Autumn Term

19th APRIL 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020

Dear Parents, I do hope you all managed to have some rest over the Easter holiday; it is always wonderful to welcome the girls back up the hill, and we have been blessed with some beautiful spring weather. Over the holiday, our super Maintenance team have kept the school looking spick and span, and, excitingly, repaired the bell above the chapel as well as giving it a fresh coat of paint. It has not rung for years, and its cheerful sound will now become part of the rhythm of the school week. The new Head Girl team have also been beavering away, coming up with a number of exciting schemes: the greenhouse has been cleared ready for the cultivation of peppers and tomatoes, a student magazine is going to press, and with the generous help of FOST, a number of outdoor blankets have been purchased to give our bubbled year groups something slightly softer to sit on outdoors - a launch assembly awaits on Monday. Years 11 and 13 have been given further special assemblies by myself and Miss Nelson to bring them up to date on developments from JCQ regarding Teacher Assessed Grades (or TAGs), and I wish to reassure you that we are planning exceptionally carefully for these. It is worth mentioning that part of the guidance suggests that evidence should be, wherever possible (with the possible emphasised), consistent across cohorts, and should show appropriate breadth to reflect the qualification. This will ensure fairness and credibility, and a sample of our evidence will be sent off for external moderation. We are not permitted to cherry-pick the 'greatest hits' unique to each and every individual; but we will always, always do our very best for your daughter. They are in safe hands. Please can I gently remind you to ensure that, if you have consented, you continue to test your daughters twice-weekly with Lateral Flow Tests. Please note that there has been a refinement to the guidance: a confirmatory PCR test must be undertaken if a positive LFT results. I wish you all a very pleasant weekend, and thank you, as ever for your wonderful support. Best wishes, Claire McShane

ART WORK OF THE WEEK COMPETITION Our winner of this week’s art competition is Elena in Year 8. Please do send your entries to n.menzies@st-teresas.com

BOARDING NEWS The Boarders returned on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon, it is wonderful to have the girls back in the Boarding house. They were very excited to see the photographs of Mrs Wragg’s seven puppies which were born over the Easter break. This weekend the girls are meeting to do their Duke of Edinburgh training so we will stay on-site and do some baking, a pamper session in the evening and we have mass on Sunday. We look forward to taking the girls off site in the weeks ahead and have lots of fun outdoor activities planned. Miss J.Mentz Head of Boarding

2021 CENSUS This year on March the 23rd was the UK Census Day. Here at St Teresa’s, we also did our own version of the Census in our mathematics lessons. This involved asking questions to the whole school from Year 7 to Year 13. Some of the questions were ‘how long does it take you to get ready for school’ and ‘how many languages do you speak’. Students in Year 7 and Year 8 used this data to create various charts to represent this data. We then wrote a report and discussed the data. The answer that stood out the most was that a very high percentage (80%) of students only spoke English. We really enjoyed presenting our own charts of data to the class. By Georgia S and Lila R

We hope that you’ve had a lovely half term and are excited as we are to be back! While we are still sticking to a majority of our preventative procedures, such as social distancing, staggered lessons, masks within 2m and hand washing. Riders are allowed once again to collect their horses from the barn for their lessons, and return them to their stable at the end.

We want to say thank you to you all for your patience with booking on the new system. We’re still in the trial period and any feedback is greatly appreciated to improve the experience going forward.

With the system, our cancellation policy has changed slightly, we still require 48hrs notice of a cancellation for the lesson to be credited but we no longer require a reason for a catch-up lesson

This Week It was wonderful, this week, to return to school and be able to wish every one a ‘Happy Easter!’ Easter is the greatest feast of the Church’s year and during the week we have reflected on the account of the resurrection of Jesus. We began by remembering how the women went to the tomb early on Sunday morning, only to find that the stone had been rolled away and that Jesus had risen. The news reached the apostles but they were still filled with fear. They expected to be arrested and possibly to face the same tortuous death that Jesus himself had faced. It was into this situation that Jesus himself appeared. Most significantly he began with the words of reassurance, ‘Peace be with you!’ Whatever burdens of fear and worry they had, he offered to remove them forever. Thomas, famously, was not there at that moment. He couldn’t believe what the others had told him. It was only when Jesus appeared once again - this time with Thomas present - that Thomas made his great declaration about Jesus, ‘My Lord and my God!’ How unfortunate that Thomas has been given the nickname ‘Doubting’ when, in fact, he is the first of the followers of Jesus to recognise who Jesus really was - ‘Our Lord and Our God!’ We pray that we can recognise this over the coming weeks as we celebrate the great joy of the season of Easter.
