CREATING PLACES THAT
SERVE
THE YEAR IS 2025. How has fire service changed? Has your department changed? How has your community changed? What new demands will you face?
Public Safety hinges upon training, preparedness, and readiness. The fire community has collectively witnessed changes that have affected best practices, departments, procedures, and facilities.
Will your next facility be ready?
ARE YOU READY? With the aging baby boomer generation and the cost of hospital visits increasing, there is a growing reliance on community paramedicine and triage access via local Fire and EMS.
Are you equipped to handle nonemergency situations at the station? Does your triage area have direct access from outside? Or does a potentially infected individual risk walking into the common areas of your station? Does your triage area have direct access to the bay for crisis scenarios? How many steps are required to access narcotics in storage? How are you logging who enters and exits the narcotics storage area? Will you be able to flex and expand as demand increases?

DESIGNING BEYOND FOUR WALLS Listening to our clients, we hear a consistent theme: “we need to train more. In response, we pioneered the Training by Design program in 1998, which continues to evolve today. Training by Design offers a more holistic approach to designing a new or renovated fire station by taking advantage of and enhancing the building and site for training opportunities. This allows personnel to train where they live and work, further preparing them to serve the community.
TRAINING BY DESIGN

Did you know that the money saved on the first on-site exercise in the Training Tower of the CR-designed Orange Township, OH Fire Headquarters paid for its inclusion in the facility?
CASE STUDY In Medfield, Massachusetts, the idea of sharing a facility is more than 37-years old. In 1962, the town opened its fire station, and in 1977 the town’s police department opened its part of the facility. For the 16 full-time police officers and part-time firefighters working in the building during that time, the arrangement worked well. It presented an opportunity to share real estate and resources, and to keep costs down for the small community. Move forward 37 years and the situation has changed. The town has grown to more than 12,500 people, and the same building now houses 18-22 full-time people in the police department and eight full-time and 15 part-time firemen. The fire chief’s office is a converted ladies’ restroom and the current holding cells don’t pass state inspection. The fire department stores one of its apparatus in the basement garage, and when the engine is started, the adjoining locker room and lunch room fill up with diesel exhaust…

As firefighters, we’ve had to get smarter and faster by necessity. Modern buildings are built to fall down and the contents in them are created with materials that burn faster. Unless we want them to fall down and burn around us, we have to train, and get smarter, quicker, and better at putting out the fires. -Chief Brian Russel Plainfield, IN Fire Dept.
