WELCOME MESSAGE Canberra is a remarkable city, dynamic and abundant with innovative thinkers. This is an exciting time for Canberra as it continues to forge its reputation as Australia’s powerhouse of information and influence, and earn its title as the ‘Knowledge Capital’. The city continues to punch above its weight in the world of research. Canberra is home to four of Australia’s top ranking universities and a range of research centres. Australia’s highest ranking university, the Australian National University, recently entered rankings for the top twenty universities in the world. As the Nation’s Capital, Canberra is the proud home of many of our most prominent establishments and national treasures such as Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, and the National Gallery of Australia. Our national story is held within their walls, making them ideal places to host conferences and memorable events.

And then there’s the people. THINK Canberra and the Research and Learning Institutes Group (RALIG) were established by Canberra Convention Bureau to connect businesses with Canberra’s many interesting and influential people. World experts, famous artists, leading researchers including Nobel Prize winners, senior executives, federal politicians, media figures and business leaders live and work in Canberra. Canberra Convention Bureau can connect you with these inspiring individuals and their organisations. But Canberra’s lifestyle isn’t just about business. Its reputation as a desirable place to live is evident in popular precincts such as NewActon, Braddon, Manuka and Kingston which are hives of activity. There are countless delights to explore in Canberra’s urban hot spots, with pop-up stores in Braddon, dining amongst award-winning architecture in NewActon, and ambient bars on the Kingston Foreshore. These buzzing hubs mean there is always something to do at the end of the day. One of the best parts of having so many remarkable people and places in a small city is that collaboration is easy. In fact, the city takes a destination-first approach in welcoming meeting planners and bringing new events to the city. With the help of the Bureau, you can access all of Canberra’s extraordinary venues and everything you need from the one place. We look forward to your event coming to Canberra to share in the benefits of the Knowledge Capital.

Michael Matthews Chief Executive Officer Canberra Convention Bureau

THE POWER OF 1 – DOES YOUR VOICE COUNT?

DATA61: DIGITAL INNOVATION AS NICTA AND CSIRO JOIN FORCES

“The Power of 1 Voice” is a research project about public awareness, engagement, and feelings towards Australia’s democracy.

Data61 is the new digital research powerhouse created by the merger between NICTA (National ICT Australia) and CSIRO Digital Productivity.

The collaboration between the University of Canberra’s Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis (IGPA) and the Museum of Australian Democracy (MOAD) at Old Parliament House began as a survey tool in the museum’s The Power of 1: Does your voice count exhibition, before developing into its own project.

NICTA was established to link university research with industry and government challenges to create innovative solutions. Collaborative projects in Canberra include smart transport, energy and renewables, the digital transformation of government, prosthetic vision aids and the recently launched National Map which provides open access to government spatial data.

Through the survey, Australians were asked serious questions about their engagement with the democratic process, seeking to identify emerging patterns of engagement in the digital age. The partnership also produced an engaging exhibition at MOAD, which was seen by more than 80,000 visitors. The exhibition allowed MOAD to ask the visitors to provide feedback into the research, presenting their feelings, views and reflections on Australian democracy. The engagement with the exhibition also demonstrated the nature of issues which the general public feel strongly about and the speed with which such issues rise and fall in the public mindset. The survey’s findings are available online. Work is now underway for new research, coupled with the data gathered through the exhibition, to create a second instalment called The Power of Us.

