20 SEPTEMBER 2021 Message from the Headmaster It has been a week of firsts. Our first class assemblies of the year took place on Monday and Wednesday. 7CE started off the week looking ahead to the European Day of Languages this Sunday. Thank you to 3RF pupils for their presentation on resilience, having goals and trust, characteristics that are important for all of us both in and out of school. It was also the first assembly when nursery pupils attended. Congratulations to the newly elected Lower Prep School Council representatives who enthusiastically held their first meeting this week. I look forward to hearing their ideas and suggestions going forward. Last weekend our ski squad started their season by taking part in the ESSKIA regional qualifiers. Indications are that the U11A squad will be through to the next round in Norwich and we eagerly await the results of the U14 category. Cranmore is hosting the first swimming gala of the term today. On Saturday, the Cranmore U8 invitational football festival and U10 football tournament will take place. We will be welcoming teams from eight schools. Good luck to all our pupils. Pupils in the Upper Prep and Senior School have been taking part in language quizzes throughout the week with results to be announced on Tuesday. Year 7 pupils attended a study skills session covering dynamic reading and mind mapping. Year 6 pupils who are interested in applying for an Art Scholarship have the opportunity to attend a weekly preparation class each Thursday. Year 8 mathematicians have been exploring Pythagoras’ Theorem with the additional challenge of considering Fermat’s Last Theorem. Having had a busy week at School, I hope the pupils have a well-earned rest with their families and friends this weekend. Mr Everitt

A very busy week in Lower Prep!

This week, Year 1 carried out a tasting experiment: investigating different flavours of crisps! They also enjoyed playing in the mud kitchen at Forest School.

Year 2 have enjoyed working together to build their own castles.

Year 3 Investigate Friction Year 3 enjoyed experimenting with different surfaces and predicting which surface would have the most friction.

Nursery children learn about keeping safe at Forest School. At Forest School this week the children learnt all about fire safety. We prepared a fire and roasted crumpets for the children to enjoy with jam for their snack. The children used different coloured paint and rolled the conkers in it to create their colourful pictures. An imaginary Superhero game amongst the trees was great fun and seeing how high they could climb the ‘climbing tree’ was a real challenge! Mrs Luke, Head of Nursery

Lower Prep School Council ready for action! We are very proud to announce our first elected Lower Prep School Council Members! The children were chosen by their classmates to represent and be the pupil voice for their classes. They are very excited about having their first meeting on Wednesday with Mrs Carpenter and discussing the things that they feel could make a difference for our Lower Prep School.

Miss Gallop, Head of Lower Prep Reception – Elizabeth C and Lucinda G Year 1 – Teddy G and Imogen H Year 2 – Sebastian B and Jesse C Year 3 – Jesse K and James B

Time for Music in Reception Reception have been really enjoying their music lessons with Mrs Thornton. They have been singing Nursery Rhymes, practicing songs for their Grandparents and learning to play percussion instruments with timing and rhythm. Mrs Thornton is very proud of their start to Cranmore and can see some budding musicians in the making! Well done, Reception! Mrs Green and Mrs Prothero, Reception

Pianist dazzles in Assembly! Congratulations to Austin B who gave an excellent performance on the piano during assembly and was awarded a Pupil Distinction.

Study Skills Workshop for Year 7

It isn’t enough that students simply understand what they need to do in their study: the challenge is getting students to use and apply the skills they learn. This is why we decided to bring an external company to support Cranmore students in this endeavour. The focus was on how to take notes efficiently albeit without compromising on detail. The students were also introduced to the concept of selective reading, where they focus on identifying key words or phrases rather than the whole text. The presenter struck exactly the right balance with our students and the response from them has been overwhelmingly positive.

Mr Cross, Head of Year 7
