WHAT’S ON
CRASSH is in a very exciting transitional state. This term one of our major five-year projects will finish – The Bible and Antiquity in 19th-Century Culture. Biblant, as it is affectionately known, has been a striking success, with more than sixty publications to its name, with five of its post-docs already in further academic positions, and a string of wonderful meetings completed. It has been five years of intense, collaborative interdisciplinary work that has provided a paradigm for other groups. But new projects are arriving, with all the excitement of new relationship energy. First of all, a new five-year ERC-funded project, led by Christopher Clarke, will start. This will explore how policy makers can reach informed and intelligent decisions when qualitative and quantitative measures give you different evaluations of the same circumstances. Is there a sensible and coherent way of rationalizing such different measures, without just privileging one over the other? This project will link tightly with the current Limits of the Numerical project (funded by the ISRF) which is exploring how numerical systems of evaluation are having unintended effects in the National Health Service. We also have a new four-year Mellon-funded programme, led by Simon Goldhill, looking at Religious Diversity and University Responses. This project wants to find out how the secular university has – and can – deal with religion and its travails. Can we not do better than the Government’s current 'Prevent' strategy? All three projects are taking a serious researchled route towards a more intelligent understanding of public policy, and its consequences and instrumentality. To this end, we have also started a new series of lectures and seminars called the CRASSH Impact series, and this term we have a thrilling set of events on race, gender, law and policy, starring Patricia Williams, one of the most stirring theorists of law and race in the USA, along with Paul Gilroy, Britain's most distinguished theorist of race, and Heidi Mirza, a pioneering researcher into race, faith and gender. This should be a hot ticket!

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR On a different tack, Heonik Kwon is starting a four-year project on the Cold War era in Asia – which will also forge links with our CCK/ CHCI funded summer school designed to produce a more dynamic and interdisciplinary understanding of how China experienced the Second World War, led by Hans van de Ven. Along with Anastasia Piliavsky's research into democratic processes in India, these projects are part of our long-term interest in developing sophisticated research with regard to the so-called Global South. And our own team is changing too. We say a sad farewell to deputy director Tim Lewens, whose term of office has finished; he will be returning to HPS. We will be comforted, however, by the arrival of Jan-Melissa Schramm from English, who will take up the role of deputy director and see us through the next three years, which promise, thanks to national, international and local politics, to be more turbulent than once anticipated. Despite its ubiquity, stained glass has received surprisingly little attention from historians of art, religion, literature and culture. This conference aims to open up fresh perspectives on stained glass as an architectural, artistic, decorative, commemorative and devotional medium.

This conference explores the socio-material interfaces where waste meets politics in the present. It brings together a group of established and emergent waste scholars from across the social sciences to discuss the contemporary dynamics of waste and waste labour in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Five themed panels – on infrastructure, labour, circulation, elimination and reconceptualisation – provide a structure through which waste will be explored in all its complexity. This conference will combine intensive closed workshops with two public events on the topic of the assessing inequality. The first public event will be a keynote address by Alice O'Connor.
