WELCOME Thank you for reading the latest edition of Crain’s MBA Guide from Crain’s Content Studio. In addition to a complete directory of more than 30 Chicago-area MBA programs, our eight sponsoring schools provide in-depth information on their MBA programs and other graduate business degree offerings. In this year’s main feature, Jane Adler explores one of the fastest-growing trends in MBA programs: online-only and hybrid (in-person and online) MBA degree options. Two key facts pop out of the story. One, employers now tend to accept online degree credentials without a second thought. And two, the online and hybrid programs are every bit as rigorous as the traditional on-campus-only model. We are grateful to the fine institutions who detail their MBA offerings in this issue: Chicago State University, Concordia University Chicago, DePaul University, Dominican University, Elmhurst College, Loyola University Chicago, Marquette University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Please use these listings for comparison, and to gain a deeper understanding of the many fine MBA programs available in the Midwest. If you are an advertiser looking to reach readers completing the MBA program selection process, please contact Account Executive Courtney Rush at 312-550-6249 or crush@crain.com to learn more about tapping into that audience via Crain’s MBA Guide.

MBA Programs Go Digital More Chicago-area universities are creating online-only and hybrid options that give busy executives the flexibility they need

A

busy consultant who often travels and has three young children, Jens Conzen didn’t have time to attend the on-campus classes he would need to earn an MBA degree. Rather than pass on this prime opportunity for professional development and career advancement, Conzen opted for an MBA program at Elmhurst College that’s mostly online. He can log in whenever it’s convenient, even when he’s on the road or after his kids go to bed. “It’s more efficient,” says Conzen, who admits it took some time to get used to the format. “The online program gives me flexibility.” Still a prized business credential, MBA degrees are now readily available online. Colleges and universities offer a variety of options, including online-only programs and hybrid programs that combine traditional classroom work and remote learning. Several factors account for the growth in online MBA degrees. Many students are midcareer and work full time. They’re busy and like the flexibility of classes that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. As enrollments in traditional in-class MBA programs have declined, schools are rethinking their approach. Online delivery of course content helps schools boost enrollment and reach students well beyond campus boundaries. Technology has improved, too. Online classes now feature virtual team projects and discussions. “We are using technology to reach students across the globe,” says Arshad Saiyed, assistant dean, online programs, Gies College of Business, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The school launched its online MBA—the iMBA—in January 2016. The program has grown quickly. It started with 114 students and now has 2,500 students. About a quarter live in Illinois. The others are from 46 states and several countries. The program takes two to three years to complete and costs about $22,000. “We offer a high-quality, affordable program,” Saiyed says.

Online MBA programs vary in length and cost. But students can expect to pay about the same, or somewhat less, than they would for a traditional in-person experience, from about $20,000 to more than $100,000. Chicago State University’s new MBA program, which includes an online component, costs about $21,000 for Illinois residents. Schools are working to shorten the length of programs. Busy executives don’t want to spend several years earning a degree. DePaul University is redesigning its curriculum so an MBA can be completed in 15 months instead of two years. Another change: Some online MBA programs no longer require applicants to take the GMAT exam.

HYBRIDS ARE POPULAR

Some programs offer classes only online. But many have a hybrid format, offering virtual classes along with an in-person component. In addition to his online classes, student Conzen will attend several “boot camp” sessions on campus. “It’s a good compromise and networking opportunity,” he says. Last year, Marquette University launched an online-only MBA program. It also offers traditional in-person and executive hybrid-style MBA programs. “Students can choose what they want,” says Jeanne Simmons, associate dean, Graduate School of Management, Marquette University, Milwaukee. She adds that fewer face-to-face classes are being offered because of the popularity of the online offerings. At Dominican University, River Forest, students can choose all online or face-to-face classes. But most mix and match, completing some classes in person and some online.

