6 JANUARY 2025
Message from the Headmaster
Welcome back to everyone this week and I am delighted to see that the pupils have returned with great energy and enthusiasm for the start of what promises to be busy Spring term. Year 9 and 10 have been diligently focused on assessments throughout the week and have been reminded about keeping the exams in perspective. I’m sure they will enjoy a welcomed break this weekend. Year 11 will begin their GCSE mock examinations on Monday with continued access rearrangements by the Sports Hall, predominantly at pick up times. Thank you for your help and assistance in ensuring we keep any disruption in that area to a minimum over the next two weeks.
There is a save the date notice in the Chronicle this week for our Year 10 pupils. In February, pupils will be able to experience A Day in the Life at the Effingham Trust Sixth Form with an event planned for parents to join them that evening.
Congratulations to Year 11 pupils James O and Jake B who represented Harlequins U16 Academy against Bath during the holidays. Both players had great performances against a very good Bath side.
Finally, our facilities team have been gritting key areas due to the cold snap this week; please can I ask you to be diligent about using the footpaths in the car park at all times to ensure we keep everyone safe at school.
This Week
A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew
After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother.
This week we reflected on two words relating to the Epiphany.
The First word was Unexpected.
The three Wise men were seekers. We too this term must seek Jesus and find Him in unexpected places.
The second word is Gift.
The three wise men of course like all good visitors bring gifts. They come to the Christ Child to give their gift. Each gift is unique, important and has a distinct purpose. The same is true of us. We all bring our own gifts and talents into our school community. We too must recognise the gifts that we can offer. On arriving they realise that they have not come only to give but to also receive. To receive the great gift of God’s only begotten son, the Word made flesh. When we look to give we end up receiving.
