Autumn Term
21 JUNE2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020
Dear Parents, It almost feels like a normal end of term - almost! It was a joy to welcome parents (at appropriate intervals!) to our Sports Day on Wednesday, and it was a delight to see so many pupils taking part, wearing their new house t-shirts. Congratulations go to St Benedict for winning the cup! There were some incredible displays of enviable athleticism, and quite a number of displays of stoicism - particularly on the fifth lap of the track of the 1500m. As usual, the girls did us proud. I would like to thank all the competitors for their enthusiasm, particularly during the closely-fought egg and spoon race, and to the staff who worked so hard to bring this about in such unusual circumstances. It really is a team effort (Mr Gill was in his element as race-starter, and we had various officials, timers, bellringers and scorers), but enormous gratitude to Miss Still, Miss Nelson, Miss Kay, Miss Gibson, Miss Elliott, Miss Jones and Miss Watson. We have even greater plans for next year! It was also such a pleasure to see Year 11 back up the hill for their Celebration Ball. Again, unusual circumstances forced us to rethink our approach, but it was exceptionally special to be able to have a ball, outside, in our beautiful school grounds. All members of Year 11 looked sensational in their dresses, jumpsuits and suits. Gary and his team served wonderful food, before the girls danced the night away to a number of ABBA's greatest hits. Many photographs were taken. Thank you to Mrs Uren and her elite team of form tutors for chaperoning this wonderful occasion. Tonight: the Year 13 Leavers' Ball! Finally, a brief reminder that Prize Giving will be live-streamed once again this year, unless your daughter is in Year 13, has won a prize, or is assisting with music. These girls are requested to attend in person. Year 13 parents are warmly invited to attend. Prize winners will be informed in good time. I do hope you have a lovely weekend. Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane
ART WORK OF THE WEEK COMPETITION Our winner of this week’s art competition is Hanna K in Year 8. Next week we will be announcing our overall winner.
BOARDING NEWS We had three of our boarders take part in a Duke of Edinburgh expedition this weekend. The girls were hiking around the Surrey Hills with a camp overnight, fortunately they did not get too wet! The girls were required to put up their own camp and make their own food. They came back tired but pleased to have completed their expedition. The remaining girls who were on-site went to Guildford for some retail therapy and lunch. This week is NATIONAL BOARDING WEEK and we have some fun activities for the girls to take part in this week: Kindness - Quilling Cards for friends Fitness - Games in the sports hall Saturday - Trip to an escape room Boarders Bake-off on Sunday Stay tuned for the pictures in next week's bulletin.
SIXTH FORM NEWS News from the Sixth Form this week from our Deputy Head Girl, Imogen L. This week in the Sixth Form we have continued to welcome Year 11 students for their second week of their A Level Transition lessons. This has been really valuable for them as they are able to get an insight into life in the Sixth Form and what their A Level subjects are like. They have also had a chance to start looking at their EPQ projects and meet the current Year 12s to make their transition as smooth as possible. We have also had some of the Year 13s back with us whilst they enjoy their Pre-University Courses. The aim of this is to teach students the skills required for learning at university, whilst the seminars with subject relevant teachers offer guidance, support and discussion. A very popular workshop was Miss Bates’ Cooking On A Budget, where a group of Year 13 students spent some time with Miss Bates discussing nutrition, costing and things to consider when cooking at university in preparation for those girls taking the next chapter in September. They trialled some dishes including a risotto, kofta, spicy sausage pasta and a ‘posh’ pot noodle, this has meant that the girls are capable and know what they are doing when cooking for themselves and others at university. Other highlights included the Year 13 students relaxing in their Looking After Yourself: Relaxation Gong Bath workshop, learning all about budgeting in Mr O'Farrell's Managing Your Money and earning their Mental Health First Aid Qualification through the completion of the MHFA two day qualification course. A huge well done to our Senior Prefect: Values, Lucy Kate who worked with the teachers to organise all of the events in values week that we enjoyed last week. The whole school community were able to enjoy the daily dose of Breakeoke, equestrian visits, the making of hearts for the chapel and butterfly display in the dining hall with a group of us attending the pilgrimage to Guildford Cathedral. The planning for Values week 2022 has already begun with the excitement already rising for next year! Lara A and Ella M were lucky enough this week to be able to participate in a top level string quartet visiting the school on Monday 21st June. The girls wrote about their experience in the Music News on the following page. Lastly, I wanted to mention Libby C, one of our Year 13 students who managed to finally get her colour run off the ground, after lots of challenges over the last year! Years 12 and 13 students enjoyed being covered in colourful paint on Friday afternoon during their sport lesson. This event was due to happen last March but had to be postponed due to COVID, however it was a real success and the donations raised are in aid of cancer research. Attached are some pictures that were taken of the girls covered in paint and enjoying the course round the track.
