6th May, 2014 Reflection Encounters They were disciples. They encountered him on the road. They hungered to spend time with him. They recognised him in his actions. Their hearts burned to know more. They left, told the story and inspired others with their hope. Lord, like your disciples present on the road and at the table we are inspired by your deep love for us. Help us to fearlessly share the good news with all we meet. Thank you for the sharing of story here in our community, where we recognise Jesus in the breaking of bread. Help us to support the Sacramental life we espouse as a Eucharistic community, and strengthen us to be authentic witnesses of life giving presence for all. Amen

College News Although only in the third week of Term 2, CRC Melton staff and students have been engaged in a large number of College activities. Congratulations to our Humanities staff who organised our annual Year 8 Medieval day last Friday. The bad weather held off and students participated in a large number of activities from Music and Dance, Costumes and Lifestyles through to Medieval Warfare. It was heartening to see the enjoyment on the faces of our students.

We also had sport success with our Senior boys and girls winning their Football and Netball games last Thursday. Today we compete in the SACCSS Cross Country Carnival and if the training efforts of our students are rewarded, I am sure they will do the College proud. Thanks to Mr Brown, Mr McCann, Ms Brown and Mr Guthridge for their contributions. During the remainder of this week out Year 7s are particularly busy with the first round of Year 7 Premier League, Year 7 Science ‘Animal Zoo’ visits and Project Rockit presentations. Mark Sheehan Principal Mid Year Exams and Timed Assessment Tasks Once again this year, the College has set out a formal assessment schedule that will operate across Years 7 – 11. These will take place over the dates from June 4 to June 13. In next week’s newsletter Exam Timetables for all year levels will be published. Roadworks Thanks to all families for your patience and understanding with the Roadworks that are taking place outside the College. Whilst we have no control over the scope and timing of the works, we continue to liaise with the contractors to ensure we inform you of any major disruptions. John Christie Deputy Principal - Staff

NAPLAN Testing Years 7 & 9 2014

NAPLAN Testing will operate at the following times:

The 2014 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Years 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 13 May, Wednesday 14 May and Thursday 15 May. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and school leadership which can be used to improve student achievement.

Tuesday, May 13

All Years 7 and 9 students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year. The College’s Learning Support staff will contact the parents of those students who may be eligible for exemption. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted. Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the relevant Year Level Coordinator. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal form. These forms are available at the College. During the test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday, May 16. Parents will receive a personal NAPLAN report later in the year. The report will describe each student’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will also show performance in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia. I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy. For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

These times are stipulated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority to ensure all schools are undertaking tests at common times. Students will need to have a ruler, an eraser and book to read (if they finish early) as well as their books for the remainder of each period class of each session unless told otherwise (as most tests will not take a full 1 period time allotment). Can I particularly stress the need for all students to have their own calculator for the Thursday morning test. Students should also check that fresh batteries have been fitted. A brochure outlining basic information to parents about NAPLAN will be distributed to all Year 7 and Year 9 students this week to take home. If you have any questions, please contact Robyn Sullivan (Director of Learning) or myself at the College. School Photos

Drama

Full school photos are scheduled for 29 May. This year the ordering of photos will be online. Details as to how to order photos will be given to each student in the coming weeks. Arthur Reed Photos will also provide the opportunity for family photos. Students will be required to wear full winter uniform for the photos, if a student has PE or related activity they will need to bring their PE uniform to school and change from their uniform. Further details will be published in coming newsletters.

Recently the Years 10, 11 and 12 Drama students attended the Melbourne Theatre Company’s (MTC) production of Neighbourhood Watch, starring Robyn Nevin. This professional performance provided the stimulus for students to complete school assessed coursework (SAC) within the classroom. The Year 12 Drama students will also be expected to write on this performance in their end of year written exam. All students are to be commended on their excellent behavior during the excursion, as was noted by the Education Officer from the MTC. The same students also had the opportunity to attend Top Class, produced by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority at the Melbourne Recital Centre, on yet another excursion into the city. This excursion provided the opportunity for students to witness some of the top scoring VCE Drama Solo performances from 2013. It is a pleasure taking students from CRC on such excursions, which is only made possible by the support of fellow staff members who give generously of both their time and their bus driving skills; many thanks to Mrs Bloetz, Ms Matthews and Ms Hughes.

