miragaia

the new waterfront 2005/2006 | multifct. building+students residence | porto | prof. carla garrido | fauporto | ines sousa | cravoycanelagmail.com

Miragaia = Beholding gaia, a longitudinal platform alongside the river with a privelieged view, opposing Gaia’s riverside, with its old wine cellars and distilleries . A medieval lasting background regarding the material and historical descendence of the city, turns the plot into a symbolicaly charged context to operate. Alfandega –Tol – and Museum/Historical Train Terminal add the context some spice, bringing out newer references to the approaching strategie. The first is contiguous to the site area; the second is no more than a project that was never built but that had to be considered has a part of the program.

Program Architectural analysis of the context and options of design – the place, the building and the city : design and place; design and distory; design, language and construction. The reordering of an old area of the city, easily identifiable, with the proposal of buildings of variable dimension and complexity and also with programs of small equipments (shops, cafÊs and bars).

Proposal The Multifunctional building was developed in a more “poetical form. The aim was to create a volume that could on one hand project itself to the main street, providing a vision of the sharp declive of the city, and on the other hand allowing a unic view of the platform, the river and landscape of the other side of the river. The functions are marked through its openings orientation.

The public space is treated to enhance the longitudinal routings along the river. The Residence, with a more formalist approach, has a contained entrance that blossoms to a double height, inviting to the interior, where stands out the corridor of distribution witch is a reference from Adalberto Dias’ Mechanical Engineering Department in Aveiro.

Walking through these corridors, there is a game of rhythms between columns, entrances and vertically enhanced walls such as Corbusier’s walls in La Tourrette. The students dwelling module develops in a duplex with illuminated stairs through a skylight that is a reference of the Portuguese XVII century skylights.

The common spaces are filtered with a fixed brisesoleil, another reference of Souto Moura’s Geoscience department in Aveiro. The balance between the two buildings is established with the stereotomy and the big ramps that make a dialog of crossing flows on opposite directions.

matosinhos a museum for the city

2007/2008 | matosinhos, portugal | museum | prof. carlos prata | fauporto | ines sousa | cravoycanela@gmail.com

A place in profound transformation that needs elements of reference and exception, because it is an old area of fishing industry that is now obsolete and is reappearing as a luxurious residential area. An exception program, like a Museum, helps to redefine and punctuate the emerging urban space.

Program

Urban public program with meaningful programmatic and contextual complexity. The challenge is to make and conform the architecture of the urban equipment , clearly establishing on the drawing of the design its spatial and formal repercussions on the urban context that will help to transform it.

Proposal

A Museum for the city, being the main program two temporary small exibition rooms. The plot fits in a rectangular block, defined by the Matosinhos grid, close to the coast, and with a clear diagonal exception of an old train line. The proposal is based on a stablishment aligned by the Northen street faรงade, following the perimeter of the block.

Formaly it’s a parallelepipe that breaks down in two volums, being the smaller volume suspended, supporting apparently only in one pillar , marking the entrance. The public program develops on the larger volume and the administrative program on the smaller. On the ground-floor you find the atrium, with a double height and a skylight that illuminates it and all the surrounding circulation spaces.

The constructive solution is based on a metallic structure majorly composed by trusses. This solution was chosen to make the building lighter, because there is a big number of large openings and also the smaller volume is suspense, supporting only in one column and on a structure of two trusses that develop until the middle of the building loading in a concrete foundation. The ground-floor is made of concrete and the rest of the floors are made of metallic beams and columns.

Through the atrium is perceived the cafeteria that connects directly with the exterior as the bookshop that is turned to the main street. An imposing staircase connects the atrium to the first floor and guides a routing to the exhibition rooms. The rest of the public spaces develop around the atrium.

venlo

alive and kicking forever young 2009 | venlo, netherlands | terraventure competition | second prize | tudelft | basti ,ines ,nikolas ,max | cravoycanela@gmail.com

Venlo needs a joyful place that provides opportunities for unexpected occasions and future potentials. Attracting creative minds and dynamic forces that occupy and transform the city is our main ambition. We focus on young people and upcoming generations. Education, start up oďŹƒces, sport and leisure facilities as well as the proximity to the city centre give our target group a base. Large public functions, carefully placed in playful tension, invite surrounding fluxes of people to an exciting manifold mix of situations. Young people will play a more relevant role in Venlo and get rooted into its growing process from the beginning.

Baracks vs. large functions Military monuments define the main character of the space. New large scale functions are pressing on the local atmosphere. Respectfully the old structures get introduced into a new order. All Monuments take part of the new identity. The former military exercise area becomes the new central square. The former military hospital and hall form the new college. The little and lonely monuments are enforced and transformed into strong urban forms, to be able to compete with the new big functions, added to the site.

connecting city parts and functions The plot is part of a planned ring road, connecting important nodes. Venlo and Blerick get better connected due to a new pedestrian and bike bridge. This bridge is arranged in a way, connecting all important functions of the city.

plot organisation

The connection path between Blerick and the old city center divides the plot into two parts. Situated at an urban border, the large scale functions are placed to the peripheral surrounding in an open space. On the other side a dense urban core is created, containing housing, offices and public functions, relating to Venlo and Blerick. A central square connects it all together.

The college integrates and connects old monuments and appears as a single unit. A large court yard provides spaces for future expansions.

stadium

The stadium located in a green environment stands out as a recognizable element, visible from the other side of the river. It easily accessible from the the city center, the train station and the nearby parking lot. By lowering the football field and lifting up the upper ranks, view connections at ground level are enabled and a connection with the nature gets established.

dense core This residential area combines a variety of functions concerning young people’s life. A mix of shared flat communities, start–up offices, and nice court yards define its character.

housing Why housing? Alive and kicking wants to enforce the next step into the unexpected. A new beginning on this area. A new quarter with new impulses for the city, creative minds with fresh ideas. Though for a new quarter there need to be new people which need to identify with their quarter as the city itself. We want a vibrant joyful place with an authentic local character and not a dead event city.

Casa da MĂşsica, Casa da MĂşsica Metro Station and the Roundabout of Boavista are the urban elements transforming the site on concern in a tension field of pedestrian paths crossing inwards. Therefore, its reformulation urges, so as to contemplate a comercial + residential program, giving special attention to public and private domains.

Program

Collective Housing : Design and Construction Association of flats: 3 Distribuition solutions: Central Access, Deck Access and Direct Access. Urban restructuring and completion of an area in transformation.

Proposal

The proposal area is delimited by two public buildings that re-qualified this urban site: Casa da MĂşsica (Rem Koolhaas) and Casa da MĂşsica Metro Station (Souto de Moura). The urban restructuration aim is to counterbalance the strength of the iconic building in search of the reestablishment of the existing harmony that was broken by its strong volumetric presence.

It is highlighted a path that establishes a pedestrian connection between the metro station and the roundabout of Boavista, wide openning an initially closed space, with the purpose of redefining the interior patio, reinforcing the connection of the surrounding public spaces, therefore increasing the site’s urban life. A section of the intervention area is detailed, composed of a collective housing program with Deck Access system.
