COVER STORY
DaviD Byrne: Welcome to our neW chief eDitor Dear All I would like to introduce myself and say a warm hello to all the readers of United British Expats Magazine. I am so excited to be taking over the helm from Paula Rapsiewicz as Chief Editor of this fabulous online publication and would like to congratulate her on a job well done. I’m sure we would all like to wish her every success for the future. Of course it takes more than a visionary like founder Mr Abdelhadi Rhiti and a talented editor to produce such a high-end product. It requires a whole team of talented individuals to achieve a quality publication, and Paula has certainly assembled some of the best in the business. Having been a contributor since its inception I have seen Mr Rhiti’s vision being transformed from a useful information portal for expats into a fully-fledged must-read professional magazine. Although living in London for most of my adult life, I have spent extended periods of time in far off climes such as Chicago, as well as various locations in Asia, so I fully appreciate the importance of staying connected with the homeland.
My background hails from the financial markets, a career which began back in the 1980’s. Coming from a humble, working class family, I worked my way up through the ranks of globally recognised institutions eventually attaining the rank of CEO for several of these. Over the years I have had regular articles published in major tabloids, broadsheets, and financial publications. I have also appeared on numerous television channels giving expert commentary on stocks and currencies. In recent years I have concentrated my efforts towards the literary world having completed three successful published novels with a fourth on its way. I am looking forward to this challenge kindly offered to me by Mr Rhiti, a close friend of some twenty-five years, and intend to carry on Paula’s good work in keeping expats informed, as well as creating some new fascinating, engaging content for your enjoyment. Finally, I would once again like to thank Mr Rhiti, Paula as well as the team, but I offer a special thank you to you, the loyal readers of United British Expats Magazine. somewhere in between you lost sight of you - independent of work and family, who are you? It doesn’t matter how you go to this space, right now a new world is calling you… are you ready for it? Stop doubting yourself. Stop feeling guilty. Stop feeling frustrated. Stop wondering where to start. Now is your time to shine. Now is your time to prepare for your new world. Now is your time to feel fulfilled again. But how? The first step is to get really clear on your strengths. Write a list. Talk to friends, family, ex colleagues and ask them what they see as your strengths. Once you're clear on your strengths, you can identify which ones you want to use in your life. With this clarity, you will also start to build your confidence. Sometimes that feeling manifests in different ways. • You may find you’re a bit snappy with your kids, not unnecessarily, but things you used to ride out are really pressing your buttons. • Or perhaps you find you’re feeling frustrated with your life, and you just ‘ugh’ every time you’re asked to do something. • Perhaps you’re starting to feel some resentment towards your partner - he’s out for work dinners, he’s busy every day with no time to even take your call, he isn’t grateful for all you’re doing around the home and for the family. • Or maybe, while you’re happy for your friend and what she’s sharing, you also feel a little jealous. • Perhaps you’re filling your day with stuff, keeping yourself very busy just so you’re not left alone with your own thoughts. Does any of this feel familiar? Have you had one of those ‘ahhhh’ moments while reading these examples? These are all signs that something is a little ‘off’ in your world. And while you may have become used to these feelings in your life, it may have become your normal, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are loads of reasons why you may have got here. Maybe you decided to be a stay at home mum but now the kids are in full time school, they don’t need you in the same way anymore. So you’re feeling frustrated because you want something more in your life, but you don’t know what that is. Or maybe you gave up your career to follow and support your partner, and now that everything is running smoothly you find yourself wondering ‘what now?’ Or maybe you’ve had a fabulous career and you’re great at juggling the family needs and your professional life, but uBe-6
Next, you want to get really clear on your interests and passions. What can you talk about for hours? What gets you excited about your day? Once you have clarity on these two core pieces, you can start to build your puzzle. Ask yourself how you want to use these strengths and passions? What is important to you? Then set yourself a goal, with actions, how you will do this. If you want support, download my free video training “Become Your Best Self” www.expatparentingabroad.com/best In this free video training you will discover how with clarity you can boost your confidence and be there for yourself and your family, without the guilt. the Delightful overwhelm of a pile of undone tasks As I came back to work after a month off, I noticed myself feeling overwhelmed by the mountain of work in front of me.
the Way that i practice With this is simple
I felt a ton of resistance, and stress about how much work had to be done.
