ew York and Los Angeles may be revered for their variety of top-tier experiences, but many hospitality and event leaders believe Chicago takes the lead for business meetings. “Chicago stands out as a premier meeting destination, boasting iconic and award-winning restaurants that blend sophisticated spaces with warm hospitality, and whose expertise lies in producing unique, personalized events,” said Haley Norman, event sales director for DineAmic Hospitality. Not only does Chicago rival the coastal giants, but it offers a more relaxed atmosphere primed for creating community, connection and standout events.
It’s a unique trait tough to find in large cities, but Chicago makes a big city feel intimately small. Then, of course, there's the unmatched scenery and culture. “Chicago is filled with museums and events, dynamic theater, live music clubs showcasing everything from blues to rock, plus two scenic waterfronts bordered by parks and sandy beaches,” said Kristi Widgery, director of events experience at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. These attributes, among many others, are why Chicago continues to shine as one of the go-to locations for company meetings. Plus, “being centrally-located is
There’s the small-town feel nestled within a sprawling and modern metropolis, but Chicago’s celebrated history is another key draw for business leaders near and far when it comes to corporate events, company get-togethers and client outings. “Having a 299-seat theater, an exclusive grand main event space, private outdoor park space in the heart of Lincoln Park and one-ofa-kind exhibitions help us connect visitors locally and from all over the world to the city of Chicago and its history,” said Lorelei Kroulaidis, special events director at the Chicago History Museum. Little touches, like incorporating a taste of Chicago into the food and beverage experiences offered at the Chicago History Museum and beyond, further build that special connection for guests. “We even had a Malort tasting station to truly give attendees a [real] Chicago experience,” Kroulaidis explained of a recent event that drew 1,200 attendees from all over the world. When you’re going from meeting to meeting, it’s these small efforts
that make Chicago events memorable. “Often, meeting attendees go to multiple events throughout the year, so small, personalized touches go a long way,” said Catie Walsh, director of sales and marketing at Waldorf Astoria Chicago. Still, depending on where in Chicago your event is held, guests can feel confident in having a new experience each and every time. “Chicago is a world-class city where each neighborhood is bursting with its own unique culture, cuisine, architecture and landmarks,” Walsh explained. The Waldorf Astoria Chicago, for example, is uniquely situated to provide an intimate meeting experience within the hotel but is also located in the heart of the Gold Coast, which Walsh said is the ideal epicenter to explore the city when your meetings are over. This year, Chicago hospitality and event leaders are also seeing an uptick in clients seeking out social connections at events, rather than traditional seated dinners that were the norm the past few years. “Chef-driven experiences, networking receptions and panel discussions have been trending popularly over the past year,” Larson said.
With those traditional (and sometimes uneventful) business dinners taking a back seat, interactive events have also given staff an incredible opportunity to “exercise their creativity and be more involved with the guest experience,” Larson noted. Emily Dreckshage, event sales manager at upscale Chicago steakhouse Maple & Ash, said few cities in the U.S. have as diverse accommodations and vibrant cultural scenes as Chicago, which stands out as a melting pot of one-of-a-kind experiences. It’s why locals and visitors alike continue to choose Chicago time and time again for all of their business meeting needs, even as those meetings take on a more social approach. “It’s an ideal place for networking,” she said of Chicago. “As a culinary destination that caters to varied palettes and elevates the overall meeting experience, attendees leave with not only business connections but unforgettable memories as well.”
