NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Happy New Year - isn’t it great to start a new year with new hope and fresh ideas. I never run out of ideas, I just run out of time! We look forward to this year as we welcome more new writers and continue to expand our coverage of the magazine. It is not our doing, this is all about God. He has spread this magazine into countries we could not even imagine—over 95 and counting. I stopped making New Year’s Resolutions years ago. Why? I realized I would sit down and work up a list and keep adding to it. It soon became something that was unrealistic and really held no meaning. I asked myself, why do you put these expectations on yourself? I prayed over the decision and stopped feeling the drive to write them just because they are a tradition for many people. If you have a list, I hope you pray over it and enjoy making the list get smaller with your successes. Just keep in mind, it is only a list.

We’ll take a picnic to the park

A new year, an opportunity to clean the slate and start over, to make a fresh start. We’re drawn to make resolutions for the new year, resolutions to improve in many areas of our lives. It’s a time of self-reflection, a serious look at the year we’ve had, and a fresh look at the year ahead. What do we want to keep? What do we want to continue and even improve? What do we want to leave behind or perhaps come to grips with what we’re forced to leave behind due to loss? I pray you have friends and loved ones who are close that will help guide you, but I pray you also know the love and care of the Holt Spirit through Jesus Christ who is your source of strength throughout this new year of fresh beginnings. I pray the poems I chose to share are meaningful to you as you look forward to this new year ahead. Blessings, John.

Beyond Today

Friends

Lord, help me see beyond today.

Time alone to start my day,

So many Lord who try to sway, To push me toward some point of view. Lord, help me keep my eyes on You. May confidence and not despair Invade my soul when life’s unfair. Remind me, Lord, You’re in control, Abide in You, my constant goal. Lord, help me probe with eyes to see Inside my soul, the tendency To fall in line, go with the crowd. I pray instead I make You proud. Lord, help me focus not on gain But rather what I can attain To lift You up and glorify The God who reigns, who sits on high.

To talk to God, to read and pray, Help give each day a brand-new start, But we’re not made to live apart. I value time I spend with friends. It helps me see through a different lens. We each have traveled different roads. We each have carried different loads. We share our stories from the heart, Remember them when we’re apart. The points of view we each reflect Are different, yet we show respect. We laugh and joke, we tell a few, They’re mostly old, but some are new. It’s something that I recommend, Invest the time to make a friend.

A Family Near And Far By Melissa Henderson

Family can be defined in various ways—biological, adoptive, and friends who are so important to us we call them family. Those friendships can be near and far. When I was a young girl, my parents and I often traveled from Virginia to North Carolina to visit aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. I admired the way my Daddy would finish working his shift at the local shipyard and drive the route to our destination. His shift ended at midnight. Mama and I would arrive at the pickup area and wait to see Daddy approaching the car. After hugs, we settled in for the drive. Sometimes Mama drove so Daddy could rest. We often visited a local truck stop, which served the most delicious pancakes and the most awful sour orange juice. Even though I didn’t like the taste of the juice, I ordered the same food every time. This “middle of the night” meal was a chance for my parents to stretch their legs and for me to watch the big rigs drive in and out of the parking lot. After our meal and rest, we continued onward to North Carolina. There were times when we arrived early at Aunt Lerah’s and we had to sit in the car and wait until she woke up to let us in the house. We snuggled down under coats and blankets until the sun peeked over the house and the roosters began announcing their morning call. As Aunt

Lerah woke, she dressed and welcomed us into the house. One of the first things she did after we entered her home was to call our cousins to let them know we had arrived. “Come on over. They’re here.” In a short time, family began arriving to greet us. Laughter, more food, and stories of what was happening in the life of each person brought joy. In the afternoon, Mama, Daddy, and I often went for a ride while my aunt rested. My parents would point to places they visited in their youth. Each dirt road we traveled held special memories for my parents. We were in the country, not the city. We saw abandoned barns, tobacco farms, corner gas stations where an attendant came to the car to “fill the tank”, and many people enjoying the afternoon while sitting in their rocking chairs and waving to anyone passing by. Stories about family and friends often brought laughter. Other times, remembering those who had passed on brought tears. I always loved how Daddy and Mama never met a stranger. As we traveled on those country roads, Daddy would often stop the car to visit with an old friend. People that Mama and Daddy had not seen in a while would still remember and pause to visit.

“Mr. Barefoot, how are you doing these days?” Daddy would offer his hand for a handshake. “Why, Paul Lee, what are you doing back in these parts?” This question was asked many times. “Well, I’ve brought my family to see my old stomping grounds.” Daddy answered with a grin. Other times, Daddy and Mama would notice someone sitting on their front porch and once again stop the car and roll down the window.

My parents considered everyone to be family. There were times when strangers knocked on our door, asking for help with food or clothing. Mama and Daddy never turned anyone away. Even when we didn’t have much to spare, they found something to help anyone in need.

“Hello, Mrs. Burton, how are you?” Mama would ask.

A family can live near or far away. God’s family is made up of all kinds of people. The next time you chat with family or friends, remember we are created by God and we all have the opportunity to show His love to everyone.

“Yes, Mrs. Burton. I’m here visiting family.” Mama answered. Those friendly conversations went on for hours. I loved how my parents made everyone feel like family. Taking the time to pause and share conversation with old friends and new friends can bring a family atmosphere. By the time we arrived back at Aunt Lerah’s, more cousins had arrived and we were ready for fun, laughter, good food, and creating new memories. When the visit was complete and we traveled back home to Virginia, I missed the aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Yet, I knew there was more family waiting at home.

On The Road Of Praise By Andrea Marino

It was one of those ‘I get it Lord’ moments when leafing through a home décor catalog my eyes beheld a sign, actually a rustic wooden plaque, stating, “Sing to Him a new song”, (Psalm 33:3 NIV). Curiously touching my spirit, a smile broke out on my face. I had to agree my grumbling has been way too much lately. Here was God, graciously encouraging me to change my tune. As it was with the ancient Israelites complaining in their wilderness, so it was with me. Life rarely goes as we would like. Leaping over one hurdle, another one presents itself. If we aren’t careful, grumbling will become a bad habit to hinder faith, taking us off course in our walk with the Lord. I appreciate God’s unique ways of interrupting times of discouragement. I have to remember the heart of Psalm 33:3 and sing a song of praise to the Lord when the cares of this world seek to bring me down. A great escape for me is to hit the road on my bike, where I tune into praise and worship music. Pondering the Lord through song, considering all He has done, all He has blessed me with, and all He has planned for those who love Him is uplifting, working wonders for my weary soul (Proverbs 17:22a). On the road of praise, my heart can’t help but well up in joy. Truth is, Jesus has conquered the world (John 16:33).

Bulwark is the word used to describe God’s faithfulness in Psalm 91:4 (Key Word Study Bible NASB) and translates from the Hebrew/Greek as something surrounding a person. I think of the plot to capture the prophet, Elisha. He and his servant woke up to see a vast army of enemy soldiers on the horizon. Elisha’s servant was horror-stricken by the sight of them, but Elisha saw the greater number of warrior angels surrounding them. Elisha told his servant, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us outnumber those who are with them,” (2 Kings 6:16 HCS). Verse 17 describes the mountain covered with horses and chariots of fire all around them. We will, no doubt, encounter ‘giants in the land’ as we pass through this world. Each and every time we are brought to fear and/or despair is an opportunity to see God show Himself stronger—more than sufficient to take us all the way to the Promised Land. He is “the Most High over all the earth… above all the gods,” (Psalm 97:9 HCS). Even Wikipedia acknowledges God as the eternal Supreme Being who created all things. God is what godless people miss, and in their misguidedness, do the will of Lucifer, who is out to destroy everything good while destroying souls. I view this season of blatant evil permitted to parade around as God’s tough love reaching out to all mankind (a sort of last-ditch effort to reveal what they have missed). As we, His people, are suffering in Satan’s time of wrath unleashed upon the earth, we dare not forget Angel armies as a bulwark of divine protection. (Psalm 91:11).

Lord, how else should I pray except for more time so more and more people will get off the broad way that leads to hell? I pray for revival, a great harvesting of souls to happen upon the earth. God has been with me through everything and will not leave me now. “but those who trust in the LORD will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 HCS). “But as it is written: What eye did not see and ear did not hear, and what never entered the human mind—God prepared this for those who love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9 HCS). His promise of redemption and restoration is both real and imminent. The joy of the Lord is our strength. For He will absolutely be seen as King over all the earth (Zechariah 14:8). I want to finish my race with confident expectations of the reality I believe in, as Scripture declares. “Sing a new song to the Lord; sing His praise from the ends of the earth…. (He) advances like a warrior; He stirs up His zeal like a soldier. He shouts, He roars aloud, He prevails over His enemies.” (Isaiah 42: 10, 13 HCS).

Health Maintenance Regime By Dr. Kathleen B. Oden WOOHOO, it’s 2022! It is time to reset our immune systems. Why? To feel better, to have a better quality of life, to live longer, or to just look good. All those things can depend on whether we have a health maintenance regime. However, two reasons beat all the above for why we need a health maintenance regime.

And reason #2 is 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)…

Reason #1 is in 1 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)… “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; For the temple of God is holy, Which temple ye are.”

WOW! This really shows us how much God cares about our health maintenance regime. He is serious about us defiling our body (His temple) and He wants us to realize that we are bought at a price. We don’t own these bodies. Jesus died on the cross and paid the price for us.

