Welcome to all our Visitors
Whether from New Zealand or further afield, our Island offers visitors a special experience – a glimpse into a simpler, slower lifestyle, in rhythm with the sea and the tides, attuned to the natural world of bush and beach. In 2002 the very qualities that make this a great place to treasure were recognised in the formation of the Rakiura National Park, comprising 85% of the island’s 1,570 sq. kilometres. We who are fortunate enough to live here value the Island’s special qualities – its clear, clean waters, the lush rainforest, sweeping sands, flora and fauna and the unspoilt natural beauty that are constant in our lives. Whether you have come to enjoy the land and seascapes, view the wildlife, walk, boat, fish, dive, kayak, hunt or just relax, a Stewart Island holiday will be an experience that will draw you back here again and again.

Our Heritage From the 13th century the Island’s rich resources of native flora and birds, seafood and that very special delicacy, the Titi (Sooty Shearwater/ Muttonbird) provided a bountiful harvest for Māori. Early in the 19th century explorers, sealers, missionaries, miners and settlers from all corners of the world made their mark on the Island. Marriage with local Māori women created strong family and cultural links to Rakiura. Sawmillers, boat builders and fishermen followed. The Island’s population grew, stabilised and settled, mainly around the edges of Paterson Inlet and the heads of Halfmoon and Horseshoe Bays, and in short-lived ventures at Port William, Port Pegasus and Māori Beach. In the 1920s new arrivals came from Norway as part of the Rosshavet whaling enterprise. Those who chose to stay permanently added another thread to the interesting tapestry of nationalities living on Stewart Island. Fishing, aquaculture, tourism and conservation are the main pursuits which now support the Island’s population of 400 people. This affirms the natural attributes of the Island’s qualities which first attracted Māori and Europeans to its shores.

While you’re here...
Walk to Ackers Cottage at Harrolds Bay, the Island’s oldest structure built in 1836, via the whaling relics at Leask Bay and on to the Ackers Point Lighthouse. Explore the remains of the Māori Beach Sawmill and the near-intact log haulers up the hill to the north. 4-5 hours return walk or water taxi options available. Discover the history of missionaries at Wohlers Monument at Ringaringa Point. Experience the rich history of whaling at Whaling Base, in Prices Inlet, a declared archaeological site and New Zealand’s first maritime historic place. Venture over to Mason Bay where the remains of settlement and farming
attempts are visible at the historic Island Hill and Kilbride homesteads. 1-2 days required.

ULVA ISLAND Ulva Island is New Zealand at its most pristine; a place of natural primeval beauty, where the sounds of ancient birdsong can be heard. An open island sanctuary situated in Paterson Inlet, only a seven-minute water taxi ride from Golden Bay, it is a bird watchers and natural history paradise. The Island has wellmaintained tracks providing easy access to diverse birdlife, lush forest and beautiful beaches. The Island is one of the few predator-free sanctuaries in New Zealand. To protect this status, before departing visitors are urged to
thoroughly check all equipment including footwear, to ensure they are not unwittingly transporting stowaways, especially weed seeds and rodents, to the Island. Please respect the wildlife, especially kiwi. Do not approach any wildlife within five metres or disturb them in any way. Getting there: Take a water taxi from Golden Bay, a 10-15 minute walk over the hill, via Ayr Street and Golden Bay Road, from the main village. See the Water Taxi section of this brochure for a selection of operators providing scheduled and customised departures.
Explore the various tracks and beaches at your own leisure. Allow at least 3-4 hours to complete all the tracks. The Ulva Island Trust, who support the crown management of the Island, produce an informative self-guiding booklet which is available from Ulva Island, DOC, and local retailers for a small fee. Take a guided tour with one of the Island’s many experienced guides to learn all the secrets and natural history of the Island. See the Guided Walks and Tours & Activities section of this brochure for operators. For further information, visit www. ulvaisland.org and our website.

Whether you have come to enjoy the land and seascapes, view the wildlife, walk, boat, fish, dive, kayak, hunt or just relax, a Stewart Island holiday will be an experience that will draw you back here again and again.
www.stewartisland.co.nz
Visit Motorau Moana native garden and lookout, a peaceful setting for a picnic or to relax and admire the view (1hr return). Take a trip to Lee Bay, site of our Anchor Chain and the start of the Rakiura National Park (2-3hrs return). Aim for a hole-in-one on our 6-hole golf course atop the breathtaking setting of the Ringaringa cliffs. Clubs can be hired and green fees paid at the Post Office on Elgin Terrace. Check out what's happening on the character-filled Community Notice Board in the centre of town. Watch the changing skies of Rakiura; breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, the magical sight of the Aurora Australis, or the twinkling stars across a clear night sky. Play a game of outdoor bowls on our all-weather green on Ayr Street – suitable for all ages and abilities. Bowling gear can be hired from the Post Office on Elgin Terrace. Explore the rock pools under the wharf or at many of our beaches and find the fascinating creatures that make them their home – great family fun.
