaches. Dig into the clay and (re) discover the joys of working with this magical medium.

Tuition $250/$240* Materials fee: TBD Fire your pottery in the NH Potters’ Guild’s cross/downdraft onechamber kiln under the direction of Andy Hampton. On April 4, Andy will present work he has fired in this and other wood fire kilns, discuss shapes, sizes and quantities and glazes available for this firing. Participation in the workshop requires helping load the kiln beginning at 9am on the Friday, May 17 and working one or more six-hour firing shift(s) until Sunday evening. Camping is a definite option! On Saturday, May 25 the kiln will be opened to reveal the magic of a wood fire.

DEB FAIRCHILD June 24-28 1:00-4:00pm Sleds, diamonds, barn doors, boxes, deltas, or maybe dragons!!!! In this workshop, we’ll explore the math and science that allow us to build kites that fly. We’ll consider construction factors, flight mechanics and atmospheric conditions. During the week, you’ll be able to build two or three different kite designs. And, of course, we’ll reserve a quality time for field tests and competition.

ANNIE BALAGUR August 12-16 1:00-4:00pm This ancient craft comes from many cultural traditions including Egypt, Asia and Scandinavia. It uses everyday objects such as a deck of cards and a belt. We will be ourselves to our weaving using a belt around the waist to hold the tension of the weaving. These simple tools create a endless array of beautiful patterned bands used for bag handles, guitar straps, jewelry, bookmarks, decorative trim, or anything else you can imagine.

BEGINNER TO INTERMEDIATE WORKSHOPS NO METALWORKING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
TOOLS FOR JEWELERS RUSSELL EDWARD Saturday, 10:00am-4:00pm. April 13. 1 session/6 hrs Tuition: $100/$95*. Materials fee: $10 If you are looking to save money on some of your tools for making jewelry, this class will help. You will learn to anneal, harden and temper steel items and shape them for your needs. The differences between torches will be covered. A trip through the local hardware store to use different items as tools. There will also be a listing of regular jewelry suppliers and ones that are more familiar to electronics or model train hobbyists.
INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED WORKSHOPS METALWORKING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
RECYCLING YOUR METAL JOY RASKIN Saturday, 10:00am-5:00pm. April 6. 1 session/7 hrs Tuition: $105/$100*. Lab fee: $5 Metalsmithing experience required. In this workshop, you will melt down old silver or gold into ingots and roll it into wire or sheet. Once rolled out you will make a new bracelet or ring! You will use a torch to melt your metal and the rolling mill to make it into square wire or sheet. For round wire you will use a drawplate. This studio has all the tools, just bring your silver & gold scrap.
CLASPS & CLOSURES JOY RASKIN Sunday, 10:00am-4:00pm. April 7. 1 session/6 hrs Tuition: $100/$95*. Estimated materials fee, payable to instructor: $10-$50 Basic metalsmithing, soldering or jewelry skills are required, intermediate level. This workshop covers the basics of box clasp, barrel clasp, hinged clasps, lentil clasps, doorknocker clasp, safety catch, and toggles. How to attach them to chains, a refresher on riveting, and more will also be covered. A quick demonstration on commercial and handmade pinback findings, will be shown. Joy will provide a limited amount of sterling tubing, sheet metal, and wire.
CLOISONNÉ ENAMELING PAULINE WARG Saturday, 9:30am-5:00pm. June 22. 1 session/7.5 hrs Tuition: $180/$175*. Materials fee: $25 Cloisonne’ enameling consists of fine wires applied to a piece of pure silver sheet to create a design. The “cells” are then gradually filled with glass enamel and fired in a kiln, until they are level with the tops of the wires. The basics of enameling, health, safety, wet packing the enamels and finishing will all be covered.
NATIVE AMERICAN INSPIRED UTILITY KNIFE SKIP CADY Friday-Sunday, 9:30am-5:00pm. July 5-7. 3 sessions/22.5 hrs Tuition: $270/$260*. Materials fee, payable to instructor: $30 This 3-day class will teach a variety of metalsmithing skills while incorporating the importance of design and function. You will leave with the knowledge to make a customizable knife from blade to handle, and how to etch a pattern into the blade. Skip will supply 3 to 4 differently shaped templates for blades so you can choose which shape best fits your needs. No metalsmithing experience required.

