Message from the Headmaster

In recognition of Holocaust Memorial Day, assemblies this week were themed on remembrance and acceptance of all within our community. We were also fortunate to have a visit from author Mrs Nash who, with the assistance of Mr Jakubowski, spoke sincerely and sensitively about the work of St Maximilian Kolbe during the Holocaust.

Our school nurses took time this week to present to Year 7 about promoting a healthy lifestyle. They highlighted the key areas of eating nutritionally beneficial foods, getting an appropriate amount of sleep and completing enough exercise to maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Well done to all of the pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 who took part in UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge on Wednesday and to our U16 hockey team who emulated our U14 team by gaining a superb victory over Wellington College in the National Schools Cup this week.

Good luck to all those taking part in the Murray Cup against Rokeby this weekend with eight matches being hosted on the Henderson Fields. I’m sure it will once again be a closely contested competition against our local rivals –good luck to all those involved in the event.

Year 7 Healthy Lifestyles Session with our School Nurse Team

On Wednesday morning, Katie, one of our School Nurses spoke to Year 7 pupils about the importance of a balanced, healthy lifestyle, particularly with regard to healthy eating, exercise and the importance of good sleep.

She gave practical strategies to promote these positive habits and spoke from experience about the issues that can arise when they are not given priority.

This session was designed to supplement Year 7 PSHE lessons this term which are about achieving healthy lifestyles and promoting balance in our everyday lives.

Mrs Tindale, Head of Senior PSHE

This Week’s House Cup Winners
Congratulations to Morton House for gaining the highest number of merits this week in the Senior School.

The Murray Cup - Saturday 1st February

Sporting fixtures between Cranmore and Rokeby are remarkably long standing. The schools share a common set of sporting values. This trophy completes the circle of sporting competitions between the two schools following The Henkes Shield (Football) and The Phillips Travers Trophy (Cricket). Jake Murray left Rokeby in 2016 after captaining the 1st XV in his final year. His favourite team to play against was always Cranmore, hence the beginning of the Murray Cup. Annually, many matches are played between the two schools and in rugby, eight fixtures count towards this prestigious cup. These fixtures, age groups U9s to U13s, take place tomorrow morning on The Henderson. We wish everyone taking part the best of luck.

Last Saturday, we had six pupils from Year 8 through to Year 11 swim at the English Schools Secondary Individual Event at The Guildford Spectrum. All swimmers took part in an individual 100m event and there were some great swims with a couple of pupils making PB times in their races. Well done to Henry C (Year 8 – Butterfly), Gus E (Year 8 – Front Crawl), Daniel B (Year 9 –Backstroke), Theo L (Year 10 –Breaststroke), Jack P (Year 10 – Front Crawl), Jensen W (Year 11 – Front Crawl).

Hockey U16 National Cup vs Wellington College

The first ever Cranmore U16 1st XI hockey team took on Wellington College in the first round of the National Schools Cup. Cranmore started well, showcasing counterattacking hockey and multiple circle entries. Late on in the first half, Cranmore took the lead with a clinical finish from close range. The second half was a very even affair. Both teams had opportunities to score, with Wellington earning multiple penalty corners. However, another counterattacking move down the right-hand side of the pitch carved open the defence, with Adam H expertly cutting back inside and striking the ball first time past the keeper. This sealed a well-deserved 2-0 win for Cranmore after what was an entertaining game of hockey for all.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A Reading from the Gospel of Mark

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

“What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”

"You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptised with the baptism I am baptised with?”

“We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptised with the baptism I am baptised with, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Reflection

This week we reflected on Leadership and on the need to develop leadership skills. Each one of us has been given a gift by God, each of us has been given a specific purpose. As we approach the end of this week let us learn to recognise a little more the gifts that we have been given and think of ways we can use these gifts for our community. Monday 27th January marked the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Let us pray that the Hope and Peace of Christ grows in us and spills over into the communities we are a part of.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, You are the true King of peace. In You alone is found freedom.

Please free our world from conflict. Bring unity to troubled nations. Let Your glorious peace reign in every heart.

Sixth Form

Please see the invitation to our next Effingham Sixth Form Open Evening, for those currently in Year 10, to be held on Monday 24th February 2025 from 6pm to 7.30pm.
