Sixth Form Thursday 14 March 2024

SIXTH FORM NEWS Hello everyone! This week, Alicia C in Year 12 and Vanessa DA in Year 13 have written about various interesting events that took place in their busy week in the Sixth Form. Finance and Budgeting

“Last Friday, the Sixth Form had a PSHE talk about the importance of budgeting when living away from home – for many of us, this will be at university. We were provided with a template and had the opportunity to practice with potential figures, incorporating student loan. There were many things we had to consider when deciding how much money we would spend, such as amenities and subscriptions. This will be a great help in the future, making the transition to living independently easier.” Vanessa DA Careers Talk: Working in HR “On Monday, during our careers lesson, the Year 12’s received a talk from the Effingham Trust’s Head of HR, Joanna Tyerman. During the talk we learnt about various roles within a Human Resources career, what each role entails, and several ways of getting into the world of HR. Many girls enjoyed the talk, engaging through several questions, as it gave valuable insight and opened doors into a new career prospect. The talk was very interesting and prompted several girls to continue research into this area of work. Alicia C Student Leadership Assembly Next Thursday, a group of Head Girl candidates have taken on the opportunity to present an assembly to the Sixth Form, to practice our public speaking. This assembly aims to teach students about the effects of listening to music whilst working and provides tools that may aid the revision process for future exams. The assembly will give an insight into the genre of music, how, and why music can be used to our advantage as we move towards the summer exams. We look forward to sharing our research and new-found knowledge with the Sixth Form!” Alicia C The Head Girl and prefect applications have been rolling in this week as the girls prepare to take office. Good luck to all those applying for a role! And finally, congratulations to all Year 13 Art students who sat their mocks this week! I hope you all have another wonderful week! Julia T (Deputy Head Girl)

BOARDING NEWS This weekend the girls enjoyed a lovely trip down to Portsmouth where it was a bit chilly and windy, however the sun was out as well as smiles all round from the girls. The girls walked around town and appreciated the sights of boats and the water and the pleasure of each other’s company. Throughout the week, in the vibrant atmosphere of the cozy boarding office, the girls gathered around, eyes focused and anticipation building for a spirited Uno match. Laughter and friendly banter filled the air as players strategically plotted their moves, aiming to be the first to shout "Uno!" in a bid to declare their impending victory!

ROTARY DEBATE On Wednesday 24th January, two teams took part in the Rotary Intermediate Public Speaking Competition. The teams competed against Manor House and Downsend. One team was comprised of: Lucy T as chair, Georgina and Malia B-G. The motion they debated was: We are too obsessed with labels. They explored labels in relation to people and how labels such as ADHD, OCD, dyslexia and Anxiety disorder can be both helpful and harmful. Our second team was represented by: Amelia B as chair, Jessica K and Sophia M. They explored the two sides of the debate: Street smart is better than book smart. Both teams delivered incredibly convincing arguments with conviction. The judging panel was so impressed with the quality of all of their speeches and the first team won the competition and will go through to the next stage and represent the school at the Semi-Finals. Well done to all.

WHEN GIRLS FALL OUT On Thursday Andrew Hampson gave a talk on the importance of navigating the complexities that arise when your daughters face challenges in their friendships.

We hope that you have all had a lovely week.

Our gorgeous pony Tango is looking for a new loan home. He is looking for a small adult who wants a fun ginger pony to go out hacking on, and possibly do some light schooling. If this sounds like you, or you know of someone, please contact the office.

Topic of the week: Exercise If your horse is in work, making sure they have regular exercise will keep them fit and healthy. Doing a range of different types of exercises, such as dressage, jumping, hacking and lungeing, will help your horse’s overall fitness and happiness. When working in the arena doing things like serpentines, figures of eights, and circles, as well as polework and groundwork keeps their interest and allows them to work different muscle groups. It is also important to go off-site to go hacking, going to an arena hire, cross country, and lots more! ~ Libby C

February Half Term 2024 Book now to join us over the February Half Term! We are running Private Lessons, Pony Mornings and Pony Afternoons, but if there’s something else that you’re interested in such as a Stable Management, Equitation, Lungeing or Long Reining Training, or possibly a Hack then do contact the office to enquire if this is something we can arrange.

Draw, colour and design in for your favourite pony and pin it up on the notice board in the equestrian office. STE staff will then tally up the votes on Monday 19th February and the pony with the most votes will be the STE valentine for 2024!

This Week In the past, travellers around London could be seen with their well-worn copies of the A to Z Map, a book that showed them every street and road across the whole of the city. The problem with the A to Z though was that you had to know where you were and the direction that you wanted to travel in. Get either of these wrong and you would almost certainly get lost. The introduction of Sat Nav has changed all this. Once the destination has been set, our digital assistant will guide us onto the quickest route. And even on those occasions when we go astray, it quickly reroutes us. This week we reflected on the character of Jonah. Famously, having been told by God to travel East, over land, to Nineveh, he instead travelled West, over the sea, to Tarshish!! Things were bound to go wrong as he did the very opposite of what God called him to do. Rather than obey, he took the still more perilous decision to confront the greatest fear in the ancient world, the chaotic, unpredictable sea that was sure to be filled with every manner of terrible beast!

We can often be like Jonah. While we may not be quite so deliberate in our disobedience, most of us know those times when our thoughts, words and actions have gone against what we know to be good and right, what we know to be against God's gentle call for us. While we are unlikely to spend three days consumed by the horrors of the deep, when we reflect, we know, in our hearts, what we should do! Just like a sat nav, even on those occasions when we go terribly wrong, God gently redirects us. However far astray we may have gone, when we turn our attention back to Him, He will gently guide us back onto the right path. Perhaps this week we can reflect on where in our lives we need to make that change in direction, knowing that our loving Father will always be there guiding us on our journey.