Does that Scripture shock you? It shocked me when I first read it. OMG! Our body is the temple of God! Most people think that it is totally okay to do whatever they want to their bodies. What they don’t realize is that the body that God created for them to use does not belong to them. It belongs to God.

So, what are you doing to keep the temple of God healthy? Do you even have a health maintenance regime? This is the start of a new year and there is no better time than now to build up your immune system. And we all know that due to all the viruses that are in the world today, we need to step up our level of health maintenance.

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

This is no time to be slack about our health. This is no time to put our health on a back burner or a shelf. If ever there is a time to be serious or get serious about health maintenance, it is now! Because good health maintenance can make all the difference in our future quality of life.

Out with the old and in with the new. It’s the new year once again. Some who are still young have already made resolutions. Those of us who are older know better. If they are that easy to make, they are easy to break. Our biggest problem is that we have not counted the cost of our decision. Our struggle is not with intent but whether we commit. We fail too quickly and give up too easily and decide it’s too late to start again. But the Word tells us that God’s mercies are new every morning. If He has not given up on you, neither should you give up. This could finally be the time you break free from a lifetime of defeat. When the woman fell at the feet of Jesus for mercy, He told her that her sins, though they were many, were forgiven. It was a moment in time that freed her from a life of guilt. Though the outward consequence of sin may still remain with us, the inward cleansing brings new life. I am now free to be the new me. We all have the same problem and though it has many names, it results in the same action, which is living beneath the life God gave you. If you have sought His mercy and received His Spirit, there is a new you in you. You have been freed from that which compelled you to live a certain way. There is a new direction and mindset, a new compassion and devotion. You can say, “This time it will be different. I have found faith in a new hope and strength from a new power, to live above my emotions and beyond my limitations for a purpose greater than myself with eternal consequences.” Today does not have to be like yesterday, and tomorrow can be greater than today. Christ came to save your soul, but He gave you the power to change your life. The Word tells us to walk in the new man, to exercise our faith, and to practice what we believe. We are to speak to ourselves the word of God, to encourage ourselves in the things of God, and to think upon the goodness of God and why? Because little by little, day by day and victory by victory, you will find that it has brought out THE NEW IN YOU.


THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS LIKE

IN SEARCH OF GOD 2022

Jesus said we are able to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven by listening to Him and that by reading His words, more understanding will be given. We will then have an abundance of knowledge concerning it. (Matthew 13:11-52) Six times Jesus reveals the Kingdom of Heaven in these verses. Six times we glimpse the working of God in this present world. Jesus explains our current state and future reality best in verses 37-43. A transition is coming.

The Apostle Paul’s discourse to the philosophers at Athens (Acts 17:22-32) was a powerful message of revelation, especially verse 27. He declares God created the earth and placed men on it for one purpose; “So that they should seek the Lord in the hope that they may grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from us.” All of life is inconsequential compared to finding God. He is our highest quest in this life. God being ever-present is never far from us, but it is our heart that creates distance. He is found not in a place but in a Presence, not in liturgy but in loving kindness.

Though man has tried to build God’s kingdom on earth, it has never been about brick and block, but about flesh and blood. Peter said we are living stones being built up to house the Spirit of God on the earth. Paul said the Kingdom is not about food and drink but right standing with God, peace in our heart, and joy of life in the Holy Spirit. That cannot be contained in a cathedral or kept in a church. It is the Spirit of God residing in the soul. For those who seek it in a place will be left wanting and those who want the trappings of grandeur will find it a hollow shelter from life’s storms. It is as it was in the beginning when God breathed the Spirit of life into Adam and became a living soul, so Jesus now breathes life on His people to become the Kingdom. Jesus breathed on His disciples and said receive the Spirit and so with that, He reveals to us, this is what the Kingdom of Heaven is like.

One of the definitions of grope is to “search mentally with difficulty.” This is where we are to find God. This is where He speaks. You may find yourself in a crowd with many voices and some may bring comfort and direction, but when you are all alone, do you hear His voice? Do not be like the Israelites who sent Moses up the mountain to hear from God for them. We must individually and personally hear from God for ourselves. Many times the flesh can be full of someone else’s word, but our spirit is still starving for a word from heaven. It is truly with difficulty that we search mentally for God, but He is there to be found. I remind you of His Word when He said, “You will find Me when you search for Me with all of your heart.” Therein lies most of our problems. Our God is a jealous God and many times our heart is unfaithful. Ours should be a simple act of willful submission to an All-Powerful, Sovereign Being. One who from the beginning has desired to speak to His creation. From Adam’s open conversations with God to our times of searching mentally for Him with difficulty, He has always made Himself available if we persevere. So as the new year begins with all of the uncertainties it brings, let us seek answers to it by always being found...in search of God.

How can it be that we sometimes miss the goodness of God? That we fail to see the fruit of our prayers? I’m ashamed to say this has been true of me more times than I would like to admit. I can only praise God that He patiently reminds His children of His provision and grace. Such was the case a few weeks ago when He lovingly reminded me of a prayer I prayed in July 2017. As the church pianist played before the Sunday service began, it was as if God had said, “Hey, remember this? Remember when you prayed this prayer 4 years ago? Look how I have answered you!” As ‘Create in me a Clean Heart’ came forth from the piano keys, I remembered… During the week of our family vacation in Gulf Shores, Alabama, I walked the beach in the early morning hours. Frustrated with a heel injury that had prevented me from running, I prayed that God would help me be content with this circumstance. But more than even that, what I truly desired and sought in prayer was a renewal: to have a joy-filled walk with Christ. As I walked along the sand, a chorus frequently sung in church during my adolescent years came to mind: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, O Lord, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation. And renew a right spirit within me.” This song, based on Psalm 51:10-12, became my prayer throughout the week.

As I reflected on that time in Alabama, I could see there were months and even years of God’s provision that had led to that beach time prayer. A few months before the trip, I had been on a run with a friend who mentioned the volume of books she reads in a year. Both challenged and inspired by her, I made a goal to read one book per month and decided my beginning date for this endeavor would be June 1, 2017. The book I chose for that month had been a book about running, which I very much enjoyed. But for the following month, July, I chose a book that had been gracing my bookshelf for 14 years. I had intended to read Desiring God by John Piper when I bought it in 2003, but for some reason, I had not gotten to it. The reason is apparent to me only now: I was meant to read it in July 2017, while on vacation. Although I had been a follower of Christ from a young age, this book highlighted to me the glory and sovereignty of God in a striking way. While I know the Holy Spirit was working within me, I can see how this book was used as an instrument for renewal. Page by page during the 15-hour drive to Alabama, God was already answering my prayer before I even stepped foot on the sand. As I continued to read throughout that week, God graciously revealed His truth. In turn, my affections for God were elevated and I desired to know Him more.

Over the last 4.5 years, this desire has resulted in the reading of countless theological books written by wonderful men of God. I have so much gratitude for Luther, Calvin, Edwards, Spurgeon, Tozer, Lewis, Pink, Ryle, and Sproul… along with so many others! Their works have spurred me on to study the Bible like I never have before. Of course, there is no better book written than the very word of God! Only His word is living and active, piercing to the division of soul and spirit and able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). It is through His living and enduring word that we are born again (1 Peter 1:23). And it is through His word that He restored to me the joy of my salvation. All of this filled my mind as I heard that beautiful and nostalgic melody. With tears in my eyes, I praised God for answering my beach time prayer with such goodness, faithfulness, and love. As I draw these words to a close, I praise God for the honor of sharing this testimony with you. Indeed, the word of our testimony is powerful because it encourages fellow believers and reminds us of the faithfulness of God. But most importantly, our testimony gives glory to the only One deserving of it. With this in mind, I will conclude with a three-fold challenge for us all as we approach the New Year: 1) Let us pray for opportunities to share our testimonies with others. Unashamedly, let’s proclaim how God has worked in our lives! 2) May the words of Psalm 51:10-12 be our continuous prayer; for I am confident that when we ask for the joy of our salvation to be restored, He will be faithful to this in His time. 3) Let us be sure to thank Him for His answer to this prayer, giving all glory to the Giver of every good and perfect gift.

Christian Ideas Although the above resolutions are good things to do or change in our lives, most are broken within the first quarter of the new year. Our ideas are lofty but lack measurable results or detailed plans to succeed. So, instead, we dream and hope for a better year with a better us. But, what if we could resolve to become more Christ-like for the New Year? Not only would we become better people, but we could also make the world around us a better place by our example. Our lives will fall into place when we seek Christ first in all we do. Psalm 51:10-11 is a great place to begin as we seek God with a pure heart. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.” (Psalm 51:10-11 NIV) Christian New Year’s Resolutions Here is my list for setting Christian resolutions for 2022 and the biblical references to help us all grow more Christ-like. 1. Read the Bible—Psalm 119:11 (NASB), “I have treasured Your Word in my heart so that I may not sin against You.” Many people set a goal to read the entire Bible in a year. If you set this goal, many grand plans are available to help you track your progress and succeed. But we must be realistic and set an attainable goal, like reading several verses each day or even just one verse a day. The idea is to develop a new habit of seeking God in His word.

2. Attend Church—Hebrews 10:25 (NIV), “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Spending time with fellow Christians helps strengthen our faith. We are blessed to have so many options for attending church. Find the one that feels right for you and is biblically sound. 3. Pray daily—Ephesians 6:18 (NIV), “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Spend time in prayer each day, even if only for a few minutes. Try to start and end your day with a prayer of thankfulness for all God has given us. Reciting the Lord’s prayer is also an excellent place to begin to get into the habit of praying. 4. Love others—Mark 12:31 (NIV), “The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these.’” Love conquers so many problems in our world and our daily lives. When we love others, we find true peace in our hearts. 5. Help others—Proverbs 19:17 (ESV), “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed.” Imagine our world if everyone helped their neighbors in need.