MUSIC NEWS—STRING QUARTET VISIT I was astounded at how good the string quartets composed by Lara and Ella sounded when played by the visiting professional players. The girls were able to interact confidently and musical ideas were thrown backwards and forwards for an incredibly productive and intense 3 hour workshop. I am so proud of my A Level girls, Lara and Ella. Mr Tim Caister, Director of Music The string quartet gave us both such an important insight into how composition transforms when put into live performance. Being able to talk to each member of the string quartet and look at what worked and didn't work well with each section allowed the overall product to transform into something much more alive and vibrant. We came away with a much stronger understanding of our pieces and lots of ideas to make it much clearer for a performer to read our intent. It was so unique to anything we have done at A level and a brilliant opportunity that we are really thankful for! Lara and Ella, Year 13
ENGLISH NEWS Romeo and Juliet is showing at cinemas from Wednesday 7th July. This is a wonderful opportunity for Year 10 to see a fantastic production of their GCSE set text Romeo and Juliet. Click here for cinemas and ticket information. Mrs K McGrath, Head of English
RAINBOW PROJECT FOR GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL Guildford Cathedral have set up the ‘Rainbow Project’ to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The plan for the project is to decorate the pillars in the Nave of the Cathedral with rainbow coloured artwork based around the story of Noah’s Ark. The Diocese of Guildford have asked local school children to send in rainbow artwork which will be displayed over the summer holidays. If your child is interested in producing a piece of artwork, please see the document here. Entries need to be in for the 12th July.
LTA Match Play Event ESTA Head Coach Jack Lane is running an LTA match play event on Sunday 1st August for U12 & U14 players. This event is a great way for children to gain more match play experience in a familiar and fun environment! Please follow the link here to sign up.

Arnie and Sky will be leaving us at the end of the term to start their new chapters. We are on the lookout for horses to join STE and have a couple lined up already. However this does mean that horse availability will be even tighter for the second half of the term and the holiday period until we can replace the amazing Ellie, Arnie and Sky.
We also have three tickets going for a trip to the International Horse Show on Thursday 16th December 2021. Please contact the office to find out pricings if you are interested.
Equestrian Prize Giving We will be organising a small Equestrian Prize Giving on Saturday 3rd July for prize winners and parents only. The Prize Winners have already been decided and will be informed privately. We will be arranging a newsletter to announce the winners to all; this will be published by the end of the term.
Summer Holiday Pony Days We do still have some spaces available for the Pony Mornings and Afternoons in the summer holidays. These can be viewed on the booking system and selecting the calendar view which will give a monthly overview as an easier way to view availability. Bookings need to be made directly on the bookings system, except for those who pay by childcare vouchers. If you do pay by vouchers, please contact the office to make your booking.
NSEA Competition Reports The NSEA results that were published in last week’s bulletin for the Felbridge competition unfortunately had some errors in it. Over the summer we will update the website where you may read the correct results under the Competition Reports Page.