Community Road Safety Forum Your son or daughter may have recently received or is about to receive his/her learner’s permit to drive a motor vehicle. Young drivers in their first year of driving are 3 to 4 times more likely to be involved in a road fatality, than other drivers. Lack of road safety is a predominant cause of accidental death to young people, hence it is important to provide information to students and parents well before an eighteen year old gets his/her probationary driver’s licence. The Melton City Council is hosting a community road safety forum on 7 May at the Melton Library. I encourage students, particularly Years 9-12, and parents to attend this very worthwhile and valuable road safety forum. It is intended to influence young drivers and passengers to make better choices when becoming road users. Below is a flyer advertising the venue, date and time of the forum. DCT - State Dance Competition Over the weekend Catholic Regional College Melton’s dance comp troupe, known as DCT, competed against multiple schools in the state dance competition. Both teams, Hip Hop and Theatrical, did an amazing job performing in their respective styles of dance. Unfortunately the Hip Hop team was unable to compete due to the lack of members but they were lucky enough to have the fantastic opportunity to perform. The Theatrical troupe performed with everything they had and they achieved a third place and a trip into the next round of the competition. The day was long, but DCT managed to keep their enthusiasm and positivity throughout and represented CRC proudly. Tempest Ardley

VCE Dance Workshops

Ensemble Performances

On Wednesday 2nd April and Tuesday 28th April the VCE Dance students participated in workshops in Hip Hop and Samba. As part of the curriculum VCE students are to expand their movement styles which will give them a wider understanding of other dance styles, which then can be implemented in their group and solo dances this year. The choreographers, Renee Von Senden and Priscilla Stavrou, are professionals in their field who travel Australia and around the world performing. They were thrilled with the enthusiasm and participation of the students. The students absolutely loved the popping and locking in Hip Hop and getting to shake their hips in Samba. Great work VCE Dance students, keep it up.

The Year 11 and 12 VCE Drama class will be presenting their Ensemble Performances at: 7pm on Thursday 15th May, in the Drama Studio. The Year 10 Drama class will be presenting their Ensemble Performances at : 7pm on Tuesday 20th May, in the Drama Studio.

All parents, family members and friends of the cast are welcome, as are members of the College community. As the students performing will be assessed on this same evening, it is imperative that standard theatre etiquette is observed. In line with this, it would be advisable that babies or small children do not attend. Please phone Samantha Frazzetto in the College office on 9743 6522 to RSVP for the performance itself, prior to the performance evening. Your support for the performing arts is much appreciated. Students are to wear PE uniform and are expected to make their own way to church and are required 15 minutes before Mass begins.

On Saturday 5th of April at The Amphitheatre, along High Street in Melton there was an interactive Music festival called "Beatz on the Streets". This festival included vibrant energy and fun workshops which took place from 1.15pm to 4:45pm. There were also DJ's, dance performances, bands, singers and Youth Services info stalls. On the day CRC presented 4 performances, which were absolutely amazing and really showed off the talent that we have at our school. The first dance performance had a batman vs joker theme which told a story of battle and power through the 2 characters that were displayed. The second dance performance was themed "A Night at the Movies" where dancers dressed up as scary horror movie characters, dancing to songs such as Thriller by Michael Jackson and the last dance performed was a hip hop dance. After all the dances, CRC then finished it all off with two Year 12 students, Stacey Pieper and Halie McLoughlin performing 'Our Song' by Taylor Swift. The day was a great opportunity for students to show off their talent to the wider community.