James 5:13-16 (NIV), “Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Luke 6:27-28 (NIV), “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” I pray the Lord blesses you and your family during the coming year. CAST YOUR CARES By Gina Sewell Do you ever have those days, or weeks, that so much is going on that you just feel like you’re drowning in it all? Do you feel so overwhelmed by everything that you can barely function correctly? Well, that was me this past week. I scrambled trying to find encouragement and empowerment and inspiring words for this week’s post because, quite honestly, I was not feeling very empowered myself. 1 Peter 5:7-8 (NIV) tells us, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” In other words, give it all to God. If not, you’ll get upset and discouraged and overwhelmed and that’s where Satan can easily find his way in. But then, I noticed something else about this scripture. It states that the devil prowls around like a “roaring” lion. A roar is not silent. This tells me we do have a warning. Maybe that is where our anxiety comes in. So many times, we give in to that anxiety because we can’t see past it. I don’t know about you, but I certainly have no intention of being devoured by the enemy, so I am preparing for battle. Ephesians 6:11 (NIV) tells us, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes..”

Your “armor” is found in the Word. Pick up your Bible and read. Get on your knees and pray. The Lord knows your heart, but He wants you to bring it to Him. Sometimes, it’s hard to find the words, but in those times, you can rely on the Holy Spirit to intervene for you, but you have to initiate the conversation. God will never leave us, but He also will never force Himself on us. It is up to us to make that decision. Are you ready? He is waiting for you, and He loves you so much. Nothing you have ever done will change that. I was away from the Lord for several years because I was so angry with Him. I was in a place I did not belong and didn’t know how to escape. But, little by little, my heart returned to the Lord, and finally, I got on my knees. I prayed for so long that night that I actually fell asleep praying and crying. I didn’t know what to say to begin with, so I just said something like, “God, I hope you can hear me. I don’t know if you still love me after all I have done, but if you do, I really need your help.” I surrendered it all to Him that night. The next morning, I got my answer, because that was the day that my new life began. He does love me! Just like he loves you. Begin your new life today. “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9 NIV)


January Prayer By Tynea Lewis Dear Heavenly Father, we pray for the people who are starting something new. This new year is bringing about a big change, and it’s both exciting and a little scary. There are so many unknowns, and that is terrifying, but we also know that without change, we wouldn’t grow. Lord, we all have big dreams in our hearts, but we ask for wisdom to know which ones to chase. Help us discern where to place our time, energy, and talents in this new year. Redeeming The Time by Dave Evans

Time—it is ours for a brief season and then we exit stage left. In expressing the brevity of life, Moses wrote, “The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” (Psalm 90:10 NKJV) Dave Evans recently retired from his career as an estimator for an electrical contractor, but still works part-time. He recently served as Body Care Pastor for a small church and previously taught at a local Bible College for several years. God led him to found and serve in several outreach ministries—a pet therapy ministry, visiting several skilled nursing facilities and retirement homes: a prayer booth on a local street corner to allow people in the community to stop by for prayer needs and an evangelism table, typically set up once a month at various malls or stores, which made Bibles, tracts, DVDs, and other Christian materials available free of charge to interested shoppers. Dave has a bachelor’s degree in business administration/management. As a writer, he has had many poems and articles published in various periodicals and books. And he’s been privileged to do volunteer work for a local police department.

Life is a precious gift from God, and we must be good stewards of whatever amount of time God allots to us. William Penn, the Quaker, and founder of the Province of Pennsylvania wrote, “Time is what we want most, but what, alas! we use worst; and for which God will certainly most strictly reckon with us, when Time shall be no more.” Yes, we must recognize that God expects us to wisely use what He gives to us. Paul said, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise” (Ephesians 5:15 NKJV). And in the next verse he advised, “redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:16 NKJV, emphasis added) “Redeeming the time” can be translated as “buying the time.” The idea is that there is a season of opportunity to redeem or to buy “the time.” And so, buying the time should be done with a sense of urgency before the season passes. If an investor purchased $100 of Amazon stock at its initial public offering in 1997, he would have bought five shares of opportunity at the initial price of $18 per share. With the stock splits since then, those five shares would now be 60 shares, and at the current market value, they would be worth around $200,000. That would have been a wise investment, but buying, or redeeming the time, and seizing spiritual opportunities is of greater importance and eternal value, and it must be done while we have opportunities.


In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) the master commended two of his servants for their wise use of the talents he had entrusted to them, but he upbraided the third servant who did nothing with the one talent that had been left in his care. While the talents in the parable refer to sums of money, they have application to resources such as spiritual gifts and time. As long as God grants us the time, we must use what He has entrusted to us and wisely buy opportunities to witness for Him, to serve and grow in our relationship with Him, and to impact the lives of others for His glory. If we do so, then we will reap eternal dividends on the day when we give an accounting to our Master. None of us knows how much time is left to us, so it is imperative to focus on redeeming the time. The Psalmist prayed for a proper perspective: “O LORD, help me understand my mortality and the brevity of life! Let me realize how quickly my life will pass!” (Psalm 39:4 NET) And even if much of our time is already past, we can still redeem the time that remains even if it might be measured in minutes rather than years as Charles Spurgeon suggested: “Be parsimonious of minutes now, though you may have been, at one time, prodigal of years.” Redeeming the time… we must do it now when opportunity exists. “Only one life, ‘twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.” (C.T. Studd)

NEW YEAR IN EMERGING LIGHT By Dave Evans As dawn approaches, a new day breaks, a new year arrives; with the coming of the light shadowy images appear-indistinct yet visible: potential and promise, loss and gain, twists and turns, joy and pain, doubts and decisions, sunshine and rain, tests and temptations, fancy and plain with the emerging light, images become recognizable each day, one at a time, week after week, month after month; the answers and direction will come through the emerging light derived from Your Word. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

New Year’s Prayers By Craig Ruhl

As the new year quickly approaches, many of us will begin making plans for the coming months—marking calendars, starting new journals, and making plans. Last year’s calendars will come off the wall and refrigerator and fresh clean ones will replace them. The past year’s journals will be closed, and new pages opened to record the thoughts, events, and feelings that haven’t happened yet but are surely coming. Yes, the end of one year and the beginning of another is significant in many ways and yet, so insignificant in others. As my seventy-fifth birthday will follow closely after the new year starts, I also think about my navigating another trip around the sun, what I left in the past, and what lies ahead. Three-quarters of a century may not count for much in the overall scheme of life, but it is meaningful to me. I look back on all the years where I just assumed there would even be a new year for me and that all my plans would see fruition. The years came, but most of my planning did not survive for very long.

The other request I include in prayer is for forgiveness. One of the greatest gifts that God has bestowed on us is the gift of forgiveness. Here are two verses that I keep close to remind me: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV) “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9 KJV) So, I confess my sins, past and present. I repent of those sins, turning away from them. I ask for forgiveness, confident that I am indeed forgiven, and that God has wiped my slate clean. I believe this is a fitting way to close out the old year and begin a new one.

This year, instead of making a list of resolutions or promises, I am choosing to be in prayer. My daily prayers include requests for wisdom and discernment regarding life’s decisions and choices. This is especially important as I approach this coming year. I am presented with a blank canvas and all the tools needed to create a life worthy of a child of God. My request is for guidance on how to be more Christlike in my living. I pray I am born again each day in Christ. 24 | M AG A Z I N E N A M E PAGE 3 24


As I was writing this article, my wife, Karen, and I were talking, and the subject came up of having an internal GPS system that was formatted by the Creator. Wouldn’t that be cool? Each of us would have a moral compass, wisdom, discernment, and, importantly, the ability to ignore the commands and strike off on our own. If we wanted help in choosing, all we would have to do is think a request and the suggested course would pop onto our mental screen. The dreaded “off-course” message would only be a small voice, easily ignored, but so very important. Outstanding! But wait a minute. Isn’t that what we already have? We are children of God, created in His image, and endowed by our Creator with everything we need to navigate life. All we have to do is ask for His help and guidance, and then be quiet and listen for His still voice. I know my Creator granted me free will and the freedom to make my own choices. He even provided me with what I can call an owner’s manual—the Bible. Jesus told us He would send us a helper, the Holy Spirit, to be with us. As I spend time in the Word, I gain a new perspective and understanding of how I fit into this thing we call life. As the new year looms, I again resolve to be even more centered on learning and understanding what God wants me to know and then to act faithfully on that knowledge. I will be still, listen, and follow.

As each of us plans for a fresh new beginning, let’s not forget to consult the Lord and ask for help. Do not be held captive by the past. That has been forgiven. I encourage each of us to start a new dedicated reading of the Bible. If you are a couple, do that together. Beyond reading the Word, it is necessary to study and digest what we have learned. Joining a small study group is a wonderful way to accomplish this. Many online devotion sites provide daily Bible verse studies and yearly Bible reading plans. One caution here—be wary of sites or forums where God’s word is used out of context. Use your personal Bible to read and verify what others tell you. Put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) so that you may stand firm against those who would attack your faith. Please remember that all we do or aspire to do is without foundation and will ultimately fail unless we unconditionally surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) Happy New Year! I am sure you will be blessed and will be a blessing to others.

