a note from the staff...

T

hanksgiving means different things to different people. For some, Thanksgiving is a time for family and the delicious foods, brought out only once a year. Others crowd around the TV to watch the Macy’s Day Parade or spend hours planning out their attack on stores during Black Friday. But to most, Thanksgiving is a time to pause and recognize all that we are fortunate enough to have. This issue, our biggest issue ever, is full of great ideas to make each day of this Thanksgiving weekend awesome. And while it is exciting, it is also bittersweet. This is the last issue of Craze for the semester, and possibly for the year. Craze Magazine has come a long way since its start, but we couldn’t have done it without the support of our amazing readers, families, sponsers and friends. On behalf of the Craze staff, thank each and every one of you, and have a happy Thanksgiving!

cinema: new films

O

n Craze, we are so thankful for entertainment. Without it, our magazine wouldn’t be half as fun. Family, friends and food are often what people say when asked what they’re thankful for, but entertainment can be important as well. Here are some movies to keep you entertained with your family this Thanksgiving weekend, and you can even eat some yummy food at the movie theater.

Marilyn Monroe was an American figure of glamour, but people all over the world have been fascinated with her history. “My Week with Marilyn” attempts to show one week of Marilyn Monroe’s life in which she was escorted around Britain by a young assistant, Colin Clark, while filming “The Prince and the Showgirl”. The film is based on two books written by Clark, but the film may fully depict what happened in 1957. Rather than focusing on the facts and actual history, the plot is only roughly based on what happened; it appears the film is very romanticized. Reviews have so far been less than glowing, saying the film is cliche and superficial. However, Michele Williams performance as Monroe has gotten a warm reception. The “Blue Valentine” actress seems to make the movie with her utter class and feyness similar to that of Monroe’s. The film will be a nice romantic drama but it’s not destined for the success comparable to the original Monroe films.

hugo

the muppets

It’s not easy being green, and it won’t be easy to not see “The Muppets”. We all grew up with the classic Muppets characters and so did our parents before us. Now “The Muppets” can bring the furry little creatures into the lives of our younger family members. It’s the first Disney-produced Muppets film in 15 years since “Muppet Treasure Island”. The plot is about oil being discovered beneath the Muppet Theater and the Muppets needed to raise money to save the theater. The Muppets have the help of the world’s biggest Muppet fan Gary (Jason Segal) and his girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams). A live-action Muppets movie may lack appeal to teenager views like myself, but with Jason Segel as both a primary writer and actor in the film, it sure will get a few laughs out of me. “The Muppets” will definitely make kids smile with the usual shenanigans, but I think the whole family will enjoy it too. Thanksgiving weekend is a time for family, so introduce your youngest members of you family to the oldest: the Muppets.

An orphan boy, an unknown life, an unusual girl, and an unbelievable adventure. “Hugo” is a new 3D adventure family film based on the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Award winning author, Brian Selznick, created original illustrations that were used as a layout for the film sets. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese and partly produced by Johnny Depp so it’s sure to be a box-office success. Hugo is an orphan boy living in the walls of a Paris train station who meets a girl, and a man who runs a toy store, which leads him into a magical adventure. Details of the plot line are a mystery but the cinematography is sure to be cool. The films visual appeal is reported to be like that of early silent films, using somber tones to represent 1930’s Paris. The mysterious yet childlike story line will appeal to kids, while the complex filming will appeal to more experienced moviegoers. “Hugo” is sure to make a huge impact this Thanksgiving weekend.

mixtape

>>> tunes to hear

a playlist of craze magazine staff’s favorite songs and artists designed by eva phillips

1

Defiance - Incubus: Recommended by Samie Steed

2

Middle Middle - Daphne Loves Derby: Recommended by Jill Hoppe

3 4

“It’s my most played song on iTunes because I love the lyrics and the simplistic music that make it easy to listen to and sing along with. I love the theme of rebellion and defiance.”

“It has a really unique sound to it and it’s a catchy song. The vocals are really strong and go with the style of music really well.”

Our Song - Taylor Swift: Recommended by Leanna Klemisch

“I like it because its a catchy tune and it always gets stuck in my head. Also, her songs are always so meaningful.”

Sasha Don’t Sleep - The Dance Party: Recommended by Tyler Schank

“The Dance Party is a relatively new band with more of a nineties sound. Their songs are upbeat and fun. Can’t go wrong with a dance party, right?”

5

Shuffle - Bombay Bicycle Club: Recommended by Cassie McCormick

6

Our Song - The Spill Canvas: Recommended by Alycia Olson

06

“This song is easy to dance to and has an easy beat to follow. It has a piano part that is sort of hectic and crazy but my life right now is pretty crazy so I can relate.”

“I think this song describes a lot of teenage girls. We think our love story is some epic tale, but in reality it’s just another love song. It’s a very realistic song that’s not too harsh, and is very catchy.”

