WELCOME
, whether from New Zealand or further afield, Tslower our island offers a special experience – a glimpse into a simpler, lifestyle, in rhythm with the sea and the tides, attuned to the o all our visitors
natural world of bush and beach. in 2002 the very qualities that make this a great place to treasure, were recognised in the formation of the rakiura National Park, comprising 85% of the island’s 1,570 sq. kilometres. We who live here permanently value the island’s special qualities – its clear, clean waters, the lush rainforest, sweeping sands, flora and fauna and the unspoilt natural beauty that are constant in our lives. Whether you have come to enjoy the land and seascapes, view the wildlife, walk, boat, fish, dive, kayak, hunt or just relax, a stewart island holiday will be an experience that will draw you back here again and again.
the stewart island Promotion association is committed to ensuring that visitors to stewart island enjoy their experience. if the service provided by any of the operators advertised in this brochure gives cause for concern, please contact: the secretary, stewart island Promotion association, P.o.Box 90, stewart island 9846. promotion@stewartisland.co.nz While all due care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this publication, the stewart island Promotion association accepts no responsibility for any error, omissions or the offers or details of operator listings. our F
heritage
roM tHe 13tH CeNtury the island’s rich resources of native flora and birds, seafood and that very special delicacy, the titi (sooty shearwater/ Muttonbird ) provided a bountiful harvest for Maori. early in the 19th century explorers, sealers, missionaries, miners and settlers from all corners of the world made their mark on the island. Marriage with local Maori women created strong family and cultural links to rakiura. sawmillers, boat builders and fishermen followed. the island’s population grew, stabilized and settled, mainly around the edges of Paterson inlet and the heads of Halfmoon and Horseshoe Bays, and in short-lived ventures at Port William, Port Pegasus and Maori Beach. in the 1920’s new arrivals came from Norway as part of the rosshavet whaling enterprise. those who chose to stay permanently added another thread to the interesting tapestry of nationalities living on stewart island. today little remains of those wider scattered settlements and the enterprises which fostered their establishments. Fishing, aquaculture, tourism and conservation are the main pursuits which now support the island’s population of 400 people. this affirms the natural attributes of the island’s qualities which first attracted Maori and europeans to its shores.

ULVA ISLAND

U
lva islaND is a bird watcher’s paradise. situated in Paterson inlet this open island sanctuary is a short water taxi trip from Golden Bay. the island has well maintained tracks providing easy access to diverse birdlife, lush forest and beautiful beaches. Managed by the Department of Conservation (DoC), with the support of the ulva island Charitable trust, the island is predator free although a brief re-invasion of Norway rats in 2010 highlights how easily bio-security standards can be breached. Before departing for ulva visitors are urged to thoroughly check all equipment, including footwear, to ensure they are not unwittingly transporting stowaways, particularly weed seeds and rodents, to the island. Please respect the wildlife, especially Kiwi. Do not approach any wildlife within 5 metres or disturb them in any way. an informative self guiding booklet is available from DoC, and local retailers, for independent visitors. Guided trip and tour group options are also available. Contact local operators for details. www.ulvaisland.org
