Presentation of Corporate Impact Award to Schlumberger: Cathy Campbell, Jean-Franรงois Poupeau and Paul Longsworth
2014 CRDF Global Annual awards gala This year’s theme, “Empowering Innovators,” convened scientists, entrepreneurs, educators, and industry leaders. Through stories from the honorees and CRDF Global grantees and fellows, we learned the true meaning of innovation; it is the force that drives: An Iraqi scientist who left home for the U.S. to study various lab safety measures and animal disease surveillance for the benefit of his home-country. An entrepreneur from Croatia designing health diagnostic capabilities for children through a specially designed teddy bear. An international corporation creating new opportunities for women scientists and developing creative tools to encourage interest in science among kids. A successful entrepreneur that finds that the key to living a life that matters isn’t through money alone, but using money to help others. Innovation involves creating new solutions and strategies that break down barriers preventing people from living healthy, happy lives. Around the world, CRDF Global is creating opportunities for scientists and innovators to make the world a better place. Public-private partnerships are becoming
crucial to advancing science and technology. It’s because of corporations’ increased role that CRDF Global created the Corporate Impact Award—in addition to its award for individuals, the George Brown Award for International Scientific Cooperation. CRDF Global’s Annual Awards Gala not only recognizes influential leaders in innovation and international science collaboration, but also generates support for CRDF Global’s mission and programs. Money raised from the event allows us to develop new programs and initiate international collaborations with countries where others are reluctant to operate. This has led to some of our most impactful programs, including the Virtual Science Library; our initial engagements with Iraq’s science community; and our ongoing work with North Korea. It is a necessary part of the work we do, allowing us to be at the forefront of international science cooperation. You can make a difference! Make your tax-deductible donation today to help us continue making an impact around the world. Or call our development office at 703–600–3453 to speak to Wendy Scott Keeney, our Vice President of Development and Marketing about ways that you can engage with CRDF Global.
“One of the ways in which we’ve managed has been with help from institutions like CRDF Global. Having them helped us get international exposure, both in terms of grants and mentoring.” —Josipa Majic, Co-Founder, Teddy the Guardian, Zagreb, Croatia
“Many years ago, I saw a sign that said you may be successful, but will you matter. It occurred to me that [my] success was the solution to someone else’s problem.” —Jeff Hoffman, 2014 George Brown Award Honoree
“This award really enforces our joint commitment with CRDF Global to maximize technological competency around the world and minimize impact to the environment.” —Mr. Jean-François Poupeau, 2014 Corporate Impact Award Honoree
“Science does not know borders or nationalities. It is for everyone. Diseases also do not know borders. Scientists must work together to identify the risk of diseases and to start eliminating them and decrease their impacts.” —Layth Abdulrasool, Head, Molecular Diagnostic Unit Laboratory of Transboundary Animal Diseases, Central Veterinary Diagnostic and Research Laboratory, Baghdad, Iraq
