Craven College Apprenticeships achieve above the national average year on year. Last year pass rates for students aged 16–19 years at Craven College were 88.5% compared to the National Average 74.0%. Businesses need employees who can combine technical knowledge with practical skills. Apprenticeships can help you to begin a career in a chosen industry, learn practical skills and achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning money. You will receive work-based training from your employer and will normally attend college one day a week. If you already have a job you may be eligible to receive free training and gain qualifications as an Apprentice. We can help you to find the kind of work you are looking for and provide the support and training necessary. Apprenticeships usually last between 12 and 24 months depending on your area of interest, ability and prior experience. Most Apprenticeships offer the potential to progress from a Level 2 Apprenticeship to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. You can then choose to progress onto Higher Education. On application you will be assigned an Apprenticeship Co-ordinator. Your co-ordinator will help you decide which Apprenticeship is right for you and help you find an appropriate employer. They will monitor your training and employment and support you throughout your Apprenticeship.

What is an Apprenticeship? Businesses need employees who can combine technical knowledge with practical skills. Apprenticeships are a route by which you can begin a career in a chosen industry, learn practical skills and achieve nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are government backed training schemes aimed primarily at people aged between 1625, and now, because of their success are being extended to cover a wider age group. You will receive work-based training from your employer and will normally attend college one day a week. You will study towards a nationally recognised qualification which will demonstrate your practical competency and knowledge in your chosen area. Are there different levels of Apprenticeships? Yes, there are two different levels of Apprenticeships available; Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships. We will help you choose the one that’s right for you based on your experience and the job opportunities within your chosen area. There may be Higher Level Apprenticeships available in the near future which will be equivalent to a Level 4 Foundation Degree.
How long do Apprenticeships take? There is no set time to complete an Apprenticeship as they vary widely in content and size. The length of time taken will depend on your ability, prior experience and your employer’s requirements. An Apprenticeship will usually take anything from 12 to 24 months at Level 2 and a direct Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship could take up to three years, so a large degree of commitment on your part is required. Do I need to be employed when starting my Apprenticeship? If you already have a job with a small company, large employer or within your family business, you may already be eligible for an Apprenticeship, however, you may be looking for a job. We can help you to successfully locate the kind of employment you are looking for and then provide the training necessary for the Apprenticeship. How do I get started on an Apprenticeship? You’ll need to think carefully about the field of work in which you want to train. It’s a good idea to discuss this with your parents or careers adviser at school. Once you have an idea of what your interests are you can contact us for more information and a chat about opportunities available.
How much will I get paid? You will be guaranteed a minimum wage of £2.60 p/h with some employers paying more based on experience. What qualifications do I get when I’ve finished my Apprenticeship? You’ll get a package of qualifications when you finish your Apprenticeship – normally an Apprenticeship involves a Diploma/ Certificate and sometimes an NVQ. These qualifications demonstrate your knowledge and practical competency. You will also leave with Functional Skills or Key Skills at an appropriate level and some apprentices will gain a Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) qualification. Any apprentice can choose additional courses or qualifications that complement their learning (subject to discussion with the college).
To study an Apprenticeship at Craven College you ideally will require three GCSEs grade A*-C. Alongside these general entry qualifications, each Apprenticeship may have its own specific entry requirements which are included on the following pages with each Apprenticeship. All Apprenticeships require an interview and experience will be taken into consideration. What sort of person is accepted on to an Apprenticeship? In addition to the above requirements, to do an Apprenticeship, you will need to be able to show that you can use your own initiative and have fully researched the career area you want to work in, and that you are the right person for the job.
You will need to be committed and willing to work. Working well on your own as well as in a team is another important requirement and you must be happy to work in both ways. As a student on an Apprenticeship you need to be realistic about the amount of work you may have to do and you should be prepared for further study. Additional Study With every Apprenticeship additional study includes Functional Skills in English and Maths Some Apprentices will also carry out Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and also the Employee Rights and Responsibilities Work book. You will also need to be aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who employs you.
Can I progress on to Further or Higher Education? Most Apprenticeships offer a potential progression from Level 2 to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. Advanced apprentices can progress onto a Level 4 industry qualification or higher education qualification such as a such as a HNC/D or a Foundation Degree.

At 19 years old, Scott Jones was an A-level student at Craven College and after his first year, he decided that this was not the right path for him. With the help of the college’s Student Services team, Scott explored a few different options but decided that his real desire was to get practical experience in the workplace whilst continuing his education.

“No employer, or very few, seem to want people with no experience and it seemed logical to me that an Apprenticeship gets you on the career ladder.” After an interview with an Apprenticeship Advisor at Craven College, Scott made the decision to go for a Business Administration Apprenticeship. “Business Administration appealed to me because it offered a wide range of experience in various areas, allowing me to gain a variety of business skills without committing to a specific option.” Scott went on to gain employment with Virtual College, an on-line training provider in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. After a trial period with the company, his employers and tutors identified that Scott had a lot of potential and was capable of doing more. Scott agreed to the challenge and stepped up his responsibilities at work and took on a direct Advanced Apprenticeship.

AAT Accountancy Levels 2 Certificate & 3 Diploma Course Length: 15–18 months
Entry Requirements
Whether it’s sole traders, small businesses, global, companies or Government, accountants are at the heart of all business operations, recording all income and expenditure and helping clients keep control of the budget. This could be your first step towards becoming a Chartered Accountant. At college you will learn basic book-keeping skills, application of numbers and the use of accountancy software. You will be recording and accounting for cash and credit transactions and recording payroll transactions. You could work in a variety of roles and will need to be able to work as part of a team and have good communication skills.

Agriculture is a core industry and because Craven College serves a large rural area we understand the needs of the workforce from the traditional smaller farm, or specialist farm with rare breeds to the large commercial farm with a variety of animals and crops. Your day will start early and normally involve working with livestock or perhaps just crops if you work on an arable farm. The work is very interesting, varied and rewarding but be prepared for long days and working in all weather conditions.

The horticulture industry offers many opportunities from planting, growing, potting and cultivating plants, to designing, creating and maintaining soft and hard landscaping. Horticulture is ideal for those who like working outdoors, usually as part of a small team. You could be working for a large organisation or a council doing grounds maintenance or working for a smaller company maintaining planting schemes and building paths, fences and patios in domestic gardens. It has the appeal of being varied, seldom long in the same location and providing you with a good understanding of grounds development and maintenance.

As male grooming increases in popularity, so do the opportunities to work in this area. The Barbering Apprenticeship will equip you to carry out customer consultations; prepare, cut and style hair as well as facial shaving and the preparation of chemicals for hair colouring. You may be working in a barber’s shop that offers male grooming or working for a top class hairdresser at the cutting edge of style. This Advanced Apprenticeship covers the installation, maintenance and repair of electrotechnical equipment – from installing electrical systems inside a new building to maintaining machinery on a production line. The electrotechnical industry plays a key role in other industries – eg. construction, engineering, manufacturing – and electricians use specialist skills to tackle a variety of projects from new buildings to maintenance and restoration of listed buildings.

This Apprenticeship provides you with the skills needed for a career in hairdressing. Interacting with clients, hair preparation and keeping the salon looking good are all activities which will help you fully experience the day to day needs of a busy salon. You will help with the running of salons by shampooing, conditioning, drying, cutting and colouring hair. Learning how to deal with customers is central, good communication skills are important.
