SIXTH FORM NEWS

Hi all,

I hope you have had a lovely week! We’ve had a busy week in sixth form; last Friday, Year 12 had the opportunity to bestow some of their knowledge and wisdom to the Year 11s, giving them advice and support when making their revision timetables. We helped when making their subject priority lists, allotting specific times for revision, but also including some time for fun.

Monday’s student council had a special visitor:

This week in Student Council we invited Gary from Catering to come and join us to hear any suggestions the year group representatives may have about the school lunches. All year groups contributed really well, and some excellent suggestions were made, leaving Gary with a long list of ideas that may come into play in the future! (Charlie – Deputy Head Girl).

On Tuesday, Year 12 went to the UK University and Apprenticeship Fair at Surrey University. There were over 80 universities attending from around the UK who were able to answer our questions and give us prospectuses. There were also various talks such as Student Finance and advice when writing your personal statement. We were also given an assortment of pens, bags, badges and even chip salt (from Hull University) from various universities. Overall, it was an informative and valuable trip, to help us gain a greater awareness of the various courses available and their requirements.

Throughout the week we have been celebrating National Careers Week. Our Head of Careers, Mrs Renshaw, has shared resources each day that focus on a particular area of work. These have ranged from Law, Engineering, Finance, Banking and Accountancy. We have been able to see the various subjects required, the skills needed and the different jobs that are in these fields. This Friday we had a talk from Fiona Rutherford, CEO of JUSTICE, who spoke about her career that started in Chambers as a barrister working for the CPS, then progressed to the Court Service, the Ministry of Justice, and now JUSTICE. An organisation that strives for a fair, accessible and equal justice system.

On Friday, the second Maths Masterclass also took place. A group of A-Level Maths students lead a session on Code-breaking and Ciphers, for prep students from St. Ts, Cranmore and Manor House. It included the route cipher, ceaser cipher and pigpen cipher!

Have a lovely weekend,

BOARDING NEWS

At the weekend the boarders enjoyed an adventure out to Ninja Warrior. Adorned in comfortable activewear and trainers, they were ready to take on the challenges of the inflatable obstacle course. With spirits soaring, the girls charged into the colourful labyrinth of inflatable obstacles. They navigated through towering slides, bounced across giant balls, and conquered obstacles of all shapes and sizes with boundless enthusiasm. After hours of exhilarating adventure, the girls took a well-deserved break to refuel.

Also this week , we celebrated World Boarding

WELLBEING ROOM

Needing time out? The Wellbeing Room is open to all students Monday - Friday 13:30 - 14:00. Trained Youth Mental Health Prefects are on hand to support you with any worries or concerns you may have. Feel free to stop by. (The Wellbeing Room is next to Medical)

MACBETH

Year 9 had a fantastic trip with the English department to Worthing to see 'Macbeth'. Having studied the play last term and with one eye on the end of Year examinations where they will be answering on this text, pupils enjoyed the opportunity to see a live performance of Shakespeare's tragedy. It was a very modern production with lots of innovative technical ideas alongside some exciting audience participation. This was a wonderful way to begin preparations for revision of the Year 9 set text.

INTERHOUSE MUSIC FESTIVAL

Well done to all the girls who participated in the music festival on Wednesday and Thursday. You all played beautifully, and we can't wait to hear the results on which house won.

We will announce next week!

ST TERESA’S HOSTS THE WORLD SCHOLARS CUP REGIONAL ROUND

For the third consecutive year, St Teresa's proudly hosted the esteemed World Scholars Cup London-Surrey regional round. This year marked a record attendance, with 182 students from various schools, including representatives from Switzerland and Guernsey.

The competition unfolded over March 3rd and 4th, as students engaged in teams of three across four challenging events: Team Debate, Scholars' Challenge, Scholars' Bowl, and Collaborative Writing.

On the second day, the program featured a captivating Showcase Debate, with Hayley P (Year 9) representing St Teresa's as a selected speaker, alongside an entertaining talent show.

St Teresa's teams showcased remarkable performances, securing notable achievements. Kaitlyn C, Erin C, and Chloe W earned 2nd place in the Team Debate junior division, while Malia G Hayley P, and Lavinia S clinched 2nd place in Collaborative Writing junior division.

Individual successes were equally commendable, with Lavinia Singh claiming 2nd place in Collaborative Writing. Chloe W (Year 7) emerged as the top-scoring pupil in the junior division, while Claudia B (Year 9) excelled as the top scorer in the senior division.

Building on this success, preparations are underway to organize a trip for qualifying teams and students to participate in the global round, scheduled to take place in Stockholm in July 2024.

AUTHOR VISIT

As part of the English department's celebrations for National Book Week and World Book Day, we welcomed Sarah Mussi to school earlier this week. She delivered some inspiring talks to Years 7-9 about how to create stories and shared her own experiences on the road to becoming an author. In particular Year 9 were treated to a 'How to' session on descriptive and narrative writing which is an essential part of the GCSE English course. Book signings and a meet a greet, rounded off a fabulous day.

This Week

This week we continued our exploration of three encounters found in Mark’s Gospel where Jesus reaches out, literally as well as metaphorically, to those on the margins of society. This week we reflected on the account of the healing of the woman with a haemorrhage (Mark 5:25-34).

The woman in questions would, at this time, have been totally isolated from both society and from the worship in the temple. There would have been a deep rooted suspicion that this ailment that had lasted for so many years would have been the result of immoral behaviour, with the illness being some form of punishment. As if to add insult to injury, she would have been prevented from taking any part in the worship of the community due to the consideration of blood being unclean, and such an illness meaning that she could not even set foot within the Temple, let alone worship.

What then becomes apparent is the woman’s courage. We see the seed of faith grow in her as she seizes the opportunity to approach Jesus as he walks through her town. Seemingly in secret she catches hold of the hem of his garment and, in that moment of tentative faith, her ailment is healed and she is made whole again. The disciples, in their typical way, are aghast at Jesus when he askes who touched him. Yet this provides an opportunity for the woman to confirm her faith. After her faltering first approach her experience of healing and inclusion enables her to declare her faith in Jesus her saviourliterally, her healer - as she bows down before Him.

As we reflect on this account we can recall that we too are drawn into that relationship of love that is always on offer. The simplest action from us opens the floodgates of that grace that is on offer. And likewise, having received that grace so we too can be alert to those who we meet who feel excluded, disenfranchised and on the margins so that we can be the hand of welcome that invites them back into a community of love.