First, I make a list of things I need to do. Possibly a long list. Making a simple list like this can really help get everything out in plain sight and let you know what you’re up against. This is where people often feel overwhelmed, so if you start to get stuck here, just move to the next part.
a perfect practice grounD for me! In this article, I’m going to share how I’ve been practicing with the overwhelm with some delight. There are two practices that have helped me: 1 One breath at a time. 2 Finding delight in the task. Let’s talk about each one.
one Breath at a time When there’s a pile of undone things, it can feel overwhelming — how in the world can we tackle all of that? It can be stressful and shut us down to actually doing the work.
Second, I make a short list of what I want to focus on for today. I can’t do the whole list today, so I chop it down to what I would love to accomplish for today. I try to keep this list short so I don’t get too overwhelmed and it feels doable. If it doesn’t feel doable, make it shorter! Finally, I pick one task and really just focus on that. One small one, something doable that I can use to get some momentum. Then that task become my whole world. It’s the same as meditation — one breath at a time, one task at a time. When my mind starts to go to all the other things on the list … I simply return to that one task and give it my full focus.
uBe-7
FEATURE
Often you might still feel overwhelmed, because you still have a big pile left. The way I think about it is: I have millions of breaths left to take in my life. I can’t take them all at once, nor would I want to! So I take one at a time. One breath at a time — don’t try to take them all at once.
I get fired up about the task — if I’m successful at this, or if I remember (hint: I don’t always!).
finD Delight in the task
Then I take it on like a man in love with life.
OK, so we do one at a time … the challenge is that it can still often feel like we’re just trying to get through the list, cranking through tasks, not really loving what we’re doing.
I find the joy, the dance, the music, the adventure in the task.
What if you could find delight in the tasks? What if it could be an adventure, or a way of expressing your love for others? As I take each task off the pile and give it my full focus … I try to find a reason why I care about this. A reason to be lit up uBe-8
by it. A reason to love what I’m doing, and put my full self into it.
Every task has this possibility in it. We just need to find it. What might light you up about your next task today? Written by Leo Babuta

cBD: the Benefits Over the recent years cannabidiol, or CBD, has finally been recognised for its magnificent healing and medicinal properties. The CBD industry is growing rapidly, and predicted to contribute a whooping $16 billion to the US economy by 2025. uBe-16
CBD is the oil extracted from the cannabis sativa plant, and does not contain the psychoactive THC ingredient, which is used to get a high; it is purely a plant based oil which can be used for multiple health complications, and pain relief. Many companies have taken advantage of this growing trend, and incorporated the CBD ingredient into food, beauty and hygiene products, as well as supplements. CBD is said to improve symptoms of anxiety, depression and PTSD, as well as helping with muscle and back pains, and promoting better sleep. Many studies have been done on the effects
of CBD in relation to rare seizures, and evidence confirms that seizures can be reduced with consistent use of pure cannabidiol. Scientists are still discovering the benefits of CBD, and testing its effects on various cases, even suggesting it has properties which help protect the body from creating cancerous cells, therefore reducing the chances of cancer. Pure CBD is very safe according to experts, and the worst side effects you can encounter include an upset stomach, sleepiness, drowsiness, decreased appetite or a mild rash. finD freeDom in One of our deepest desires is for freedom: to be free of stress, anxiety, a frustrating person, a difficult situation, financial struggles, health problems, the daily grind, distractions, feeling inadequate.

n any moment
uBe-19
So many books, products and other paid solutions offer a version of this freedom. Escape. Peace. Mindfulness. Simplicity. Self esteem. A better relationship. Health and fitness. Freedom, for a price. One of the great discoveries of my life is that this freedom is always available to us. In any moment. That might sound obvious to some of you, but you’d be surprised at how often we forget this, even after we discover it. It’s a practice of a lifetime. Let’s explore it a bit.
the oBstacle to our freeDom If freedom is always available to us, why is it so difficult to find? It’s important to bring awareness to the obstacle before we look at solutions. Let’s imagine you’re in a situation with someone who is absolutely frustrating you … you just want to get away from uBe-20
them, to a place with peace and quiet, to freedom from this frustrating person. What in this moment is preventing you from feeling freedom? It might seem like it’s the other person … but it’s never really something external. They might be the trigger for how you feel, but in reality we are the ones who create the feeling of frustration, through how we’re viewing the situation or other person. Let me emphasize that: how we view the other person, or the situation, creates our feeling of stress, frustration, anger, disappointment. It doesn’t really matter what the external situation is: some frustrating person, politics, a sporting event, our own behavior. If a feeling of lack of freedom gets created, it’s because of our view. This isn’t to blame ourselves — we’re not doing anything wrong. It’s simply to bring awareness to the cause of this obstacle. The liberating thing is that if our views are responsible for this difficulty … we have the power to change the situation! Always.
