spinweekend.com.au SPIN Canberra’s Weekends on Wheels is a Centenary of Canberra project, proudly supported by the ACT Government and Presenting Partner NRMA Motoring & Services.

foreword I’m delighted to welcome you to SPIN: Canberra’s Weekends on Wheels, a celebration of wheels and everything that spins in the national capital. SPIN is a major event of the year-long celebrations for the Centenary of Canberra. For those of you visiting our city to join in the SPIN celebrations, Canberrans have a great love of wheels and all things that spin. Each year, the Canberra calendar has a myriad of events demonstrating this – from Summernats to mountain biking championships, and much more. These events are always popular and continue to draw large crowds to the capital each year. In Canberra’s centenary year, it is wonderful that we are able to celebrate with an event like SPIN. Over four big weekends, right across the city, there will be something for everyone. There will be vintage cars, concerts, caravans, spin bowling, steam trains, motorbike riding, skateboarding, mountain biking, rollerblading, solar and electric vehicles, spinning potters, wheelchairs, frisbees, car fashion, yarn-spinning, and even some political spin. We hope that SPIN will be a special celebration for everyone to enjoy. There is a wide variety of workshops, come-and-try events and expert demonstrations at event hubs all around Canberra. The success of the centenary program is based on active community engagement. There have been a number of local community groups working hard in preparation for SPIN, and I thank them all for their involvement. The ACT Government is proud to be supporting this very special Centenary of Canberra celebration and we encourage locals and visitors to get involved and enjoy SPIN. Katy Gallagher MLA Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory

Introduction SPIN: Canberra’s Weekends on Wheels is a celebration of Canberra’s love of all things that spin; from wheeled things like cars, bicycles, skateboards and other vehicles, through sports like wheelchair basketball, ultimate Frisbee, BMX and discus, to other pleasures in life such as roller derby, caravans, potters’ wheels, spinning wheels, DJs spinning tracks, spin bowling, and that speciality of the national capital – political spin. Wheels are often at the heart of our passions. From the earliest pusher to a fascination with the supermarket trolley, our first bike or wheelie suitcase, we harbour genuine affection for these mostly utilitarian aids to life. These four packed weekends in October promise fun aplenty for anyone who has always loved their wheels, as I have, and just can’t wait to get out there and enjoy them. “Spring has sprung, the birds are riz, I wonder where my helmet is?” Canberra holds the national record for the percentage of people, per capita, who ride to work; but it is also now the acknowledged mountain-bike capital of Australia. In addition to the range of

competitive events which Canberra anticipates in spring, SPIN brings special events for the first time, such as the Nike X SBA Australian Pro/Am Invitational Championships, the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships, National Trust Centenary of Canberra Rally and a huge weekend of wheels and creativity from 18 – 20 October. Hub Capital also happens on this huge SPIN weekend. It’s a communitydriven experience of spinning leisure and pleasure pursuits. Get out and see the way Canberrans pursue their passion for wheels. There’ll be a wide variety of participatory workshops, come-and-try events, and expert demonstrations at event hubs all around Canberra. It’s a chance to pick up on the fun that’s generated by the community for the community. SPIN encourages us all to step outdoors, to revel in our passion for wheels and to have fun. The Centenary of Canberra has so far been about many things – centenarians and youngsters, designers and builders, scientists and sportspersons, noble speeches and stimulating arts. This time it’s another chance to show the national capital’s capacity for joy. On yer bike Canberra! Robyn Archer AO Creative Director, Centenary of Canberra

Friday 18 to Sunday 20 October

fri 18 – Sun 20 MUSEUM OF THE LONG WEEKEND Museum of the Long Weekend is a celebration of the national capital through the lens of recreation, holidays and relaxation. It is a living and travelling museum of leisure culture, exhibited in and around vintage caravans and presented by their owners in collaboration with artists. The Museum will be comprised of around 40 vintage caravans that will travel in convoy to Canberra from all over Australia. Three separate main convoys will set off from various extremities of the continent and journey towards the national capital, collecting other vans, people, stories and memories along the way. One convoy begins at Roebourne, in the Pilbara, and travels via Perth, Ceduna, Adelaide and Millicent. Another begins in Cairns and goes via Rockhampton, Noosa, Brisbane, Byron Bay and Taree. The third convoy sets out from south of Hobart, arriving via Devonport, Melbourne, Castlemaine and Griffith. The caravans will pass through many more towns and centres along the way, with most of the ‘Long Weekenders’ gathering in Cowra before travelling in one big convoy to set up camp on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