7

Everlasting Light - The Black Keys: Recommended by Laurel Oetken

8

All About Us - He is We (Ft. Owl City): Recommended by Jordan Meradith

9

White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes: Recommended by Lilly Phillips

“I think its something different than what everyone else is listening to. It kind of reminds me of some of the music that you would hear from the 60’s/70’s rather than all of the rap and techno music that is currently popular.”

“The lyrics are really adorable and heartfelt. It’s a catchy song, and although the topic is kinda cliche, the lyrics themselves aren’t.”

7

10

You Don’t Know Me - Ben Folds & Regina Spektor: Recommended by Kate Laing 9

11

“My favorite song at the moment is White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes. Its so ethereal sounding and raw. The vocals are perfectly layered and the instrumentals are artistically balanced. It is creative, catchy, upbeat chill music.”

“The paired voices of Ben Folds and Regina Spektor mesh together perfectly with the upbeat music. The conversational tone of the song is honest and raw and the two artists have a distinct sound unlike any other collaboration I’ve heard.”

You Are the Best Thing - Ray LaMontagne: Recommended by Mr. Moseley

“What’s not to love? Strong start. Raspy voice. Strong instrumentals. Great in concert, relaxing with an adult beverage, or on a road trip.”

12

Someone Like You - Adele: Recommended by Megan Ulrich

13

How To Save a Life - The Fray: Recommended by Megan North

14

“Adele has a one of a kind voice that is really powerful. Although this song may be overplayed on several radio stations, it seems to never get old for me.”

“Every song by The Fray is tied to a memory, for me. It may not be new, but it reminds me of all the people I’m thankful for. In their second album, the fray’s music evolved into something more fast-paced, and with their next album coming out soon and we’ll see where they go next.”

Why Won’t You Make Up Your Mind - Tame Impala: Recommended by Eva Phillips “Tame Impala has one of the most entrancing and unique sounds of any band I know. Their vocals are hypnotic, and acompanied by electronic synthesizers, gauzy lo-fi guitars, and unconventional drum beats, creating a layered yet somehow chill sound.”

In 1957, it rained so much that Popeye’s hat filled with water and kept dumping water on spectators.

Due to a helium shortage in 1958, balloons were inflated with air and hung from cranes.

The longest balloon ever recorded was Spider-Man, which was 78 feet long.

he Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a timehonored tradition, starting back in 1924. Now, over 44 million people watch the parade on television each year. Every parade features balloons, floats, and of course, top-notch performers. Many celebrities have made parade appearances in the past and the dancers and musicians are all carefully selected. Being chosen to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the opportunity of a lifetime, an opportunity that sophomore Logan Graeve is not about to pass up. Graeve is a competitive dancer at On Pointe Dance Centre. She has been dancing for eight years and has a true passion for dance. Graeve and the other dancers in her troupe were selected to perform in the Spirit of America dance this year. The selection process for the performers of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is intense. It takes a very advanced dance troupe to pass all of the criteria required to perform in the parade. “While we were competing the people saw us and liked the way that we danced and behaved ourselves so [the scouts for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade] requested us,” Graeve said. Being handpicked to perform a jazz dance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is quite an honor. Graeve and the other 600 dancers from around the country are thrilled to be performing in the Spirit of America production. That may sound like a lot of dancers, but considering the amount of dance studios in Nebraska alone, this group is a select few. They are

talented and ready for choreography that is beautiful, and challenging; as well as an extremely hectic schedule. “Our dancers were given the choreography two weeks ago and are responsible for knowing it before they go to New York City,” Mandy Talmadge, Graeve’s dance instructor and owner of On Pointe Dance Centre, said. “Once we arrive in New York City they rehearse every day until the day of the parade. They will even have a rehearsal for NBC right on the street in front of Macy’s on the Monday night before Thanksgiving.” This years Thanksgiving Day Parade will feature nine performance groups. Graeve and her fellow dancers will be dancing in the Spirit of America production. The Spirit of America production has provided over 22,000 dancers and cheerleaders with the opportunity to perform on live television in the parade. Graeve is thrilled with the opportunity to perform in this production. “I am really excited to go to New York and get the opportunity to dance with all these people but I am also extremely nervous to be performing on television,” Graeve said. Nerves are to be expected, however Graeve has a large support team to back her up. Her instructor is probably the most proud. “I am looking forward most to seeing my girls perform with the excitement of the event on their faces,” Talmadge said. “They all have worked hard and deserve the opportunity.”

