Sixth Form Thursday 14 March 2024

SIXTH FORM NEWS Hello again and welcome to another week of term with Sixth Form! The Year 12s have had a very busy week this week, filled with exciting talks, trips and new opportunities. Abigail B shared her thoughts on their careers lesson on Tuesday: “We had a special opportunity to listen to a talk given by a Corporal and Lance Corporal from the Army's Engineering section, explaining their roles as electrician and communications engineers, as well as the responsibilities involved in their work and the daily tasks they undertake. I found it useful to hear the entry requirements for different courses that the Army offers, as well as the intense fun they have both experienced through sports camps and team building exercises. Initially, I didn't consider going down this route, but this talk has opened my mind to another possible career pathway, as the opportunities in the Army seem endless!” Next week, the Year 12s have another interesting talk in store for careers, learning about the ins and outs of jobs in HR. Sophie F in Year 13 said “On Wednesday evening, the A Level Drama and Dance students took a trip to see the physical theatre production ‘Kin’, performed by Gecko. We were all really moved by the completely silent production, telling the migration stories of refugees and exploring the meaning of ‘home’ for each character. This was then followed by a tour of the theatre, where we were shown the costume and set design areas for the play. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience and would recommend it to others.” Congratulations to all of our Year 13s who sat their Textiles mock this week - we are very proud of you all!

And lastly, on Friday morning we had our pastoral check-ins. This is a time where students have a chance to meet with their form tutors to discuss how the year is going and what support is available for them.

I look forward to writing to you all next week! Julia T (Deputy Head Girl)

BOARDING NEWS This week in boarding Jan 2024, we welcome our New Gap Students to St. T’s. Madi, Ellie and Lu, who have joined us from Australia to be greeted by our British weather and their first flurry of snow. The boarders are happy to be back with their friends and are already into the swing of things, the Year 11’s have knuckled down to revision in readiness for their mocks. This weekend they had an excursion to Westfields’ shopping centre and grabbed themselves some sales bargains. With the evenings still dark the girls are being more creative in their free time with dances, word puzzles and Sudoku. All in all, a lovely start to the new year.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS The GCSE and A Level dancers enjoyed a trip to watch Matthew Bourne's 'Edward Scissorhands' this week. A great way for them to start the term!

EDI AMBASSADORS Happy New Year to everyone from the Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Ambassadors! We wanted to take a moment to reflect on the amazing projects we did in 2023. One of the highlights was our King Fest, a cultural festival where we celebrated the diverse cultures at our school. It was so much fun with different foods from various countries. The festival truly embraced the richness of our school's cultural tapestry. Our assemblies were incredibly insightful too! We had the opportunity to educate different year groups about the importance of Black History Month. We shared stories of influential figures like Maya Angelou, who made a significant impact on literature and civil rights. It was inspiring to see how these assemblies' sparked conversations and increased awareness among our school community. During Diwali, we had an incredible celebration too! We created a Tik Tok video where girls explained how they celebrated Diwali, sharing their traditions, rituals, and the significance of the festival. It was a beautiful way to showcase the diversity within our community and educate others about Diwali. Looking ahead, we're super excited to plan our Lunar New Year celebration! We're brainstorming ideas to make it a memorable event. It's going to be a fantastic opportunity to learn about culture and celebrate together! From Amarie, your EDI prefect, and the EDI ambassadors.

PSHE LESSON In Friday’s PSHE lesson to our Sixth Formers we were joined by a financial expert who looked at the best ways for our pupils to budget for when they are at university.

CLOTHES DONATION The Hall family spent part of their weekend sorting out their clothes and toys so that they could make a donation to an orphanage in Ecuador. They wanted to keep some things, but spoke about having humility to pass something on to someone else whose need is greater. They were shocked at how much they actually had and how much they didn’t need!

We hope that you have all stayed wrapped up and warm this week.

Temperatures have dropped, so please make sure that your child comes to ride with enough layers. We do have some coats and gloves on hand that can be borrowed, however we are limited in sizes. In the cold weather it can be useful to wear tights or leggings underneath jodhpurs/ trousers, the sports skins as a base layer and wearing enough coats on top. Our staff will be encouraging all riders to wear gloves, but if you have your own please make sure to bring it with you.

Topic of the week: Feeding It is important to take care when feeding your horse, as it is easy to feed your horse the wrong thing, too much or too little. The main diet of horses should be forage, this is grass, hay/haylage and chopped grass in hard feed, such as chaff and lucerne. Horses should eat between 1.5-2% of their bodyweight daily, which is dependent on how much work your horse is doing, age, height and weight, and temperament. ~ Libby C

Holidays Activities 2024 We have released our holiday activities on our online booking system for the rest of the academic year! Competition Time! We have a new member at the stables who will be here to tell us all of the news that goes on with the horses at STE. But they don’t have a name!! Until Thursday 25th January, we will be asking everyone to put in their vote for what we should call them. The options are:

A.

Sparkles B.

Please email or let any member of staff know so that you can put your vote forward.

Put in your vote for which STE pony should be this years Valentine! Cut out the heart to the left, or pick up a bigger version from the equestrian office. Draw, colour and design in for your favourite pony and pin it up on the notice board in the equestrian office. STE staff will then tally up the votes on Monday 19th February and the pony with the most votes will be the STE valentine for 2024!

This Week In Chapel this week we reflected on the dramatic account of the call of Samuel (1 Sam 3). The introduction makes it clear that both Samuel and his mentor Eli are far from God, and Eli has lost not just his physical sight, but his spiritual insight too. Then, into the darkness of that night, God appears. We then have the somewhat comic account of those three times that Samuel mistakenly wakes Eli from his sleep, both literal and spiritual, as he becomes every more aware of God calling him. Finally, even the faithless Eli recognises that God is calling Samuel and he advises young Samuel how to respond, open to God’s call. Samuel is a lot like most of us. We live in a world that in so many respects has persuaded itself that it has moved beyond its relationship with God, a world where we kid ourselves that we can make it on our own. Yet we are as surely called by God as Samuel was. It is unlikely that we will hear a booming voice from heaven, yet in the countless suggestions, prompts and nudges in our lives, God as surely calls us as he did Samuel. Our own St Therese reminds us that there will be opportunities every sign day that God will place before us, opportunities for us to share the loving presence of God with our family, friends and neighbours. We may not notice them at first, but that gentle, persistent call will come back again and again. All we are asked to do is respond. “Speak Lord, your servant is listening!”
