A matter of life By Max Towers This book is about a man on the way home who finds an abandoned and crumbled down church in the middle of the woods. Why not go inside!

Wearily walking home, after a long and hard day at work. The rain tumbles down on me and a sudden flash of light lights up the sky followed by a rumble in the distance. I took the short cut through the old and mysterious woods. The trees have green and damp moss covering them. The trees arched over the top of me and in front of me like vines. Under my feet I felt the crunching and crackling of the old damp leaves. The rain feel on me like snowflakes because all the vines soaked up the rain drops.

I can see the faint outline of the old and decaying church, in the distance. No longer used, so the story goes. Rumor has it that many years ago the priest attempted to save someone from death, failed, but he still tries this very day. I carry on walking until I reach the entrance of the grave yard. The thunder rumbles again and sounds louder. One, two, three, four, the lightening splits the sky. The storm is getting closer. The gothic arch lights up and the lantern hanging from the very top of the arch swings as the wind blows. As the wind gets stronger the lantern falls and smashes onto the ground with a crash.

This sound made me glance over there. The glass is scattered all over the ground. The arch was drawing me in. The two old gargoyles that are decayed and green, sitting on top of the arch stared at me. It felt they were looking into my soul. As I hesitantly walked towards it the doors looked bigger, they were black and round. I looked up and the doors were double my size. I could hear a daunting tune being played inside. The lightning struck once again and the thunder followed. I was attracted to the music so I walked in. The noise was ten times louder and defend me. The church was old and moist everything inside was rewind. The benches broken, the windows smashed and the floor cover in a layer of dust. There were no lights inside just candles around the outside. The door slammed behind me, with a crash and suddenly all the candles went out in rows. This is creepy I thought. But who is playing the music? The only light entering the church was from the windows which the moonlight shone through the windows above me. The windows above me were round so there are little circle on the ground that I followed.

I turned the corner and in front of me was the dreaded priest. He was playing the organ with candles surrounding him. Crash!!! Something behind me was struck by lightning. It fell to the ground. I carried on walking. I knew something was not right. The organ playing got louder and louder. Crash!! Something had fallen on to the church. It sliced through the church landing just behind me. It was a huge tree. I ran straight to the organ to tell the priest. I was next to him and I was shouting at him he did nothing. He turned and looked at me as if he was a mechanical robot, and he pressed a button. At first it did nothing. We were stationery, but we started to spin around. When we slowly turned around we arrived in a dark cave with two candles above the two doors. There were two doors in front of me they were wooden, old and had been work away with crack and dents scattered on them. The wood was wet and loose. The priest said to me and in a low voice “pick one of these doors, One is for freedom and the other Is to be the next sacrifice to god.

I was speechless what kind of a person would do this to someone. I was pressured to pic one. It was a fifty fifty choice. i didn’t knew what one to pick. My mind switched every two seconds. What door to pic? I had to decide so I chose what my gut said so I went for the right door. I walked forward to grab the door handle, but i couldn’t find the door handle because my hand shook so much. I eventually grasped the door handle. With a terror in my step and my heart beat as fast as a cheater running. I carried on walking. I looked straight ahead and it was a long tunnel with two candles at the end. To me it looked like a dead end. Carefully I carried on walking watching every step I took. one block of stone didn’t feel right, and it wasn’t!

Ahhhhh! i fell straight down. i was petrified i didn’t know what was going on. My heart felt like it was pounding out my body. Without opening my eyes or thinking I am outside. Without looking back a scurried home. through the woods but i’m never coming that way again. Maybe the Rumor was true after all?