NICTA has also engaged with the broader dialogue on technology and its impact on society, with the recent launch of the ACOLA (Australia Council of Learned Academies) sponsored report on ‘Technology and Australia’s future’ at the Academy of Sciences. The cohort of ANU PhD students at NICTA, many of whom are attracted from other countries, continues to grow as these students make their own impact on Australia and the world. NICTA is now merging with CSIRO Digital Productivity to form a new CSIRO entity called Data61, reflecting the critical role that data plays in modern economies. This combined innovation capability, and connections to Australia’s leading universities, research capabilities in CSIRO and industry sectors, is creating new opportunities for attracting global investment and links to Australian Research and Development.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Nobel Prize winning astrophysicist Professor Brian Schmidt AC, took up the leadership of The Australian National University (ANU) on 1 January 2016. He is recognised as a world leader for his research on exploding stars and, prior to his appointment as Vice‑Chancellor, he was an astrophysicist at the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Professor Schmidt has a clear vision for the University’s place in Canberra, Australia and the world, and is enthusiastic about building a positive future through the sharing of knowledge. “We’re located in Canberra, the national capital of Australia, because we have an important role to play in helping the government of Australia make the right decisions about our nation’s future – to help improve the lives of every Australian. “ANU is home to some of the finest minds in the world and we work closely with policy makers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs and businesses to make sure the government has the best possible advice and that our research helps to build a better Australia.”

expert historians and researchers who are highly regarded in their fields. Conferences and events can be greatly enriched by engaging our resources, having our historians speak at or consult on the event, or arranging technical tours. 2015 FIAF CONGRESS PRESERVING HISTORY IN MOTION

Dr Mathew Trinca is the Director of the National Museum of Australia (NMA), and the Secretary of the Museum’s Australia National Council Executive. Dr Trinca is highly regarded in his field, contributing to museums and public history projects including conservation plans, exhibition developments and documentary films. He is published on several history topics and has co-edited two books. He is also a contributor to, and debater of, museological theory and practice. How does NMA add to Australia’s cultural landscape? I can’t think of a more important time in our history when promoting access to and knowledge of our culture and collective meaning was as critical as it is today – an age in which we see the clear impact of ideas and influences that are easily accessible using digital communication technologies. The Museum is a place that can foster our national self-understanding and collective interest, through articulating aspects of our experience and what it means to be Australian. How can the NMA benefit events held in Canberra? Canberra is a sophisticated city with cultural assets that are without peer across the land. The National Museum has a remarkable site, on a peninsula of land thrust into Lake Burley Griffin, and a building that astonishes and delights visitors. The Museum offers an unparalleled understanding of the history of the First Australians, history since settlement and contemporary Australian culture. It is home to

In 2015, the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) congress was hosted in Sydney and Canberra with more than 120 high-ranking film archive specialists and managers congregating from across the world. FIAF is a collaborative association of the world’s leading film archives which are dedicated to rescuing, preserving and showing films for cultural and historical heritage. The organisation has archives in 77 countries. Co-hosted by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), the FIAF 2015 congress provided delegates with a unique opportunity to interact with staff and collections at the NFSA, and exchange ideas with various national collection institution peers and the diplomatic community. The Canberra setting allowed delegates to engage in an assortment of activities such as experiencing film in the NFSA’s beautiful art deco Arc Cinema, and viewing the night sky from Mount Stromlo Observatory. Delegates were high in their praise about Canberra as a cultural site and location for the FIAF congress. National Museum of Australia

Michael Loebenstein is CEO of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) and is serving his second term as Secretary General of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF). Prior to NFSA, Michael worked in Vienna as Curator for Special Programmes at the Austrian Film Museum, and Project Manager and Researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Society’s historical research cluster. He has been an advisor to the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture, and a freelance film and exhibition curator and journalist. Michael has published papers on several prominent documentary filmmakers. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Media History at Macquarie University (Sydney) and the Wantok Music Foundation (Melbourne). THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF AUSTRALIA The National Archives of Australia is often described as the memory of our nation. It collects, preserves and encourages access to a collection of 40 million Australian documents, photographs and objects. In the heritage building, ever-changing exhibitions provide a fascinating glimpse into Australia’s social and political past. Visitors can explore the collections in person or online. The National Archives play a key role in helping ensure the Australian Government and its agencies are effective and accountable – especially in the digital age. It ensures Australians have access to a national archival collection as a means to better understand their culture, heritage and democracy.

