SIXTH FORM NEWS
I hope you have had a lovely week. The sixth form has been busy with various careers events, revision and planning for some fun events at the end of term.
The Head Girl Team lead the Whole School Assembly this week, revealing the initiative of Toilet Twinning. We tasked the whole school with the challenge of raising enough money to twin every toilet at St. T’s with toilets in less fortunate countries around the world. There are various fund-raising activities to watch out for such as a mufti-day, sport matches and school merchandise.
On Monday we had a talk in careers from Tom Whittaker, a University Counsellor. He gave us advice on how to choose a university and course, that fits our interests and abilities: it is important to find a university that has an academic fit, environment fit, and experience fit, to take full advantage of university life. He made us aware of how university education differs across the continents. For example, in the US, your focus is not just on the specific subject you are studying; you also study a more general curriculum consisting of expository writing, general education, quantitative reasoning with data and electives.
On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have 11 universities from around the world visit us, including Bocconi University in Milan, Columbia University in New York, Cunef University in Madrid and Bishop’s University in Canada. We were able to talk with universities representatives, ask questions about the application process, courses available and life in another country. For example, as part of a course at Cunef, you can study one year in one country, and then another elsewhere.
Have a lovely weekend, Amelia (Deputy Head Girl)
BOARDING NEWS
Spring is in full swing, and life in the boarding house is bustling with activity!
Last Saturday, our boarders embarked on an unforgettable trip to Thorpe Park! From exhilarating rides to endless laughter, it was a day filled with excitement and adventure. The girls especially enjoyed the ‘stealth’ ride, being the UK’s fastest roller coaster.
The boarders have also enjoyed getting outside in
The boarding team gave the wonderful Gap Year Students a Suprise Australian Care package as a thank you for doing so well. Crisps sweets and snacks that they have missed from home.
QUIZ NIGHT
Some of our Sixth Formers put together a fundraising quiz last Friday evening, in support of a charity in Costa Rica dedicated to the preservation of sea turtles. Thank you all for your support.
YEAR 7 DRAMA FESTIVAL
Year 7 have been working since January on creating their own pieces for performance in their drama lessons. They have focused meticulously on the editing of a playscript, the importance of italics, use of brackets, and the use of lighting or indeed sound cues.
They then handed over their scripts to another group to perform, and it was at this stage that they all became directors, set/ sound/costume, and lighting designers.
On Wednesday they brought their final performances to the stage to show everything they have worked on for the past few months!
CCF
Tracy Pearson, our CCF leader, was last night awarded her Long Service Bar for 18 years of service! Thank you Mrs Pearson for everything you do for the cadets. We welcomed Squadron Leader Jeremy Davies RAFAC, who presented the award with our cadets standing to attention.
TEEN TIPS TALK
Year 8 received a talk from Teen Tips about friendship, covering the group process to help them understand how friendships work, what makes a healthy friendship group and what to do when things go wrong: Calm, Consider and Chat.
MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
We were delighted to welcome back Paula Cawley who was running an accredited course on Mental Health First Aid. The sixth formers learnt about different mental health conditions and how to support themselves and others, with a special session on university life. All the girls demonstrated huge compassion and all passed with flying colours!
SCHOLA CANTORUM TO WINCHESTER
Last Friday, Schola Cantorum had the privilege of singing Evensong in Winchester Cathedral. Boasting the longest medieval nave in Europe, this magnificent building has inspired worship for many generations and we were honoured to be given the opportunity to sing there. Having submitted a recording earlier this year demonstrating the calibre of our choir, we were invited to lead the service, which was also livestreamed. We chose to sing William Harris’ setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, but the highpoint of the evening was our anthem ‘The Heavens are Telling’ from Haydn’s ‘The Creation’. The beauty of the piece was reflected in the wonderful setting and members of the congregation commented on the uplifting nature of the service as a whole. It is always a pleasure to take part in an Evensong service, especially in one of England’s greatest cathedrals, and we look forward to many
EASTER SPANISH ADVENTURE
Sophie A shared with us her experience doing an intensive Spanish course in Barcelona over the Easter Holidays:
“During the Easter Holidays, I went to Barcelona to study at a school to improve my Spanish.Whilst at the school, I had lessons in a small class every morning and then conversational classes, which covered an array of different topics including sports and festivals!
After studying each day, I had the opportunity to take part in the school's activities, which included tours through the old part of Barcelona and Salsa classes. As well as this, I saw the Sagrada Familia and Gaudi's Casa Battló and Casa Milà, which were incredible.
I stayed with a host family, which helped me practice my Spanish after school as well, since my hosts didn't speak much English.
I loved my time in Barcelona. The city is very beautiful but more importantly it helped me to further my Spanish which will really help me with my A Level.
It was a fully immersive experience, and I would recommend doing something like this to anyone taking an A level in a language.

This Week
We continued our journey through the season of Easter with one of the most famous journeys recording in the Gospels, that of the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24). Two disciples, perhaps a married couple, fled Jerusalem yet were met by a mysterious stranger. They, with no little irony, ask the traveller,‘Are you the only inhabitant of Jerusalem who does not know what has been happening over the last few days?’!!
Again, we draw three messages from this passage. Firstly, as with the disciples, it is at those moments when we are at our lowest point, when all hope is lost, that Jesus will gently make his presence felt. Jesus is always there, as the saying goes, with ‘the least, the lost and the last.’ When we need him most, He will be there!
We often imagine that our conversion will involve heaven wrenched open, heavenly voices and beatific visions. The truth is that it is more like a gently voice, calmly revealing the truth to us. It took at least three hours of Jesus explaining during the walk to Emmaus. For us, it may take even longer.
Finally, as their companion on the journey, Jesus reveals himself in the breaking of bread (that moment that is so beautifully represented by the alter piece in the Chapel ).
‘Companion’ literally refers to those who we share bread with. For some of us, it is a clear reference to the Eucharist. But for us all, we may reflect that it is in our relationships with others that the reality of God’s presence is often made real.
Perhaps we, like the disciples, can watch out for the gentle presence in our lives this week!