Peter Caligiuri has been writing since he was a teenager. Both short poems and devotionals have appeared in various periodicals such as Secret Place, Breakthrough Intercessor, and The Upper Room. Last week, we had just finished our Christmas caroling time at a nursing home and began to pass out some large print Christmas devotional books as our gift to the residents. Most of them lit up with smiles and thanked us for the book, but when one of our volunteers came to a table in the back, the lady reached out and slipped three one-dollar bills into their hand. Despite urging her that she didn’t need to pay for our gift, she insisted, “No, please take it! I want to give something!” That dear lady not only reminded me of the widow in today’s verse, but she also showed me that longing to give is a basic desire of every heart. Some of us, unfortunately, have had that desire dampened by people who have taken unfair advantage of us. But Jesus never mentioned anything about how well the two little coins she contributed were spent. What mattered to Him, was that the love she gave with made the gift precious. None of the rich guys who went ahead of her and made a big deal of their offerings had impressed Jesus. But the small sacrifice that she eagerly gave with a pure heart was a treasure to Him. That also reminded me that whether we have gold, frankincense, and myrrh or just two pennies, God sees more than pennies, and He is watching our hearts today!


I L L U M I N AT E U S O LO R D By Steve Wilson

Have you ever looked around during a worship service and wondered how these individuals from all walks of life, this imperfect sampling of humanity, ended up in one place with one purpose—to worship our Creator? I don’t believe it is a random act or a coincidence that God puts us in the right place at the right time to fulfill His plan for a season. I believe God has His plans or “patterns” so to speak laid out in a plan of perfection only God can orchestrate. God then looks for those “willing vessels” to fit in like puzzle pieces to complement His master plan. I liken this to working with stained glass. You begin with a pattern that holds a special attraction or interest, something created for its deliberate and intended purpose; even if it’s only for pure pleasure. The pattern reflects a complete but monochromatic version of the completed piece. The next step is the selection of glass for the piece. Each of us is like the spectrum of glass available for use. We are all fashioned into our designated colors, textures, and yes, stress points based on our experiences, influences, emotions, and our willingness to be molded and shaped into God’s intended purpose. God wants to cut away the unnecessary and chip away the stubborn imperfections to transform us into exactly what we were intended; to be an object of His affection; a perfect fit!

And God knows where each of us is destined to “fit in”; to minister, to grow, to illuminate the love of Christ in us. It doesn’t matter whether we are a corner piece or center bevel; we are just as important in God’s eyes. The leadership of the church is the framework and joints, the zinc and lead of God’s special project to “hold” all of His precious pieces together in one place. The leadership ensures continuity and conformity; to encourage the body of Christ to fellowship, minister, and encourage one another; to keep us as one cohesive unit. And finally, we have the solder that binds everything together; our love for God and His everlasting love for us. That is the beauty that illuminates through us like the sun shining through a stained glass masterpiece, overwhelming us with the brilliance of His perfection and inspiring us with the awesome knowledge that we are so much more as a collective ensemble than as individual shattered shards of broken humanity. “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9 NIV)

Gracefully Broken By Ama Afriyie-Jenkins

He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3) There is nothing graceful about a broken piece. Usually, when a piece breaks, it shatters abruptly, the edges become rough, and the impact therein may be irreparable. Contrarily, God does the opposite in our lives—when He breaks us, He delicately crushes us gently and lovingly. Hannah is a biblical example of a woman who was gracefully broken by God. Let’s backtrack to the book of Judges. The central verse that kept recurring was, “In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes…” (Judges 21:25 NJKV). This verse suggests that God needed a deliverer for the lawless state of Israel and the account of Hannah reveals how God took a broken woman through an unpleasant process to institute his purpose—raise a Prophet for Israel. In 1 Samuel, Chapter 1, Elkanah and his family went up to Shiloh each year to offer sacrifices. Verse 5 (NKJV), “But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the Lord had closed her womb” strikes me a lot. Amazingly, Hannah was not barren. Rather, God had intentionally shut her womb to accomplish His will. This verse should encourage us that as long as we love the Lord and have been called according to His purpose, God sometimes puts a halt to our plans and desires. Here’s a further reassurance: even if the halt comes from the devil’s camp, God is very capable of thwarting the schemes of the enemy and reviving every hopeless situation. 28 | M AG A Z I N E N A M E PAGE 3 28

God shut Hannah’s womb because heaven eagerly awaited her attention and her will to align with God’s will. It was more than the yearly sacrifices! God needed Hannah’s heart and obedience as well. Next time you find yourself broken and navigating through a seemingly impossible situation, don’t for once think that God has forsaken you. Be assured that God has intentionally chosen you to walk through this difficult path. “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,” (James 1:2 NKJV). Like Hannah, you are in your waiting process and in dire need of a child, but what God wants for you is a child who would grow up to correct the generational disorders in your family. Whatever delay you may experience in any area of your life, remember that God has a bigger picture in mind— to establish His will in your life as it is in heaven. Hannah’s earnest prayer was to have a child to escape the taunts of her rival. Samuel was not just a promised child to silence her enemies but more importantly, he was God’s timely instrument to bring deliverance to Israel from their wayward ways. We always need to change our self-centered prayers to receive our miracle from God. In 1 Samuel 1:11, Hannah made a solemn promise to God, and that is the exact place God needed her to be before he gave her a child. After Hannah’s vow, God gave her more than she bargained for. “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,” (Ephesians 3:20 NKJV). Here’s our confidence in God: He will always give us more than we genuinely ask Him for or imagine.


Interestingly, God needed Hannah’s willingness and obedience to dedicate back to Him whatever she received from Him. “Then she made a vow and said, ‘O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head” (1 Samuel 1:11 NKJV). That was exactly what God needed from Hannah and that is why she went through a waiting process and was gracefully broken. From verse 24 forward, Hannah fulfills her vow to God by dedicating Samuel back to God all the days of his life. It’s very easy to make promises, but very difficult to uphold them. Let’s not forget to honor our vow to God after we have received our long-awaited testimony.

In the process of time, God gave Hannah exactly what she prayed for and her joy was unspeakable, which she extensively expressed in 1 Samuel Chapter 2. Whichever facet of life you are currently in, here’s a little encouragement for you. If you are in a dark place, hold on to God like never before and He will establish His will in your life. When you are in a waiting process, speak the promises of God over your life and you will see it manifest. If you made a vow to God, don’t forget to honor your promise. More importantly, if you have received your long-awaited testimony, praise God and dedicate it back to God, as Hannah did.

Second Chance— A New Year’s Miracle By Brenda McDaniel

It was the winter break, and the college students had gone home to enjoy the Christmas holidays with their families. My young niece, Casey, a college student in her twenties, was home spending time with her family and her nearby friends. The family decorated the home together, putting up the tree, putting lights up on the outside of the house, and decorations throughout the rest of the house, making it a festive and happy home to celebrate the holidays in. Casey’s mom, Debbie, worked two jobs to help pay bills. She was a counselor and held two counseling positions, one with the Veterans Administration and another at a private counseling group. Her dad, Gary, also worked full time. Casey’s married sister, Lauren, two years older than Casey, lived nearby. Since her family worked right up to the Christmas holidays, Casey could spend time with her small group of friends, three or four girls who were past schoolmates, and people she worked with at the pharmacy. The group enjoyed each other’s company when they could get together, laughing, shopping, and going out to eat.

On Christmas Eve, the group went out for dinner and to shop for some last-minute Christmas gifts. There were four girls, two in the front, and Casey and Sally in the back of the SUV on their way to a restaurant for a late meal. It was getting dark earlier since it was winter and pouring freezing rain had come down, making the road hard to see. The freezing temperature created a glaze of ice on parts of the road. As Sarah, the driver of the SUV, was going around a sharp curve, she hit some dark ice that she didn’t see in the dark and pouring rain. The SUV slid and she over-corrected the steering wheel, jerking it to the left. The SUV flipped three times, rolling over on its roof, which crushed. No one in the vehicle was wearing a safety belt. The driver, Sarah, was thrown through the front windshield and landed on the gravel. Two of the girls stayed in the SUV. They were bruised, and the girl seated beside Casey suffered broken vertebrae. But dear Lord, Casey went flying out the back window and was thrown several feet into a muddy, graveled ditch.


At the hospital, they cried and prayed to their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to save and heal their badly hurt daughter. After a while, the doctor came out and told them Casey would be in intensive care for several days. Many tests and x-rays were needed to determine the severity of her brain injury and her broken clavicle. The doctor informed them they would need to transport Casey to a hospital out of town that had a traumatic brain injury unit. Once Casey had been admitted to the larger hospital’s trauma unit, Debbie, Gary, and Lauren were able to visit every day, although only one person could stay with Casey at a time. In cases such as Casey’s, the brain has to heal itself, which takes a long time. The doctors and nurses treated the brain swelling with meds and cool wraps. Anything they thought would help reduce the brain swelling and the pain from the injury. Debbie and Lauren sat by her bed for hours at a time. After several days, Casey finally opened her eyes, smiled, and came back to her loving family. Tears ran down everyone’s eyes and they breathed a lot easier, releasing their pent-up emotions but trying not to show Casey, as they needed her to stay strong for her battle ahead. The day came for her release from the hospital and the family was so happy. But Casey wasn’t out of the woods yet. Everything depended on how the injury would affect her brain’s functioning in the days to come, as well as any further side effects such as short and long-term memory problems. Casey went home given many medications to take for her brain and shoulder injury.