FEATURE creating freeDom in any moment So let’s go back to that moment when someone is acting in a frustrating way, and we just want to get away from them, to peace and freedom … In this situation, we can absolutely create freedom for ourselves by getting out of the situation, going for a walk, and finding the freedom of nature. And in fact, I highly recommend it in most cases. But I want to use this scenario to show that freedom can be had even without walking away. Simply an illustration of the principle, not a recommendation to stay in a frustrating situation. So how can we find freedom? Here’s a simple method that can be practiced:
1 Recognize that you’re frustrated (or stressed, disappointed, lonely, etc). Let yourself feel the feelings, as sensations in your body. There’s nothing wrong with how you’re feeling.
2 Then bring awareness to your view. The view that is causing the frustration: “They shouldn’t act this way” or “They always criticize me, I don’t know why they have to be so critical” or “I shouldn’t be such a procrastinator, I suck!” We’re not criticizing the view, not even saying it’s wrong … we’re just bringing awareness to the view that’s causing the lack of freedom.
3 Ask if the view is helping you or serving you. If you’re feeling frustration or hurt, it’s probably not. Ask whether you’re committed to staying this way, or if you’d like to change. If you’d like to change, move on to the next step.
4 Loosen your grip on the view. For example: Do you really know someone shouldn’t act the way they should? Have you walked in their shoes? Do you know how everyone should act? I personally don’t even know how I should act, let alone how others should act. This kind of inquiry is not to tell ourselves that our view is wrong — it’s simply to loosen our attachment to the view, to show that there might be other possibilities. Is it possible there are other perspectives? Other things you don’t know?
5 Experience the world free of views. At any moment, we can simply let go of our views and see the world just as it is. See the objects, the light, the colors and textures, the space of the world around us. See the other person simply as a collection of matter and energy. Just experience the moment as direct experience, not as part of a narrative that we have in our heads. This is true freedom, and it’s simply being in the
moment free of views, just experiencing. It’s like when you’ve been out in nature, fully immersed in the experience without really thinking anything, lazily lying in the grass staring up at the trees and sky, floating in the ocean feeling one with the water, on vacation in a hammock fully relaxed and without any worries. This is the freedom available to us at any moment.
6 Bonus: Bring in a new, helpful perspective. First of all, you don’t need a new perspective — the freedom is experiencing the moment without views. That said, sometimes it can be helpful to try out new perspectives! For example … Can we find gratitude for this person, or for ourselves? Can we see the gift that they are, or that we are? Can we feel a connection to them, or find compassion for the fear and pain they’re feeling? Could we bring curiosity or a sense of exploration to the situation? This kind of thing isn’t always helpful (for example, if you’re in danger or in an abusive situation, get away!), but can very often be worth trying out. This all takes practice, obviously. You can’t do the last few steps until you start practicing the first few steps. The last few steps can be a struggle when we’re really strongly holding our views. Don’t worry too much about that, just keep practicing!
the poWer of finDing this freeDom If we learn to practice this kind of freedom at any moment, we start to have much more choice. For example: If we were thinking about breaking up with someone because we’re tired of being in frustrating conflicts with them, we might be able to let go of the frustration and find peace, even when they’re upset. This might allow us to be more compassionate with them, and could shift the entire relationship. Not necessarily, but there is a possibility here. If we’re frustrated with ourselves, it can be the start of a kinder relationship to ourselves. If we’re avoiding something, like doing our taxes or budget, instead of avoiding it to be free of the stress … we could actually find freedom doing the task. This allows us to find freedom in any activity: exercise, cleaning, decluttering, writing, being in a meeting. We can eventually be free to do anything: launch a business, write and publish a book, put our creations on social media, connect with people online, be on a stage, create a movement. Because the things that were limiting us before are no longer limitations — we can be free doing all of these things. What would that be like? Written by Leo Babauta uBe-21

two-time ‘copa del rey’ winner hydra is sponsoreD By immucura meD for 2021
Hydra, designed by Mark Mills and owned by Oscar Chaves, was the winning boat in the famous 'Copa del Rey' regatta in 2018 and 2019 in Mallorca. Last year the event was cancelled due to the pandemic, but this year the Copa del Rey is back. Hydra sponsored by Maserati and Estrella Damm in previous years, will span the sails under the name Immucura Med. The medical service provider company based in Marbella is looking forward to the event. Hydra, will launch on August 2nd at 1pm and navigate into the deep blue Mediterranean. Immucura Med’s CEO Johannes Schumacher is a passionate sailor himself and will of course be on site in Palma de Mallorca as well as on the most important day of the regatta, August 7th, when he will be part of the crew to cross the finish line. “We won’t accept anything less than a podium,” says Schumacher with a smile.
