21st April, 2015 Reflection Let Christ Be At The Centre Of Our Lives It is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead. (Lk 24:35-48) A Litany Lord Jesus, Son of God, Saviour of the world, Be the centre of all that we are, and the life that we lead. Lord Jesus, light in this dark world, illuminate our hearts and minds. Be the centre of all that we are, and the life that we lead. Lord Jesus, Bread of Life, feed us in those times of emptiness and hunger. Be the centre of all that we are, and the life that we lead. Lord Jesus, Water of Life, flow through our hearts and into our lives, Be the centre of all that we are, and the life that we lead. Lord Jesus, may ours be fruitful lives as branches and shoots of the one True Vine. Be the centre of all that we are, and the life that we lead. Lord Jesus, Servant King, may we understand the true meaning of service. Be the centre of all that we are, and the life that we lead. Lord Jesus, for whom death could claim no victory. May we live in the knowledge and assurance of your Resurrection. Amen. ( Source: Prayer, Liturgy and Worship Resources website <www.faithandworship.com)

Study Skills Coach and Inspirational Speaker, Darren Pereira, will give you practical strategies that will help your child not only survive, but thrive at school. It will help you understand teenage pressures and give you a toolkit of communication skills to build your child’s resilience and create a positive home environment for academic success. The presentation is Tuesday April 28, 7pm in our new Performing Arts Centre. You will find the evening enlightening, inspiring and practical.

His program has been specifically geared for parents with teenagers, therefore applicable to all Year levels and concentrates on how you as a parent can:   

build your child’s self confidence so that they reach their fullest potential motivate your child to achieve both academically & in life communicate effectively so that you can understand your child & develop a close, positive relationship discover & develop your child’s talents toward a meaningful pathway

A similar program was offered last year and the feedback was from those who attended was overwhelming positive. 

“Study techniques – importance of planning, providing the right environment. Success comes from effort.”

“Good simple ideas & importance of basics & structure.”

“To me the most important thing I learnt was to praise effort and not talent. I also learnt that I am doing some of the right things with my children which is encouraging.”

“Using different techniques to change our child’s mindset & give him the confidence to achieve better exam scores, assignments + look forward to a brighter future.”

“It was brilliant in understanding kids thoughts and how to motivate & understand their thoughts.”

“This workshop has opened my eyes to how my children should be planning their study etc. I just thought that it was for the kids not for us to be involved with!”

Year 10 Drama Performance

Senior Alpine Experience

The Year 10 Drama class shall be presenting their Ensemble Performance at 7pm this Friday 24th April, in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC). All parents, family members and friends of the cast are welcome, as are members of the College community. As the students performing will be assessed on this same evening, it is imperative that standard theatre etiquette is observed. In line with this, it would be advisable that babies or small children do not attend. Just a reminder that the performance shall begin promptly at 7pm and no entry will be possible whilst a performance is in progress. Doors shall be opened at the conclusion of each performance.

CRC Melton conducts an annual trip to Mt Buller during the ski season for students to experience snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Snow sports are a fantastic way for students to challenge themselves in some of the most remarkable landscapes in Australia. Snow sports are often the motivating factor for people to travel overseas to locations such as New Zealand, Japan and Canada. Some CRC Melton students have chosen gap years after schooling that incorporates whole seasons at overseas ski resorts.

Ashlee Hughes Year 10 History Students in Year 10 History have just begun a new topic on 'Rights and Freedoms'. As an introductory activity the students re enacted the creating of the 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights'. Students were nominated as countries and debated which rights they thought were imperative for all people. The students were very passionate about this task and are looking forward to the rest of the topic. Ashlee Hughes

As in previous years, the camp will run over the weekend, in this case, the 21st – 23rd of August. Previously the camp has been open to students in Years 11 – 12. However, 2015 will be a transition year. Over the next two years the Alpine Experience will be transitioned to a camp for students in Years 10 – 11. As a result, the 2015 camp will be open to all students in the three senior levels. In order to keep the cost as low as possible, the College will be endeavouring to fill the camp to maximum capacity. Year 10 students are now invited to apply for a placement on the 2015 camp. There are still positions available to older students if they wish to apply. Camp forms will be available from out the front of co-ordinator’s offices. If there are any questions, please email Mr Iannazzo: piannazzo@crcmelton.com.au Year 9 Science Incursion As part of the College’s Year 9 Science GADAL Program, we have organised a Forensic Science incursion titled ‘A Case of Identity’ to be presented by Education Interactive on Wednesday 29th April. This workshop will present a crime scene for students to solve. They will hear the case background and will be able to examine the evidence found at the scene. Students will see the tests that are carried out in the Forensic Laboratories and help to solve the crime just like a real Forensic Scientist. They will learn how Forensic Scientists process crime scenes to find the vital clues they need to assist a Police investigation. A parent letter will be sent home on Wednesday 22nd April with more information regarding this activity. Lauren Spearman Science Coordinator

Social Justice news Soup van visits for senior students Last Friday we had the first group of students out in the city supporting the St. Vincent De Paul soup van. Ms J Clinton and Mr M Donovan attended with 8 students from Years 11 and 12. The soup van provides free meals for the people of Melbourne that are either homeless or struggling financially. The students assist by handing out the food and by providing conversation and friendship to the clients that attend the vans. There will be 4 more visits this year. Any donations of blankets, warm clothing , beanies, scarves or toiletries are most welcome. These get given out on the night and are much sought after. Ms J Clinton, Mr M Donovan, Chloe Vieth, Yasmin Smits, Ryan Minogue, Zac Pendleton, Erin Sutherland and Bayley Henderson Help Needed - Sandwiches for the Western suburbs Tuesday April 28th 3.30 – 4.15. Over the past three years Year 9 students have prepared sandwiches for distribution to people and families in the Western Suburbs that were experiencing hardship. This year we welcome students from all Year levels to help with the sandwich making. Students wishing to help will be required to stay after school until approximately 4.15 and will need to bring donations such as bread, margarine, cheese, ham, lettuce etc. Anything that can be used to make healthy sandwiches will be appreciated. If making donations they can be passed through the office to Margaret Rowe-Watts on the day. Students wishing to help should email mrowe-watts@crcmelton.com.au Helping our friends at Br. Beausang in Kenya Through Sponsorship Last term the Social Justice team ran some competitions to help raise money for the Br. Beausang school in Kenya. Two large lolly jars were awarded to the lucky people who guessed the exact number. We were able to raise approximately $250.00 which will be put toward student sponsorship. We also spent two lunchtimes washing staff cars and hopefully will be able to do this again this term as a fundraiser. The school will be asking families and students to make any contribution they can over the next two weeks. It costs $450.00 to educate one student for a year. We need to raise $1200 as we have three students that we sponsor, Christelle and Patrick, both in Year 11 and Moses in Year 10. Without this sponsorship the students would not be able to attend school and the financial burden on their families would be too great. Unemployment is very high and wages are very low in Nairobi – Kenya so any assistance that can be provided through the sponsorship program is given directly to the school to cover the cost of their education.

Cultural Diversity week – Last term Last term we held some activities over the week to provide students with an opportunity to experience the benefits of different cultures. We prepared and sold Nachos, had some Italian pizzas, took part in some African drumming and watched some very impressive Japanese Karate performed by our very own students and staff.

On behalf of the Social Justice team and the Leadership team at CRC we thank you for your ongoing support provided to the various groups that we lend a hand to. In the words of Jesus “ Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did for me”. Matthew 25:40 Margaret Rowe - Watts Social Justice Coordinator