The Lord gave Casey a second chance at life. And she and her family knew they had received a Christmas and New Year miracle that cold, wet, dangerous night. Casey’s aunt and uncle visited her and gifted her with a picture of her guardian angel (her grandmother) that now sits on her bookshelf next to her bed, watching over Casey always and forever. The New Year’s miracle—she recovered with only a mild memory loss and received a Second Chance! “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV)

We visited Southport, NC in December 2021, a small and beautiful town on the river. We had visited Southport just after Hurricane Florence in 2018. The hurricane left behind some damage but all is well now! We had dinner at one of the restaurants that took a big hit in ‘18. Road Trippin’ To Oak Island and Area, North Carolina by Karen Ruhl

We are so blessed to live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and only 4.5 hours from the beaches of North Carolina. This year, we chose to visit Oak Island and stayed in Southport, NC. Oak Island is on Cape Fear River and has beaches on the river and ocean. The Oak Island Lighthouse is very different from the many I have photographed. The lighthouse was built in 1958 at a cost of $110,000 and is 158 feet high. To access the light, you have to climb ladders (no thank you). There is a Coast Guard Station next to the light. Across the street, the Atlantic Ocean awaits! Just a short walk up the boardwalk and down to the beach. I was the only one on the beach and was able to collect some sea shells, mostly the clam shells. The colors fascinate me and look pretty in a bowl or glass jar. Oak Island has a shopping district and several restaurants. We love going this time of year because there are no crowds and we can park right at the beach so Craig has easy access. This year we had mild temperatures, a couple of days were in the 60’s and 70’s.

The weather was so warm that walking on the beach looking for seashells and enjoying the sun was a true treat in late December. The waves were beautiful and I had the beach to myself.

The Trouble With Resolutions by Sharon K. Connell Each year, when the New Year approaches, people make up New Year’s resolutions. They are going to lose weight, stop eating junk food, curb their intake of chocolate and coffee, stop lying, swearing, cheating, and any number of unacceptable behavior traits. Most start off well, for at least a month or two; maybe less. But hardly anyone keeps those resolutions for long. Why is it people even bother to make resolutions? Usually, because they want to become a better person. But if that’s so, why not just make the changes now? Why wait until the New Year to start? Have we become so much like sheep we have to follow the crowd? Every new fad that comes along, people have to jump on the bandwagon. Do you remember the cabbage soup diet? Most of you are probably too young to remember that. But there have been plenty of other fad diets to take its place. The bottom line is, they are fads. Just like making New Year’s resolutions.

How do you decide what resolution to make in the first place? Perhaps because you know some things in your life need to be changed? Do you truthfully want to know what needs to be changed in your life? Or is it just a show, because everyone else is making a resolution and you want to be a part of the crowd? If you want to change the things in your life that need changing, pray this as the psalmist did. “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalms 139:23 KJV) Early in my adult life, I realized making New Year’s resolutions was something everyone talked about as if, come December, no one had anything better to discuss when it came to the upcoming year. “Hey, what resolution are you making on the first day of the year?” Me: None. Why didn’t I make resolutions? As I said, why wait until the first of the year to change something you know needs changing? Do it when you realize you need a change. I guarantee your resolve will last longer if it’s something you truly want to change and you alter things when the Lord calls your attention to them.


There are many things I would like to change. I’d like to read God’s Word more. This has been an ongoing desire of mine. Every year, I find I can read a little more each time I open The Book. I’ve stopped keeping track of how many times I’ve read through the Bible from cover to cover because I realized keeping track was simply a pride thing. Now I just keep reading every day.

Listen more, speak less, hold your temper. “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” (James 1:19-21 KJV)

More prayer and becoming a better prayer warrior for those around me is another thing I’d like to change. We all have such busy lives today, despite all the promises about computers and inventions man has created making our lives easier. But setting aside time to commune with my Lord is something I’d like to do more often. Formal prayer, in-depth, private prayer, if you will. I do talk to God all day long, but I want to increase my alone, quiet time with Him.

Be thankful for everything, even when you are not pleased with the circumstances. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18 KJV)

If you’ve made a list of resolutions, how many of them do you think you’ll keep? My advice: 1. Stop worrying about them. Change the things God wants you to change and let the others go. My experience is God will tell you what you need to work on through constantly bringing something to mind when He wants you to make a change, as long as you are open and receptive to the Holy Spirit’s prompting. 2. Don’t make a list. Just work at what you know needs improvement a little at a time each day. And don’t wait for next year to start the changes that should be made. Forget the resolutions. Make some commitments to yourself and God about things in your life you know you need to improve and start working on them. 3. Never mind telling others about your commitments to God. You don’t need the constant pressure of people asking you if you’ve kept your resolve. God knows. Make those commitments to Him instead of declaring them to the world.

Show love to others no matter who they are. “And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” (Colossians 3:14-15 KJV)

Do your best not to offend others. “Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:” (2 Corinthians 6:3 KJV) Treat others as you would like them to treat you. “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” (Luke 6:31 KJV) This one explains itself. Very hard to do sometimes, but very rewarding when you do. “But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” (Luke 6:27-28 KJV) Study God’s Word with an open heart and a request for God to show you the truth. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV) “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5 KJV) Now, pitch that list of resolutions, and ask the Lord what He wants of you.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 KJV) Here are some things to work on in your life, directly from the Bible. No need to wait for next January to start either.

Strength In The Struggle by Shara Bueler-Repka

All wet and fresh, Slippy blinked and looked around at her new world, and the show began. A low rumble sounded from her mama’s chest as she spoke to her calf. She proceeded to lick her all over to stimulate her new muscles.

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:2-4 NKJV). I’ve never seen a cow give birth from start to finish. I usually come across this fascinating bit of Creation either halfway through the process or when the calf is already on the ground. I was keeping an eye on the one last cow from the rancher’s herd, as I figured she’d give birth within the next day or so. As I watched her, she lay down. Then she got up, circled, and lay down again with her back legs stretched out. I knew it was time. I walked back to the farmhouse and informed my motherin-law and my husband, Bruce, that the herd would expand shortly. Bruce grabbed the binoculars and spied on the mama cow through the windows. I took his cue and stepped out on the front stoop and peered through another pair of nocs. The miracle of life is awe-inspiring. How could anyone even imagine God isn’t real? We watched every inch of the calf come out. When it finally was lying on the grass, we took off out the gate and across the pasture to check out the rest of the process. I named it Slick… until we found out she was a heifer (girl). Bruce promptly named her Slippy.

Little did I know, I would receive some much-needed encouragement—again—by the simple hand of God’s creative touch. Slippy’s spindly little legs did their best to support her on the slick grass. Then her legs gave way, and she sprawled out. It was kind of comical, but at the same time, I wanted to run over and help her. However, I knew full well this was a natural part of the process and I had to let her work it out. We observed her mama during the entire ordeal. She licked the calf for a bit, then moved away and munched on grass. She didn’t seem concerned at all as Slippy resumed her strenuous efforts. But I watched her mama’s eyes—her eyes keenly aware of her calf’s every move. I noticed that Slippy had difficulty getting her hind end to cooperate as she struggled to stand. Suddenly, Mama turned and stepped beside her. She licked Slippy’s hind end and the upper part of her back legs, stimulating them once again. By instinct, the mama worked on the parts of Slippy that gave her trouble. Then she moved off. Slippy started her mission again. She did a bit better this time—she got all four feet on the ground. However, gravity prevailed, and down she went again. But it was progress. I noticed that each time she struggled, she grew stronger. With the next attempt, she progressed a little more and fell less.


She never gave up, no matter how many times she seemed to fail, even when she toppled head-overheels. She seemed to realize quitting meant dying. Her efforts weren’t just about getting to her feet. She needed to make it to the lifeline at her mother’s utter—the life-giving milk that would help her grow into a stronger calf and eventually to a mature cow. (And, of course, to be strong enough to play with her bovine buddies in the pasture!) In the struggles we face through the trials of life, we may feel as though the Lord has walked off. Or, if He’s standing next to us, it sure seems He isn’t doing much to help. But like that cow, He never takes His eyes off us. And at the exact time, He moves in and gives us exactly what we need, when we need it. He also knows during the struggle, our muscles become stronger; faith-muscles, trust-muscles, etc. that have to be developed if we’re to stand strong. Let’s be honest. Unless one thrives on drama, I don’t think anyone truly enjoys afflictions. The struggles we go through are hard. They’re frustrating. Sometimes it’s difficult to muster up the energy to try anymore. Yet, our very survival depends on us never giving up. And although we may assume, during our hardships, God has “left the building,” He hasn’t. Nor would He. In fact, quite the contrary. Most of us have heard the verse, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 NKJV). Even though we may feel He has, our feelings are just that… feelings. And most of the time, our feelings are not the truth. The moral of my lesson that day? We all struggle— no matter where we are in life. It’s what we do in the struggle and with the struggle that makes the difference between life and death. The only real failure is if we lose hope and quit. And I don’t know about you, but too many buzzards are hovering that are all too willing to swoop in if I even think about giving up! “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV)

Peace had been removed; fear had taken its place. Every human had been separated from seeing God’s face. Over four centuries had passed since anyone heard God’s voice. People were waiting for a Messiah, for a reason to rejoice. Long ago prophets had told of a coming Jewish King. Emmanuel would be His Name; Salvation He would bring. Man and God could once again relate as family. Ultimate reconciliation came to us as sin’s remedy. So God left Heaven to come and dwell with man. The angels announced to shepherds the start of the plan. Keep the message going, was what they were told to do. Now that assignment has been passed along to me and you. Often in the past, God would send angels from above. We are today’s messengers; people must know of Christ’s love.

