18th November, 2014 Reflection “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. (from Thomas Merton; A Prayer of Trust)

White Ribbon Day November 25

End of Year Arrangements Year 7-9

In Australia, one in three women have experienced physical or sexual assault in her lifetime. These women are our mothers, girlfriends, wives, daughters, colleagues and friends. The mission of White Ribbon Day is to change the attitudes and behaviours that support or excuse this violence against women in Australia. The United Nations has declared this day for the Elimination of Violence against women.

White Ribbon Day November 25 In Australia, one in three women have experienced physical or sexual assault in her lifetime. These women are our mothers, girlfriends, wives, daughters, colleagues and friends. The mission of White Ribbon Day is to change the attitudes and behaviours that support or excuse this violence against women in Australia. The United Nations has declared this day for the Elimination of Violence against women. White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end men’s violence against women and girls and to promote gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity. White Ribbon Australia, as part of this global movement, aims to create an Australian society in which all women can live in safety, free from violence and abuse. The White Ribbon Campaign objectives are to: 

 

Create widespread awareness of the positive role that men can play in stopping violence against women; Enable leadership, particularly by men and boys, to bring about social change, and; Build collective knowledge and understanding of the effective prevention of violence against women.

Here at CRC white ribbons will be on sale and a sausage sizzle is planned for November 25, all proceeds raised will be donated to the White Ribbon Campaign. The wearing of a white ribbon is a personal pledge that the wearer does not excuse violence against women, and is committed to supporting community action and attitudinal and behavioural change to stop violence by men against women. All men and boys of the College can make a stand about violence against women by taking the oath online http://www.whiteribbon.org.au/standup Last Thursday Leading Constable Jo Mutsaerts from Victoria Police spoke to the Year 9 students as a follow up to what I put in the newsletter last week regarding underage drinking and partying and issues arising of sexting and sexual offences. The focus was not on “this is the law” but on the importance of good decision making, respect for others and looking after each other. It was through her presentation that Year 9 students are being invited to a leadership role in promoting White Ribbon Day.

The following are websites and contact phone number Constable Mutsaerts shared with the students: http://djhs.com.au/specialist-allied-community-health/ counselling-melton-youth-health-clinic.html http://westcasa.org.au 6801 Youth Outreach 9743 6801- free pick up service to provide safe transport home to young people who feel vulnerable and unsafe to walk home or who do not have any alternative safe transport options. Robert Blackley Deputy Principal Year 9 Visual Communication and Design Year Nine students studying Visual Communication and Design have been working on an advertising poster centered around a fictitious play based on a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Following the Design Brief, they had to research Conan Doyle's work, collect relevant images and text, and using Adobe Photoshop, manipulate the images and text to reflect their knowledge of the Elements and Principles of Design. Below are just a few examples of what they produced. Edwina La Rose Visual Communication and Design Teacher

Year 8 Premier League

Year 9 Students - 2nd Hand Book purchase for RE

Last week, the Year 8 Girls Volleyball team competed in the Grand Final against St Monica’s, Epping. The game was held at CRC Melton in front of a small but enthusiastic supporting group. CRC Melton began the game brilliantly on the back of very good serving and raced to a 17-4 lead early. Unfortunately, our girls stumbled a little and St Monica’s surged back with some fine serving of their own and just won the first set 25-22. Teams who have lost sets after giving up a big lead often struggle to regroup but our girls recovered brilliantly and dominated the second set to win 25-9. This pattern continued in the third set with CRC Melton producing some wonderful saving shots to back up their strong serving, taking the set 25-15. The last set was destined to be shortened as the game needed to be completed by 2.30 under competition rules. We needed a good start but St Monica’s bounced out to a 6-0 lead, but, once again, the strength and character of the CRC Melton girls shone through and when time was called, CRC Melton was leading 18-15. The girls were premiers for 2014, winning 3 sets to 1. This was the first premiership ever won by a Volleyball team from CRC Melton. The game was of a very high standard, both teams serving powerfully and deep to make returning the ball difficult, but CRC Melton probably had just a few more girls who could serve well to spread the load and keep the opposition under pressure. Special thanks to Anton Micallef, our consultant coach, who has dramatically improved the skill level of the girls as well as developing a strong understanding of game play. I also thank the parents who supported the program by allowing their daughters to train after school each Thursday afternoon. You should be very proud of your girls! Finally, congratulations to the team! They have worked extremely hard to improve their game to reach this level. They train hard, look to improve each session, and have discovered the benefits that can be gained from a strong sense of teamwork. Team members: Emily Flack, Natalie Folker, Madison Giese, Anglena Koj, Gisma Lieba, Cheyanne Llanes, Achol Manon, Naideine Suttie, Isobel Turnbull, Rebecca Vernon Michael Hill

In Year 10, 2015, you are required to have a copy of the Religion & Society textbook, A World of Diversity. If you wish to purchase this book 2nd hand, current Year 10s have passed on copies to staff that they are keen to sell for $20 (booklist price new is about $50). The sale will be held in the foyer of the library during lunchtime on Wed 26 & Thu 27 November. Only cash will be accepted on these days. Care Monkey We encourage parents to have details of both parents as emergency contacts in Care Monkey. Canteen News I will start by saying I can’t believe how quick this year has gone and that I am actually talking about things going on in 2015. Good luck to all the students with their exams, hope you all do well. I would like to put a really big thank you out to all of the volunteers that have helped us out in the canteen this year, it is a tremendous help and very much appreciated by myself, Marg and Annette. Next year will see a different process for P & F levies, but we still need volunteers in the canteen. At the beginning of next year I will start asking for volunteers. If any parents wish to volunteer it will be greatly appreciated and also many students enjoy their parents helping out in the canteen. Over the Christmas break I will be thinking of a few different options of how we can thank you for your time, we will let you know early 2015. Mr Sheehan and I have been discussing things such as an Annual Volunteers Dinner Just a quick reminder now and I will keep pushing it next year as well, could everyone endeavor to place a lunch order in the morning, this ensures you get what you want and also stops the disappointment of lining up and missing out. A new menu, not much different in products to this year, but unfortunately price increases will be put on line and available early 2015. The increases are unavoidable. I have done surveys of the school canteens in Melton and we are still comparable to all of them, both primary and secondary. Most increases are due to supplier increases. Have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. Karen Honey Canteen
