16th June, 2015 Reflection The Mustard Seed ‘The mustard seed, the smallest of all the seeds, grows into the biggest shrub of all.’ (from Mark 4:31) He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’ There are moments when we encounter you in the small and the ordinary, moments of grace when we glimpse you in what is earthy and transitory: in a glance, a sound, a symbol, a touch, in the fleeting moment filled with infinite grace, in the parables as we hear them again, and remember that, in these small things, we find echoes of your Kingdom. Oh God, from everlasting to everlasting, from whom we come and to whom we go, we have come to this day and we give you praise, Amen.

The main aim of the survey is to identify factors that contribute to the organisational health of your child’s/ children’s school and provide valuable information about what is going well and not so well and the ways in which this may be improved and built upon. We are consulting families to gather your input to shape the future development of our school. Although we strongly encourage you to complete the survey, your participation is voluntary. If you are willing to complete the survey please email: kmatthews@crcmelton.com.au to receive the survey information.

MindMatters

Performing Arts Gala

Last week a team of staff and parents attended a workshop on how to implement MindMatters within our school community. We discussed throughout the day how MindMatters can be used in schools and the importance of having mental health programs in place. Mental health is not about illness but about being in a good place mentally. It involves the ability to bounce back, deal with challenges that we all face in our day-to-day lives and be resilient.

As the opening night for this year’s Performing Arts Gala draws closer, it is timely to remind the College community of the performance dates, which are Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th September. The Food Tech and Hospitality staff and students shall again be supporting the performing arts by serving hors-d'oeuvres prior to the performance and the Visual Art department shall install an art exhibition within the foyer of the Performing Arts Centre.

The framework is about young people; their health and wellbeing. It helps schools to support young people to achieve their goals, build relationships and cope with challenges. It aims to promote mental health, prevent problems and enable early intervention. The core components of the program centre on creating a positive school community, developing resilience skills in our students, providing support to parents and families and supporting students experiencing mental health difficulties.

Tickets for the Performing Arts Gala shall go on sale early in Term 3. Please note, that the seating for this year’s performance shall be allocated. As such, patrons are advised to book early to ensure that they are able to secure consecutive seating for their party of guests.

The benefits of home-school partnerships are apparent, with research consistently finding that teacher and family relationships are important for young people’s social and emotional wellbeing, and academic achievement. The development of positive relationships between families and school staff takes effort from both parties, and typically develops over time, rather than over a single event. When parents and school staff communicate about concerns they have with young people, it can be easy to forget about the strengths of the student and to focus only on problems and negative behaviours. By keeping the student central to the discussion, it will ensure that their needs, developmental stage, strengths and perspective will be considered. The transition to adolescence involves significant changes for young people as well as their parents and carers. New parenting demands require parents and carers to adapt their parenting. Many parents and carers are able to do this well, but for some the young person’s striving for autonomy can be seen as disobedience or rejection. Here at CRC we offer a number of programs and invite organisations into the College that are designed to support good mental health. I have referred to the website links on our intranet in the past as a source of information for parents and students. We will continue to keep you informed of the progress of the implementation of the MindMatters framework. Robert Blackley Deputy Principal (Students)

The Performing Arts Team have been working tirelessly with the cast of dancers, singers and musicians and we look forward to a highly entertaining and engaging performance that will build on the success of previous works created by this team of dedicated staff.