ENTERING THE NEW YEAR WITH HOPE By Steve Wilson

Someone once stated, “Men plan, God laughs” and looking back at your previous year, perhaps you can relate! My wife and I sure have had our share of trials at times these past few years; a couple of those trials even followed us into the following New Year. And while some folks are busily jotting down their New Year’s resolutions and planning every week for the next year, others are facing the upcoming new year with the “same stuff, different year” philosophy. But just for an instant, a brief moment in time, if you look at your new calendar just right, you’ll see it; a blank slate, an empty page, a blossoming hope for better days ahead. Sure, I’ve been one of those resolution driven individuals who would charge into the New Year touting remarks like, “I will strive to eat better” or “I will endeavor to exercise more consistently and get in better shape” or even “I will attempt to be the best version of myself”… whatever that means? Without some thought, planning, and preparation, many jump into these resolutions and burn themselves out after only a couple of weeks. I’ve touted the first two “resolutions” and reflected below is a sampling of my personal experiences.

A few years (or so) ago, my wife and I joined Weight Watchers to shed some weight and generally feel better. I was doing pretty well, getting into the groove of eating certain foods that were considered healthy and, being a creature of habit, eating these same foods on a regular basis. On one occasion at our WW group meeting, I had a particularly good weight loss week, and so I was encouraged to share what I had been doing. Being rather proud of myself and that week’s accomplishments, I proceeded to share with the group what I routinely ate for breakfast. There were audible gasps throughout the group and I thought the one lady in the third row was going to pass out right there; it seems what I thought was normal and healthy for me had exceeded 98% of the group member’s point total for half the day! “You must have a great metabolism,” they said… whatever… The other activity I would dabble in at times was exercise. As those of you who know me can attest, I’m not exactly the poster child for Mr. Olympia. However, exercise is the catalyst that helps me lose weight and keeps my health in check. I remember one particular early morning, dragging my carcass into the local YMCA to work out before work. I always began my morning routine warming up, most of the time on the Elliptical machine. As luck would have it that morning, the only machine open was beside the most perfect specimen of a human being. I’m pretty sure that he turned his machine on the “MEGA MACHO” setting for his sixty minutes of pure bliss, complete with a dumbbell in one hand, a power drink in the other while pouring over a book in front of him.


If he did sweat, I’m sure the one drop that dribbled down the side of his head smelled like Irish Spring. I, on the other hand, turned my machine on the desired setting of “NINJA TURTLE”. After five minutes on the machine, I appeared to have just completed an ice bucket challenge, for sweat was pouring from every pore. I swear I was getting stares like, “you ARE going to clean that area up, aren’t you?”… yeah, whatever… Many times in our lives, we are railroaded into believing a misplaced opinion or criticism and it, well, gets us off track from meeting our goals, resolutions, and/or dreams until they are never realized; they never come to fruition. We have to be determined to focus on the prize before us, to block out all outside negative influences if we want to see our hopes and dreams become a certainty. But here’s another train of thought; what if your goal/dream/hope was only a selfish want that should never have been realized, anyway? What if that goal you’re spending so much time and energy attempting to birth is out of line with your needs or the needs of your family; more importantly, what if it’s directly out of line with God’s will for your life? The hymnist, William Mote, penned the first few lines of his beloved hymn, The Solid Rock, which reflects how we must align our hopes, dreams, and goals. “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.” Once our hopes are based on God’s will and not our own, the future becomes so much brighter and a lot less scary. For if we truly believe everything we see, hear and read in the media, social media, and print, from the hyped-up dread over COVID to rampant crime statistics, hope would scarcely be found. It’s only when we completely rely on God’s will for our lives, does our future shine with the brilliant hope of tomorrow and eternity; for even death itself doesn’t have the fatal sting when we are one of His own.

Romans 8:23-25 (NIV) states, “Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” Yep, we can hold on to the hope of something greater one day; but for now, we have to be patient AND obedient to the will of our loving Heavenly Father. Just one more thing to consider; we all go through different seasons in our lives. Just as storms come and go, even though the storm may be severe at the time, they eventually blow over and the sun shines once more. So it is with the situation you currently face; God may not remove the storm clouds from your life, but he’s definitely there beside you to walk with you through the storm. What a comforting thought that reinforces our hope for tomorrow as we step into a new year! So, what does your new year look like? Are you already frazzled from all the upcoming self-proclaimed goals, resolutions, and deadlines you have laid out for yourself, or are you going to listen and act based on God’s will for your life? My goal for this next year is to strive to nestle closer to the One who knows me best and loves me most. ANSWERED PRAYERS 2021 By Cindy Oriol

Several years ago, I was diagnosed as having non-epileptic seizures. Another name for them is NES. They mimic epileptic seizures but without any unusual electrical activity in the brain. NES is mostly caused by mental stress, or a physical condition including diabetes, a heart condition that causes a person to faint, emotional pain, being bullied, physical abuse, or a major accident. They are most common in women and are also more common in people with other conditions, such as depression or anxiety. A patient with these will not show unusual electrical activity in the brain on the EEG. Psychotherapy is the most common treatment. This may include cognitive-behavioral therapy. This will take several months to work, and the patient must continue with their treatment plan. I was definitely a prime candidate to be diagnosed with NES. I was suffering from mental stress, a heart condition that caused me to faint, diabetes, being bullied, and mental abuse. I was bullied as a child and those hurtful words and bruises from when I was beaten up on the way home from school were carried into my adulthood. They continued to haunt me. They were so hurtful, I developed low self-esteem and I thought I was ugly, worth nothing, and dumb—until I met Jesus. Jesus looks on the inside of a person, not the outer side. When He told me I was very special, that I wasn’t dumb, and that He loves me, He really helped me with the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder I was going through. 48 | M AG A Z I N E N A M E PAGE 3 48

In March 2021, I had a virtual visit with a new neurologist from the Cleveland Clinic. After talking to her and telling her step by step what I was going through, she diagnosed me with having NES. Right before our zoom meeting was completed, she witnessed me having a seizure. I was slapping both sides of my face and was groaning and moaning really loud. Then I went down to the floor. She found out I was all right and ended our meeting. In May, I could actually see her in person. We discussed things like my symptoms and going to visit her physical therapist in her group of doctors. My husband pushed me in a wheelchair to visit her. She had me do a few exercises for her like, standing up from my seated position in the wheelchair and walking with a walker. We tossed a ball back and forth to each other. She had suspected that my balance was in very poor condition and my strength would be very weak, and she was right. My readers, I was definitely led by the Lord to be examined by her. Several other neurologists in the past had thought I had NES but none of them ever told me that my seizures could eventually dissipate. When she spoke those words, “Cindy, you can be healed,” something in my brain clicked. The thought of never having another seizure or being thrashed back and forth like a “rag doll” brought tears to my eyes because now I not only had hope from the Lord but also my specialist.


I was ready to start searching hard for a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Doctor of Physical Therapy. When we arrived home from our five-hour drive, I immediately started searching the web. First, I prayed, and the Lord revealed to me the most helpful people to work on getting my body aligned once again and work on my strength and retraining my brain. I suffered a lot of agonizing pain during my treatments, but it was worth it. I was determined to get well. I went into both of my therapies in a wheelchair. After eight long and painful months, I am so excited to share this news with all of you. I have graduated from using a wheelchair to just a cane at times. Revelation 21:5 (NIV) says, “He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’” I wanted a new body, one that wouldn’t hurt so much, and God answered my prayer. I look and feel like a brand-new woman. Prayers work, and I am a prime example of becoming healed. I had so many people praying for me. I never gave up, nor have I ever lost my faith, in fact, it grows stronger with every waking moment of the day.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” (1 Peter 5:10 NIV) If you are in need of hope, cry out to God. He will hear you. He is the hope and strength that I hung onto daily with each pain I endured and the many seizures I was experiencing. Only One Resolution For The Year By Joseph Akinrinola

The close of one year and the beginning of a new year is always a period when people make new year’s resolutions. I don’t have any issues with that, although I have seen countless numbers of people, even believers, reverting to their old nature within a short period into the year. We usually have a long list of what to do and what not to do. However, we only needed one resolution for the year. This one choice will drive all other dreams and aspirations to fruition. I know there are unmet desires last year. This year we still have many things we plan to achieve in our careers, relationship, academics, ministry, health, etc. Still, without this one thing, our best plan will be a mirage. Let us read this scripture. Matthew 19:16-22. The young, rich man in the passage has everything going for him by all the standards of the world. On top of this was his impeccable record of keeping the religious law. Notwithstanding, he missed it where it matters most. This is his love for God. And this is where most of us, as believers, missed it in our plan for the year.

The scripture says the young man returned sorrowfully because he had many possessions. But in my estimation of what Jesus demanded from him, it was many possessions that had that man. Therefore, we should pick God as number one in our to-do list and to-have needs this year. That will be our mark of love for Him. Then, the following scripture will come to bear in our lives: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 NKJV) In seeking God first, His words must be our number one companion this year. It is His word that must be the ultimate arbiter in all cases. God’s words are the only weapon we have to place demands on heaven to release our blessing. His words will also guide us against errors that may come in the year. That there wouldn’t be a storm in the year will be a statement of deceit. Nevertheless, God’s words will be our anchor.


