SIXTH FORM NEWS For the last time, a big hello from me and welcome to the last week of this half term! This week, there’s been lots of buzz and anticipation in Sixth Form, as the Year 13s finish off the last of their duties and prepare for mocks, whilst the Year 12s have seen Head Girl speeches on Monday morning, applicant interviews and finally the announcement of new Prefect roles on Friday. As I pass on my role as Deputy Head Girl, I want to say just how much I have enjoyed writing the Sixth Form section of the weekly bulletin each week for the past year. It has been such a pleasure to give the bulletin regulars an insight into Sixth Form life from a Sixth Former’s perspective. I extend my biggest congratulations and good luck to the new Head Girl Team, Abi B, Alicia C, Charlie J and Amelia SM, Senior Prefect Team and Prefects for the year ahead.
I hope you all have a fantastic half term break! Julia T (Deputy Head Girl)
ARE YOU IN A CAREER THAT YOU'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT? Perhaps you took an interesting route to what you're doing now? Are you in a job that didn't exist years ago? We would love our students to hear first-hand from those in the world of work who are part of our St Teresa's community. If you're keen to share your experiences or interested in getting involved in a new Careers Programme we are developing, please contact Nicola Renshaw, Head of Careers on n.renshaw@st-teresas.com
BOARDING NEWS The boarders had a lovely trip to Guildford and went shopping which they thoroughly enjoyed. Birthdays were celebrated with baking of cakes and the traditional singing of the happy birthday song. That wasn’t the only baking as some of the girls made cookies in the shape of hearts which were decorated beautifully. Throughout the week the boarders celebrated the Lunar New Year with a Hot Pot night to enjoy the festive event. The girls came together to enjoy a feast with a variety of ingredients that could be added to the pot to be cooked to perfection. Once the ingredients were cooked, everyone started fishing them out of the pot and enjoying them with their preferred dipping sauces. The flavours are rich and comforting, with each bite offering a burst of warmth and satisfaction. The evening was filled with happiness and smiles all round. The Year 11s celebrated the end of the 2-week mock period with a lovely dinner at Coppa Club. The girls said they have never found something more delicious than the Sticky toffee pudding. Wishing everyone a lovely half term.
NEW LUNAR YEAR
FRENCH BREAKFAST With some help from our Year 10 pupils, the Year 5 from St Térèse and Cranmore met in a French café set up to share a traditional French breakfast. They savoured a tartine, a slice of baguette with butter or jam, some viennoiseries: a croissant and a pain au chocolat, an orange juice and some hot chocolate. Many of them sampled the delight of dunking their bread in their hot chocolate bowl as it makes it so much tastier. They also enjoyed being able to communicate in French.
Bravo les Year 5, quelle expérience fantastique et succulente !
HOUSE QUIZ This week marked the highly anticipated interhouse quiz! Representatives from each house tackled questions centered on the knowledge they have learnt throughout the year. It was a closely contested event, necessitating a tiebreaker to determine the victor in the lower Years. Ultimately, St Benedict emerged triumphant in both rounds this year! Well done everyone!
MENTAL HEALTH WEEK PHSE Wellbeing Week Year 7 & 9 had a special wellbeing talk from guest speaker Paula Cawley this week, as part of our wellbeing week programme. The girls took part in interactive and reflective questioning during the sessions, before they designed their own takeaway tips about how to promote positive mental health. Key Stage 3 Interhouse Debating Competition - Mental Health week During this half term, Years 7-9 took part in debating techniques sessions before going head to head in a debating finale. Form groups scored points for each of their eloquently placed arguments for or against the notion: 'Social Media is ruining our Childhood'! All of the participants really engaged the judges with their well placed and thoroughly researched arguments. The girls really showed a sense of maturity and respect for all points of view discussed. We have really learned about how social media can be both beneficial to teens and to take away thoughts about how it can be damaging to mental health. We summarised that all use of social media must be carefully considered and well placed in order to be beneficial to teenage mental health.

Draw, colour and design it for your favourite pony and pin it up on the notice board in the equestrian office. STE staff will then tally up the votes on Monday 19th February and the pony with the most votes will be the STE valentine for 2024!
Topic of the week: Eventing There are many different disciplines in horse riding, one of them is Eventing. Eventing includes three different disciplines: Dressage, Cross Country, and Show Jumping. Competitions can take place as One Day Events where each phase is performed on the same day, or as Three Day Events. Eventing was originally created as a Cavalry test but later on became more and more popular across the equestrian community. ~ Libby C
This Week
We focused in Chapel this week on one of the most dramatic moments in the scriptures (John 8) where Jesus is confronted by a baying mob, intent on stoning an adulterous woman to death. It is arguably the tipping point in the Gospel where Jesus must either confirm the judgement of the law and have the woman stoned, or reject it and thus invite righteous condemnation from the religious leaders. In a dramatic pause, Jesus does not immediately respond. Instead, he kneels and writes in the sand. Curiously, we are not told what he writes. Some suggest he is writing out the Ten Commandments. Other suggest that he is listing the sins and errors of the religious leaders. Neither of these seem to fit with Jesus’ attitude or approach in his teaching. While we will never know for sure, a favoured suggestion is that he is writing the Hebrew word ‘Hesed’, meaning ‘steadfast love’ or, perhaps simpler, ‘mercy’. Finally Jesus speaks, ‘Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone.’ Starting with the oldest, but then including everyone present, they drop their stones and walk away. Jesus alone, the only sinless one in the scene, remains and brings about the conversion of the woman, confirming that she is not condemned by him. Nothing we can do can every separate us from God’s loving mercy. Whatever we have done, He always welcomes us back into His loving embrace. Let’s remember this as we enter the season of Lent and are also called to ‘not sin again.’