PARLIAMENT HOUSE AND THE CANBERRA PRESS GALLERY

Parliament House is an architecturally spectacular building and the engine room of Australia’s democracy. Public areas of Parliament House are open all year round where visitors can view the impressive art collection, explore the well-kept gardens and take in the energetic debate of question time. The Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery –affectionately known as the ‘eyes and ears of the nation’ – is located in Parliament House. Important announcements and press conferences of the Federal Parliament are shared with the media through the Press Gallery. There are over 250 accredited media in the Press Gallery, consisting of journalists, camera operators, editors, photographers, technicians and support staff. They have a wide reach across Australia’s and the world’s most prominent media outlets. The Press Gallery provides national and international coverage for important announcements and information concerning Australia. Many events and conferences held in Canberra access the influence of the Press Gallery to make announcements and broadcast their news.

THE PARLIAMENTARY TRIANGLE

The Parliamentary Triangle is home to Australia’s federal departments and organisations at the heart of Australia’s democracy. A visit to Canberra provides unique access to a network of influential people. In Canberra, department heads, Federal Ministers and experts in every field work together on a macro and micro level to govern the country and implement new ideas. These interesting and influential people are passionate about sharing knowledge and engaging with others in their field. The city’s 18 federal departments service a range of profiles such as Agriculture and Water, Industry, Innovation and Science, Health, and Infrastructure and Regional Development. Many of Canberra’s departments are supported by smaller institutions and organisations which provide data and specialised research to their field. Engaging the right speakers or patron for your conference or event could prove invaluable for conference delegates. Not only would incorporating people of influence be engaging and informative, but it could provide an opportunity to meet some of Australia’s big decision makers.

THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT

Many of Australia’s greatest champions have trained and honed their skills at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). Renowned for producing elite athletes through cutting-edge performance training, innovative skills and world‑class facilities, the AIS is one of Australia’s greatest sporting assets. The AIS is also home to the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) which conducts medical and scientific research in the fields of Sports Science and Sports Medicine. ASC has produced a large body of research in a range of disciplines including biomechanics, physiotherapy and psychology. The AIS fosters a culture of education and innovation and attracts experts with a diverse array of skills. This not only benefits the sporting community by enhancing athletic performance but also provides knowledge and insight into injuries, recovery and health which can benefit the wider community. The AIS has excellent conferences facilities to host your event amongst world-class sport and training facilities.

Canberra was designed as Australia’s meeting place, and it’s only in the capital that you’ll find access to so many of the nation’s people of influence in the one place.

PARLIAMENTARY SITTING DATES 2016

WELCOME TO COUNTRY

Including welcome and acknowledgement protocols in your event recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and custodians of the land. It promotes awareness of the past and ongoing connection to place for Indigenous Australians.

16

A MEETING PLACE

WELCOME TO COUNTRY

Indigenous people have been living in this region for at least 20,000 years. Traditionally the abundance of food in certain seasons led to large gatherings where different people groups came together from distant places. ‘Canberra’ in the Ngunnawal language means ‘meeting place’.

A Welcome to Country is a ceremony performed by an Indigenous custodian or elder from the region to welcome visitors to their traditional land. As there are many Indigenous cultures, each with their own customs, the ceremony can take many forms. Some include singing, dancing, smoke ceremonies, or a speech in traditional language or English.

As people from different groups travelled into the territory, they offered gifts as a symbol of respect and acknowledgement of the territory and people they were visiting. In return, they were invited to stay and leave their footprint on the country of Ngunnawal.

To discuss arranging a Welcome to Country for your event, please contact Canberra Convention Bureau for assistance. If you cannot arrange for a Ngunnawal Elder to attend your event, or if your event is considered too small to warrant a formal Welcome to Country, you may choose to make an Acknowledgment of Country instead.