CREATING STONE SETTINGS: BASKETS AND BEZEL BLOCKS JEFF GEORGANTES Saturday & Sunday, 10:00am-5:00pm. May 4 & 5. 2 sessions/14 hrs Tuition: $300/$295*. Materials fee, payable to the instructor: $30 Basic metalworking and soldering experience required. Learn to make your own basket settings and how to use bezel blocks. First, you’ll learn core principles of stone setting, then Jeff will show some tricks to make round basket settings. From there, you’ll learn how to solder these settings together and also how a precision arc welder can simplify the process. Bezel blocks make the process of making a tapered tube setting be super easy! Jeff will also show how the blocks can be used to make a prong setting.

With a soldering torch and rolling mill you can create a mock inlay; solder inlay to create a dot effect or to add another color: a wood grain pattern and much more! Materials used are 16g. and 14g. sheet and 14g to 20g. wire in copper, brass, bronze, nickel, silver and any gold if available. Joy will have a small supply of assorted sheet metal and wire for purchase.
SOLDERING 101 JOY RASKIN Sunday, 10:00am-4:00pm August 18. 1 session/6 hrs Tuition: $100/$95*. Estimated materials fee, payable to instructor: $5-$15 Learn soldering or improve your soldering skills. Or learn how to set up your own soldering torch and tank. This workshop will cover the basics of setting up a soldering torch and tank, safety issues and a place to solder. Joy will cover all the soldering basics from butt joints to stick soldering. You’ll work on soldering and gain confidence in your soldering skills. This is an ideal workshop for those who have been taking jewelry classes and want to improve soldering as well as those who want to understand soldering.
MINIATURE BOWLS JOY RASKIN Sunday, 10:00am-4:00pm. June 2. 1 session/6 hrs Tuition: $100/$95*. Estimated Materials Fee: $15-$40 Using dapping punches and small mushroom stakes you’ll make miniature bowls out of copper, bronze and even in silver. The bowls will be formed from 2” to 4” 20g. discs, on wooden dapping blocks and then hammered over stakes to make shallow or deep bowls. Bases will be made with sheet metal and wire. If you want to make a sterling bowl, bring 2” or 3” or 4” 20g sterling or Argentium disc or enough silver sheet to make a bowl.
INTRODUCTION TO THE HYDRAULIC PRESS PAULINE WARG Sunday, 9:30am-4:30pm. June 23. 1 session/7 hrs Tuition: $180/$175*. Materials fee: $25 The hydraulic press is a tool that allows a wide variety of forming metal with a great deal less effort than required using only hammers or pitch. Matrix dies, conforming blocks, bending break, impressing, and more will be covered. You will have time to make samples of processes demonstrated. Care and safe use of the press will be discussed.
FORGING WORKSHOP JOY RASKIN Saturday, 10:00am-4:00pm August 17. 1 session/6 hrs Tuition: $100/$95*. Estimated materials fee, payable to instructor: $10-20 Forging is an ancient art of hammering metal to transform the shape and width of wire. Using different hammers, steel blocks and anvil, you will forge 6g to 12g. copper wire into different forms, and make jewelry or utensils or sculpture. You will learn both cold forging and hot forging. This is a noisy class and very physical. Joy will have copper wire for you to purchase.

Tuition: $220/$210* Estimated materials Fee: $60 Learn to replicate detailed images in high quality felt with even thickness and well defined edges. Bring pictures you find inspiring. From these you will be guided to loosely replicate the image in fiber. The image will be needle felted in to a felt canvas and wet felted using methods from Ancient Asia Minor cultures. Through out the creative process color, texture, and material science will be explored. You will make at least one detailed, heirloom quality image.

Materials fee: $10 Learn the ancient Ukrainian Easter egg art of pysanky. Since pagan times, Ukrainians have decorated eggs to welcome spring. In this workshop, you will learn how to divide an egg, use hot beeswax applied with a kistky funnel to draw on the egg over a succession of aniline dyes, and create a beautiful, one of a kind egg.
