SPORTS NEWS From Director of Sport Paul Hodgson
MARCH
16th NOVEMBER 2020
Although it wasn’t a surprise, it was fantastic to see the excitement and enthusiasm that the pupils showed for sport on their return to school.
Our Scholarship and Performance session has continued weekly, with pupils concentrating on athletic development and improving technical skills for various sports.
Rugby, football, hockey, netball, cricket, swimming, short tennis and land-based rowing have been just some of the sports that have taken place across the different year groups. Dance and ballet have also been enjoyed in the younger years, as well as Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS).
Plyometrics, hand-eye coordination and agility are just a few activities that have taken place. ‘Capture the Flag’ has also been included in some sessions to allow the pupils to develop their evasion, whilst considering tactical and strategic concepts.
Regarding rugby, the focus has been on evasion and sidestepping, defensive tracking and tackling technique.
As part of the new Development Centres based at Cranmore, it gives me great pleasure to announce the launch of the Chelsea Pre-Development Centre. The aim is to have Development Centres that run all year round to support our core curriculum sports. Ben Mitchell, Foundation’s Surrey development officer, said:
In terms of hockey, developmental concepts have involved perfecting the correct stance and movement skills, types of passing, and decision-making when building an attack. These skills have been developed within constraint-based minimatches. After-school training has included cricket and has focused on skill acquisition for bowling and fielding, with enjoyable kwik-cricket games being played, which are very popular amongst pupils.
‘Chelsea Foundation are delighted to be able to set up this latest football programme with Cranmore. This programme sees the culmination of our fantastic relationship with the staff and pupils at Cranmore to now broaden this into the local community. The Centre will give both male and female football players the opportunity to fulfil their potential and we can’t wait to get started in April.’ Mr Hodgson

March Lower Prep Sport We are so pleased to be able to have Lower Prep Sport back in person. The pupils have all come back to school with lots of energy and enthusiasm to learn. Reception have been learning and understanding how to handle a rugby ball correctly and they have been putting this into practice by dodging with the ball and learning how to sidestep. They have all loved learning a new sport. They have also had their weekly ballet lesson in which they have danced to Frozen and Baby Shark and they have loved learning new moves. Year 1 have also been learning all about rugby and invasion and evasion. They have learnt how to get away from a defender and to always accelerate when in possession of the ball. They have also been working on their target practice as this will really help in the Summer Term when we move onto some cricket skills. In lunchtime club they have been practising hand-eye coordination and all pupils have really progressed. Year 2 have had a good taster of hockey and they have been learning to get down low and not to tow the ball. They have played mini matches and they have all got really stuck in. In
their PE lessons they have been learning about movement and coordination skills. This has meant we have been able to get the ladders and hurdles out and we have shown them different ways and paces to move over these objects. Year 3 have also been playing hockey and rugby and they have progressed very well. In hockey they are learning more about the hockey rules and what they can and can’t do. They have played lots of hockey games and there has been some great competition. In rugby, they have been progressing their skills and playing touch rugby games, which has been very well received. All year groups have been fortunate to have their weekly swimming lessons. They have been focusing on their swimming strokes and breathing techniques. Overall, sports in the Lower Prep has been jam packed and that is how we like it at Cranmore! The pupils have had a great Spring Term and we can’t wait for Summer Term when we shall be doing plenty of cricket, athletics and tennis.