PLANNING YOUR EVENT ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF COUNTRY An Acknowledgement of Country is a way of showing awareness of and respect for the traditional Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander owners of the land on which a meeting or event is being held, and recognises the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their Country. An Acknowledgment of Country can be formal or informal. At a meeting, speech or formal occasion, the speaker can begin their proceedings by offering an Acknowledgement of Country. Unlike a Welcome to Country, it can be performed by a non-Indigenous person. There are no set protocols or wording for an Acknowledgement of Country, though the statement often takes the following form:

‘I would like to acknowledge that this meeting is being held on the traditional lands of the Ngunnawal people, and pay my respect to Elders both past and present.’ Or ‘I am honoured to be on the ancestral lands of the Ngunnawal people. I acknowledge the First Australians as the traditional custodians of this continent, whose cultures are among the oldest living cultures in human history. I pay respect to the Elders of the community and extend my recognition to their descendants who are present.’ Information provided from the Reconciliation Australia fact sheet ‘Welcome to and Acknowledgement of Country’ for more information go to http://www.det. wa.edu.au/aboriginaleducation/detcms/portal/

An invitation from the Ngunnawal people On behalf of the Ngunnawal people I would like to invite your organisation’s conference to meet on this sacred land and I wish your time here to be a peaceful exchange of ideas that is both productive and fulfilling.

Mrs Agnes Shea OAM Ngunnawal Elder

Home to Parliament House and Old Parliament House – now the Museum of Australian Democracy – you’ll find many of the gems of Australia’s national collection located in the ‘Triangle’ which is framed by Kings and Commonwealth Avenue Bridges, and is near the south side of Lake Burley Griffin.

Between the green open spaces and government buildings are some truly impressive ‘nationals’ – the National Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, National Library of Australia, National Archives of Australia as well as Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre. Across the lake are the National Capital Exhibition, the picturesque Commonwealth Park and the historic Blundell’s Cottage.

The Triangle is easily explored on foot. See the outdoor sculptures, hire a Segway to zip around the lake or join locals doing the ‘bridge to bridge’ loop – either walking, jogging or cycling.

A SPORTING CITY

A SPORTING CITY

It is hardly surprising that Canberra is home to so many sporting events. It is, after all the capital of a sport loving nation.

32

With the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) located here, many of Australia’s greatest champions train within the city every day. It is common to pass teams of athletes jogging or cycling by the road. The AIS cultivates our future athletes and provides Australia’s sporting industry with research and technology across all sporting disciplines.

With such an active involvement in the sporting world, Canberra has developed a sporting culture and is fortunate to host more than their fair share of national and international events. This year the city will be proud to host the 2016 Hockey Masters World Cup and its biggest cricket season yet with three international games and the PM’s XI at the heritage-listed field at Manuka Oval.

EXPLORE CANBERRA Local football teams, the Canberra Raiders and ACT Brumbies always bring an air of excitement and vibrancy to the city, and regular AFL games draw sell‑out crowds. The city also boasts world class mountain trail facilities at Stromlo Forest Park, which attracts a number of high‑profile international mountain bike tournaments.

Hosting big games in a small city has advantages. Canberra’s stadiums provide a great perspective and a friendly atmosphere, and the logistics are manageable making for a stress-free, enjoyable outing. Visitors to Canberra can take part in the city’s active lifestyle. Bicycle hire is easy, fun and accessible for visitors. Excellent cycling paths curve through the city past the picturesque lake, serene bushland and urban neighbourhoods.

Many visitors also enjoy a chance to see a different angle of Australia’s Capital – from the water. Rowing, canoeing, sailing or paddle-boating on Lake Burley Griffin are popular pastimes. Conference delegates watching an international sporting event from the stands or donning the Lycra themselves may be just the thing to make your conference memorable.

FACILITIES

ROYAL THEATRE The Royal Theatre is the perfect venue for conferencing and entertainment. EXHIBITION HALL The Exhibition Hall is a spacious and versatile setting for large scale exhibitions, gala dinners, cocktail parties, award ceremonies and is the most adaptable space for special events in Canberra. The 2000m2 Exhibition Hall can hold up to 120 exhibitor booths and has a ceiling height of 9m with a vehicle access height of 3.9m. Full length windows overlooking Glebe Park provide an abundance of natural light. GALLERY ROOMS The Gallery Rooms present the ideal space for intimate gala dinners and events.