When asked why Immucura Med decided to co-sponsor this year, he replied: “For a long time, seafaring and especially sailing boats were considered the only means of transport to venture into unknown worlds, to discover new things and to give people new experiences, while being in harmony with nature. The same principles apply to Immucura Med. Our vision is to provide cancer patients with the best dendritic cell immunotherapy; a Nobel prize awarded treatment that is still quite unknown until now. Immucura Med has made it its vision to bring this to as many people as possible and to help them.” The ‘Copa del Rey’ will take place in Palma de Mallorca from July 31 to August 7, 2021, updates will be available daily on our dedicated website https://www.immucuramed.org/. uBe-25

a hair rescue We love a little dip in the pool during the summer season, but our wonderful locks may disagree! Humidity and heat often disagrees with many hair types, and the chlorine definitely doesn't compliment my bleach-blonde strands. Whatever type of hair you have, the sun and sea can really cause havoc in your daily styling routine; whether you experience colour fades and going green (blonde-problems!), loss of curl, moisture and shine, split ends or constant frizziness, we are here to help! Since living in sunny Spain, I’ve experienced green tinges, straw-like hair and total lack of structure. UVB rays are just as harmful to our hair, as they are to our skin; and with the addition of chlorine and sea water, your hair can struggle to stay healthy and nourished. Of course, wearing a hat, scarf or a swimming cap is one of the options, but uBe-26
there are also multiple products on the market which can help prevent sun damage, or revive your hair when necessary. After trying numerous products and remedies, I’ve put together a list of products which have done miracles to return my hair to a healthy and manageable state, and I hope they do the same for you!
garnier ultimate BlenDs hair fooD I was recently out food shopping, when I came across this colourful, vibrant range, which immediately captured my attention. Not only did the packaging look great, I also noticed that these products are made
using 98% natural origin ingredients! The range includes shampoo, conditioner and a leave-in mask, which promises healthier, stronger and more nourished hair. With the addition of super fruits, and free of silicone, parabens and colourants, this range seems like the ideal holiday companion. Also, they smell great, and come in various intriguing scents such as banana, goji, macadamia and papaya.
l’oreal paris elvive extraorDinary oil
This is my all-time, must-have, at all times! Honestly, since purchasing this oil, I cannot live without. As mentioned earlier, bleach and sun is a deadly combination, often leaving my hair feeling straw-like and drained of any shine. I’ve tried numerous oils, and I found that many of them leave my hair looking greasy, rather than shiny and healthy; however, L’Oreal’s Extraordinary Oil, really is extraordinary! You only need one pump for medium-length hair, and can be used on wet or dry hair. It will leave your hair feeling soft, shiny, and make it a lot more manageable when styling.
pro:voke touch of silver colour care
This one is for all of my bleached beauties! PRO:VOKE is my absolute essential on holiday; it’s one of those products that I always have in my bathroom, and always helps to tone out any green patches in my hair. The silver shampoo, conditioner and leave-in toner come in a deep shade of purple which helps to tone out any imperfections in blonde hair. I’ve used this brand for years, and I highly recommend it.
castor oil
Last, but not least - the old good castor oil! Castor oil has been used for centuries, and is known to benefit our hair in so many ways; it helps it grow faster, stronger, and most importantly - it’s totally natural. Expensive products have taken over some of the most effective natural remedies, but castor oil is still widely used today. It’s high in vitamin E, proteins, minerals and omega-6 and good fatty acids. It also contains very high levels of ricinoleic acid, which are all extremely beneficial for our hair. Before you go to sleep, wet your hair slightly and cover with castor oil; wrap your hair in a scarf or wear a shower cap overnight, and wash out in the morning for maximum effect.
