17 MARCH 2025

Message from the Head of Prep

Congratulations to our Under 11 football team on being crowned champions in the National Finals at the weekend, beating Millfield on penalties in the final. The standard of competition at this level is incredibly high so to secure a national title is an amazing achievement. Well done to the boys involved and thank you to the staff and families who supported them.

We played host to another fiercely contested competition over the weekend, where teams from the local area came to do battle against one another to see who would prevail. It was clear from the outset that a number of teams had devoted time to preparing for this special event. In a nail-bitingly close finish, a tie-break was needed to decide the eventual winners. I hope that everyone has now recovered from the exertions of this year’s CPA Quiz and they are already formulating their plans for next year. We are very grateful to the team behind the organisation of this fantastic evening.

Keeping with the competitive theme, the Auditorium was the venue for this week’s Upper Prep House Music Competition where the value of community was explored through song. Each House performed brilliantly and our visiting judge was tasked with the unenviable job of picking a winner. Congratulations to Radford House on their triumph this year with their thoughtful rendition of ‘Sing’ by Gary Barlow.

Mr Heaver

Year 5 Trip to PGL

Year 5 enjoyed a marvellous trip to PGL Hailsham and hail, indeed, it did! However, this didn’t dampen their adventurous spirit or enthusiasm. The more agile squirrels among them scaled the towering climbing equipment with ease. Among the group were some highly skilled archers who could have given Robin Hood a challenge. The Giant Swing evoked that familiar sinking feeling of the Croc Drop at Chessington. They returned home exhausted but proud, having succeeded in their mission to "run and live with more fire."

House Music

The Upper Prep pupils all came together for a brilliant afternoon of camaraderie, community and competition for the annual House Music event on Monday. All houses performed brilliantly and the boys should be very proud of their achievement. Bravo to this year's winner, Radford, for their performance of ‘Sing’ by Gary Barlow. Our adjudicator was prog rock frontwoman and educator, Hayley Griffiths, and we are very grateful to her for her insightful comments and feedback.

Thank you to Miss Evans, Mr Harris, Mr Heaver and all house staff for their efforts in preparing the event.

Visit from Glenesk School

On Thursday 13th March we welcomed Years 1 and 2 from Glenesk School as they joined us for an afternoon of singing and music-making. Our joint concert, Together in Harmony, featured performances from 2NS and 2JC from Cranmore alongside our guests from Glenesk. We enjoyed singing together and exploring improvisation on our recorders. Cranmore Year 2 Recorders also debuted our original composition, Piccadilly Circus, written by Miss Evans and Year 2. Our concert ended with a partner song, Swing Low Sweet Chariot/Oh When The Saints Go Marching In, with plenty of participation from our audience! It was a wonderful afternoon and we look forward to a return visit from Glenesk next year.

Thank you to Miss Evans, Mrs Carpenter and Mrs Stefano for their efforts in preparing for this event.

Reception have been working extremely hard in Maths this term, learning about the composition of numbers to 20 and using concrete objects to help them. Miss Hurl and Mrs Prothero have been very impressed with the children's teamwork and resilience when they might not get the answer right!

National Champions!

On Sunday 16th March, the U11A Football team travelled to Millfield Prep for the U11 IAPS National Football Finals. The team qualified back in October, but the original finals date was postponed due to bad weather. After winning the group stage with three wins and a draw, Cranmore topped the group with 10 points and progressed into the quarter finals against Lambrook school. After a tense game, the score was poised at 0-0. There was no change after 4 minutes of golden goal, so the dreaded penalty shootout loomed. However, three fantastic penalties from Cranmore and one brilliant save saw Cranmore progress to the semi-final. A similar story here, where we played a local school, Parkside. After 18 minutes of no goals scored, it was back to penalties. Confidence was high and rightly so, as another 100% record from the spot and another fine save saw Cranmore progress into the National Final.

We were matched up against the hosts, Millfield Prep, a strong and physical team. The Cranmore boys played with grit and determination and although they dominated the game, still couldn't find that decisive goal. So, a third penalty shootout was required. Once again, three perfect penalties from Cranmore and a fine save, saw Cranmore win the match and they were crowned as U11 IAPS National Champions for the first time in the school's history! This was a huge achievement for the boys and for everyone involved.

I would like to pass on my heartfelt thanks to Mr Down for his time and effort in taking the team this season. The boys represented the school with distinction on the day, showing great sportsmanship throughout, shaking hands with our opponents before celebrating their success in all three of the knockout matches.

Well done, boys - you have made history!

On Saturday morning, our U11B & U11C hockey teams were in action against Danes Hill. Both pitches saw some great hockey from Cranmore with the results being 5-1 and 5-2 respectively. The same morning, our U10 rugby team played in the Donhead 7s. The players put on a great display - see results below:

Donhead: won 25 - 10

RGS Guildford: won 25 - 5

Twickenham Prep: won 20 - 10

Old Wimbledonians RFC: won 35 - 10

Thomas’ Fulham: 5-2 in the final game, sealing a great way to end the U10 rugby season!

More hockey matches have taken place against Feltonfleet, Hoe Bridge and Western Green. On Tuesday, pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 represented Cranmore at the Danes Hill Cross-Country. The U9s finished 9th from 24 schools and the U11s finished 10th out of 25 schools. Good luck to our U10 hockey teams playing against Danes Hill and those pupils in the National Biathlon Finals tomorrow.

Swimming

On Saturday evening eight pupils from Years 5 and 6 took part in the English Schools Primary Relay Gala at Guildford Spectrum. We took two teams, and they took part in both the Medley and the Freestyle relay events, with one team finishing 4th in the Medley and 5th in the Freestyle. There were some great swims with PB’s achieved by the boys involved. Well done.

Hodgson,

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A Reading from the Gospel of John

None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Reflection

Let us pause and remember that Lent is a period of sanctification, an old fashioned word that means to be put aside or made holy. This Lent and as we approach Easter, I encourage you all to reflect on your life and to ask yourself is there something you can give up or something you can take up that will help you become the best that you can be. Blessed Carlo Acutis, who is to be canonised this April, understood the pressures we all feel but he also recognised that only in Jesus can our hearts find the peace we so desperately seek.

Prayer

Let us pray

God our Father, we give thanks for the season of Lent.

Give us the honesty to recognise what we need to change in our lives.

Help us to make choices in our lives that make space for You.

And guide us to become the good person you created us to be.

We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

"Happiness is to look to God, sadness is to look to oneself". Blessed Carlo Acutis