Also, when disappointment and discouragement come, God’s words comfort us. No wonder Jesus commended Mary for choosing that one important resolution. “And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.’” (Luke 10:41-42 NKJV) Mind you, several things will contend for our attention this year as always, but being resolute on one essential thing is the key to remaining afloat over the negative side of the new year. Each new year comes with its challenges. Just as Moses demanded to know from God if He wanted them to go beyond the river. He acknowledged he did not know what was ahead of them, but God’s presence would be their security. In the same way, let our focus be on God in the new year. Though we do not know what the year holds, yet we know a God who is in charge of this year. Once we place God first, He will not leave us behind. That was His promise and His word is His fidelity.

Restored

By Karen Ruhl Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send [a]Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began. - Acts 3:19-21 There are many stories of restoration in the Bible. Stories of Israel and Judah, restoration of people like Job, and the woman at the well. And chances are, if you ask anyone who has repented and turned away from their wicked ways, they will tell you they have been restored.

When I got back home, I was frightened and the evil one tried to frighten me even more by putting thoughts in front of me. I prayed to God for wisdom and understanding. I prayed, asking for guidance because I felt we needed to make changes when Craig was released.

What did Jesus say about restoration?

When Craig was released and came back home to the RV, I told him we needed to have a serious talk. He agreed. It was at that time that we decided to sell our van, keep my car, and move back to Ohio so that I would be close to my family. Leaving sunny, warm California for Ohio winters was not an easy decision, but we both knew I could not stay and maintain the RV by myself.

“And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” (1 Peter 5:10 ESV) There are many references to being restored in the Bible. When God restores people, He usually gives them much more than they lost. He blesses people for their faith. I recently wrote a brief article about how God has restored Craig and me. While living in southern California, we both lost our jobs within months of each other. We had to sell our home and by the Grace of God, we broke even where others were losing everything. At that time, we owned a 32-foot motor coach (nothing fancy) that we were able to move into. We had shelter, food, and all we needed. We still had a limited income coming in from some of my clients and Craig’s social security, so we could get by. As we were getting adjusted to living in the motorcoach, Craig got very sick. He didn’t want to get out of bed and I truthfully had to threaten him with calling an ambulance to get him up. We did not have slide-outs, so it would have been difficult to get him out of the RV. We got to the hospital and Craig walked in on his own. When they checked his stats, his oxygen was down to 60%. No one could believe he had walked in on his own. After getting a bed in ER, it was determined that he had pneumonia and congestive heart failure. He was admitted. This was in 2013. 52 | M AG A Z I N E N A M E PAGE 3 52

We left in early June 2013 and arrived back in Ohio on June 19th. I had talked to a campground before leaving California and we had a site reserved. The manager told me they needed someone to clean the campground in return for free rent. I signed up. It truly was a blessing. We lived on a lake, and I could continue working remotely with my clients in California while cleaning the campground. After a few months, a cabin became open, and the managers offered it to us for the winter again, paid for if I continued to clean. We were grateful to be able to be in a cabin instead of the RV for the winter. I am going to jump forward a bit. During our stay in the cabin, I developed A-Fib and A-Flutter and had to have cardioversion. The cardioversion didn’t work. I needed an ablation. In the dead of winter with at least 2 feet of freshly fallen snow, Craig had to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. They barely got out of the driveway. My ablation worked great - this was in 2014. In the Spring of that year, the cabin started having some structural problems. One day, we were taking a drive down the road and found another wonderful campground. We talked to the owner, and they had a spot for us. This campground was much larger and had several year-round renters. We moved shortly afterward.


While at this campground, I helped market for the owners, and they gave me credit for rent. Craig once again had a heart issue and had to go to the hospital again. He had to have cardioversion and stents. While we were at the hospital, our neighbors came over and built a deck so Craig could get in and out of the camper more easily.

Craig ended up in the hospital a few days after we moved into this home. If we had not had this house, he would not have been released to me in the RV. But that was not God’s plan. We were fully restored, and Craig continues to be restored physically and is in the best health he has been in for quite some time.

You might think that the full restoration took place there, but it didn’t. We moved to North Carolina in 2015 to be closer to our son. In 2017, we decided it was time to get back into a home - one that was not on wheels.

I wish I could sit down with you and tell you about everything God has done for us. I wish I could walk you through our home and show you how the neighbors came beside us. Many of our neighbors go to the same church we go to—each of them was invitational when we first moved here.

We had been looking for a year before God brought us to Hudson, North Carolina. We looked at many homes, but the one we chose was one God wanted us to have. Once we closed on the house, we started meeting neighbors. They knew we came out of the RV and started offering some furniture and other household items. Within a couple of months, we were a fully operational household!

The restoration I am always ready to share is how God restored our Faith. How He gave us this magazine so that we could share the Good News around the world. He took two average people and showed us how much He loves us. How much He cares for each of us. How when we pray and ask for forgiveness and change our ways, He is there to give us restoration. Just think about what is to come! “But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.” (1 Peter 5:10 NKJV)

You Have The Answer Don’t Keep It To Yourself By Jo Scheidt

Warfare—The devil kicks you when you’re already down! “Fight fair!” That’s what people tell you to do. Do you know who doesn’t fight fair? Our enemy, the devil. He will wait until you have no strength or energy of your own to invade. It’s cowardly. It’s dirty. It’s NOT FAIR! I want to share with you what happened spiritually during my time in the hospital. It was the worse warfare I’ve ever experienced. I’ve never seen anything like this! In March 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two weeks later, I lost my job. After a successful surgery to remove the tumor, I developed a nasty infection in my gut, unbeknownst to me. It was at that time I started chemo treatments. Between the treatment and the infection, my system was left defenseless. I ended up in ICU for a week and a half, almost not making it to the main medical floor. I lost all function of my muscles and became very weak and couldn’t do anything for myself.

I was in the hospital for about three and a half weeks before going to rehab to get rid of the edema (I was unrecognizable) and to gain mobility again. From the moment I was admitted to the hospital, the enemy started in on my mind. He flashed grotesque pictures at me every time I closed my eyes. There was a droning in my left ear that stayed with me even when I moved to the rehab facility. That’s when I knew it wasn’t just machinery at the hospital. My dreams were psychotic. I was afraid to fall asleep! I couldn’t tell hospital or rehab staff that this was going on; they would’ve put me in a padded room and pumped me full of more drugs than I was already on! Prayer warriors went to battle on my behalf. Once the forces of darkness were identified, we could speak right to it. Little by little, my dreams became less intense. And Jesus taught me to look at Him and to say, “Jesus, I look to YOU. You are taking care of this and I don’t have to. And You are faithful!” Peace would come over me as the burden of responsibility shifted from me to Him. I had to do that many times a day but that’s when the torment became less and less. All the while, I would look at the enemy and say, “Ooooohhh—you gonna get it!” Because I KNOW when Jesus goes after a demon, he doesn’t stand a chance! I’ve always been proud of Jesus, but THIS! To see Him in action in this way...

While in rehab, I made sure to glorify God before everyone there. I told stories of this journey and how He brought me out of it. I didn’t want to stop there. Living an evangelistic life is our calling. I wanted to use this experience to propel me into a bolder existence for the Lord. It’s amazing how quickly that fervency can die off! I have to pray for boldness and for God to bring people my way to speak with about the Lord. My challenge to all of us is to pray for that boldness and to lift up our eyes to see that the fields are white for harvest (John 4:35). Let’s live passionately with the thought that everyone in our paths should know about Jesus. A friend wisely said we ALL have been given a second chance, and we need to share what we have! We have the answer to everything. How dare we keep it all to ourselves! Wrapping Our Neediness God’s Way By Tami Thorsen

Expressing our personal neediness is a vulnerable thing to do, wouldn’t you agree? Indeed, some of our neediness is far easier to express than others. (Would you carry the laundry downstairs for me? I need your help with directions to…) The “others” are hard and riskier (vulnerable) to express. (Would you help me overcome my addiction to...? I’m struggling with extreme anger and anxiety; would you help me? And so on…) Below are five reasons why we wrap our neediness in “pretty paper” and how God invites us to package our neediness His Way by living aligned to our God-given design. First off, why do we naturally tend to hide our neediness by appearing UN-needy? 1. Why? Because we fear being misunderstood, wrongly judged, rejected, and even possibly losing status. 2. Why? Because there is this pressure or expectation of needing to have it all together, have all the answers, have all the energy, have it all figured out. All on our own. 3. Why? Because the enemy of our souls wants us to follow his example of setting ourselves up as God. That’s exactly what he did long ago before being kicked out of heaven.

4. Why? Because Satan knows if we begin to believe living life is all up to us, then the True God will not be given room to show up in our lives as our Savior, our Peace, our Joy, and our Abundant Life. We will be way too busy DOing all the work (which we eventually find to be futile) and thus give no room for God to accomplish His Perfect Design of transforming work of making us into the likeness of His Son Jesus Christ. 5. Why? Because Satan also knows the “upside-down” ways of God will actually FREE US from ourselves, our striving, our shame, our hopelessness, and lovingly DRAW US to receive MORE of God, His Strength, His Joy, His Peace, His Power, His Wisdom, His Salvation day to day, to day, to day...! So what? There’s a personal, deliberate decision to be made here. It comes in the form of a choice. A change of heart. A new mindset. An exchange. A surrender of our ideals to embrace His. A new direction of taking our eyes OFF ourselves and placing them ONTO Christ. Jesus Christ makes it quite plain here: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30 MSG).

Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. 5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family. 10 “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom. 11 “Not only that—count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. 12 You can be glad when that happens—give a cheer, even!—for though they don’t like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble. God explains to us in Matthew 5:3-12 just how He designed us to “wrap” our neediness in humility, and how He promises to “unwrap” our neediness with His blessing.

