Henry was lucky enough to meet Daley Thompson on a recent visit to Brighton College. Daley Thompson was there assessing future pupils for the Daley Thompson Rugby Scholarship award.
Dear Parents We were very fortunate with the weather last Saturday when we hosted the Surrey Rugby Festival. It was wonderful to see so many teams in action on the Henderson Playing Fields. I wish to thank everyone involved who made the day such a success, particularly Mr O’Brien and the Sports Staff. The following day our rowers were busy on the river and you can read a more detailed account in this edition. Our celebrations for Book Day were great fun and, as ever, there were some remarkable costumes on show. Our Senior Chamber Choir enjoyed their visit to the Royal Festival Hall and they will have fond memories of performing in such a distinguished venue. I was delighted to see so many of you on Tuesday at our Future Schools Evening, it is always a good opportunity to gain an insight into the differences between a variety of senior schools. We are very much looking forward to tomorrow evening when the CPA shall be hosting our black-tie ball, this is sure to be a marvellous occasion. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

WORLD BOOK DAY!

To mark World Book Day we decided to collect books for the Delight charity, which gives books to children in the area who do not have any books of their own. As you can see we have had a fantastic response, with piles of lovely books in excellent condition, which I’m sure will be treasured by their new owners. Just having a quick read before we pass them on!

Out in all weathers! On Thursday the Pre-Nursery went out for a walk. It had been raining but that just added to the fun! The children all had their waterproof clothing on as well as their wellies so had lots of fun splashing in the puddles. Over at Forest School the children enjoyed using ropes to make swings and rope ladders to balance along. It is not as easy as it looks! We enjoyed having the mummies in on Thursday afternoon to see the artwork the children had created, as well as listening to the children’s favourite songs. Next Tuesday is our grand Forest School Easter Egg Hunt and we have invited parents of Nursery children to join us. If you are planning to come along, please make sure you have let us know so we have enough hot cross buns to toast on the fire. Cheeping has begun inside the eggs! The children were very excited to see a little crack in one of the eggs earlier today. You can check on the hatching progress on the interactive white boards around the school, courtesy of the webcam Mr Peach has set up for us.

Cranmore Sings at the Royal Festival Hall!
Barnardo’s National Choral Competition Final On Monday 12 March, 45 excited members of the Senior Chamber Choir accompanied by Miss Fourie, Mr Harris, Mr Hinds, Mrs Trumble and Mr Martin travelled to London for the final of the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition at the Royal Festival Hall. The choir had a fantastic competition performance in the morning followed by some well -deserved time off. Despite the wet weather, in true British fashion, we still managed to enjoy some ice cream and to have a walk along the Thames before returning to the stage in the evening for another performance. The choir performed in front of a very appreciative audience and it was a truly memorable experience for all involved. There was not a dry eye left in the auditorium at the end of the night as the children all performed an arrangement of “You’ll never walk alone.” Even though we didn’t bring back any silverware on this occasion, we are incredibly proud of our pupils and all they’ve achieved in the last few weeks.

The 6th Form have enjoyed learning a new French song "Mercy-Merci", which is the song in the competition for the Eurovision Song contest 2018 in May. They recognised most of the vocabulary studied in class and could sing along with the group Monsieur Madame in their French lesson.
Some of the ICT Leaders have been taking apart a Lego racing car and attaching sensors and motors to make it into an autonomous driverless car. At the moment they have been able to control it through Bluetooth and an I-pad or Surface tablet. The next step is to programme the sensors to enable it to drive through a maze and round a racetrack. The car does not drive very fast so the leaders will also be looking at changing the spur and pinion cogs. Because of the tight space available in the car, we may end up designing and 3D printing some new cogs to fit the now cramped engine bay.

Maths Challenge Day The Maths department hosted a puzzle challenge day on Monday 5th of March, for all of the senior department students. The day consisted of four programmes with up to sixty students in each session, working in groups of six students, with each programme using large 3D team puzzles and challenges. The students encountered a variety of challenges, which required collaborative learning skills with careful strategic planning in order to find a solution. The students persevered, using teamwork skills to overcome problems, by approaching them from different perspectives. Once the puzzle was solved, the team was given another to complete. At the end of the day, the students got the opportunity to purchase some puzzles from the puzzle shop. Here is some feedback from the students about the challenge day: “It was fun trying to figure out the puzzles and seeing the students’ strengths”; “It was great doing maths puzzles in a team”; “It was great for thinking skills, testing our brains”. A fun day was had by all. Miss Fagan

Surrey Rugby Junior Schools Festival On Saturday 10th March, Cranmore hosted the Surrey Rugby Junior Schools Festival for the third year in a row. Unfortunately, due to waterlogged pitches on the school side of the road, the Under 9 event had to be cancelled. The Henderson Fields across the bridge managed to remain playable and the grounds looked superb. With 40 teams, 100 matches and over 400 players in attendance, this is one of the biggest events around and the Cranmore teams thrived in the atmosphere created. The Cranmore Under 10's were clinical in winning each of their group games before bringing the event to a close with a fantastic battle against Hampton, who remained unbeaten throughout the day. There were other fine performances from KCJS and Donhead in this age group. The Under 11's event was closely fought and many of the games were drawn. Hampton, Aldro and Cranmore were joint winners of their group and each went on to win their remaining allocated fixture. Danes Hill were unbeaten throughout and King's House were only beaten in their last fixture of the day. A big thank you to all the teams, staff, parents and helpers who played, supported and assisted so superbly.

A Busy Weekend on the River! We have had a busy weekend on the river. On Saturday our younger pupils headed off in the octuple and the quadruple scull whilst the older pupils took their first wobbly steps in double and singles – I am pleased to report everyone returned dry! On Sunday we were out in the octuple and had a great row. If you look carefully in the background you can see Mr Hinds taking his first strokes in a training boat with the orange safety boat there - just in case! It was not needed though as he soon mastered sculling. I think we could soon see a father and son double with Olivier!
