St Teresa's Prep Weekly bulletin 15 November 2024

Page 1

Dear Parents,

Choose Respect: the theme for this year’s Anti-bullying Week campaign was introduced in my assembly on Monday where we also considered the words of Proverbs 26: 20 – the power of a fire lies in its fuelling. The best way to prevent quarrelling, arguing or disagreements – don’t throw wood on the fire. Stop being the whisperer.

Later that Monday morning, was our joint Remembrance Day Service with the Senior School. A poignant reminder of those who sacrificed all for our freedom mixed with the gratefulness we feel for life, beautifully presented with the trumpets playing from the rear of Mairlot, the poem read aloud and the two minutes of silence remember, to reflect.

On Tuesday our Year 6 girls sat their Entrance Examinations for the Senior School, always a proud day for our staff to see them walking with heads held high into the exam hall. The girls represented themselves amazingly on the day and did you all proud, getting many comments from Senior Staff about their maturity, excellent behaviour and aplomb. Well done, girls. And can I take this opportunity to thank our Prep School teachers and TAs for ALL the work they have done with the girls over the years to prepare them for this moment.

Thank you to those Year 4 and Year 5 parents who attended our Location Briefing on Wednesday evening, your enthusiasm for the proposed relocation to John Bosco was welcome and we look forward to the opportunities it will afford the Prep School over the next academic year.

Our week culminated with Odd Socks Day celebrating everyone is different and what an array of socks were on display from staff and pupils – from socks that hold hands, to brightly striped stockings, the range was dazzling. What a way to finish a week of celebrating respecting each other. Next week: Maths week!

“Follow the three R’s: Respect for self. Respect for others. Responsibility for all your actions.” Dalai Lama XIV

Before I let you read the rest of the Bulletin this week, we bid a fond farewell (for the time-being) to Mrs Hitchman who leaves on her maternity today. We wish her a beautiful delivery and joy-filled first months with her new arrival. We look forward to hearing the news of is it a boy or a girl in the weeks to come.

Have a peaceful weekend,

Gareth Tindall

Pastoral Pause

How has your New Ways November | Action for Happiness been this week?

I enjoyed my new cycle route home following the governor’s meeting at Cranmore on Tuesday – I was delighted and slightly surprised to see my first festive lights of the season on an Effingham property AND I am looking forward to spoiling myself on Sunday with ‘Try a new way to practice self-care and be kind to yourself’.

Keep looking for New Ways to live your life to the full (John 10:10) during the remainder of this month!

God Bless You all, Gareth Tindall

Key Dates 2024 - 25

As outlined in the Parent Handbook, and reiterated at the Parent Welcome Reception, there are three key dates in the school calendar that are compulsory for all the girls to attend. This is to help them understand the importance of team work and collaborative responsibility as these are events where they are all involved and need to support each other.

These dates are as follows:

Christmas Service, Thursday 5th December, 18.30 to 19.30

Spring Concert, Thursday 13th March, 18.30 to 19.30

Prep School Prize Giving, Thursday 3rd July, 19.00 to 20.00

We would be grateful if you could keep these dates free so that all girls can be present at these important community events.

Year 5 and 6 Art Club have enjoyed making autumn wreaths. They took rubbings of leaves, drew mushrooms and painted a range of autumnal colours to create an array of autumnal elements. They looked fabulous!

VI Form Anti-Bullying Assembly

On Tuesday our Sixth Form Prefects led our topic assembly using the Anti-Bullying Alliances theme of ‘Choose Respect’. They discussed what bullying is, what respect means and who in the school the girls know they can talk to if they have any worries. The girls were reminded to use their hand to name people they can talk to counting the names off per finger. Then our Senior School girls informed the Prep pupils that they would be back on Friday lunch break to play games with the girls! They were so excited. In the absence of our Year 6 pupils who were sitting their Entrance Exams, a huge thanks goes to our Year 4KC chaplaincy prefect, Monica, for stepping in and lighting the assembly candle and leading us in prayer. The VI Form prefect team also distributed the prizes from the previous Eco assembly to our worthy winners: Penny, Maddy and Sophia.

Year 5

As part of their learning on Remembrance Day, Year 5 designed and created their own soldiers. They studied various uniforms and decided what they wanted their soldier to look like. Some girls decided on using camouflage and some chose the King's guards, as inspiration. They finished their characters with hair and an expressive face.

LETTER FROM CRANLEIGH FOOD BANK

We have received a letter from Cranleigh food bank thanking our school community for their generous donations from the harvest festival!

Dear Staff, Parents and Children,

On behalf of the volunteers who run the Cranleigh Food Bank, I would like to thank you so much for sending your harvest festival produce to Cranleigh Food Bank. There was a wonderful quantity, quite a lot of which was re-distributed to those in need of food last Friday.

For the past 4 months we have been using our cash reserves to buy in food as the donations we receive locally through the Sainsbury’s and Co-op boxes have nowhere near kept up with the requests received.

Now that we have yours and other harvest donations we will have a good amount in store to see us through the next few months.

Unfortunately, although we are receiving fewer requests than during and just after the pandemic, we are still receiving many more requests than prior to it.

In the year September 23 to August 24 we gave out over 1,000 parcels of food, of varying sizes depending on how many people are in the family. Each parcel feeds a family for 4-5 days. That is a lot of food!

So please pass on our heartfelt thanks to all your students, parents and staff who donated and then delivered the food to us.

Yours sincerely,

Hockey

The U11's played in the annual UKSA tournament in Burgess Hill on Friday last week. The standard was really high and the team learned a lot in each match. Our basics and our pace of play continuously improved and we started to score more goals as we progressed into the plate competition. The team won their quarter final against Skipper's Hill in a thrilling 1-0 victory on shuffles. Poppy E was excellent in goal, forcing errors from their strikers and Eva C scored a great goal. Unfortunately, we lost the semi final against Hazelwood, however, the girls were in high spirits after their performance, and they all improved throughout the day. Well played all!

The U10 girls had an epic day packed full of hockey at the UKSA schools hockey tournament! The A team started the day very strong winning all but one of their pool games, leaving the team in 2nd place overall in their pool at the end of the morning. Going into the semi final the girls were equal parts eager and nervous! In the semi final, Brambletye were relentless in attack and putting our defenders and goalkeeper under pressure. However, the team remained composed throughout the game and worked hard to win the ball. Unfortunately, the U10A's finished the semi final with a 3-0 loss. We were exceptionally proud of the U10A team they listened well to feedback from their coaches and made massive progress throughout all the games they played! Well done to the U10A team!!

Bible Reading

On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine the best of meats and the finest of wines. On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces.

Isaiah 25:6-9

Reflection

This week we focus on Remembrance. We remember and give thanks all those who have sacrificed their lives defending the freedoms we enjoy. We recognise the cost that many have paid for our own freedom. In this month let us pray for our loved ones who have loved and lost.

Prayer

Let us pray for all those who have died, especially those from the families of our own school community Lord, judge them kindly, welcome them into your presence, and give them peace.

“May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.”

St Teresa of Lisieux

We hope that you have had a good week!