Watch for Logan Graeve in the Spirit of America performance in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, live from 9 a.m. to noon on NBC.

planning: black friday

store bought chaos it’s friday, friday, time to shop on friday story and design by laurel oetken

I

t’s 3:30 in the morning and your alarm is buzzing. Last night, after getting your fill of turkey and stuffing, you spent countless hours with your cousins going through piles of coupons and ads from different stores. You devised a plan to get the most shopping done in the shortest amount of time at the places with the best deals. The first stop you plan to make is at the mall (where the best deals always are) and then maybe a trip downtown to Urban Outfitters if you have the stamina. You’ve been preparing for the big moment when you get to run through the mall doors, and now that moment is finally here. It’s Black Friday. Black Friday shopping is a tradition

we are all too familiar with. It’s the only day of the year where millions of people try to get their holiday shopping done to avoid stress shopping in December. Ads for Black Friday generally come out ahead of time so that shoppers can find the best deals and know where they want to shop. To get the best deals, check online at your favorite stores and in the World Herald to see what discounts and deals you can get. Our ultimate gift guide can also come in handy when picking out the best gifts for the members of your family. Decide ahead of time if you want to participate in Black Friday so you know your battle plan.

It’s really hard to get up in the morning but it pays off in the end to get good deals. - freshman hayley krumwiede

Black Friday shopping is crazy and really intense. It’s like being at Disney World because there are so many people running around trying to find anything that they can get a good deal on. - sophomore hannah shaw

hanksgiving weekend is jam packed with many activities: football games, cooking, family, decorating, eating and, of course, shopping. Black Friday shoppers get up way before the average person (or even the sun for that matter). While hitting the mega sales and buying the perfect gift for that special someone, or maybe even treating yourself, can be a blast, Thanksgiving is the perfect time to be reminded that there are many people out there who are less fortunate. If curling up on the couch with leftover turkey and your laptop is more your style than mass chaos at four in the morning, or if the cash you didn’t spend at the department store is burning a hole in your pocket, one of these gifts might be perfect for you. Each one dedicates a portion of the proceeds to a charity, and they are the perfect way to get someone a gift while donating to a good cause. You were not about to fill yourself with turkey and mashed potatoes for the third day straight. Instead, you could head over to Starbucks and order this delicious blend of flavorings. The customers who’ve joined the secret drink society swear it tastes just like the cereal.

I mentioned a couple more ‘secret’ drinks: chocolate Dalmatian latte? Captain Crunch frappuccino? He gave me a blank stare, as if I was speaking in a foreign language. After a short internal debate, he turned on his heel and strode purposefully through a silver door, his voice trailing after him. “I know who would know what you’re talking about,” he said. After a couple of moments, he returned with a 1-800 number that I could call for more information, explaining that he couldn’t tell me anything else. I could tell

he was hiding something. It wasn’t as if I had asked for the secret recipe of their mouthwatering pumpkin scones, or adorable cake balls. I’d simply heard rumors of a secret menu, and wanted to know whether such a thing really existed – and possibly order a Triple C latte, while I was at it. Though the barista seemed like he had more to say, he simply shook his head. Yes, they catered to almost anything a customer asked for, but he couldn’t say whether certain items did or did not exist. While Starbucks may tirelessly deny the existence of a secret menu, we still believe many of the speculated drinks sound delicious. Try asking for these combinations the next time you can barely drag yourself out of bed in the morning.

D

uring this season of family-get-togethers, being thankful, and stuffing yourself with delicious homemade food, we sometimes forget about those who are in more need than ourselves. Throughout our city on Thanksgiving there are thousands of people who can barely afford to feed their own families on a normal basis. There are those who don’t even have a family to spend the holiday with. On Black Friday, some brokenhearted parents are reminded that they will barely be able to buy gifts for their children this Christmas. Thankfully, there are wonderful organizations, including Westside’s own Service Learning Council, in our community that dedicate themselves to help these people, and you can help them reach their goals. Service Learning Council not only takes part in local organizations, but even goes on a yearly trip across the United States to help another city. However, if you’d rather take part individually, here are some charities and organizations that you can help give back to this Thanksgiving season.

Heartland Hope Mission is a charity that feeds, clothes, and cares for families that come from lowincome households that struggle to meet everyday needs of life. The goal of the Mission is to provide these families with enough food to last them each week, with three meals a day, including holidays. Clothing is made available for all families in need of it, as well as free toys for children and household. Personal hygienic necessities such as shampoo, toothbrushes, and deodorant, are also made available. All items come from donations made by the community.

InCOMMON is an organization that was founded to help neighborhoods in certain “high risk” areas with crime and poverty. It’s based on the belief that a strong neighborhood community can improve the life of the residents living there. The mission is to try to stop these risks from actually happening by stopping them before they get out of control. By working together as a community, inCOMMON hopes to bring neighborhoods closer together than they were before and improve the quality of life for residents.

t’s the time of year where your skin loses moisture and becomes dry because of the cold winter air. It’s smart to turn to lotions or lip balm in order to assist in soothing the red, itchy skin, however those products can sometimes be pricy. Instead, consider creating your own simple beauty and body products to alleviate the dryness. The delicious cranberry lip gloss is reminiscent of the holidays, and the applesauce mask is incredibly refreshing. The milk hand lotion is one of the best natural ways to nourish winter skin, and the brown sugar scrub smells simply divine.
