WHAT DOES TOMORROW HOLD? by Joseph Akinrinola

Do you know what tomorrow holds? You probably know little or nothing about what will happen tomorrow.

As we march into 2021, how much can you trust God for your life and situation? With all the tumult and uncertainty in the world today, what does the future hold for you? This is where your walk with God in the New Year becomes paramount. Well, I may not know what the future holds, but I know Him who holds the future. I discovered through our years of walking with God, we still doubt his capacity. We prefer obeying our five senses to trusting God in the uncertainty.

What does it take to trust God? It means trusting he is in control when the surrounding situations indicate otherwise. In that case, our feelings are inconsequential. God nowhere promised we shall feel his presence, but he assured us his abiding presence. At times walking with and trusting God takes time. Those long waiting times are needed to prove our sincerity. If we trust him long enough, he will manifest on our behalf in a long and fruitful manner.

God didn’t tell Abraham a specific place to go when he called him to leave his family. It took Abraham a three-days’ journey to get to where he must sacrifice Isaac. He could have offered the boy in his backyard, yet God had a specific place in mind. I guess the reason for that long distance to the mountains was to allow Abraham to reconsider his unreasonable decision to kill the promised child.

Most times God seems not to appear until we reach our wit’s end. Our question about tomorrow may be about our health, marriage, children, job, career, and finance. The fear and doubt about the future of our finance is the reason some will not pay their tithe. To them, the entire income is not enough, let alone when you remove a tenth for God. (Proverb 3:5-7)

There are two yardsticks used to determine if you can trust a person. These are his integrity and testimonies about him. Let me run through these determinants to prove you can trust God for the New Year.

Since God is our Creator and Sustainer of everything that existed, he cannot mismanage your little life. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17 NIV). To be certain you are secure; hear God’s word to Abraham. God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. (Hebrews 6: 13-20) God has no greater person other than himself. But note those vows and promises of God didn’t come cheap. It cost Abraham some things. He waited and made sacrifices. You only wait for someone whose words are dependable. And from the little we know about God; his word is trustworthy.

The second assurances of a secured tomorrow are testimonies about God. What testimonies do we have about God? First, God testified about himself in Isaiah 44:6-8. Second, Nebuchadnezzar testified about God in Daniel 3, 4. Third, there is my testimony. According to the Bible, you need two or three people to confirm a matter. Thus, I will add my testimony. This is to confirm the God of the Bible has not changed over the ages.

I almost turned down my first pastoral appointment. This was because that church was crisis-ridden and on the verge of collapse. The worst thing was I received no direction from God, despite the serious time of praying and fasting rather than obeying my leaders. Yet, I have trusted God with my future. Today, I look back to thank God for that experience and what God did during my stay in that church. In fact, one of my best friends now came from the assignment.

I don’t know what fears and expectations you have for the New Year. You will do well to leave the uncertainty to God and act like Peter in his encounter with Jesus. (Luke 5:5) Is it about your health, finance, marriage, career, or education? He will not fail you if you will trust him.

Let me close with this experience during our annual fasting and praying last year. On my way to work, I desired (not a prayer) to have yam and egg to break the fast. While closing for the day, my boss gave me a tuber of yam. That means God granted my desire. As I was thanking God in my spirit, I heard Him say I should give the yam to another pastor on my way home. Though I struggled a while with that voice, yet I obeyed because I knew I heard God correctly.

By 8:00 pm in the night, a call came in from a woman asking my wife to see her the following day. Beloved, my wife returned with six tubers of yam and some money as a gift. He proved He has more than enough if I can trust Him enough.

Therefore, taking an adventure with God in the New Year will open you to an amazing experience that will be better exploited than imagined.