At Grevillea Park looking over the East Basin of the lake, the caravans will draw up in circles around campfires, in the relaxed ritual of community and family gatherings enjoyed by road-tripping Australians, especially in the 100 years since Canberra was established. Fifteen of the vans will be curated with artist installations exploring stories and memories, connections and ephemera. Sound/performance artists explore solitude and containment in Kyneton, a party artist/ writer delves into stories of a caravan that has hosted at least four honeymoons, students from Wynyard High School in north west Tasmania are restoring an old Sunliner to become an olfactory museum, and others will host performance, animation and visual arts responding to the life of the van and its owners’ experiences. Many of the other beautifully restored vans will be open to the public, as owners welcome guests to strike up a conversation, have a cup of tea, scones, a beer maybe, and a chat about holidays past. The site and its caravans will have special opening hours each day of the weekend. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the public are also welcome to come down to the site, pull up a banana lounge and enjoy the holiday

atmosphere. From 6:30pm, there’ll be a ‘round the campfire’ event hosted by Lex Marinos, with story-telling, a song or two, variety performance, camping tucker, karaoke and film screenings. The beauty of this Museum is that, just like a Long Weekend, nothing much happens and yet it’s all going on. Produced by Big hART Inc, Creative Director: Scott Rankin, Creative Curators: Beth Sometimes, Lex Marinos and Anne Grigg, Production: Mel Robertson, Jody Haines, Chris Symonds, Nick Higgins. friday 18 the canberra pursuit Picture the darkened spaces of a 1940s aircraft hangar, with an audience assembled around a specially marked out cycle track. Around them are speeding bicycles with pedal powered sounds — everything from mechanical whirring violins, to beating drums at impossibly fast tempos, bellow-powered organ pipes, tuned car horns, DIY electronic instruments, a colourful selection of bells and buzzers, chain driven DJ turntables, and the proverbial kitchen sink! Sometimes there is just one acoustic sound accompanied by the discreet lights of the bicycle. Sometimes there is a whole orchestra of bicycle live sounds, digitally manipulated in quadraphonic surround sound, complete with video and light show. Interactive sensors on the bikes and track determine other sonic and visceral aspects of the spectacle.

8

The Canberra Pursuit is a community-based grass roots project of around 80 specially hacked bicycles in a choreographed spectacle of sound, speed and light, based on pedal power and lasting one uninterrupted hour from 7:30–8:30pm. All the bikes and most of the materials used in The Canberra Pursuit are recycled. This is an ecologically sound community event, made with organisations committed

to the renewable energy of bicycles. These include LEAD, an agency enabling people with disabilities to live the life they choose, the Recyclery, a partnership between LEAD, ANU Green and the Canberra Environment and Sustainability Resource Centre dedicated to recycling and reusing bicycles, the Melba Copland Chopper program and Rat Patrol Oz. Creator, composer Jon Rose, is the recipient of the 2012 Don Banks Award which recognises sustained contributions to Australian musical life. Jon is one of the most inventive composers in the country and, often working in community, he stretches notions of what music is and how it can be made. This is a day of performances, installations and artworks that are car themed or created from cars, where the stories of Canberra will be viewed from behind the wheels of our favourite vehicles and you can smell the seat leather of our tyreturning history. Programmed by Donna Jackson of Hubcap Productions it’s an event for petrol heads, dance enthusiasts, those who like to kick tyres, those who like to change them and those who like a bit of fun and culture in their weekend. For the families, from 12–5pm, the TAMS depot at 255 Canberra Avenue turns into the showroom for SPIN Saturday, and comes alive with a day of wheel-inspired family fun, an afternoon of art, culture and CARS as only Canberra can do. Each decade of Canberra will be reflected in an automotive dance-odyssey called The Wheel History of Canberra. Riffing off a car per decade, dance groups, including Swing Cats, Legs and Kokoloco, reveal and celebrate important icons and events in our history. Vintage cars from around Australia will be on display courtesy of the ‘National Trust Centenary of Canberra Rally’, with cars travelling from Jervis Bay to Canberra.

A video installation ‘Windscreen’ will get under the bonnet of Canberra’s car culture, revealing nine Canberrans who love their cars like a member of the family. Vintage Action bus ‘Matilda’ is turned into a boutique cinema for the day, where you can watch short films including a music video in which cars race from the mountains and the coast to get to Canberra and an homage to Canberrans devoted to buses. Warehouse Circus performers will spin around the site. NRMA Motoring and Services will host car related activities and have some vintage patrol vehicles on display. CIT Trade Skills Centre will bring their custom made big rig up for demonstrations and talks, plus display students’ spray painting work. There’ll be other spray painting displays, live music from the Fuelers and even live car crushing courtesy of SIMS Metal! The strength of Fyshwick car and bike businesses will be acknowledged on the day. Pick up a program and check them out ... This is a free event with catering available onsite.