and pharmaceutical management. The entrepreneurship track emphasizes how to raise venture capital, according to Sabrina Land, director of marketing and media relations, Chicago State University. “There’s a big gap especially for minorities and women to access capital, so we focus on that.” Next fall, Loyola University Chicago will launch a “Next Generation” MBA. It will be taught with a combination of in-person and online classes. Employers and students are looking for knowledge beyond the technical skills provided in more traditional MBA programs, according to Kevin Stevens, dean, Quinlan School of Business, Loyola University Chicago. The new program will focus on data-driven decision making, along with leadership, communication and teamwork expertise. “We are building skills to take our students to the next level,” he says. Loyola also offers non-degree certificate programs online. Next fall, it plans to launch a global human resources certificate in partnership with schools in Spain and Colombia. Students will convene online and spend a week in each country. Two years ago, Concordia University Chicago introduced a doctorate in business administration. Most of the students in the program take the classes online. “It’s a popular program,” says Claudia Santin, dean of the college of business, Concordia. The school’s campus is in River Forest. Other area schools with online and hybrid MBA options include Aurora University, Benedictine University, Concordia University of Chicago, DeVry University, Governors State University, Lewis University, National Louis University, Purdue University Northwest and the University of Illinois at Chicago. As the number of such programs grows, employer acceptance of online MBA degrees is becoming common. In fact, employers might not even know if a degree was competed online unless they ask, as many school

“Online classes are just as challenging as in-person ones. There’s just as much work.” - Kelly

Cunningham, MBA program director, Elmhurst College

A typical semester might include one in-person class for 16 weeks and two online classes, each for eight weeks. “We call it creative scheduling,” says Kathleen Odell, associate dean, Brennan School of Business, Dominican University. “It makes it easier for students to finish faster.” Online content at Dominican generally doesn’t differ from in-person coursework. The same instructors typically teach online and in person. “Everything is the same,” Odell says. Most online classes are asynchronous. Students can access the material when they want. A typical online MBA class at Elmhurst College meets for eight weeks. Assignments are turned in at the end of each week. The professor may host a weekly webinar that students can attend in real time or access later. “My philosophy is to meet the needs of the students,” says Kelly Cunningham, MBA program director, associate professor of business, Elmhurst College. Some face-to-face classes are now taught virtually, too. MBA students at DePaul University attend classes and participate in real time using Zoom video conferencing. “It’s fantastic,” says Bob Rubin, professor of management, associate dean for graduate and professional education, Driehaus College of Business and Kellstadt Graduate School of Business, DePaul University. DePaul offers a hybrid MBA program. Rubin emphasizes the importance of maintaining DePaul’s practical, high-touch approach. Students in the weekend hybrid MBA program meet in person every other Saturday. Technology connects students in other ways. Many MBA programs use the Blackboard learning system where students upload assignments and check their progress. Group project meetings are held online. Professors at Marquette University even hold office hours online.

"

transcripts don’t differentiate between online and in-person programs. “Companies accept online degrees,” Marquette’s Simmons says. The reputation of the school granting the degree is what’s important, she adds. Educators agree that earning a degree online, or mostly online, takes discipline. Many classes aren’t held at a specific time. Older students, those typically in MBA programs, may not be familiar with remote learning systems. “Online students will have deliverables,” Simmons says. There are deadlines for assignments, and students are expected to log in for lectures and discussions. Cunningham at Elmhurst College adds, “Online classes are just as challenging as in-person ones. There’s just as much work.” Jessica Peterson is about to finish the MBA program at Loyola. Most of the classes have been online. That was a big help when she moved to Madison two years ago for work and was able to easily continue her studies. “You have to stay organized, absolutely,” she says. “It’s very challenging.” But it’s been worth it. The pursuit of an MBA helped her obtain a COO position. “I’ve moved to the next level,” she says.

NEW OPTIONS

Local schools are introducing new programs. Chicago State University launched a hybrid MBA program this fall. The campus is on the southeast side of the city, a convenient South Chicago location for students who live in the area and in Northwest Indiana. MBA classes meet on Friday evenings and Saturdays, and some of the courses are online. Students can attend part- or full-time. The two-year program offers traditional areas of specialization, as well as concentrations in entrepreneurship, healthcare, education leadership
