KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
KEVIN EBI – YEAR OF THE EAGLE
Professional nature photographer Kevin Ebi documented a year in the lives of Puget Sound-area bald eagles – one of the few eagle populations that doesn’t migrate. The resulting book “Year of the Eagle” tells the story of how an eagle family works together to pass on essential life skills to their young. Through a collection of stunning imagery, Kevin shows how the eaglets develop and learn to fly, survive their first winter in the upper Skagit, and learn to hunt in Hood Canal. Based in Lynnwood, Kevin’s work has appeared in National Geographic, Smithsonian, National Wildlife, and on a U.S. postage stamp. Kevin will be selling and signing books during the Keynote event. Doors open at 7pm at the Edmonds Plaza Room, 650 Main Street. ◆ FREE 9/14 F 7:30-9pm
EDMONDS MARSH, HATCHERY & POINT EDWARDS WALK
We will bird the Willow Creek Fish Hatchery and the Wildlife Habitat & Native Plant Demonstration Garden. From there it is only a short walk up to a paved trail for a good view of the marsh from the south and a couple of ponds. We’ll look for small birds among the bushes covering the hillside. We will drive between the marsh and the hatchery/garden area. The walk, led by local experienced birders (Saturday) joined by Noah Strycker on Sunday will be less than a mile of easy walking with a little uphill. Playback might be used by walk leader. If there is time, there may be an option to bird the waterfront to see the Heerman’s Gulls and other waterbirds. Bring binoculars. Pre-registration is required. ◆ 6807 9/15 Sat 7:30-10am $5 ◆ 6808 9/16 Sun 7:30-10am $10

SATURDAY OPENING SPEAKER:
NOAH STRYCKER – BIRDING WITHOUT BORDERS AN EPIC WORLD BIG YEAR
Kick off our all-day Bird Fest celebration at the Frances Anderson Center with Noah Strycker, who in 2015 became the first human to see more than half of the planet’s bird species in a single, year-long, round-theworld birding trip. Anything could have happened, and a lot did. He was scourged by blood-sucking leeches, suffered fevers and sleep deprivation, survived airline snafus and car breakdowns and mudslides and torrential floods, skirted war zones, and had the time of his life. Birding on seven continents and carrying only a pack on his back, Strycker enlisted the enthusiastic support of local birders to tick more than 6,000 species. This humorous and inspiring presentation about Strycker’s epic World Big Year will leave you with a new appreciation for the birds and birders of the world. ◆ FREE 9/15 Sat 10:45-11:45am

PUGET SOUND BIRD FEST
WATERFRONT WALK W/ NOAH STRYCKER
While it is not the time of year when we see the most diversity we can often see seabirds very close along the Edmonds waterfront. Edmonds also hosts several hundred Heerman’s Gulls who disperse north after breeding before they go south to their wintering grounds. Purple Martins that nest nearby may also be seen, as well as a host of other waterbirds. ◆ 6814 9/15 Sat 5-6:30pm $10
DIGISCOPING WORKSHOP (AGES 12+)
Join expert birder and Leica representative Jeff Bouton to learn the ins and outs of digiscoping. Digiscoping is a convenient and effective way to capture quality photos of far away birds without the need for a long telephoto lens. Birders can simply couple an ordinary digital camera (even your phone) to a spotting scope to achieve stunning images. During this workshop, Jeff will cover the equipment basics of a good digiscoping set-up, and share some tried and true techniques guaranteed to take your digiscoping to the next level. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. ◆ 6812 9/16 Sun 8-10am $5
PUGET SOUND BIRDING CRUISE (AGES 8+)
Small boats will go out from the Port of Edmonds for two hours, courtesy of volunteer members of the Edmonds Yacht Club. A birding guide will accompany participants on each boat. We’ll explore the nearshore waters of Puget Sound, looking for Marbled Murrelets, gulls, terns, and other migrating and resident sea birds. Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Meet at the Edmonds Marina at 7:30am – boats will depart at 8am. Print out and bring your waiver (given at registration), which will serve as your boarding pass. In the event that windy conditions cause cancellation of the cruise, guides will lead a walk along the waterfront and marsh. Space is limited and preregistration is required. ◆ 6811 9/16 Sun 8-10am $10

PICKLE-BALL CLINICS
Pickle-ball is the fastest growing sport in America. Why? Because it is fun, great exercise, social, easy on the joints, and simple to learn. Congressman Joel Pritchard and two friends created the game about 50 years ago when kids going out to play badminton could not find the birdies. However, they did find the net, a wiffle ball, and some ping-pong paddles. Little did they know a new sport would be born. Come learn the basics of the game, get exercise, and - most importantly - have fun! Balls and paddles provided.