What’s the point? The point is, as much as we want to hide it, deny it, or cover it up, every one of us is desperately needy. This is our God-given design. We have been packaged this way, now and for all eternity. A New Direction By Caroline Vandenbree

As we enter the New Year, we can reflect on a moment from the account of the birth of Jesus and bring that moment with us to go in a new direction. The Magi were to find the Messiah, and then they were to report to Herod where they found the Messiah, so he could worship Him, too. Herod was lying, and in a dream, the Magi were warned to return home in a different way. That is the significant detail that so many people miss in the account of the birth of Jesus. The Magi returned to their homeland using a different route. They encountered Jesus and changed their direction. If we want to have a new beginning, we must change the direction that we are going in our present to create a future with a new beginning. It takes a risk that leaves the past behind us and moves us forward with our goals intact with new habits. Quitting bad habits means being aware that we have developed bad habits in our lifetime. If we cannot recognize the bad habits, it will be difficult to start a new habit. We work on the bad habits that are the easiest to break. We do not beat ourselves up for missing a day or doing the bad habit once. We keep moving forward.

As we move in a new direction, we must develop new habits. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 12:1 NIV). It’s not an overnight change, and it takes a daily reminder. Writing down our new habit to do each day will guide us at the end of the day to see that we can accomplish a good habit. One of the steps of attaining our goals is to connect with others. We cannot live alone. The pandemic proved we need community. Community provides empowerment, encouragement, and accountability. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV). When we gather, we spur one another to do great works. Accountability creates good works. Connecting with people that we trust can build accountability. From my personal experience, I have discovered that when other people are holding me accountable to reach my goals, I not only attain the goals that I have set, but I am able to reach the next goals.

As we look at our example of the Magi who returned home taking a different route, we can observe that they had traveled together. They did not divide and conquer. They united to reach their goal of finding the Messiah. Dividing can conquer one battle. Unity wins the entire war. Once they met the Messiah, they were united in returning home in a new direction. Not one of them returned to Herod. As Christians, we can keep one another accountable with empowerment to go in our new direction until we reach our destination. Connecting with others can help us discover those who have attained the same goals we are seeking. We do not have to emulate their journey. We can learn from their mistakes and their successes. We can learn how to handle disappointments. If we do not have the experts in our journey, we become discouraged that our goals are unattainable. Along with working with people, we must create time to reach our goals. In 2015, I decided to set aside time every single day to write. The first year was a true challenge, but now it is a habit. We must make use of the time that we have. When we make time for a good habit, we eliminate the time we spent on a bad habit.

Going in a new direction is not easy, but it can be done. Going in a different direction can be scary, but if we see it as an adventure, we discover our journey guides us to reach not only our goals but also to create community so that as we work together, we bring the love and grace of Jesus to those who need Him the most. The Magi returned home in a new direction and had a new beginning. When we go in a new direction, we have a new beginning.

New Year’s in Perrysville By Chad Joseph Thieman

The sun reflects thoughtfully upon the frozen lake; where the children of Perrysville would gather to skate, as if to ponder the year it leaves behind, and its final descent through that western gate.

Chad Joseph Thieman Inspirational Author Chad Joseph Thieman has written six poetry gift books, two devotionals, and one coffee table edition of all his work called “The Poetry Treasury.” He lives with his wife Tina “Bryant” Thieman in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Chad’s writing includes faith-based, romantic, and nature themes. For tomorrow at dawn, a new year it will find, when from the east its rays again shine; Over these rolling hills blanketed in white, Until then, it waits through the long winter’s night. The houses in Perrysville give off a soft and warm glow. The rooftops and sidewalks are covered in snow. New Year’s Day is but only a few hours away, and families gather together near the fireplace to pray. They give thanks for the blessings of another year passed, and for another good year of favor, they ask. Outside, the white frosted village seems silent this eve, while the townspeople in their dwellings wait and believe. There’s an old church at the village’s north end, and raised above houses, a clock that struck ten. Not long until midnight, soon the new year will be here, and all the townspeople will gather with cheer. The moon from its perch gives off a faint and soft glow. The trees in the wood are all laden with snow.

The church bells in the distance, the only sound heard, through the cold winter air, they speak with no words; heralding in the new year, with various chimes. These bells seem to dance to their musical rhymes. For miles, they are heard from their lofty church towers, proclaiming the strike of this midnight hour. The moon and the stars watch from above, as the townspeople scurry out of their homes, many of them without hat or glove; out into snow shoveled streets, they come, some without shoes upon their feet, toasting with New Year’s cheers and friendly greets. Not for long, did the town folk tarry, only long enough to laugh and make merry. New Year in Perrysville came with a chill, and the celebrations outside were shortened. For the cold, winter air drove the townspeople in, and children danced by the fire with their closest of kin. Before too long, they will all head to bed, to awaken in time to welcome the sun and its glorious spread, as it lifts above the horizon; for with it will bring, the dawning of the new year. The fire chief was the first in town to awaken, and he raised the flag, down at the old fire station. Soon the whole town was bustling once again, from the smallest child to the oldest of men. They all gathered outside for the sun’s great arrival, for this sight would not easily be rivaled. As the sun peeked over the whitedressed hills, its rays brought some relief to the cold winter chills.

The Savior’s Love By Stephen D. Edwards

I stare back at the envelope thinking, Perhaps I can finally catch up on some bills, as my name–Antón Ferreyra–stares back at me on the line above the address. As I enter my apartment, the smell of my wife’s paella cooking on the stove diffuses through me, evoking inspiration to paint masterpieces of oil-painted canvas. “That smells more wonderful than any other time you have prepared that wondrous meal for me!” I exclaim. “Gracias, mi amor,” Lía says turning toward me with a peck on my lips. I set the envelope down on the kitchen counter in front of her and watch her eyes widen as she realizes who the sender is. She opens it to reveal the cheque from Galeria Circular for $3000 Euro with “For art by A. Ferreyra” on the memo line. She looks up at me with a wide, white-toothed smile, saying, “We must celebrate!” as she reaches for her phone to take a picture of the cheque.

We enjoy the dinner, which tastes as good as it smells with the prawns, mussels, clams, and calamari with the infusion of saffron in the rice. After dinner, we sit on the couch as she puts two liqueur glasses on the coffee table. Lía hands me the bottle of Jeréz we have been saving for an occasion such as this. I break the seal and pour the fine sherry, turning the crystal-clear glasses to sweet joy. We toast to the gallery’s recognition and sip the angelic fortified drink, savoring the moment. After a sleepless night, I rise with inspiration to paint. With a canvas on the easel, I begin with quick brushstrokes. For a moment, I am inspired to paint the scene of Lazarus’ exiting the tomb bound in linen. However, the Crucifixion urges me even more with deep conviction, as I recall the image of Jesus on the cross in front of the Church of San Bieito, having visited on the weekend, looking for purpose and meaning. The sculptured image of Jesus still burns in my mind. The cross I draw on the canvas pleases me, so I allow its grain to contrast with a blue sky dotted with whitish clouds. I get a strong urge to make the clouds darker, blotting out the clear skies. The clouds do darken, but they bear no rain yet. A patch of blackened sky appears to the east of the cross, blocking more sunlight.

I now focus my attention on the cross, painting the grain and rugged crosscuts of its wood, shimmering in the small amount of light of the sun still peeking from behind the stratospheric obstructions. A powerful urge overcomes me again, pushing me to make the glimmer of sun there is to shine only in the western sky as though a solar eclipse has begun. Below the cross I paint a crowd of people watching, some in horror and fear while others mock the Messiah, wagging their fingers.

My studio becomes bright with white light as though the sun has invaded it. I hear a voice tell me, “Well done. You now have treasure in heaven.”

Another strong urge prompts me to paint the figures of famous saints and pacifists of recent history worshiping the Savior in His passion, as I fight my need to avoid anachronisms. With them stand infamous people in deep affection for the Savior they never knew in their life on Earth.

With the emotion still enveloping me, I rush out of the studio to Lía’s side in the living room. As she looks up from the book she has in her hands, she says, “My Darling Antón! What has happened to you? Have you been talking to God?”

I begin to reason about the purpose of this painting, and in the urging, I feel to move my brush. I cannot explain the inspiration of the gruesome scene, but the crowd of notorious and famous people outnumbers the people of First Century Jerusalem at the foot of the cross, watching on in rapturous attention and dismay. There is a space left for me to paint another figure on the righthand side of the cross. It takes me a while to figure out who to paint there, but another strong urging has me painting myself there. Having set the scene, I move on to paint the main subject of the painting on that tree—Jesus—naked except for the crown of thorns restored to his head after it dropped when the Roman soldiers had nailed his wrists and feet into the wood. Each brushstroke reveals more detail in the slump of His body, His legs giving way to the weight of His torso and tired leg muscles testify to His struggle to lift Himself to breathe. The brush continues to expose more features of the Savior’s face, ragged and bloody from the scourging and flogging ordered by Pontius Pilate. The paint leaves the eyes sunk in a sadness that no one has ever known, even until now. His mouth open as though speaking, perhaps exclaiming, “Father, Father, why have You forsaken me?” or that last breath saying, “It is finished.”

I wonder whose voice has said these words but cannot imagine that it could come from anyone else than Jesus Himself, whom I have been painting. I step back to take the art in as my heart swims in emotion I cannot explain. I sense something has changed about me but cannot identify it yet.

“No, my dear. Let me show you,” as I wave my hand toward the studio. As Lía takes in the painting, I say, “Jesus has been talking to me. For the first time, I believe He is the Savior I have been seeking!”
